The German in the new Black Butler season is so bad. I know this always happens with anime but why do they feel the need to add so much of it when it's going to be so bad. I can't even concentrate on the show.

It's terrible but it's integral to this arc. Honestly they needed more German. Half way through the new episode they just stopped and switched to Japanese and we missed and important crumb to a plot line. Also a the characters are supposed to be struggling with a language barrier. It's just weird that they didn't keep things consistent.

I'll endure any bug-eyed new Blood Plus adaptation as long as they dont retcon Diva's daughters' ahem, origins.
Early 2000 anime did have some interesting female rapist villains where their intentions were not even remotely played for laughs and/or titillation. Dante's goal in the first FullMetal Alchemist adaptation was literally keeping Edward as a sex slave

tl;dr Dante in 2003 FMA is a body-snatching old woman obsessed with her former lover Honenheim. Once she learned Ed and Al existed she snatched the body of someone Ed had crushed on and tried to seduce him (didn't work because she smelled like Honenheim) and then she was going to do the same with another of Ed's love interests and keep Ed as her sex slave because Honenheim's young cute son.

It's worth checking out if you like spokon and can accept the personified racehorse premise kek. Anime-wise the first season isn't that good imo since it has fanservice and CGDCT elements, but they shifted focus from season 2 onwards so everything after S1 was enjoyable to me - the Cinderella Gray manga is my favorite so I'm glad the anime looks like it'll be good. That said a big part of Uma's popularity in Japan is how detailed and faithful it is to real horse racing history, but I'd say it's still pretty fun even without that knowledge. Some of the anime like the Road to the Top OVA and Cinderella Gray is available officially on youtube with English subs, and you don't need to have seen any of the prior seasons to watch them, so you could check those out to see if it's your thing.

Contrary to popular belief as long as a male character is cool his literal rape charges will be forgiven, downplayed or ommtited as a character flaw. Same shit doesnt fly for women. See any Greek Mythology fan and how they woobify (?) well known rapists like Zeus or Poseidon but one cannot go a second without pickmes reminding you how Selene is A FEMALE RAPIST WITH A CAPITAL R AND JUST AS BAD as those fuckers.
I would kill for a Blood plus remake and/or new content just to unironically stan Diva.

Does anyone here feel frustrated that an anime that you like (not a personal favourite but still) isn't well liked/overly disliked despite being decent (subjective or not is another matter) that you have to go look for positive reviews of it?

No. 480672

>>480658
Kind of? I mean, I don't mind if it's not wildly popular, but I start feeling like an idiot when I thought something was great, and then I look online and general consensus is that it's the worst thing ever. I also feel that way about things I hate being widely loved. Either way, it kind of makes me feel like I'm missing something. Was there a particular series you were thinking of when you asked this question?

No. 480676

>>480658
Yup. A lot of the criticism is "I wasn't paying attention/I don't care enough to follow what's going on/I blame the author for things the anime messed up on/I don't like the genre so it must be bad" too.
I hate it, especially when the retarded misinfo ends up filtering out people that would have otherwise liked it. They'll take some rando's word that something is shit, but can't take the initiative to watch something themselves.

I can name a ton honestly, in fact a lot of my favourite anime are that.
But, I'm specifically thinking about Sunday Without God: while not a favourite of mine, I really liked it since I thought the premise was kind of novel (then again I didn't usually watch anime like it when it first came out 12 years ago) and I was genuinely saddened it wasn't as well received as I thought it would.

When I was on SeventhStyle back then (that site is dead thank god), so many people were harsh on it (including those who watched it) that it made me lose nearly any faith in wanting to watch similar anime to that, but then I stumbled upon a review from a popular anime site that had a kindly written, unbiased positive review of it, so it made me feel a bit better about it, but not much.

There are a number of other anime that I really liked only to get soured by reading a lot of people's online thoughts, sometimes due to constructive criticism but especially for more pointless reasons too.

It's expected of Netflix to acquire dead projects that gathered dust on the shelf for years. The same happened with their first batch of 'original' anime, like A.I.C.O.. Lazarus seems like a show written in the years following the Cowboy Bebop hype, but because it wasn't good enough, it got shelved until Watanabe decided to profit off Netflix's willingness to pay in gold bars for junk. It was really well done imo. I need to rewatch the anime, watching it as it aired was already a wild ride but binge watching it 12 years later must be fun too.

I’d recommend watching them just because I recently rewatched CCS and actually realized I liked a lot of the filler episodes. Skip them if you hate Mei or just really don’t care for monster of the week shenanigans (but in that case, I’d wonder why you were watching the show in the first place lol). CCS is a weekly kids show so I think if you watch it just wanting to see the plot get on with, you won’t enjoy it as much as if you just take in the vibes of the weekly adventures, but I understand that’s not for everybody.

I'm kind of able to enjoy it by seeing it as a slice of life "nothing actually happens" series but it's not a good action series and I can't say I get the hype around it. Does it ever actually get good?

Have any nonas ITT watched picrel? What were your opinions on it in terms of characters, world building etc? I quite enjoyed it, I love a tragic anime and this one caught me off guard. Kiyoko was my favorite, and I couldn't help but think that Novem would be good husbando material for some kek. I wish there was more to it though, especially on the gilgamesh itself or the supernatural abilities. It's been a few years since I last watched it so I'm excited to give it a rewatch.

Samefag, I've now seen both seasons. It's so boring. Like I said, casually pretending it's a slice of life helped a lot but there's just nothing memorable about the show whatsoever. None of the side characters are fun or interesting either. It's like they almost tried making them cool, but you know they'll never have a single win before the hero swoops in to get the actual win so you just can't bring yourself to care from how predictable it all is. Genuinely feels like watching a toddler show, eating plain white bread, watching cars go by on a road, listening to the wind. It's not stimulating in the least.

I really liked that the MC got to be an EDM singer. So many music themed animes have their MC's saying shit like "I would never sell out" "My music is how i express myself even if others don't like it" and claim that they are part of some semi niece genre. But then the music starts and it's the blandest jpop you've ever heard.

