Zombieland Saga is so mid. A good concept buried under mediocrity and your typical idolshit trash songs that might as well have been composed by AI. It never develops its gimmick (zombie idols) properly, because there are just too many plotholes and inconsistencies and we need to shill the screeching we call 'music', because Avex wants to sell CDs. Why do all of them even want to become an idol group? You are immortal now, so you can do whatever you want, you don't need to worry about drinking and eating or falling sick. For many of them their families and friends are still alive and it's not only illogical, but also peak cruelty not to contact them. You could have chosen to be the family vampire and hang around your relatives for as long as they are alive, even becoming a sort of legendary wise sage as decades pass. Instead they choose to be slaves that perform crappy songs as background noise in a group, while for many of them being a solo act was the peak of their careers or aspirations (that was definitely true for idols in the past).
A bunch of slave girls coping is not a good idea for a story.

No. 392590

Speaking of idol animes, would Healer Girl be considered one? The girls aren't exactly idols it's set in a universe where you can use song as a magic alternative medicine, how it exactly works isn't really covered and the anime is more of a musical than a jukebox show, but it still has a handful of idol-related themes imo.

I found the first season a lot more boring than the rest, I really enjoyed the movie and the second season. Not sure why. It made me realize that many of the anime and manga I followed as a kid and then teenager were kind of the reverse, I would love the beginning and then dislike the last arcs or second half, or at least find them a lot more boring, but with this one and a few other recent series now it's the reverse for me.

Even though she was clearly waifubait. Zero Two was honestly a very interesting character, it's pretty hard to find a female character having "am I the monster?" type of internal turmoil. She really should've been the protagonist instead of that bland what's-his-face.

And though I do dislike what's-his-face for being dreadfully, painfully boring—his dynamic with Zero Two was very interesting. It's not really common for the male character to have "I can fix her, you don't know her she's just misunderstood!" Type of mentality towards their female love interest.

The golden age music was excellent, the stories actually focused on professional idols who take their job seriously instead of bullshit, and the entire cast was good, memorable, and likable, remarkable stuff for idolslop. Anybody know concretely if there's a reason why canon-divergent endings are less common in modern anime adaptations? I've always wondered if it was because studios got burned too many times with the (at least from what I can tell) unpopularity of such endings, or if it was because of some other shift in the industry I'm unaware of. I do vastly prefer that nowadays we get adaptations that simply drop off if they don't make it to the end of the original material since I've seen it happen more than once where another studio takes up the work where they left off down the line.
Pic not particularly related, it's just one of many instances I can recall of this phenomenon.

No. 395138

>>395136
Nowadays studios try and milk series for all they're worth. In the past anime series would be made often as an advertisement for the manga, so they would adapt a couple volumes of an ongoing series and then come up with their own original ending when it came time to end the TV adaptation. Nowadays, anime itself is more prized as a product, especially with how big streaming has gotten. Rather than adapting a few volumes of a manga and then moving on to adapting a different project, its considered preferable to continually adapt a successful series. This way they can continually make all the money they can from a dedicated fanbase, rather than simply trying to boost manga sales.
You can see this in action with stuff like Blue Exorcist, which got a 2-cour adaptation with an original ending about a decade ago, but when producers realized Blue Exorcist is a valuable series they went back and made second and third seasons following the manga to cash-in on the fanbase.

A few years/decades ago if a manga or light novel series was adapted you'd often have a lot of differences, a different ending, a bunch of filler episodes or they wouldn't adapt the entire series because studios often adapted something with no interruption and would run out of material at some point after catching up to the original series. Nowadays studios are a lot more willing to create separate seasons that are aired in very separate periods or even years. If JJK, MHA or AOT were series from the 90s or 2000s they would have like 100 filler episodes each, they would make a lot of scenes way slower and less dynamic to buy time before catching up to the manga, they would still be airing right now and everyone would be begging for the FMAB treatment. A good example is Black Butler, it started as an adaptation, then became its own thing while still somewhat inspired by what Yana Toboso said about what she planned for the ending, the second season is only original content and years later we're having much more accurate adaptations that only happen once in a while.

You don't know what the bechdel test means then. Sailor Moon has plenty of scenes that pass it. You'd be hard pressed to find anime that doesn't mention men at all, ever, though (if that's what your skewed definition of bechdel test means). But again, that's not what the bechdel test means.
The test isn't meant to be applied to long running series anyway.

