Missoula is a fucking shithole. I moved here from California, and I swear every weird person ever was born in this Montanan pigsty. The crime and homelessness are even worse, but nobody talks about it. Every month, I see at least one homeless person. I'm a TA at the "big" university and all the students are hilariously dumb. I think even a 5th grader from California could learn better. Don't even get me started on the men, they make me want to blow my brains out. Deciding to "touch grass" in "beautiful Montana" had to have been the worst decision of my life. Men who surround themselves with nature are even more misogynistic than urban men, I think something about forests makes them revert to their neanderthal state. They look at me with such barely concealed disgust and rage. One moid asked me "where I come from" in the most condescending way. Sorry I don't look like the Stacies LARPing in cowboy hats you keep trying to talk to on Tinder, you inbred backwater faggot. It's even worse because they all associate the kinds of women I describe with California and it makes me want to fucking vomit when I answer. Never, EVER come here. Don't make the same mistake I did. I was better off when I was practically homeless in LA.

It really depends what you mean by “all that bad.” Aside from the obvious problems (crime, opiates) it’s a small city with not a ton to do. For that reason it’s not super comparable to bigger cities like Philly or Detroit. There are some nice museums and the waterfront is pretty, but outside the inner harbor there isn’t much. There are a ton of nice areas around Baltimore though, so if you’re moving for work or something maybe look for something in the suburbs.

I got a similar experience in Iowa. Moved here from Texas and let me tell you, these people are afraid of their own fucking shadow. God forbid I accidentally slip and say "howdy", they look at me weird. I blend in, I swear; I don't have an accent, just southern and very Texas tendancies like saying hello to people I pass by.
The funniest thing is that.OTHER TEXANS STRANDED HERE DO THE SAME THING. Once I kick up a conversation with someone else, the native Iowans (?) join in very eagerly to talk.
The second resources become available, I'm ditching this sad place. I haven't gone a single day without native Iowans saying "why did you move here? It's kiserable; take me with you back to Texas" kek

I was born in Baltimore but have moved away. By crime statistics, it’s one of the most dangerous cities in America. Please keep that in mind, always. My car has been shot at, and family members of mine have been beat nearly to death and mugged. My turbo woke, uber rich cousin moved to Baltimore from the Bay Area and was nearly killed despite thinking it’s racist and ignorant to acknowledge Baltimore’s crime problem.
That being said, there are many good things about Baltimore too. People are really friendly compared to other mid-Atlantic cities. It’s seriously an outlier in culture. The concerts, public art, and the aquarium(!) are also better than the bigger, richer cities nearby like DC. I think Baltimore can be a nice play to live, but you should always put your safety first and be aware of your surroundings.

I mean that wouldn’t really solve the problems I have with the political situation here in Texas. But then again, neither would moving away. Those issues would still affect the people I leave behind.

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah, some neighborhoods are definitely safer than others. Stay clear of the Middle East (yes, we actually call it that kek). You can tell when you’re entering a rough neighborhood like the ME when you start seeing tons of vacant row houses. John’s Hopkins and other developers have intentionally gutted poorer communities like the ME to bring down property value so they can redevelop it. But obviously, vacant houses = trap houses.

I feel like it’s pretty much universally agreed upon that Cajun/Louisiana accents are among the most beloved. I love Cajun accents, and people who speak that variant of French fascinate me. It was starting to die out for a while because at a certain point decades ago kids were being forbidden from speaking their native (Louisiana) French at school, but apparently there is an active movement to bring it back which is awesome. The Western states have a lot of natural beauty, but you would need to rent a car to get around probably. You could book a spot on a tourist bus, but it’d be a lot of really old people lol. A national park like Yellowstone would probably be best for a female solo traveler, since there are lots of busy trials with plenty of park rangers. There are lots of wild animals that are/were mostly extinct elsewhere in the US, like bison/American buffalo and gray wolves.
If you’re more interested in cities, don’t try to drive in East Coast/NE cities. The roads are a PVP zone, but there’s usually better public transportation than in other regions. NYC would be the most popular destination. Lots to do and see, though personally I don’t like visiting NYC that much because it’s so dirty and smells like rotting garbage. Boston is clean and greener, same with DC, with plenty of famous sites, historical neighborhoods, and museums.
West Coast can be nice too, especially if you want to go to the beach (but the water is really cold there because it’s coming down from Alaska). I’ve found West Coast drivers to be less aggro, but there are a ton of really large and ugly freeways in California and LA especially.
I haven’t spent as much time in the Deep South, so I can really offer any suggestion.