As someone who owns the series on DVD and was autist-level obsessed with it as a young teen, you could say I've watched the series before kek.
>Characters
Kiyoko is indeed the best character. She suffers a lot of heartache, has a great deal of injustice inflicted upon her, she has an annoying kid brother, etc. I have nothing but love and compassion for her. She wins in the end, sort of, so I always end up feeling vindicated on her behalf once the credits start rolling. Worst character is Chairman Yuki who was stealing organs from his feminized clone. The Countess at least has her sympathetic moments, even if she's a cruel and selfish asshole, but that bastard deserved a lot more than he got.
>World building
I love the post apocalyptic dreariness of the world. I love how grimy and miserable it is. I love that the sky is a giant mirror pointing back at the world so that there is no mistaking what human society has been reduced to, even if they tried to hide from it. I love that everything is awful and the cause of it all can be traced back to a singular moment of weakness from a person that absolutely knew better. Girl, he's happily married and has a child. Get the fuck over it maybe? I love that the show is about love, in more ways than one.
>Novem as husbando
Yes, yes he was. But really all the Gilgamesh are hot, what with their bondage-adjacent outfits.
As for your spoiler, I'm the type of person that enjoys a great deal of ambiguity in the media she consumes, so I never had much issue with being kept in the dark around certain aspects of the show. I would have liked to see more from the Gilgamesh faction though. We get a few solid moments with a handful of them, but the rest are either given a single personality trait or none at all. In exchange for a few more Gilgamesh crumbs, they can take back Toru pissing himself. Please and thank you!

The Animation, camera work, the background art is just… chef's kiss—it kind of becomes a clusterfuck on the end middle part and the main villain kind of got underutilized, but overall it's still a pretty great animu movie from the great era of Y2K. I wonder why no one talks about it? It's way too overlooked for having such high qualify—is it the non-kawiwi character designs?

If you're interested in brotherly bonds, gorgeous background art, or that sweet sweet 2000s anime aesthetic—you should definitely check this out.

I watched this as part of an anime class in uni, and the main reason it was part of the syllabus was because it was a collab between a Japanese studio and a non-Japanese director.

I’m guessing it never really caught on as a classic since it came out during a time when anime just started to penetrate the mainstream outside of Japan, so there wasn’t really an appetite for arthouse animation or atypical anime (Studio 4C is most well known for their Western IP collabs like the Animatrix).

Off topic but one of my main problems with Re:Zero is that despite being probably one of my favorite characters early on, Emilia gets so fucking boring in the later arcs. I know the author apparently really loves her so the only conclusion I can draw from it is that he saw how Rem was more popular (and how stupid incels simply couldn't understand why Emilia was mad at Subaru's idiocy at that royal election hall) so he overcorrected in an effort to make more people like her but really it just felt like he stripped her a lot of her agency she had early on. It's like she has no charm left.
When I first watched Re:Zero back then I thought it was so obvious that Rem was more of a narrative device to represent this sort of misogynist wish fulfilment for a retarded shut in who wants a literal obsessive and completely subservient maid that will support even their worst most selfish decisions with a bright smile and no questions asked and that the narrative was making the denial of that the point of his arc. Well, I still think that was somewhat the original intent for that but I guess millions made in merchandise later sort of shows money talks louder ig.

Yeah I used to like Emilia during the early days of the anime but now her character just plays up the clueless 5-y/o brain too much, its makes all her any screentime she gets feel so stale. Maybe I'm also sick of hearing her JP VA but that's a meta reason.

No. 491893

With Emilia, a lot of it has to do with Puck actually being a terrible father. He very intentionally raised her as sheltered and dumb as possible. She wasn't allowed to style her own hair or choose her own clothing, it was in the contract that he would do everything for her. This was cut from the anime, but before season 2 she had never even seen her own reflection. All mirrors were taken out of her rooms and she would leave it to Puck.
When Puck leaves, she becomes dumber because she no longer has him telling her what to do. In the books she spends days having temper tantrums, screaming and crying for Puck and pulling at her own hair.
With Rem, her deal is that she's paranoid, asocial and has a major guilt complex. She had severe baggage as a child because she was emotionally neglected while her sister was pushed as a political martyr for a race war group. Twins were considered a bad omen and she would have been murdered as a baby if her sister wasn't a reincarnation of their god.
When her village was massacred and her sister left permanently crippled, she hated the part of herself that was happy over it and decided to live the rest of her life as a substitute for her sister. Riswaal then blackmailed both sisters using each other and made them sign a contract to work as maids, though tbf the kingdom is also very racist and they wouldn't have been able to find work easily since Rem lacked any education.
When training to be a maid, they attacked the estate she worked at and murdered everyone, the only survivor was a baby she helped give birth to. She hunted down and tortured the murderers, but it still left her with even more baggage. She had no sense of self value as anything other than recompense for her sister and friends who died.
She's not subservient or obedient, she's just very passive aggressive and hates herself very much.

Reading back, guess this was a bit of an unnecessary autistic dump, but I kinda missed having these sorta discussions over characters past just archetype one liners and meta about the audience.

No. 491924

>>491893
Nonna, I know their internal motivations, unfortunately for me I am autistic enough to be caught up with the light novel of the series because I like the story enough. I just don't think having somewhat of an internal logic means a character is good.
Rem's characterization doesn't work in her favor when her character is basically only ever used for fanservice, she never mirrors Subaru's lack of self esteem in any way that truly matters or that is truly interesting and I would argue it's the opposite, she ends up becoming just a nothingburger character until she wakes up again. The most interesting part of her personality, the deification of her sister and her putting Subaru on a pedestal is never explored further because she justs serves as a backbone for Subaru after he fucks up and then literally gets on a comma after giving a melodramatic speech and forcing him to sort of confess to her (and then loses her memories when she wakes up so any sort of interesting development on that front is lost). The backstory works a lot better for Ram, who is a thousand times more interesting to me because her current state and her relationship with Roswaald showcases the two sides of what it means to be the one being worshiped and also the one doing the worshiping.
On the other hand, my comment on Emilia was less about her arc in season 2 but rather about Season 3 and the Pleiades Tower. I think stripping her of Puck was a great opportunity (and also sort of necessary for her plot progression) and while I appreciate SOME of her character regression, I think the story goes overboard with it. Even if Puck was her advisor, when she first saved Subaru it's clear that was a choice she made herself, when she called herself Satella to him Puck is even surprised by how daring she's being. In the royal election conflict she's open about why she's upset with Subaru, she explains that she doesn't understand him, that she cannot read his mind and that he upset her by going against the one thing that she asked him not to do. That was actually extremely mature and I was super excited to see her stand her ground on it, I don't see how those things only happened because of Puck (I actually disdain that notion because it would minimize her strong characterization and sort of imply it's nbt actually her but rather Puck). Of course losing her father, her most trusted and strongest companion would leave her in a particularly vulnerable state so her being indecisive in Season 2 was actually something good, I think, but in the following arcs she still lacks that inner strenght that she showed initially and the "omg EMT is so innocent and pure" jokes starts to grate me. I was particularly annoyed about her reaction over discovering about Subaru's feelings over Rem, I think a more natural reaction over finding out the guy who has been on your ass since day 1 promising you he loves you the most and only you actually has feelings for this other girl wouldnt be to say you're going to make him look only at you, but rather to feel either a sense of betrayal and anger. sure, one thing is when Rem was comatose, but after she wakes up and is alright, I hate that none of her jealousy is ever expressed outwards or in any way in a negative… wouldnt it be more interesting if this made her feel insecure? if she's Satella shouldnt she enbody envy more?? I kind of want to see her crash out over it idk give me some real drama I want to see her having discussions with Subaru again