Nonnie are you acting dense on purpose? Others understood what I meant so idk why you’re having such a hard time. You sound like a mansplaining redditor scrote tbh. I know what the bechdel test is. I used the term loosely to describe an anime that doesnt have girls arguing about men or getting into drama over men and that is clearly happening a whole lot in sailor moon. Not sure why you’re in denial about that. I like sailor moon btw I feel like you interpreted my words as sailor moon hate and that’s why you’re mad kek

Hakumei and Mikochi, about two women (there aren't humans in this series, all "humans" are little people like them) living in a lush and richly crafted fictional world. They live together in a house built into a tree, Hakumei is a carpenter/builder by trade and Mikochi is chef/seamstress. The author has a great appreciation for both nature and traditional folk craft that shines through in the series.
The majority of their friends are women with diverse personalities and jobs. The few males they engage with are either talking animals (not furbait, they're actual weasels and mice and such) or various local business owners.
A great heart healing series.

No, I'm not acting dense on purpose it's just annoying to see terms completely misused like that. It's nigh impossible to find any non movie where women don't talk about men throughout it's entire duration, because it's natural for it to appear in conversation at some point, no matter how female exclusive the piece of media is. I know I'm starting to sound pedantic but this is really tickling my autism in a way I didn't expect it to.
I don't give a shit about sailor moon, it's been over 15 years since I last watched it, and frankly being called a scrote for this is astoundingly retarded.

That’s why I couldn’t continue past the first chapter, they’re constantly encountering hyper realistic dangerous creatures and situations that are momentarily heart pounding and it has that vibe (although everything works out in a happy positive way the implication is unmistakably there, sorry.) these statements…i feel in a harem show all development seen is solely to benefit the waifufag viewer, so think transformations like a cold-hearted girl going from that to being loving and kind (but still sharp-tongued). that's not really the sort of development that interests me and that's mainly why i dropped it halfway into nise

I'm really not a "reeeee why don't they animate with celluloid sheets and acrylic paint anymore type" and expecting that stuff to come back is absolutely delusional, but I have noticed that a lot of anime is way overdependent on post editing and having an editor slap a billion effects on the animation instead of actually choosing colors that do the job. Even in actual painting it's a common technique to just block out the colors instead of blending them perfectly, so it really nags me for anime to have hard lineart and cell shading but be so dependent on digital gradient effects. Old anime also had ways to do gradients and make things shiny, but it didn't really abuse it as much as modern anime. Almost every time I see a Fate screenshot it looks kinda ugly to me because of this. Angel Beats too.

most of the monogatari girls become more psychotic as the show progresses. Aararagi is also more self aware than the average harem protagonist, to the point he rejects Hanekawa because he doesn't feel worthy of her. I also like senjougahara and her realationship with arararagi, i like her psychotic nature and it's fun when she bullied him and responds sarcastically to araragi. Its pretty retarded fun with good fights, and if you are a waifufag you will find at least one girl to root for. If you want strong feminist female characters then you are better off trying something else, prefeerably not animu.

The main girl spends the manga/anime screeching "darling" while chasing after a guy who is a genuine piece of shit. He flirts with every woman or girl he finds attractive, when they all generally hate him, gropes women, is entirely selfish, and the worst sort of tsundere, who is mostly tsun. I'd say she deserves better, but she's a retard for not immediately giving up on the scrote.

This is why moids love this show. It's the ultimate wish fulfilment for them. The guy gets to be a piece of shit, and even though he catches physical abuse for it, it's never serious and he recovers immediately. And the hottest girl in the series is in love with him. Only the aliens and weird shenanigans outside their "romance" is interesting.

Rumiko has a lot of the same issues with Ranma 1/2, but Ranma manages to be more likeable than Ataru, though that's not hard.

Rose of Versailles is pretty good and it's absolute classic shoujo. It follows a period of 20+ years since the arrival of 15-year-old Marie Antoinette in Versailles and Oscar (same age as her) becoming captain of her royal guard, until the French Revolution.
Some people don't like the beginning so much because it's mostly focused on MA having court drama while Oscar babysits her, but later on it develops and it explores the political tensions going on, and Oscar gradually realizing the plight of the people and the conflict between her allegiance to the royal family vs her empathy for the people.
Oscar's main schtick is that she was raised as a boy because her father needed an heir but only had daughters. Frankly, her inner conflict of femininity vs masculinity was kinda eh to me, but she's a really strong character, and popularized a whole archetype of beautiful androginous woman (bifauxnen). I also really love the way it explores MA. She starts as a naive fifteen year old that doesn't know how to navigate the court drama and conspiracies surrounding her, and you can see her grow to become resentful of her position.
The visuals are also gorgeous with a lot of dramatic shots where everything becomes red or blue for drama, and I loved the music as well.

