My car has been shot at, and family members of mine have been beat nearly to death and mugged. My turbo woke, uber rich cousin moved to Baltimore from the Bay Area and was nearly killed despite thinking it’s racist and ignorant to acknowledge Baltimore’s crime problem.
That being said, there are many good things about Baltimore too. People are really friendly compared to other mid-Atlantic cities. It’s seriously an outlier in culture. The concerts, public art, and the aquarium(!) are also better than the bigger, richer cities nearby like DC. You could book a spot on a tourist bus, but it’d be a lot of really old people lol. A national park like Yellowstone would probably be best for a female solo traveler, since there are lots of busy trials with plenty of park rangers. There are lots of wild animals that are/were mostly extinct elsewhere in the US, like bison/American buffalo and gray wolves.
If you’re more interested in cities, don’t try to drive in East Coast/NE cities. The roads are a PVP zone, but there’s usually better public transportation than in other regions. NYC would be the most popular destination. Lots to do and see, though personally I don’t like visiting NYC that much because it’s so dirty and smells like rotting garbage. Boston is clean and greener, same with DC, with plenty of famous sites, historical neighborhoods, and museums.
West Coast can be nice too, especially if you want to go to the beach (but the water is really cold there because it’s coming down from Alaska). I’ve found West Coast drivers to be less aggro, but there are a ton of really large and ugly freeways in California and LA especially.

Nonnies, be safe out there. Looks like deep fakes and other ai tech could be deregulated if this bill passes the senate
>The brief but consequential provision, tucked into the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s sweeping markup, would be a major boon to the AI industry, which has lobbied for uniform and light touch regulation as tech firms develop a technology they promise will transform society.
>However, while the clause would be far-reaching if enacted, it faces long odds in the U.S. Senate, where procedural rules may doom its inclusion in the GOP legislation.
>The AI provision in the bill states that “no state or political subdivision may enforce any law or regulation regulating artificial intelligence models, artificial intelligence systems, or automated decision systems.” The language could bar regulations on systems ranging from popular commercial models like ChatGPT to those that help make decisions about who gets hired or finds housing.
>Half of all U.S. states so far have enacted legislation regulating AI deepfakes in political campaigns, according to a tracker from the watchdog organization Public Citizen.

Hooray surveillance state!
>The Trump administration has expanded Palantir’s work with the government, spreading the company’s technology — which could easily merge data on Americans — throughout agencies.
>Mr. Trump has not publicly talked about the effort since. But behind the scenes, officials have quietly put technological building blocks into place to enable his plan. In particular, they have turned to one company: Palantir, the data analysis and technology firm.
>The company has received more than $113 million in federal government spending since Mr. Trump took office, according to public records, including additional funds from existing contracts as well as new contracts with the Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon. (This does not include a $795 million contract that the Department of Defense awarded the company last week, which has not been spent.)
>Representatives of Palantir are also speaking to at least two other agencies — the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service — about buying its technology, according to six government officials and Palantir employees
>Creating detailed portraits of Americans based on government data is not just a pipe dream. The Trump administration has already sought access to hundreds of data points on citizens and others through government databases, including their bank account numbers, the amount of their student debt, their medical claims and any disability status.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11505585/https://www.cspinet.org/banned-food-additiveshttps://ec.europa.eu/food/food-feed-portal/screen/food-additives/searchThe reason you feel less bloated after eating European products is most likely because they use a different type of wheat than us, they use soft wheat which is easy to digest but also lacks nutrients, we use hard wheat which is nutrient dense but is harder to digest. European food labels are not legally required to list every ingredient, they just have to list the main ingredients. You also wouldn’t be able to recognize the “scary” ingredients even if the labels did list them, because you don’t know enough. In the EU chemicals, additives, dyes and preservatives are listed under their “E names” and are also called different names than they are in the US, for example red dye 40 is called allura red on food labels in the EU, and high fructose corn syrup is called isoglucose.
>>2551338That’s wildly incorrect, we are one of the main importers of food globally so everyone else is eating the same foods we are, and we rank 3rd in food quality and health, after only Denmark and Canada. Our food is not only more nutrient dense than in almost all other countries, but ours also tends to be fortified, and we have stricter standards for additives. This will probably change now that trump wants the FDA done away with.