No. 491940

>>491924
I still think Emilia will eventually work out, given in Wrath route author note there's a distinct point made that at the end when Subaru dies, it's not specific whether it was Ram or Emilia that did it and that Emilia did kill somebody in that room. Personally, I think the crash will happen when Rem sets her foot down about changing her mind about the relationship after what shes figured from her talks with Priscilla and forces Subaru to choose between them. I do think one of the issues with Rem in arc 7/8 is that Subaru is consistently trying to run away from her because he's idealized her to the extent that he believes what she wanted was an actual "hero" and not somebody who she wants to strive to be like.
That being said I personally don't think Emilia is Satella, but rather related to Satella by blood, like her niece through her father's side or something. Given that they're both still alive at the same time and her mother was Minerva.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Semi-OT(?), I recommended it once to a guy who said he doesn't watch a lot of anime (but likes long, serious stories and space opera-ish fiction) and some weeb tried to tell me that LoGH is just for hardcore anime fans and that it's too much to recommend to someone who's new to the medium. Bullshit. Shut the fuck up, weeaboo. I like it precisely because it's so different from the vast majority of anime, it's almost completely devoid of anime tropes and cliches. You don't need to be a hardcore weeb who only consumes isekai haremslop and obscure loli hentai to enjoy it.

Does LoGH have homoerotic tension, family feuds and in general interesting family dynamics? Is LoGH world has cynical or rather idealistic tone?
I started watching Gundam and enjoying the family and political drama, I love how it shows horrors of war without shock value.

But I think it is already a good adversary enough. Genuine story driven shows without perversion and unfunny humor are so few.

LoGH has something for (almost) everyone. It's a genuinely exciting story, with lots of drama and the occasional bit of comedy. It has husbandos for the yumes, fujobait for the fujos, practically zero ecchi fanservice, famous seiyuus for the koebutas, beautiful animation (sometimes) for the sakugafags, cool battles for the action fans, military aesthetics for the military autists, political themes for the 200 IQ Staceys, and history autism for the historyfags. Only thing it's lacking is cooler and more relevant female characters, which Gundam definitely has more of.

Speaking of Gundam, I got into LoGH after watching the first three Gundam compilation movies and wanting more like that. I became obsessed with LoGH and now can't get into the other Gundam shows kek, I recently started watching Zeta because of all the Kamillefags on here, but the writing and pacing just feel awkward, so I dropped it after 8 or so episodes. Can any Gundamfags tell me how to meme oneself into liking it? I really, really want to enjoy it and hopefully get to watch Gundam Wing and Iron Blooded Orphans which are the shows I'm the most interested in.

Hopefully you're right! I do see your point about Wrath If but just that being the initial reaction pissed me off immensely (mostly bc I always thought Subaru was toeing the line too much between them for my liking and it's a bit worse to me that Emilia had no idea whatsoever that was happening and specialy considering how naive she is, it feels like he was going behind her back idk), but I don't really see when that wil happen considering they are supposed to be separeted in the next act. Also, I agree with you about post-comatose Rem, even if I can't help but roll my eyes a little bit considering the moid-tendencies for the anime, I think it's a much more interesting position she is at now, my only gripe with it is that it feels a bit too late?? Like, I'm too invested about way too many side characters rn to care that much for it but at least I don't want to skip chapters when she appears anymore
Now, about Satella I definetly see that being the case too, specially because I simply don't believe in the theory that Subaru and Al are the same person, but I think their appearances are just too similar for them to just end up as cousins. Maybe some weird form of twins or clones? It did seem like Satella had a special relationship with Minerva too

>I simply don't believe in the theory that Subaru and Al are the same person
Kek I don't either. It's too easy of an answer, and they both just don't quite fit into each other when it comes to likes/dislikes. Al is emulating Subaru, but imo it's more that his own ego was broken down in one way or another, whether he was somebody isekai'd or if he was somebody who was forced to take in memories of Earth somehow.
The thing with Emilia and Satella is really weird Minerva "died" too early for Emilia's birth to make real sense to begin with. I don't think they're twins, but something happened with Minerva's pregnancy/Emilia's birth to the extent that 300 years manage to pass with Emilia still being a child. Minerva's authority might have been able to grant her the ability to keep Emilia alive in her stomach, and it is mentioned that elves were involved with her death, it could be that something was done at that point. Honestly, the answer being clone each time doesn't sit well with me, so I'm hoping that there's more to it.
>(mostly bc I always thought Subaru was toeing the line too much between them for my liking and it's a bit worse to me that Emilia had no idea whatsoever that was happening and specialy considering how naive she is, it feels like he was going behind her back idk)
Honestly, I think that was a bit intentional in that he is definitely toeing the line and its eventually going to go wrong. I really hope I'm not proven wrong in this lol, but I do think its going to be a messy love triangle rather than a harem, the story is way too centered around obsessive love and jealousy for it to not happen, but the story's detours and side characters really clog up the view, especially when it comes to Vollachia which wasn't meant to be an arc to begin with.
Btw who do you think is going to win the election? I don't think it can be anyone other than Felt.

Shinsekai yori is an unconventional mystery, but in my opinion it was very good and kept me guessing. To keep it as spoiler free as possible, it's set in a society where everyone has psychic/telekinetic abilities, and a group of friends tries to uncover its history after they learn something they shouldn't have. The manga (which I haven't read) has some sexualised covers, but I genuinely don't remember a SINGLE moment of fanservice in the anime so that's a plus. Rape is briefly mentioned once, to describe someone's crimes, but it's not shown on-screen. The story is dark as hell and it's kind of a slow burn though.

ayrt, Shinsekai Yori is one of my absolute favorite animes of all time. It is not based on a manga though, the anime is based on a novel which it follows fairly closely. The manga strives so far away from the OG novel it's basically just a hypersexual doujinshi.