This is something I've been discussing with my little sister. Older anime uses to not be afraid of being goofy and weird (in a good way), it was entertaining and it didn't take itself too seriously. Even when it was doing something stupid seriously, it was endearing. Nowadays anime seems to be infected by the same bug western shows suffer from, tryhard "maturity" and trying to be sooo serious and 3deep5u that it gets really annoying and boring. The worst part is all the attempts at being deep and serious are shallow anyways, because NEET ass manga writers don't have any real life experience to draw from for any form of deep and meaningful commentary. And idk why do they feel the need to comment on things anyways instead of writing entertaining stories. I also hate how they doubled down in porn stuff and all the troon characters in newer shows, and embracing netflix imo is what started all of this. Every anime made by or hosted on netflix from the recent years has annoying social commentary about what comes off as american issues so it feels weird in a Japanese cartoon. I also prefer the art style and direction of pre-2010s anime, I think the mega digitization of everything ruined anime, and I think hiring twitter tier artists to be animators is probably where the problem stems from, but I have no knowledge about the inner workings of the anime industry. I'm referring to all the filters and brushes with those "burn/overaly etc." effects that are so easy to spot out and looks weird.

Yes, yes, yes. This is so true, down to the parallel with western anime. Animation's idea of a deep storyline is 'guise… society is controlling us' with a drawing of black sheep surrounded by white sheep. Young NEET mangakas can ascend to genuinely interesting commentary, but it often hinges on their knowledge of other art forms or relies on confession-style manga. For some reason 2deep4u anime comes across as really derivative, like they're taking inspiration from a shitty photocopy of what was once clear and sharp.
The rest is extremely true aswell.

No. 398125

>>398115
Ayrt, and I doubt an anime writer/mangaka can ever write anything genuinely deep or interesting, even when they write about Japanese society specifically. Because at the end of the day they're actually spoiled rich privileged people, which is how they could easily live as NEETs thanks to mama and papa's money, and get in the industry of their dreams of animation or manga. It's actually a bit condescending to me when I watch something trying to be so deep with the struggles of the characters but they all have it so much better than me and their problems are so petty. It's one of the many reasons why I actually hate evangilon. Only Asuka had somewhat serious issues, the rest were such insufferable crybabies. Wah wah guy not date me wah wah dad no love me wah wah I'm a scientist but also a woman or whatever. It's so insulting that I'm supposed to relate and sympathize with those spoiled ass characters, same applies to majority of anime like that. Someone will probably hate me for this but it's why I stick to shounen and shounen turned seinen kind of stuff, because at least the characters' struggles involve wars and genocide or some crazy shit like that. Slice of life and stories about adult characters aren't necessarily bad, but they're always written with the worst kind of characters possible and their stories are just so boring and impossible to sympathize with because of how pathetic they are.
>'guise…society is controlling us'
You're so right about this kek, it's like the only epiphany they can ever reach lmao. They never dare to actually criticize and go against their societal norms because it won't sell and won't make it past the editing team lol. I think the same can apply to western shows, too. Both can only make what is approved by society at the end of the day, or else they'll lose their jobs.

I love Komugi, she's a perfect example of excellent jp chara design
>instead of copying street fashion and shein
I'd love it if they integrated it seamlessly but yes, they just take insta trend #35 and make an overcrowded design out of it. I feel like older chara designers actually observed historical or contemporary fashion closely, not copying it but catching its spirit to then play with it, adding a little or a lot of whimsy. The end product feels like it has a life of its own, it felt like the character's look (ignoring clothes) matched what they wore and the general world they were in. I wonder how much of this is to accomodate cosplayers, i notice anime-inspired licenses like Genshin care way too much about being cosplayer-friendly, which produces extremely insipid characters. The style of older anime itself (its lineart, etc) probably helped a lot too

do any nonnies pretty much exclusively watch dubs? Ive only recently gotten back into anime after like 6+ years of barely watching anything and I just cant stand subs anymore. I hate having to read instead of being able to 100% focus on the pretty animation and japanese just sounds so fuckin annoying, and I'm saying this as someone who watched hundreds of subbed anime between the ages of 12-15 or so. Rewatching old shows Im now watching them dubbed, and 99% of dubs are actually perfectly fine, good even, and any new shows that peak my interest if they dont have a dub I either go straight for the manga or pass over. I think 13 year old edgy sub elitist weeb me would vomit seeing me now but I just dont care.