>The brief but consequential provision, tucked into the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s sweeping markup, would be a major boon to the AI industry, which has lobbied for uniform and light touch regulation as tech firms develop a technology they promise will transform society.
>However, while the clause would be far-reaching if enacted, it faces long odds in the U.S. Senate, where procedural rules may doom its inclusion in the GOP legislation.
>The AI provision in the bill states that “no state or political subdivision may enforce any law or regulation regulating artificial intelligence models, artificial intelligence systems, or automated decision systems.” The language could bar regulations on systems ranging from popular commercial models like ChatGPT to those that help make decisions about who gets hired or finds housing.
>Half of all U.S. states so far have enacted legislation regulating AI deepfakes in political campaigns, according to a tracker from the watchdog organization Public Citizen.

The tech industry is really trying to hit home that this technology is the most important thing in the world right now to maintain its own legitimacy.
The major tech companies all realize once it becomes apparent they're lying, and that we aren't just a few years away from skynet but good, investment in the tech sector will fall off a cliff. And politicians (people like to make it out to be a boomer thing, young politicians are just as fucking stupid though) fall for it because they're hapless and easily grifted.

The trade war is getting pretty bad. The US is no longer the the global leader in research, 9 out of 10 of the world's top research institutions are Chinese. the EU and China are offering money to academics who want to move. If the US keeps up its isolationist policy, we might see a future where instead of trying to get into Harvard, academics would be learning Mandarin to get into Chinese schools.

To be fair, the US was the leader in scientific research when net migration was much lower (pre-Trump and Covid) and there were fewer international students then. I think the cuts to scientific research under Trump, including at universities, are the bigger issue. However, universities make billions off of international students since they pay higher tuition. This model doesn’t prioritize American researchers, since many international students return to their home countries. I’m not anti-immigration, but I think there’s some nuance there. It’s not all good and it’s not all bad, either.

Baltimore is so gentrified now. Every other business is either a beerhall or a coffee shop. It's current overrun with white, middle-class, 2nd stage hipsters who came to study at, then dropped out of, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, or MICA. Half the city was torn down to make student apartments and the rent is so crazy in the city that most of the locals were forced to move to the county.

Hooray surveillance state!
>The Trump administration has expanded Palantir’s work with the government, spreading the company’s technology — which could easily merge data on Americans — throughout agencies.
>Mr. Trump has not publicly talked about the effort since. But behind the scenes, officials have quietly put technological building blocks into place to enable his plan. In particular, they have turned to one company: Palantir, the data analysis and technology firm.
>The company has received more than $113 million in federal government spending since Mr. Trump took office, according to public records, including additional funds from existing contracts as well as new contracts with the Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon. (This does not include a $795 million contract that the Department of Defense awarded the company last week, which has not been spent.)
>Representatives of Palantir are also speaking to at least two other agencies — the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service — about buying its technology, according to six government officials and Palantir employees
>Creating detailed portraits of Americans based on government data is not just a pipe dream. The Trump administration has already sought access to hundreds of data points on citizens and others through government databases, including their bank account numbers, the amount of their student debt, their medical claims and any disability status.

American food has stricter regulations than food in European countries though, you can read an article about it here https://techround.co.uk/business/american-food-standards/
And I would also recommend reading these
https://amp.theguardian.com/environment/2023/oct/16/eu-abandons-promise-ban-toxic-chemicals-consumer-products

https://www.cspinet.org/banned-food-additives
https://ec.europa.eu/food/food-feed-portal/screen/food-additives/search

The reason you feel less bloated after eating European products is most likely because they use a different type of wheat than us, they use soft wheat which is easy to digest but also lacks nutrients, we use hard wheat which is nutrient dense but is harder to digest. European food labels are not legally required to list every ingredient, they just have to list the main ingredients. You also wouldn’t be able to recognize the “scary” ingredients even if the labels did list them, because you don’t know enough. In the EU chemicals, additives, dyes and preservatives are listed under their “E names” and are also called different names than they are in the US, for example red dye 40 is called allura red on food labels in the EU, and high fructose corn syrup is called isoglucose.