Exacly, like yeah they're clearly connected but I feel like they are just way too different and even different to how Subaru behaves in the If stories.
People love to point out that they both have star names but conviniently ignore that Aldebaran, the star, is known for seemingly following Pleiades but not actually being a part of it. I've also seen people proposing he's a Subaru or Flugel clone made by Echidna from pieces of his memories but for me it just sounds like a rehashed version of that same theory trying to fill some gaps in logic. I don't think what Echidna meant with them having the "same origin" was anything more than the isekai/Japan aspect plus I do hope they don't go overboard with cloning plotlines. What's your own personal thought on it tho?
Also, about the love triangle I do hope you're right about it! Being fair with Tappei he never really indulges in Subaru glazing that much the fandom sure fucking does tho, I'm so tiredddd of seeing posts about how Subaru "deserves" both or either of them as if they're trophies for him being a normal good person like genuinely I hate moids you could scream the point of the story to their faces and they still won't fucking get it and he usually gets his dues whenever he's being stupid and selfish so there's hope. People got overly attached to an off hand joke that Rem makes that is supposed to show how ridiculously low her self esteem is because they consider the "battle" lost already. I hope it gets messy tho I want to see Emilia angry at him again because I have been pissed off on her behalf for too long plus it's been nice seeing Rem stand for herself more
Now, about the election I need to admit that I'm way too biased because Reinhard and Felt grew into becoming my favorites and while I used to be a Crusch truther, there's really no one else that could be, Felt is just too primed for it. Also, going off on vibes alone, I think it's set up to mirror the starting scene of the very first LN, where Felt runs away with Emilia's badge and Emilia is unable to get it back because she stops to save Subaru as in, it will end up being between Felt and Emilia maybe with a headstart for Emilia and then she'll prioritize saving Subaru over it or something. I'm very excited nonetheless

>What's your own personal thought on it tho?
Honestly, I've been racking my head around it for a good while, I also hope that he's not just a clone/au Subaru looped back to the past, it would feel like a cheap answer for something meant to be one of "the three great mysteries" of the story, in the same way people try to make Pandora responsible for everything. Personally, I think Al is someone who was broken down and molded into who he is now, not artificially created by Echidna.
I definitely agree on you with the "Following Star" bit. I've been wondering if his name's other deal, "Eye of Taurus" might also be a clue but it could be more of a hint about how his power works, with how he needs to "lock in" on a territory like a bullseye for it to work.
Tbh I like reading the more silly out there theories like "what if Subaru's parents had another child?" and "he's the cashier from the first episode!"(tbh they do kind of look alike, ouc attached), it's a little annoying when people stick to the most straightforward theory instead of having a bit of fun with it.

>I'm so tiredddd of seeing posts about how Subaru "deserves" both or either of them as if they're trophies for him being a normal good person
Lol same, they also have a habit of whitewashing Subaru when a part of what makes him an interesting character is the fact that he's an incredibly needy and obsessive landmine of a guy despite his well meaning intentions.
>Now, about the election
I never thought of it being a parallel, that makes a lot of sense tbh. I quite like it. I remember Tappei mentioning somewhere once that he was very specific about the how the anime would portray that scene because it held secrets, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was what he was talking about.

I think 2003 fullmetal alchemist is the anime that has left the strongest impression on me ever since I initially watched it 7 or so years ago. Brotherhood instantly became my favorite anime and gave me that feeling of emptiness but then I watched 2003 and it changed me. For a 12 year old me, it was very heavy and the last few episodes in particular filled me with indescribable feeling of sadness and emptiness tenfold. After I finished it I couldn’t stop thinking about the ending for months, it’s really emotionally heavy for a kid. I think Edward elrics death is the only time I’ve cried so hard over a show, game or whatever to the point where I nearly threw up. They get popular anime adaptations by competent studios later so the art style looks more intentionally cutesy like with Clannad for example like >>492682 said. i mean i dont hate sol, i like barakamon for example, but that one has an overarching plot that develops too over time even if most of the episodes have sol-like pacing and scenes. just these episodical ones where nothing ever changes are a bit annoying to me.

also WW was kinda random in quality to me. some scenes were really good/funny, some stuff was just weird and felt out of place for me. might watch another episode.

and the hero stuff surprised me a bit. i really hate 3d in anime so i was biased, but the story has some interesting turns that were keeping me interested. the style also changes kinda randomly wich is weird. need to watch another ep too i guess.

i also forgot moonrise, saw the first ep of that the other day and i liked it. might be okay too.

Just torrent anime off Nyaa? It has tons of fansubs and I think they still sub stuff even newer anime. I'm in a discord server of some anime and OST archiving group and they sub an episode of some ancient obscure anime everyday and post it to Nyaa. I even sort of convinced the owner of the server to sub some old Japanese anime that only has a Russian and Arabic dubs online. He's still thinking about it, but because the movie is the first Japanese CGI anime ever, he might consider it seriously because of the archival side of things.

What would you consider good "beginner anime" for normie/semi-normie friends that have some interest in looking into anime?
While I never really got into neither the manga nor anime, I usually recommend Death Note - from what I know it just has enough anime silliness to introduce the more odd aspects of it without detracting from the story or characters, it has an appealing style and most people enjoy a good crime/mystery drama.

It was ok, really overrated though. I couldn't really get that into it despite being an anxious person too because it feels like it just uses that aspect mostly for comedy antics and never actually goes very in depth on anything. It's "OMG SO RELATEABLE" bait for anxious male otaku rather than a sincere exploration of a socially anxious girl. It's way too trope-y and surface level but men eat that up just like how they love the drunk girl in the show even though her entire personality is just being an alcoholic. The animation quality and songs like vidrel carried it.

I also don’t mind that sometimes. Depending on the premise and skill of the writer it’s one of those rare cases of moid writing that moids so hard it unintentionally produces semi-subversive results. In this case, the obsession with waifu purity means a world where men are side characters, if not completely absent. The absence of males usually means the female characters are allowed a wider range of personality and agency than your average shonen slop heroine. In your typical shonen, female characters are usually relegated to being damsels in distress, cheerleaders, love interests and so on but in all-female casts they’re allowed to be morally complex and overpowered and have motivations that have nothing to do with men. Touhou and Madoka are two examples that come to mind.

I've always been a super casual anime watcher. Sometimes I read manga. It took me until recently to fully realize a lot of the animes don't follow the whole manga, for some reason I subconsciously had it in my mind an anime can only be made once the manga is done because otherwise they don't have the full story and that didn't make sense to me! So it just now clicked that I can go back to old favorite animes and read more of the stories I used to love because half the story is left in the manga.

also a lot of shojo series that got adapted into anime never got a second season because the series was still ongoing, like ohshc. fruits basket had major plot points rewritten because the manga was still ongoing, but at least they made a remake that covers the whole series now.