This. She mentions in the novel the anime is based on that she becomes more indoctrinated as years go by and looking back on it she's ashamed over how messed up things in their society was, but it was so normalized she didn't question it at the time. I recommend reading the novel, it is definitely way more sexualized that the anime but reading Saki's thoughts in more depth and more details on how the brainwashing works gives you a better understanding of the anime.

Old reply. I mostly watch things subbed but the '05-'12 era had some good dubs. Anything that ended up on Adult Swim or Toonami was generally really good. Once streaming took off it feels like a box ticking exercise so they got the cheapest people possible. Idk, if it was just me being young but Death Note, FMA:BH and Gurren Lagann just sound good to me dubbed. It's also weird when they get the occasional celebrity in like Samuel L Jackson in Afro Samurai. You'll get the odd solid dub now mostly Netflix if they want to promote it. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is way better in English but I don't speak Japanese so I wouldn't even really know if it sounded bad in that. Anyway train of thought post.

Like FMA03 or HxH1999 were afraid of being seen as goofy and added a lot of anime original edgy shit just to be seen as dark and gritty. To the point that FMA03 directly added a parallel world with Nazi Germany and spelling out "wow all characters are nazis!" as if it was too subtle in the original with them causing genocide and their leader being called fuehrer.

The Netflix sub for Dungeon Meshi is often borderline nonsensical and they accidentally a word constantly.
I've been watching the anime adaptation of Dead Dead Demon's De De De De Destruction, and the "subs" are just closed captions for the over-localized English dub. The anime is already adapted somehwta poorly imo. Most scenes are paced and staged somewhat poorly because the anime director didn't fill in the gaps in time and space that are normal to leave out in a manga. The poor "translation" just makes following the anime 20x harder.
I checked out the first chapter of the manga, and even though it's really obvious just from watching the anime that the manga would be better, I was shocked at how much more comprehensible it was.

I am not a Japanese history buff so more knowledgeable anons feel free to correct me, but it's a historical fiction following Hojo Tokiyuki, who was a real figure in the Kamakura period, going against and getting revenge from the Ashikaga (basically the actual MC of that time period IRL) after his clan, the Hojo, who were ruling at the time are slaughtered. Stupid question but how well do you remember the series you watched? I went through my watched list and realized, while I remember the overall plot of every (or almost every…) show I watched, it's hard to conjure any specific plot points. I feel like it's especially bad with series I binged instead of watched weekly or monthly. If I sit down and really think about it for a few minutes, a lot of times some specific scenes come back to me, but I don't think I could tell you what led up to it. It doesn't seem to matter when I watched the show, either–I remember some anime I watched six years ago better than some I watched last year, but that might be related to binging vs weekly again.
Strangely it's the other way round for me for manga. I couldn't tell you what happened in the chapter last month or before that, but if you asked me when character X got introduced in that one series I read at once in a school night ten years ago, I could tell you it happened somewhere around volume four, after character Y got its own arc lol.
It's gotten to the point I'm starting to think about keeping something akin to a journal, where I try to write at least one bulletpoint on what happened in each episode I watched lol.

No. 404326

>>404313
I have the same problem with anime lmao. Except when it's one I hate, then I remember every detail against my own will. My strategy is to watch an anime that has a manga, then after a while go and read the manga. So the manga would be a fresh and new experience to me, but it will also solidify the events in my memory. But if I read a manga only without anime, I still remember the details, I also remember the details with anime that is a bit slow paced and little happens in each episode but still progresses the plot even if it's a long anime. Or when an event drags on for multiple episodes. But when it's really long and the story has different arcs, then my old timer's disease hits me. I noticed this with Bleach. I binge watched it back in 2019 along with Monster, Evangelion and Slam Dunk. I remember Eva because I hated it, I remember monster because it was slow based and because I reread the manga years later, but for Bleach and Slam Dunk, they both have that "break points" where some big events happens then some big thing happens then some other big thing happens, for Bleach it's all the fights, while for Slam Dunk it's all the basketball matches. But the character related events are easy for me to recall. Jojo is the only long series I binge watched and remember everything of because it was too crazy to forget and I'm autistic about the details, as well as the "break points" being more smoothly connected narrative wise, so I remember them because they link to each other, unlike regular anime arcs like in Bleach (despite the arcs somewhat being connected, but not strong enough for me to remember their relevance to each other. )