>>2551338
That’s wildly incorrect, we are one of the main importers of food globally so everyone else is eating the same foods we are, and we rank 3rd in food quality and health, after only Denmark and Canada. Our food is not only more nutrient dense than in almost all other countries, but ours also tends to be fortified, and we have stricter standards for additives. This will probably change now that trump wants the FDA done away with.

More regulation does not automatically equal safer or healthier. The EU notoriously bans foods that the US has studied for decades with no evidence of adverse health effects (many GMO crops, for instance). Tiny European counties can pass a shit ton of regulation because they're not managing the food system of one of the biggest countries and food importers/exporters in the world like the FDA does, this does not translate into safety by itself. Also, the vast majority of food and drug law in the EU is literally just ripped off from the US, like word for word. Like there are annual conferences with food and drug lawyers from various countries and EU lawmakers are explicit about borrowing from the US regulatory framework.

And I bring back a fuckton of reese's peanut butter cups and peanut butter, bc Europe doesn't have any that taste good unless I want to pay a lot, and even then it's not as good. Cranberries and sweet potatoes are also better over there. Probably other stuff I can't remember right now.

But I don't bother with Mexican food in Europe. I can't buy refried beans or even make them spontaneously, because pinto beans are not available in any stores. I made refried beans with kidney beans, which was a huge mistake because of the farting aspect (thicker skin). There is no spicy salsa and the ingredients for making one myself are often not available. I got inappropriately angry seeing a bong influencer move (temporarily?) to my large Euro city and do a bunch of videos in shitty Mexican / Tex-Mex restaurants. Like why waste your money? They all suck. It doesn't matter how much you pay. There is no Mexican or central American diaspora here (unlike some other groups, who do cultivate authentic food scenes). But what can you do? I was astonished, hearing her praise this food that uses frozen avocado purée and shitty spiceless salsa.

Anyway, I try to pay attention to native fruits and vegetables wherever I am. I don't have any great insights aside from that, and to appreciate what you have. I never craved Mexican food until COVID meant I didn't travel for a couple of years. Then I was dying for it, lol

Boomers that have never stepped foot outside of the Midwest and act like 9/11 was a personal attack on them piss me off so much. Yes I get it was an attack on the country as a whole, but the only immediate effect it had on their lives is that it takes them a little longer to board an airplane. I always find it ironic when somebody who flaunts how they're """Irish""" practices Protestantism, and its especially ironic when they join in on ridiculing Catholicism. It's one thing to just not be Catholic because you're not religious in general, but they claim to love they're ancestry while basically spitting on what their ancestors fought and immigrated for in the first place.

Not racebaiting or anything, it's just really weird to me when someone takes pride in their heritage when they clearly dont know anything about it and this is the group that is more guilty of this than any other.

Kek I feel called out by this post so let me raise a counterpoint. It's kind of an open secret that Irish persecution wasn't really about Catholicism, that was pure pretext. It was a weird scenario of white-on-white colonialism, and the English objection to Irish life had a lot more to do with language and quashing out remnants of the old way of life than it did Catholicism (a religion that was forced on them by their other colonizers). But since the English couldn't meaningfully differentiate between them and the Irish on racial grounds - like they did with all their other conquests - they focused on Catholicism.

It's also true that if you take Protestantism seriously, you can't help but identify and point out major theological flaws in Catholicism.

British Quakers also fled to the US for the same reason but no one gives their descendants shit for not being Quakers anymore.

Have heard Americans say that German-Americans are all hard-headed but they're insulting people who are like 11th generation German big whoop. You're the same.
Part of it though comes from ghettos, when different sub ethnicities were sorted into different neighborhoods in east coast cities. So everyone knows who are the Irish because they are the roofers and part of the roofers union, the Italian-Americans who aren't as integrated, the Pollacks because of whatever stereotype and neighborhoods they come from, etc etc and as recent as the 60's they'd beat each other up for crossing over the wrong sidewalk. That makes sense, there have been sizable immigrant populations from those countries compared to the original English settlers so naturally it’s reflected in the last names. It’s pretty interesting that even in the modern day you can see those trends by the frequency of specific surnames in certain regions, like Italian names up in the northeast or Olson and its variants in the Great Lakes area. I always find this stuff pretty interesting and am curious what other nonnas’ heritage is. But I could see a discussion about that attracting a bunch of Euro nonnies to the thread kek