I've always found it ironic that the "no males should exist" rule that's meant to placate moids' feelings about getting "cucked" by a 2D XY—unironically paves the way to have more fleshed out female characters whose goals aren't motivated around being some cheerleader/love interest for another male character (which, let's admit, are self-inserts for the male audience anyway).

But it's also kind of fucked for fleshed out female characters to exist, half of the population have to be yeeted out of the picture. It's like these writers can't imagine a female character whose characterization revolve around dick (like the Sword Art Online author who admitted that he can't write female characters unless they're love interests).

It's too late to add filler episodes imo, it could have worked if they added more episodes before the Shibuya arc to show Yuji, Megumi and Nobara working on smaller missions and showing their daily lives. It would ruin the pacing for the next seasons unless they decide to animate the month between Gojo getting out of jail and his fight against Sukuna so we don't have tiny flashbacks every five minutes once he dies. They would maybe work on an OAV later that's removed from the main story bit it would just be fanservice.

I have only seen the first season and some OVAs thus far, but you're making me want to pick up the anime again (i was already intending to though, just faster). It's also my guilty pleasure, it reminds me of Hetalia in the sense that's it's so unabashed with its autism that you can't help but appreciate the amount of soul that went into it.
>Second season has one of my all time favorite anime episode in it with eila and sanya (sweet duet is also such a wonderful song)
They are so cute together!I heard there's even more Eila/Sanya moments in the later seasons as well, even if I'm a Minna/Mio truther at heart.

It’s as if there’s an unspoken sex/gender hierarchy that you can pretend doesn’t exist in these fantasy single-sex casts. I suspect this is why so many nonas in this thread admit to finding enjoyment in watching autistic moe slop like Strike Witches.

Interesting that the opposite style of writing, the “no girls allowed” kind where all women are inconsequential or nonexistent, also has a similar effect. The misogynistic writing unintentionally enables escapism by creating a single sex fantasy land where you can pretend misogyny does not exist since women are out of the picture. You see this a lot with moid-targeted media like JJBA (shounenslop and sports manga are textbook examples). Yes, there is the fujobait angle but that’s more obvious when it’s a female writer invoking this trope (eg Katekyo Hitman Reborn or Free).

>>503344
Did we even watch the same show? Sayaka witching out over Kyosuke was clearly meant to illustrate that she was a dumb idealistic teenage girl who got taken advantage of by the magical girl system. Her desperate simping over a guy led to her downfall.

As a fujo and one of the Strike Witches fags on this thread, this makes a lot of sense. A lot of the anime I enjoy tend to be homoerotic in nature (or at least to my fujo sixth sense they are) or are women/girls doing fun or cool things. Both of these animanga tend to have a near exclusively same sex cast, and if they aren't then the opposite sex characters aren't very relevant. It's also probably why ensemble shounen slop and harem anime always rubbed me the wrong way despite being fine with other scrotey and moidy content. Maybe it's a case by case basis?

Probably, everyone has their own individual tolerance level for moid shit too. It’s why I thought Demon Slayer was just alright even if was popular among normie women. For haremslop, depends on how charismatic the female characters are. It’s not a harem, but I surprisingly enjoyed Akame ga Kill since the moid characters were mostly useless while the female characters were driving the plot. It helps that Akame was the de facto protagonist.

iirc a lot of dub voice actors actually do have a background in theater, but imo the reason anime dub acting is so uniquely bad is that they to imitate Japanese voice acting methods, which ends up sounding grating to English speakers. Overacting works in the Japanese context but sounds unnatural and forced in English, and hence you end up with “EVERYONE IS SHOUTING AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY!” sort of scenes. The high-pitched breathy anime girl voices are a unique affliction in the world of anime voice acting. Hearing that kind of voice acting is enough to get me to tune out since the voices are so grating and fake. I know the Nelvana Cardcaptor Sakura dub was widely panned, but at least I give them credit for casting a young girl for Sakura.

The universally agreed upon “good dubs” tend not to suffer from the problems above because 1) the shows have voice acting direction that matches the tone of the show (Cowboy Bebop, FMA Brotherhood, FLCL) or 2) the voice actors shine on their own merits (Yu Yu Hakusho, Yugioh). 4Kids voice actors were legitimately talented, it’s too bad they had crap direction.

Have you ever watched propaganda anime? i really like The Cockpit, an OVA where in the first episode a luftwaffe ace pilot redeems himself by shooting down a nazi plane carrying a nuke bomb on its way to nuking Washington. The episode ends with the emo nazi pilot saying that being a coward is better than ''selling your soul to the devil'' and that the people who drop a bomb would be remembered as the ''coldest people on earth''. The second OVA is about a Ohka pilot(which is a Kamikaze attack-aircraft) crashing on an american carrier. Before the carrier sinks the captain gets informed that they dropped the bomb in Hiroshima, and it ends with the American captain realizing that they are worse than the Japanese. It's majestic, pure kino.

I rewatched Code Geass R2 after some ~14 years and I have to say I misjudged it back then. It's definitely not a 'trainwreck', even though it derails a bit in the middle. Overall, I appreciate it much more nowadays, although my impressions of some elements are vastly different (even the opposite) from my first watch.

I remember HATING the 'back to school' scenario, but I find it mostly okay now, though it definitely takes too much screentime in a show that is two-cour. Consequently, there is a lack of balance - the story spends too much time on Lelouch leading a double life while the second half of the show suffers from having to cram in too many things in the limited episode count. (Sayoko successfully cosplaying as Lelouch FOR DAYS and nobody suspecting a thing is also too absurd kek.) I don't find Gino and Anya (or the majority of other new characters) a waste of space anymore - on the contrary, I appreciate that an attempt was made to include Britannian soldiers that are NOT genocidal maniacs (because watching Suzaku being surrounded solely with psychos with megalomania was getting old fast). I still find Kaguya and Tamaki as grating as before - two shitty characters that have too many lines to remind you they exist, but neither matters or does anything important in the end.