Until I saw the movie I thought of their relationship as familial love rather than romantic, so watch it from that POV. The character in your picture is the only actual fanservice character in the show. Everyone else look pretty normal as far as anime goes.
It depends on what kind of shows you like, I absolutely loved the entire thing despite it's flaws (probably because I saw it from the previously mentioned POV). It's kind of slow at the start because they focus a lot on Violet and the world building but after that it becomes more contained stories about the people she meet, I recommend you skip over the one about the prince and princess though.

I agree with you, but with comedy anime and manga in general, not just isekai parodies. Everytime I started a comedy manga or anime that didn't have a long plot with some funny scenes here and there I got bored fast because the first jokes are funny and then it gets very repetitive. It's just way more obvious with isekai series because they rely on the audience's knowledge on a specific genre as a crutch to somewhat work.

>start heartcatch precure
>really enjoying it
>suddenly picrel where the 14 year old girl protagonist hides her fairy things in her chest and gives the impression of giant boobs (even if nothing is explicity stated)
>this lasts for two minutes
I don't care too much about fanservicey jokes even if I dislike it but there's something very sinister about an anime aimed at preteen girls having this kinda joke. Once again it's not explicit and people online don't consider it fanservice since it's innocent but the team working on it is compromised of mostly adult men, we all know their intent. Maybe it's because I got a bit burnt out from all the disappointment I felt with the Sailor Moon remake, but I feel like animation studios today are so busy with pumping shit out they forget the point of metaphors and symbolism. Like at the end of the Sailor Moon manga where Moon got her wings burnt off by golems she is supposed to face Galaxia without her wings, which Galaxia even comments on ("So you lost your wings"), and she then gets her wings back when she in the middle of all her loss finds her will to face evil again. It's babby's first symbolism. But in the remake she suddenly has her wings back again when she faces Galaxia, DESPITE GALAXIA STILL POINTING OUT HER SUPPOSED LOSS OF WINGS, just so they could make a cool fighting scene of her flying around the temple.

The color choices are also kinda weird? Like the color combination made him look more grounded (mainly softer tones with splashes of bright colors in the reds, blues and yellow) in the original and the movie is giving Vtuber color combo vibes. I'm over analyzing I know but I really like the character designs in Mononoke and no, these differences are not that deep or gonna make me not see the movie.

Watched the first 3 episode of Ranma ½ 2024 and re-watched the first 3 episode of the original.
The 2024 doesn't show nipples and has 50% less bare naked breast shots, a little quicker paste and the fight scenes are more intense than the original.
But I 100% prefer the coloring of the original with it saturated colors, especially female Ranma with her trademark crimson red hair color was always an eye catcher, which the new version doesn't have.
If you're a sucker for 80s Anime aesthetics and coloring, design and beautiful backgrounds, the original is better than the 2024 version.
The new version also doesn't add anything new, it's the 80's Anime just in a modern style and coloring.

I'm glad they're letting mangaka finish their series whenever they want nowadays instead of forcing them to shit out 70 volumes that make their stories way worse. It has a low score, but I found it decent enough and the art looked sometimes cool. I feel that weebs are sometimes a bit retarded about OVAs and cannot get it into their heads that a lot of OVAs are just ads for the manga, so they get really mad about the plot not making 100% sense and clearly lacking information. I watch old OVAs based on vibes so it doesn't bother me that much
>Satsujin Kippu wa Heart-iro
I remember it being mediocre
>Sweet Spot
Didn't care about it

made a collage of some of the shows I've been watching as of late and my impressions of them so far. In no particular order

1. My Deer Friend Noko-tan: 5.5/10. Nice weekly dose of brainrot but the comedy sometimes is a hit or a miss.

2. Mayonaka Punch 7/10. Underrated gem of the season. A canceled YouTuber homes in with vampire girls to get their channel to 1mill subs and one of them gets to suck her blood dry in return. Main girl is an asshole but she's a lovable asshole. I love all the vampire girls and their personalities and how the show portrays being a content creator. It's super fun and even had a few episodes that pull at your heart strings. I don't even care if it's possible yuribait. I can't wait to see how it goes on.