It is excessive, but not surprising. LA can get pretty out of hand when it comes to protests. I’m sure trump doesn’t want a large scale violent protest against an agency that he is backing up. If he doesn’t get all dramatic about it, then ICE may refuse to conduct raids in those areas for safety reasons (this is not fact just my opinion kek). And I don’t see Trump allowing violent protesters to get their way. If he rolls over then it just encourages more violence towards ICE.

Not to sound dramatic or anything but is anyone a little concerned about this whole “day of defiance” protest? I might just be extra anxious because I live in super libtarded state, but I’m just really not excited if the national guard, ICE, the police, etc aren’t able to keep a handle on this whole thing. What the fuck is going to happen if a lot of major cities start to look like L.A.? And I mean worse than they did back in 2020 when the whole Floyd bullshit happened? If you want to protest and you start to commit crimes while doing so, it’s not fascism for the police to come arrest you for becoming violent, destroying other peoples property, committing assault, vandalism, etc. That is called enforcing the law. Deporting immigrants who made the decision to come to our country and live here illegally instead of trying to gain some kind of legal standing to eventually become citizens and join our country are also committing a crime by doing so, and deporting them back to their country is the way that our law is enforced. Protesting against the enforcement of the law in the country you supposedly want to live in is sheer absurdity.

No. 2557028

this is going to be worse than the floyd riots because these people have been planning these protests for months all over social media. Look into it they have been recruiting all over reddit for months. It is going to be very organized and very difficult to shut down when it gets violent (it will).
I think this is the reasoning behind Trump being heavy handed by pulling the marines and national guard into LA even though there are only a few hundred protestors. He is showing his hand right away so organized people across the country who have violent and destructive intentions don't become emboldened.

Am I crazy? If I as an American decide to go to another country like I don’t know, Japan(I heard they’re hard-asses about making sure people are sent back ASAP once their study/work/holiday visa is up), if I decide to just stay and lay low and work somewhere under the table, I’m not going to be surprised and demand that I have a right to stay, once I’m eventually found out and asked to leave. honestly it's just a weird kind of elitism. I was speaking with people who could trace their family lineage for centuries in the same region. They were shitting on Americans for their "obsession" with their heritage. I asked why it's OK for lifelong Danes (for example) to trace this lineage and be proud of it, but not Americans whose family members left various Euro countries, sometimes under threats of persecution or extreme poverty. One guy then lectured me on what is acceptable for an American to say and what isn't. Did your family keep the language alive? Do you still have family in X country? Like fuck off, not everyone has inbred ancestors dating back centuries. Not everyone could avoid forced integration. Sometimes the people who stayed behind died. Why do you care so much?

Idiots who get inordinately upset can't understand that people want to connect to their own history and have a right to do so. They cannot comprehend the fact that many people left various countries for America because they were in danger. No, Americans shouldn't call themselves "Irish" or whatever, but that behavior is also kind of obsolete. For people whose family members escaped persecution, their ancestors were neither native Americans nor true colonizers. Their great- or great-great-grandparents weren't American in any way, so why tell them that they should just forget their family ever immigrated? It's interesting that most Eastern Europeans don't act snotty to Americans researching their family history, because they know numerous reasons why people fled from the end of the 19th c. to the middle of the 20th c. It's a real elitist concern to get upset over how someone chooses to connect to their own heritage, since with a handful of exceptions (e.g., fake Native claims), it doesn't affect other people at all.

Unfortunately, physical objects in a country are a zero sum game. So for every illegal immigrant who comes here and rents a house, that one less house for someone who was born here or who came here legally. Which then drives up the prices of houses and rent. Same thing with food and jobs. So every person who comes here, especially illegally, directly hurts natives. A country should take care of its own first. And I hold the same feeling for every country. If I illegally overstayed my visa in Germany or Canada, I wouldn't cry and expect special treatment just because I came from a bad part of America.
>Mothers being ripped apart from their children.
I sympathize, but also, what did they expect? They made the choice to have children, and then they made the choice to illegally go to another country, and then they made the choice to bring those children with them. I think we should keep them together, but that means deporting the children and people are up in arms about that too.