obvious, but: regionally produced food always tastes better. Sweet corn in Europe has nothing on American sweet corn. I don't even buy it here anymore. I get my fill of avocadoes, salsa, corn, and to some extent tomatoes when I visit the US. And I bring back a fuckton of reese's peanut butter cups and peanut butter, bc Europe doesn't have any that taste good unless I want to pay a lot, and even then it's not as good. Cranberries and sweet potatoes are also better over there. Probably other stuff I can't remember right now.
But I don't bother with Mexican food in Europe. I can't buy refried beans or even make them spontaneously, because pinto beans are not available in any stores. I made refried beans with kidney beans, which was a huge mistake because of the farting aspect (thicker skin). There is no spicy salsa and the ingredients for making one myself are often not available. I got inappropriately angry seeing a bong influencer move (temporarily?) to my large Euro city and do a bunch of videos in shitty Mexican / Tex-Mex restaurants. Like why waste your money? They all suck. It doesn't matter how much you pay. There is no Mexican or central American diaspora here (unlike some other groups, who do cultivate authentic food scenes). But what can you do? I was astonished, hearing her praise this food that uses frozen avocado purée and shitty spiceless salsa.
Anyway, I try to pay attention to native fruits and vegetables wherever I am. I don't have any great insights aside from that, and to appreciate what you have. I never craved Mexican food until COVID meant I didn't travel for a couple of years. Then I was dying for it, lol

The majority of the people that actually lost someone or were there themselves are still alive, and if I was one of them Id be so fed up with these wannabe victims even mentioning it.

I always find it ironic when somebody who flaunts how they're """Irish""" practices Protestantism, and its especially ironic when they join in on ridiculing Catholicism. It's one thing to just not be Catholic because you're not religious in general, but they claim to love they're ancestry while basically spitting on what their ancestors fought and immigrated for in the first place.
Not racebaiting or anything, it's just really weird to me when someone takes pride in their heritage when they clearly dont know anything about it and this is the group that is more guilty of this than any other.

>>2553903Kek I feel called out by this post so let me raise a counterpoint. It's kind of an open secret that Irish persecution wasn't really about Catholicism, that was pure pretext. It was a weird scenario of white-on-white colonialism, and the English objection to Irish life had a lot more to do with language and quashing out remnants of the old way of life than it did Catholicism (a religion that was forced on them by their other colonizers). But since the English couldn't meaningfully differentiate between them and the Irish on racial grounds - like they did with all their other conquests - they focused on Catholicism.
It's also true that if you take Protestantism seriously, you can't help but identify and point out major theological flaws in Catholicism.
British Quakers also fled to the US for the same reason but no one gives their descendants shit for not being Quakers anymore.

Not to sound dramatic or anything but is anyone a little concerned about this whole “day of defiance” protest? I might just be extra anxious because I live in super libtarded state, but I’m just really not excited if the national guard, ICE, the police, etc aren’t able to keep a handle on this whole thing. What the fuck is going to happen if a lot of major cities start to look like L.A.? And I mean worse than they did back in 2020 when the whole Floyd bullshit happened? If you want to protest and you start to commit crimes while doing so, it’s not fascism for the police to come arrest you for becoming violent, destroying other peoples property, committing assault, vandalism, etc. That is called enforcing the law. Deporting immigrants who made the decision to come to our country and live here illegally instead of trying to gain some kind of legal standing to eventually become citizens and join our country are also committing a crime by doing so, and deporting them back to their country is the way that our law is enforced. Protesting against the enforcement of the law in the country you supposedly want to live in is sheer absurdity.

>>2557008this is going to be worse than the floyd riots because these people have been planning these protests for months all over social media. I think this is the reasoning behind Trump being heavy handed by pulling the marines and national guard into LA even though there are only a few hundred protestors. He is showing his hand right away so organized people across the country who have violent and destructive intentions don't become emboldened.

>>2554353honestly it's just a weird kind of elitism. I was speaking with people who could trace their family lineage for centuries in the same region. They were shitting on Americans for their "obsession" with their heritage. I asked why it's OK for lifelong Danes (for example) to trace this lineage and be proud of it, but not Americans whose family members left various Euro countries, sometimes under threats of persecution or extreme poverty. One guy then lectured me on what is acceptable for an American to say and what isn't. Did your family keep the language alive? Do you still have family in X country? Like fuck off, not everyone has inbred ancestors dating back centuries. Not everyone could avoid forced integration. Sometimes the people who stayed behind died. Why do you care so much?
Idiots who get inordinately upset can't understand that people want to connect to their own history and have a right to do so. They cannot comprehend the fact that many people left various countries for America because they were in danger. No, Americans shouldn't call themselves "Irish" or whatever, but that behavior is also kind of obsolete. For people whose family members escaped persecution, their ancestors were neither native Americans nor true colonizers. Their great- or great-great-grandparents weren't American in any way, so why tell them that they should just forget their family ever immigrated? It's interesting that most Eastern Europeans don't act snotty to Americans researching their family history, because they know
numerous reasons why people fled from the end of the 19th c. to the middle of the 20th c. It's a real elitist concern to get upset over how someone chooses to connect to their own heritage, since with a handful of exceptions (e.g., fake Native claims), it doesn't affect other people at all.

