I think that anonymized, unstructured mental health "support" communities are necessarily doomed to devolve into self-reinforcing echo chambers of despondence. It's a function of having an infinite influx of new "unwell" users while only having a percentage of that audience ever get better, and the majority of those eventually moving on from the community that they've outgrown. The people that remain will always primarily be those who find solace in absolving themselves of any personal responsibility and just trade affirmations back and forth that everything sucks, and they don't need to worry about doing the hard work of fixing anything because nothing can be fixed.

I remember hearing an interview with the woman who started the first incel community back in the 90's discussing this phenomenon. Eventually the people genuinely interested in self improvement all leave for the sake of their own mental wellbeing, unable to stem the overwhelming tide of pessimism.

If there's any defense against this, I would wager that it needs to come from a structured program with skilled facilitators, moving people through phases of the program so you don't get "stuck" with a cohort that refuse, or are unable, to make progress.