3. The Elusive Samurai: 7.5/10. One of the rare times I actually enjoy watching a shounen anime, nonetheless a historical retelling. Not a major fan of the genre in general mostly due to dumb powerscaling but this one doesn't seem to be going in the direction if a battle shounen. Beautifully animated, has likable characters and Tokiyuki is adorable. I might be up to reading the manga once the anime is over.

4. Delico's Nursery: ?/10. Only 3 episodes so far so it may be a bit too early to be completely judging it, but I see failmail ikemen vampire dads taking care of their kids with pretty art and that alone was enough to get me into it. I'm not that super invested in the murder mystery part of the story but maybe that might change in future episodes who knows.

5. Senpai is an Otokonoko: 6.5/10. I'm going into this as someone who hasn't really read the webcomic, only seen bits of panels on the web. I'm liking it so far and like how it mixes the drama with the light and comedic moments. Makoto is a sweetheart but incredibly dense at times. I know the show is mainly focused on him being a crossdressing boy and the budding romance between his childhood friend vs girl who confessed to him assuming he was a girl at first, but the way it kinda flip flops at times with alluding he might troon out is a bit of a turn off for me. It isn't to heavily focused for me to drop the show though. He firmly considers himself a boy who just likes cute things, but there were moments where he questions if he wants to be a girl or questions if he's neither a boy or a girl. I really do hope he just stays a non-conforming boy through the end. I rarely ever see otokonoko being the main of the story in a serious manner. Theyre usally just side charcters for fanservice in most shows. Just someone get it through his head it's not wrong to be a boy who likes being feminine. I avoid discussions on this one on socmed because of TiMs enforcing their headcanons onto him. Even outright refusing to call him "he" and use "she" or "they" pronouns when talking about him despite that everyone in the show calls him by male prounouns even when he's crossdressed. But anyways. I like the show, just cautious on how it'll end. (Hopefully with him and his male childhood friend as the endgame couple seeing the latest episode). that's my fujo self fulfillment.

I WANT to like this show so bad, I really like the black haired main and the two of them are prime shipping material. I also enjoy murder mysteries so this could have been something I really enjoyed… but I just can't handle mangas/animes where they do it like Conan and have one character pose as the genius detective while the one actually solving the mystery stands in the background. I just can't get into that trope. The only time was fine with it was in Nougami Neuro and that was because I liked the characters and the main mystery so much I didn't mind it.

Panty and Stocking was released in 2010 (and was probably in production since the late 2000's), right at the tail end of the 2000's edgy and random humor era. Especially in comedy anime during that period a handful a shows were mainly lot about pushing the envelope of how far you could take it before it became too sexual or offensive (see: Excel Saga, Ebichu, Detroit Metal City, Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan, et al.). I remember loving the show when it came out, but had I watched it for the first time now I would probably not enjoy it as much.

Japanese anime apply the same cliches/tropes to everything, its not just comedy. It is really infuriating to me. No matter how attractive the characters or inventive the idea for the story, the content feels hollow somehow, writing itself kills the ability to enjoy the show. I mean unless you are capable of turning off your brain and not noticing how repititve it all is. I tried watching P&S the other day and it made me want to ugly cry, how these creator's get so much FUNDING to inflict so much stilted garbage on us. ALL of that money and potential talent and they cannot write themselves out of an immitation to save their lives. I could rant about the things i hate in anime for days. Why do they bother? Don't get me wrong i like the art style sometimes, but when the characters start talking and i have to turn it off its so hard to take seriously. Kind of makes me sad because as a child i liked anime. I can never go back to being that naive i guess.

I still like certain things about anime. I like dark anime from the 80s and 90s. When it didn't take itself so seriously. It NEVER used to take itself seriously. That was what kind of made it charming. But that kind of thing isn't made anymore. Anime seems to get off way too much on its own hype when its just grating cute loli repitition shoved in your face. Like how the hell is anybody taking this 900th series about loli elvin assmagic seriously ??

They could use the money to make imitation loli to fund the cure for some disease and they just dont.

Watching an OVA from the 80's and then something newer is such a whiplash. I've been really enjoying Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai this season, I feel like it's been really slept on because it has a lot of filters.
Light novel series that takes place in court, doesn't help that the anime chose an artstyle that seems cheap compared to the shoujo style fo the manga adaption.
I'm planning on reading the novels at one point, there's some really neat worldbuilding that the anime scrapes the surface of.