The show does crumble when the China arc starts and the retardation only piles up until the firing of FLEIJA. Really, the whole China loli empress subplot is the most detrimental element overall for taking so much time that could have been spent on something else and giving nothing in return. I don't know, maybe they were contractually-obliged to shill their Chinese characters and a new robot, but that could have been achieved in one episode at most. Lelouch not teaming up with Xing Ke from the moment they meet in battle (when both of them had the same objective) is such a retard move on his part (and cost them losing Kallen), not to mention having the perfect opportunity to Geass the entire eunuch court + Britannian officials and not taking it. Is mental slowness and a massive fall in IQ a side effect of Geass overuse? Doesn't look like, at least not in a show that gives characters funny red anime eyes to indicate they have been Geassed. Then the MC goes back to school and takes part in some bullshit dating games while Kallen is captured (and possibly tortured), NOT GIVING A SINGLE FUCK ABOUT THE MILITARY, KALLEN, HIS STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES - spare me. This is beyond dumb and well out of place at that point. Then comes the cherry on the top - Lelouch inviting war onto the Japanese shores WHEN ANYWHERE ELSE WOULD DO. It's like he wanted Nunnally and his school friends to be killed? He could have started engaging Britannia all over the world, but chose Japan specifically as his first target, because??? He wanted to raze Japan to the ground for some reason? Apparently, the basic strategy of bleeding out your enemy in some remote, sparsely-populated place and swiftly annexing the unprotected territories is not a logical choice of action when you want to keep the damage to minimum? Why the fuck even choose military action at this stage other than as a smokescreen? When you can infiltrate and Geass everybody in power - with the war serving only as a cover-up for the ensuing chaos/casualties among the higher-ups? It still gets worse… THE RETARD ORDERS KALLEN TO KILL SUZAKU WHILE KNOWING FULL WELL THAT 1) SUZAKU CARRIES A WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION ON HIM 2) SUZAKU HAS BEEN GEASSED TO LIVE 3) HIS SISTER IS SOMEWHERE IN THE VICINITY. Imagine having the nerve to character-assassinate your MC in this manner. I could never.

Thankfully, the cringe ends more or less after that point and more fun things ensue.

The actual best part of the show - Suzaku and Lelouch teaming up and the aftermath - is allocated too little time, because so many episodes were sacrificed to bullshit and it hurts. It's clear that the writers wanted to include much more, but were forced to make haphazard cuts to fit the two-cour format. I would have done without another school festival episode to actually see the two protags subjugate the world (and Britiannian nobles/other powerful people shitting their pants at Emperor Lelouch's revolution - that would have been so satisfying). It would have been nice to switch the perspective to Suzaku for a bit, especially once he attains the DON'T MAKE AN ENEMY OUT OF ME mode (him roasting Nina over FLEIJA was pure brilliance), but I guess developing the China loli and her subplot was a bigger priority for the production team. Why was I denied seeing Lelouch cackling at the world order crumbling down? Why was his revolution not televised? Why was his (alleged) reign of terror so sterile and devoid of actual terror? He made some people into his puppets and that's it? He put down the nobles who rebelled - is that his biggest sin? He stole some weapon of mass destruction and waved it above everybody's heads (just like every nuclear power in the present time does?)? I don't even know whether this restraint in showing his (alleged) atrocities can be traced back to censorship (can't have the MC do REALLY BAD THINGS) or the limited run-time. Why should the world hate him again? As compared to the shit Britannia pulled under Charles, he seems small-time. Dividing up your country and making the elite mad (and ordering them to clean floors) are prank-tier - not something the entire world (outside of Britannia) should work themselves up about. Which bring me to the Zero Requiem and what a failed concept it is because of the above…

I don't know what you can achieve with the Zero Requiem if you aren't even going all out on the 'evil emperor' front? WHY should some poorfag from a nation subjugated by Britannia hate Lelouch and view him as Satan incarnate? On the contrary, the powerless and marginalised would sooner cheer him on while he mops the floor with the elite and kills any entitled shithead who is retarded enough from inbreeding to opposes him. You kidnapped a bunch of representatives from a couple of nations? - Cheers, mate! Keep it up! The world needs fewer loli empresses. If you are a nobody, the Evil Emperor gains nothing from using his (alleged) hypnotic powers on you. You bet their equivalent of AO3 would be filled to the brim with Emperor Lelouch x Reader pornfics of His Majesty using his powers to make (You) into his sex slave. So what is the Zero Requiem for again? To rile up the masses once their idol gets removed? Just a sideshow for entertainment? I don't see anybody being particularly glad that Lelouch is no more other than the elite (who he messed with) - and once they get back on their feet, why should they concern themselves with the needs and wants of those below them?

Years ago, I thought the Zero Requiem conclusion was poignant and fitting - now I view it as meaningless, plain retardation. I don't see CC going along with the Zero Requiem ever (she chose to live for Lelouch after all) - and Lelouch breaking their contract (and fucking up Suzaku's life even further by making him kill his friend) for such a pointless, '??? profit where' plan. It screams OOC to me. Suzaku never even wanted to kill Lelouch (he didn't kill him after the events of S1, just brought him back, even though he was going mad from grief at Euphie's loss and their relationship was much worse then). The talk from five years ago in the anime critical thread got me wondering, what are some more examples for series that just don't hit the same when you're not the right age for it? It was specifically FLCL that was mentioned back then, that it's just not the same when you're not a teenage boy, but there's definitely more series like that. Eva is the first that comes to mind for me, my father still sees it as the peak of animation while I don't have many feelings about it one way or another, but then again he was like fifteen when he watched it while I was in my twenties already. I also feel like no one will ever be able to appreciate Black Butler the same way a fourteen year old teenage girl can lmao.

I mentioned Bocchi earlier, and now that I've finished the first season I'm sure someone in high school would be able to relate to in ways that I can't anymore. FLCL is the same, I don't care about it much, I only ever watched it as an adult.

Most shoujo and shounen is definitely a 'you had to be under 13 when it came out' but that's kinda built in to the genre imo. I never had any desire to watch BNHA or JJK but I was really into Naruto because it was on Toonami when I was younger. I find that I still enjoy stuff like Inuyasha and Ouran, though, for some reason, and I wonder if it's because I'm just chasing that shipping/romance high from 20 years ago kek.

Maybe I have the same brain throughout my years, but like 99% of things I liked as a kid or teenager are the same I still like as an adult, with the added bonus of being more critical of sexaulization or pedophilia and other negative parts I was unaware of as a kid. I grew up with Bleach and AOT, I still enjoy Bleach, and I was a manga reader of AOT and hated the ending back when it released when I was in high school, and rewatching the anime as an adult and seeing the ending again just made me hate it more. There was this shoujo anime called The Anonymous Noise that I watched as a teenager and thought was absolute trash, rewatched it as an adult and just burst out laughing. I disliked Eva as a teenager, still hate it as an adult. I used to love World Masterpiece Theater as a kid and I enjoyed stuff from it as an adult. I loved Monster as a teenager and read the manga as an adult and loved it. The only thing I'd say my opinion changed about is Death Note, as a teenager it was cool, but now as an adult it looks like an absolute joke I can't take seriously.