Modern 1st world countries understand this and no longer offer Birthright Citizenship. And people still die every year trying to make it to Europe, but vulnerable, desperate & pregnant women do not make up a noticable portion of those economic migrants like they do on our Southern Border.
It may have made sense for a growing country, before mass transportation became cheap, plentiful and easy and our government social support programs lowered their requirements while expanding their offerings, but now it is the cause of intense personal suffering, rape & other criminal acts, legal issues and monetary losses.

You understand that when you are deported you are still given the right to due process? Non American citizens have that right as well as us. People are being taken when they leave the courthouse at their hearing for citizenship that is still in process. It's like arresting someone for following the rules. Other people are being taken before they can even show ID and no one hears from them again. People with papers are being taken. People who are here on student visas are being taken. You should be concerned the government isn't following their own rules. It's wild so many of you are defending this.

And dude, you need to go back to school. Grabbing someone and taking them without going through the court system is not due process. Not identifying yourself when taking someone is not due process. You are throwing your own rights away because you hate immigrants. If anyone can say they are ice of a police officer and take someone then there's going to be a lot more rape and murder victims in the future. Rules exist for a reason.

Montana, Idaho, Wyoming all have the lowest immigrants populations yet have some of the most expensive housing in the country with wages not matching price of living. Housing prices are on par with California, except without California wages. West Virginia it's slightly more affordable but there's zero jobs, zero pay and they're some of the most impoverished areas in the country. >Why aren't people who are upset about illegals renting houses, getting jobs, etc because "it's taking it away from citizens" doing a single thing about the amount of vacancies
Why are you under the impression that I'm not doing anything? Besides, why do you get to be the judge of what is and isn't worth a person's time? One, illegal immigrants have even more deleterious effects on a society than I discussed, so getting rid of them is far more beneficial than just lowering rent, food, and increasing wages. Two, it is to enforce a law on the books (illegal immigration) than the arduous process of electing officials to change laws which then need funding to enforce.
>doing anything about businesses choosing to understaff
How does a private citizen, or even a government official, force a company, which is using its private money, to employ more people? Like, what would be your plan for that?
>start questioning why companies buy them en masse
Because its financially worth it. Because of how many people there are. Which is exacerbated by illegal immigrants.
>some realtors rather leave literal shacks on Zillow for 2+ years than lowering the price
You are aware that a realtor doesn't get to decide the price or whether to accept a lower offer, right? That would be the owner who decides that. And again, what laws would you enforce/pass to force someone to sell a privately owned house they don't want to sell?

Most people care about mass immigration. It’s at an all time high, it depresses wages for us all, it demoralizes and divides our country, and it fuels inequality as corporations get away with treating illegal immigrants like slave laborers (which I thought progressives would care about). Thinking this doesn’t make you a /pol/tard. Some anons need to step outside their Twitter/Reddit circlejerk more.
If you look at the overall shift in public opinion towards immigration in Europe and Canada, you’ll see what happens when this trend continues. Tolerance will decrease from here. World leaders don’t really care. They’re happy to profit from the ever growing pyramid scheme that is our economy. Even Trump hasn’t taken a radically different approach from Obama or Biden. He just plays into populist politics more. But people are fed up, regardless.

The Supreme Court has ruled that while illegal aliens must receive some amount of due process, they are not entitled to the same procedural processes as citizens. So if an illegal immigrant already has a criminal record, they have already received due process through the courts and can be deported (as the courts have just upheld). I apologize for oversimplifying due process in my response, but the fact remains that the Constitution and its enumerated powers have always protected citizens primarily. I see a lot of people without a background in law misunderstand it.

In case you are wondering why the protests are happening… it's because the people being taken are harmless and have no criminal records. They were taking people from graduation ceremonies for their children. Pregnant women, grandmas. Men who are showing up and doing everything right. Why is everyone itt ignoring that? Context matters. The 14th protects people from being snatched and sent away without court hearings. This is a good thing, it prevents shit like mass killings. Think Nazi Germany. This is exactly how it started. Not saying it will get to that point but to ignore the similarity between the two is dangerous. Governments should be kept in check when they overstep. This would all be solved if the people being deported were being sent away with proper procedure.