I should have elaborated. My issue with otaku culture is the consumerism related to it, for example you see more shows featuring cute girls aimed towards male fans rather than women because otakus moids are more likely to buy merch featuring their waifu flavor of the week, so it's easier to pick up shows that might get popular enough so they can pump out figurines and shit.
I love old animes, but I also love a lot of newer ones too, but the catering to moid otakus and their money is a bit extra obvious than others. Not saying old shows didn't have fanservice too, of course. It's more about about the way shit is catered, the lack of shows featuring solo female mains that isn't related solely to the male gaze is prelivalent imo which is also why the Rose of Versailles remake rubs me kinda the wrong way despite the fact I also really look forward to it - I would have loved to see that budget spent on something NEW for women featuring strong, independent female characters. Sure, the remake is going to introduce the franchise to newer fans but it's just that; a remake of a story already told.

A Wet Moon movie would be very cool. It was actually made to be adapted into a French movie but the producers ended up falling through. Because of that, it's the perfect length for a movie, without adding or subtracting anything. It basically be a David Lynch anime.

Does anyone else watch anime YouTubers?
I really got into old manga/anime thanks to binging Katsuhiro Otomo's body of work like a year ago but have found it hard to dig up esoteric pieces of that era. Sometimes I just want something off the beaten path. Like I love Akira and Perfect Blue, but some days I wanna watch stuff like Fukuyama no Gekijo too. So anime YouTubers right?
But every anime YouTuber I come across either recommends the three big pieces that everyone who looks into the era has heard in passing, or include things like hentai because it was "a big influence on how anime is now". Why? I think even just a casual viewer of anime is aware of how much pornbrain shit permeates the genre, so including it for historical context just feels like a copout to talk about your favorite jerk off material (another thing I've noticed is the genre is filled with scrotes and TiMs).
I mean I realize I have to do my own digging now, but I was curious if any other Nonna's noticed this. Especially with like the uptick in popularity because of "old anime aesthetic".

I didn't mean convincing people to watch, but convincing to stop shitting on. Isekai is copy-paste slop and has very few appealing factors for a female audience. Maybe something like the mild fujobait in SAO but even then it's crumbs. Also imo neither escaflowne or rayearth are isekai in the modern sense of the term.

Why would someone want to watch most isekaishit that isn't those two? Escaflowne and Rayearth were actually good and they came out a long time ago before isekai became the watered down garbage it is now.
A good part of isekaishit that's been coming out for the past decade or so has been copypaste ecchi haremshit for moids with the most generic-ass plots ever (sometimes edgier than usual through the typical shitty combo of sex+gore). Even most isekai for women coming out right now is based on the same overused copy-paste premise of "isekai otome villainess" that's just a huge game of telephone going back to the first light novel that actually parodied otome games, so the more copies of this original parody released, the shittier this sub-genre gets. It's all "slop".

Some recent isekai are actually good and deserve attention, like Ascendance of a Bookworm, most of which are, coincidentally, created by and/or for women. But compared to the shitty kind of isekai, these are rare.

Because The 12 Kingdoms also exist. Give it a try. Or pirate the novels and give them a try, they're pretty good. If an older isekai story is targeting a female audience like this one, Escaflowne and Magic Knight Rayearth it'll be better than today's garbage by default.

No. 420619

Yeah, well, that's why I said "most". I know there are isekai anime aside from those two that are good, but my point is that they're rare. In fact, you could include 12 Kingdoms along with Escaflowne and Rayearth, we're probably missing a couple more.

Been considering doing the same, simply for the sense of accomplishment as a weeb kek but I've heard the VN(s?) are great but they have a lot of sex for it, apparently at the time the only way to get your VNs published or as much as noticed you more or less had to go for the porn angle. But maybe there are modded versions out there? Either way, the original fate VN is supposedly several hours long with varying routes so it's kinda up to how much time you want to spend on it.
Honestly I wish there was a way to read popular VNs on your phone because it's such a hassle to read them on the computer (looking at you higurashi). Would make getting into franchises like fate ten times easier if you could just bring them with you and read whenever.

For the anime, you don't have to watch any of the lolishit, those are spin offs if you're talking about Fate kaleid or whatever it's called, you can just watch the og F/SN anime, the UBW anime and the Heaven's Feel movies, Fate/Zero (probably the easiest to get into for a newcomer, and it's a prequel to F/SN), the cooking spinoff show, etc.