Tbh I could watch any anime from my childhood no problem, partially because I already know what's gonna happen, and because I just trust the quality to be decent. Can't say the same about anything modern though. I started the series when I was like 15 or 16 and I'm still obsessed at my big age so you're kind of right. In my case I'm discovering manga and anime I like but that I would have been totally obsessed with if I started it when I was younger. JJK comes to mind, I do like it for what it is but if I followed the manga as a teenager I would have been obsessed with it the whole time. I assume it's because the mangaka and I are almost the same age so he was inspired by things that I liked as a teenager to begin with. It applies to shojo manga as well, when I read Fruits Basket and Nana again I'm a lot more picky with them and there are characters I like less than I used to despite liking these series as a whole but I was a huge fan as a teenager. I would have loved Magic Knight Rayearth a lot more if I read it as a kid but I read it just a few month ago and it was just a regular good manga with very good art to me. I assume grown men have the audacity to call Naruto a good manga to shit on more recent shonen manga because they read it or watched it when they were young enough to be the target audience and wouldn't be impressed at all if they only started it now.

I am already aware that trannies have the analytical skill and nuanced thinking of a fucking potato, but I don't think a lot of them really watched more than a few episodes of the early parts of the show - if they ever even watched anything at all and don't just feed off each other's projection onto the characters (like they do with so many other franchises instead of actually looking them up). It's just so ironic that trannies projects so hard on a show, specifically on a character, where one of the main points is the rejection of the patriarchal structure and gender roles thrust upon women (and men). The entire point of Utena as a character, similarly to Ludwig, is that despite how they dress and act they're still women. Utena never rejects her identity as a woman or anything that defines her as one either - she just strives for an ideal that is usually reserved for men.

I can't remember for the life of me which anime it was, but I tried another 2deep4u sad show which everyone raved about at the time, and I distinctly remember LAUGHING at one character's backstory because it was so fucking absurd. I'm pretty sure an intruder breaks into her house, lines up her entire family in the living room, and threatens to kill them if she doesn't find an expensive vase in her parent's room. While she runs around searching for the vase instead of escaping through a window while she's unsupervised, the intruders start killing her family anyway (???) and they all just sit there waiting to be butchered one by one. The girl finally finds the vase and struggles to bring it downstairs until there's only one relative left to save (I think it was her dad?) But before she can give it to the intruder, she DROPS IT, smashing it into a million pieces. Obviously this pisses the guy off and he dramatically kills the last relative right in front of her. I can't remember if he also kills her, or if she is for some inexplicable reason spared and kills herself later. The show took place in some kind of afterlife and this was how she died. Agreed. It also disproportionately puts women or girls into these roles so their misery can be fetishized by scrotes to sell more waifu merchandise. And, if not, it's to make a male character's actions/motivations 'relatable' to the same audience. Moids, especially teenagers, love a good angsty backstory for their Mary Sue SI, something that makes them 'badass' instead of 'pathetic' (so something like 'whole family murdered' instead of 'raped'). Tbh I'm bi and I felt so disgusted seeing that shit. I went to /u/ at one point and found out from the himedanshis raving about it that the anime director forced that shit in. It literally was OOC. Why do moids make themselves so hateable.

Reading your list we literally agree on almost everything kek, right down to being rec'd AzuDao after Lucky Star and finding it boring. The one thing that's different is that I liked Haruhi because of how she dragged around Kyon and he had to go along with it for literal time bending plot reasons. I liked how they were "bound" to each other by fate because it seemed romantic, but I agree with everything else, like the groping made me so uncomfortable. Moids make themselves so hateable etc. If Haruhi took out its fanservice and focused on the supernatural aspects and the relationship between Haruhi and Kyon it could have actually been one of the best anime imo. It had potential but it's so dated now.

I'm the author's fan in general and I don't really think he's ever been big on yuri (and I say this as a lesbian who'd actually enjoy that content in written form from a writer I generally enjoy). His stuff is always straight or, intentionally or not, fujobaity.
What the other nonnie is saying about it being shoehorned in by the director sounds believable to me.

Unrelated to your complaints, I still don't see the appeal of Shizaya beyond superficial "they hate each other" shipping. Shinra is obviously incredibly straight so I get why fujos don't land on Shinra/Izaya as a ship but Izaya's had far more life-altering history with him that's shaped who he is today. Their backstory in the novels is insane and iirc he's one of the only people who's ever held sway over Izaya. But maybe that's just me being into depressing onesided ships (don't you kind of want to see a guy like Izaya suffer…)

I know it seems to be a really unpopular opinion on lc, but I found Violet Evergarden to be the only "sad" anime I ever enjoyed and not considering it misery porn that hits you over the head with how sad it is since the show's theme is about moving on from tragedy and finding your own happiness in a post-war world (I think what makes the emotional beats work is because it's based on a series of novels written by a woman). The slow pace of the first episodes really pays off later in the show, since they mainly works as a way to fully understand Violet and her character development.
That said, the show definitely have a couple of elements I have a lot of problems with though.

>Cowboy Bebop
The episodic structure felt lame and really boring. Usually the benefit of episodic narratives is that they have more space for things like character interactions/building characters' relationships and worldbuidling, but there's barely any worldbuilding and the show takes way too long for the characters to start showing just a little sliver of caring a bit about each other I know JelloaApocalipse isn't the best person to quote, but I remember him describing Cowboy Bebop as the characters having little interaction other than the occasional middle finger, and that's more or less how it felt to me and the ending just comes out of nowhere.
Having a character that is literally just "the Unabomber if he was anime" made me kek though.

>Boogiebop Phantom

I don't think it's a "I didn't get it thing", but the non chronological order and constantly jumping the episode's main character felt like it just muddled the plot for the sake of being pretentious, and sometimes it felt edgy too.
I remember reading somewhere that the original novels don't even have all the chronological jumps, which makes me wonder if they just did that to be artsy fartsy as a Serial Experiments Lain larp.

>Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou

This is only a "classic" with the iyashikeifag subcategory of OVAfags, but I remember there was a period some years ago where people would glaze the hell out of it for being "aesthetic" and especially "relaxing". I watched it and it was just boring.

Had to force myself to push through these (I don't like leaving series unfinished).