Literally no need to worry about it. I lived in Portland during the 2020 protests when it was portrayed as an active war zone in the news. I never saw any protestors, I was never impacted by any riots, I went to and from work and got my groceries as normal. Unless you're directly in the middle of a protest area, it won't impact you. Also Oklahoma is not my idea of a place with riot potential anyway. If you're not in a big city, any protests that happen will be teeny tiny.

Here’s a random video of someone explaining why it’s weird. Certain cities had zero votes for Kamala, which is unheard of since cities have more liberal voters. More people split their ballots this election than ever before, while splitting ballots happens sometimes it’s extremely uncommon (except in local politics where it’s more normal) usually democrats and republicans vote down the ballot. Think of it this way, why would an educated liberal woman vote for republicans, ever? It would be going directly against her interests and her beliefs. This election had one of the most controversial and hated presidents of all time, why would so many people suddenly start splitting their ballots now? It doesn’t make sense. Trump and Elon both openly bragged about cheating so anyone who thinks he actually one is just mentally slow, that’s all there is to it.

Why? Fwiw, I'm skeptical of both claims. But I've seen a lot of the same people who said 2020 couldn't possibly have been stolen, suddenly start claiming 2024 was stolen, and they have basically the same level of evidence as the 2020 people did. It just seems hypocritical. There were also mathematical anomalies and lawsuits in 2020. There were statements by democratic leaders that could have been construed as admission of a conspiracy. There were tiktoks with credentialed individuals explaining issues persuasively. There were charts and graphs. These claims aren't new or different from the 2020 claims.
I personally think that both events should be investigated. We need secure elections going forth. But I don't really believe either election was "stolen", and people need to knock it off. You have to be kind of out of touch to not see the massive support each candidate had when they were voted in.

The specifics are being debated depending on the specialist and specific area. Different counties use different voting machines and methods. Texas for example removed a lot of ballots, which Greg Palast called attention to.

To give better context 4,776,706 voters were potentially wrongly purged from voter rolls according to US Elections Assistance Commission data. As of August2024, first time since 1946 because we had an agreement after Republicans attempted to steal that election back in the 1940’s, self-proclaimed “vigilante” voter-fraud hunters challenged the rights of 317,886 voters. The NAACP of Georgia estimates that by Election Day there were already 200,000 in Georgia alone.

No less than 2,121,000 mail-in ballots were disqualified for minor clerical errors (e.g. postage due). 585,000 ballots cast in-precinct were also disqualified.

1,216,000 “provisional” ballots were rejected, not counted.

3.24 million new registrations were rejected or not entered on the rolls in time to vote. Brennan Center for Justice, said since the 2020 election, “At least 30 states enacted 78 restrictive laws” to blockade voting.

These are targeted at blue states. Nevada was disqualifying younger voters on signature which disproportionately effected younger democrats.

She was using the phrase in a normal way not as a censored word like “unalive” for “killed”.

Like everyone else since the beginning of time I just want to live my life and shit happens and I roll with it. Everyone needs to chill but that never happens and we all have to deal with the bullshit because humans are a menace and fight constantly in the most retarded ways for the most retarded reasons and hold grudges across generations

I’m not conservative. I just hate California because it’s my duty as an East Coaster. Know the difference!
Santa Cruz is nice though.

I love California and I think it’s such a beautiful state, my state is kind of closeby it. I literally have dreams at night about it

Kek this. I remember hearing non stop bitching about "damn Californians" in my state. I lived in an apartment complex where a bunch of people were moving in. It was all idiots from red states or republicans who were "escaping Washington" but wanted to commute to Washington daily because the states pay and labor rights suck kek

What is it about American food that makes it stick on so much? Most Americans need to work out like they're training for the Olympics just to be chubby or muscley-chub. Even labor workers who lift and move all day are somehow fat. In other countries it's unheard of to skip meals and somehow do intense af cardio hours every day to barely lose weight yet it's the norm in the US kek

I think picking Cali is giga retarded due to the sheer amount of illegals there. Like, does he actually think he can make a dent? Are there legit even enough numbers in ICE to even try? Apparently there are 20k+ ICE workers like that’s literally not even shit compared to the millions and millions of illegals in California.