So for every illegal immigrant who comes here and rents a house, that one less house for someone who was born here or who came here legally. Which then drives up the prices of houses and rent. Same thing with food and jobs. So every person who comes here, especially illegally, directly hurts natives. A country should take care of its own first. And I hold the same feeling for every country. If I illegally overstayed my visa in Germany or Canada, I wouldn't cry and expect special treatment just because I came from a bad part of America.
>Mothers being ripped apart from their children. I sympathize, but also, what did they expect? They made the choice to have children, and then they made the choice to illegally go to another country, and then they made the choice to bring those children with them. I think we should keep them together, but that means deporting the children and people are up in arms about that too.

The Supreme Court has ruled that while illegal aliens must receive some amount of due process, they are not entitled to the same procedural processes as citizens. So if an illegal immigrant already has a criminal record, they have already received due process through the courts and can be deported (as the courts have just upheld). I apologize for oversimplifying due process in my response, but the fact remains that the Constitution and its enumerated powers have always protected citizens primarily. I see a lot of people without a background in law misunderstand it.

In case you are wondering why the protests are happening… it's because the people being taken are harmless and have no criminal records. They were taking people from graduation ceremonies for their children. Pregnant women, grandmas. Men who are showing up and doing everything right. Why is everyone itt ignoring that? Context matters. The 14th protects people from being snatched and sent away without court hearings. This is a good thing, it prevents shit like mass killings. Think Nazi Germany. This is exactly how it started. Not saying it will get to that point but to ignore the similarity between the two is dangerous. Governments should be kept in check when they overstep. This would all be solved if the people being deported were being sent away with proper procedure.

Think of it this way, why would an educated liberal woman vote for republicans, ever? It would be going directly against her interests and her beliefs. As of August2024, first time since 1946 because we had an agreement after Republicans attempted to steal that election back in the 1940’s, self-proclaimed “vigilante” voter-fraud hunters challenged the rights of 317,886 voters. The NAACP of Georgia estimates that by Election Day there were already 200,000 in Georgia alone.
No less than 2,121,000 mail-in ballots were disqualified for minor clerical errors (e.g. postage due). 585,000 ballots cast in-precinct were also disqualified.
1,216,000 “provisional” ballots were rejected, not counted.
3.24 million new registrations were rejected or not entered on the rolls in time to vote. Brennan Center for Justice, said since the 2020 election, “At least 30 states enacted 78 restrictive laws” to blockade voting.
These are targeted at blue states. Nevada was disqualifying younger voters on signature which disproportionately effected younger democrats.