No. 508607

It is 26, but I got intrigued over this odd mix-up and did a quick google search:

"Series Notes:

Princess Tutu is available in dubbed format for free streaming (with commercials) from Hulu.

The TV airing of this show was unusual in that the first half was 30-minute episodes, while the next twelve 30-minute episodes were broken into twenty-four 15-minute episodes to fit a smaller timeslot, followed by the finale which was broadcast again as a 30-minute episode. Thus, MAL and other such sites have this show listed as having 38 episodes (13 full-length, 24 half-length, and one more full-length), while on Hulu and streaming sites it's listed as 26 as the DVDs restored the episodes to the intended format."

Not that it's my favorite show or anything, but it's a fun watch. It's also nice to see a female mc just be fine with being GNC and it not being a troon thing, even if half the fanbase is people just trooning her out and reading into random shit she says and assuming that means she's a troon because they're retarded. The visuals aged pretty well too and the OP song is still a banger. My main issue with it is still the same one I had back when I watched it the first time, the lack of a conclusive ending.

Gundam. I've tried several shows already (new and old), but something about the pacing makes it too boring. ugly art style, no likable characters, no memorable/funny/interesting moments, genuinely the most boring thing I have ever seen and I say this as someone who likes other cgdct and slice of life shows that don't have any real plot.

>dragon ball

the ugliest art style and character designs I have ever seen in an anime, filled with random out of place pedo and coomer garbage, I hate all of the male characters and don't like the worldbuilding, autismo powerleveling bs.

>great teacher onizuka

main character is a gross pedo - the whole show is just some loser delinquent becoming a teacher so he can lust after high school girls, worst scroteslop anime I've seen.

>neon genesis evangelion and end of evangelion

no likeable characters, stupid plot, boring 2deep4u slop filled with random christcuck symbolism - the soundtrack, animation, character/mecha designs and voice acting were good but not enough to really make it worth watching.

I also agree with the other anons mentioning haruhi - I thought it was so boring and also hated the gross fanservice plus didn't like most of the characters. I'm easily impressed and enjoy most of the other "classic" anime, these were the only few that stood out to me as dislikeable.

Any show that Tomino actively works in is insufferable because he's a raging autist and it's painfully reflected in the show. The rushed feeling you're describing is because of him. It explained sooo many of the series I thought I was supposed to like but just didn't, they simply have garbage taste. Anons have mentioned a bunch already.

Otherwise yeah Cowboy Bebop always seemed like one I should have liked, but it bored me. I don't like episodic action, it's not enough time for me to get invested in what's happening on screen. I really only like episodic comedy.

I was actually thinking of posting something about this just a few hours before you made this post, because some anons have warned me about 90s harem anime for moids but they weren't as bad as I expected.
I've noticed that, despite them being harems and having coomer designs, old-school anime for scrotes (at least, the non-hentai stuff) was far more tolerable than the borderline hentai slop we have today. Obviously, unnecessary female nudity for the purpose of giving scrotes jerkoff material was already common back then, but aside from that, it's obvious how much worse ecchi fanservice is now. I don't know, maybe it's the fact that they at least tried to make female bodies look somewhat natural (imo your pic qualifies) and also moeshit and pedoshit hadn't degraded the whole medium as much. Also, what you mentioned, plus female characters designs seemed less blatantly coomer imo.

Agree with everything you said. Seeing art of 90s harems shocks me because the women dressed in much cuter clothes instead of the hooker wear they’re in today with more realistic proportions to boot. Anime has always been a medium for coomers but as pedoshit became more and more common, the standard started to shift to the point it became the norm altogether. I wonder if it’s why I’m able to tolerate and even enjoy anime like Golden Boy despite it being the antithesis of everything I typically enjoy in an anime.
>>509388
Oh don’t get me wrong here, they’re both scrote fanservice and every anime would be better without it. Directors being such assholes to rewrite scripts as they please is something surprising I learned today:
>MARUYAMA: Did I really write anything for that show? [Everyone starts chuckling] I'd say it's not in my memory, but if I did (and I possibly did), it would've been because there wasn't anyone else available at that time. And then the director would've said, “Can you be a pinch hitter for that?” It would've been a moment in production when we were short on time and budget. If there wasn't anyone else willing to do it—and I would have never volunteered for this—but if there's no time or money, and if it's something to appease the director, I'd just do it. A great director could always take a good screenplay and make a good work out of it. A good one would just rewrite a badly written script and do as he pleases. I think I excelled at coming in as a pinch-hitting writer who could deliver something that could be easily rewritten.
>I believe I wrote under a pen name the most for Ashita no Joe, using names like “Kobayashi” and others. This is because Director Dezaki, regardless of who the screenwriter was, would've perhaps used three lines at most from the script and come up with the rest himself. So, most writers would just quit the show in anger and protest. Eventually, there would be no one left, and I thought, “Well, if he's just going to use three lines anyway, I could just write up a general guideline, and he would happily rewrite the script, then make a good show out of it.” So that's how I ended up doing a lot of substitute pen name writing.

Late reply is late, but imo it’s not just about being a certain age, but more so about experiencing the anime in a specific point of time, that changes your perception of the show.

For example lots of anons itt view TTGL as average moidslop, which is perfectly understandable if you saw it for the first time in 2025. However, if you were around during the peak of its popularity then it’s easier to understand why it was so hyped. NGE brought us the deconstruction of the mecha genre and the “power of friendship always prevails” trope at the turn of the millennium; TTGL was the reconstruction of the “love and friendship saves the day” trope. Its main appeal was bombastic spectacle, which was fresh then not anymore. Oldfags will remember TTGLfags on /cm/ (back when it was one of the few female-dominated boards on 4chan) and how they hyped the fuck out of the show. With Viral, Kamina and Simon to say the least there was plenty of material for the girls. TTGL hype was so strong Adiane was one of the few female characters “allowed” on /cm/.

The same can be said about Haruhi, which has aged very poorly. Haruhi got popular around the time anime really started to penetrate the mainstream in the U.S., so the idea of a niche quirky non-linear slice of life/romance with sci-fi elements was practically unheard of for Western audiences who were used to mass appeal exports like DBZ or Sailor Moon. AFAIK the Japanese publishers deemed Haruhi too otaku-ish to have appeal to Westerners but the popularity of fansubs proved otherwise. Memeable elements like the Hare Hare Yukai dance made Haruhi a pioneer of weeb culture. But now the light novel high school slice of life genre is oversaturated to death, and meme-worthy dances are practically a requirement.