Say what you will about illegal immigrants, but I don't like how it's being used as a front to establish a database that collects the information of citizens. Trump is even emboldening it by allowing it to take medical, financial, and online data. The service has been used to predict behavior, like where a person might move to in the future, or whether you will commit or be a victim of a crime. This isn't even tinfoil, the technology has been used in other cities, besides picrel there was an article by the Intercept from 2018 about the LAPD using it in certain neighborhoods. By recruiting more young males to die in wars they are increasing women’s worth in the future workforce and by proxy power in society. Critics, including a 2002 Texas appellate court ruling, have questioned its validity, noting that the proprietary scoring methodology could be speculative or unscientific. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2004 further ruled that the Abel Assessment, derived from this study, is a treatment tool, not a reliable detector of CSA perpetrators.>Regarding political ideology, the study does not address liberalism or conservatism as factors in CSA perpetration, so it offers no evidence to support or refute claims about conservatives or liberals being more likely to be sex offenders. The focus is on demographic similarities, not political affiliation. Other studies, like those in Sexual Abuse (2017) or Archives of Sexual Behavior (2019), also do not link political ideology to CSA perpetration, emphasizing instead psychological, social, or environmental risk factors. >More importantly, that search does return a handful of results which explicitly reference a 93% statistic for sex offenders, mostly from religious news sites. That is probably because the statistic given is that 93% of sex offenders described themselves as "religious," not as "conservative" (Abel & Harlow 2001, p. 310)
>This is itself is not actually a very enlightening number because the survey this number comes from compared its sample to US census data from 1999. The survey found 93% of their sample was religious, and 93% of the general US population was religious. Also of note, the survey was specifically about pedophilia and child molestation, not sex offenders in general. The results included ~16K individuals, somewhat evenly divided into 3 groups: control, admitted child molesters, and "liars and deniers," which included those who had been accused of child molestation but denied it. The presence of a control group making up a third of the sample may have skewed demographic results, as it does not appear that the researchers did any further analysis of variance between those categories and the Census data.
>None of that really matters though, because these numbers probably aren't trustworthy. They come from the (self-published?) book, Abel & Harlow (2001) The stop child molestation book : what ordinary people can do in their everyday lives to save three million children. While the book notes their study, carried out by the authors' own private company, did receive IRB approval, the results do not appear to have ever been subject to peer review or published by any academic journal. The proprietary "Abel Assessment" used in the survey is also noted on its Wikipedia article as "controversial" and having " struggled at times to pass the Daubert standard for admissibility in federal and state courts."
>Overall, this was an easy source to find, but not one that has any scholarly weight, which is probably why it pops up on religious news sites and unsourced claims on the internet. No. 2563953

Didn't Trump just fire a lot of the irs? If even 10% of the people who voted against him withheld taxes, they couldn't really do anything, because they wouldn't have the manpower. It's simple numbers.
If you bothered looking into it, you'd find the irs does very little prosecution these days. The big, bad IRS is mostly a meme and historical relic. War tax protesters have been successfully using this method for years/ decades to prevent their tax dollars going to war.
But sure, wave your little sign and feel good about yourself while sending the government thousands of dollars..I'm sure they will care about your concerns while buying another drone with your money. Though according to this thread, all the tax money gets returned, so maybe it doesn't make a difference.

The woman in Georgia who was on life support to bring her baby to term "delivered" her baby. As expected it's completely disabled and is most likely suffering.
Link to an article about it and what I'm quoting:
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1jwl9l9yneo
>A brain-dead woman's baby has been delivered by caesarean section, the woman's mother says, after the hospital said her body had to be kept on life support due to abortion law in the US state of Georgia. >The boy, who weighs 1lb 13oz (08kg), is being kept in the neonatal intensive care unit, said Ms Smith's mother, April Newkirk.>(the hospital) determined she (the mother) had blood clots in her brain, and declared her brain-dead… her baby's due date was over three months away. But her family said doctors at Emory told them they could not take her off life support or remove devices keeping her breathing because the state bans abortion after cardiac activity can be detected, around six weeks into pregnancy>Ms Newkirk said at the time that her grandson may be blind, unable to walk or even struggle to survive because of the complications of her daughter's healthBasically the grandma now gets to watch her grandchild die slowly or be forced to take care of a child who shouldn't have been born in the first place. The mom is being taken off life support today. The worst part is everyone knew the baby wouldn't turn out okay, the mother's body was basically dead and couldn't produce a healthy baby in that state. The baby is named Chance which I guess is fitting but seems morbid.
No. 2567877
>>2567853This whole story was weird. Apparently the family thought that aborting the kid might save the mom. I read somewhere it was actually the mom or families wish for the baby to be born. Also, higher ups in the state said that the hospital doesn't have to do this.
Before anyone accuses me of being a republican, i'm not remotely pro life at ALL. But this whole story was fishy. I hope the kid is ok, it sounds like he's doing ok considering the circumstances.

Any other people sick of living in a blue county in a red state? All of our demands are ignored, rural areas are overrepresented despite nearly half of the population of our state being concentrated in blue, urban areas? Too many stereotypical rural Midwestern hicks from the middle of nowhere comprise our government and Republicans are fucking everything over. On one hand I'm torn between getting into politics and making my state great again, or moving the fuck out because my state's interests clearly don't align with my own. It absolutely baffles me that Kasich, our former governor, rejected 400 million in federal funding to build high speed rail connecting our 3 major cities with the money subsequently going to other states because he's too busy cocksucking motor companies. I hope John Kasich, Bernie Moreno and Mike Dewine all die in gruesome, horrible deaths.
