what do you people think of tomfoxdraws? i read his book lately and i found it really interesting. i always appreciate a drawing book that doesn't oversexualise female bodies as well, aka have them in some sensual pose for every single picture. i find it a little refreshing that he draws very 'real' looking people.

Leyendecker IS very good and so I won’t hold it against the nonas here for liking him but he also acts as a signpost to all the TIFs of the internet who think they’re doing something innovative and interesting by replicating one of his covers with their latest yaoi ship. As someone who’s deeply into art history, I promise you all that there are a plethora of other artists who produce works of similar visual appeal, but no one who goes to Pinterest for artistic reference will ever open a book on early Baroque or Neoclassical masters.

It's so fucking dumb, it's not like that art/media/whatever was made with mentally ill self-hating girls who want to be men in mind. Besides, TIFs are female, so if a lot of them liked it, it's likely because it just appeals to women in general, or women with certain interests.
>no one who goes to Pinterest for artistic reference will ever open a book on early Baroque or Neoclassical masters.I love both Leyendecker's art and Baroque/Renaissance art. I'm sure I'm not the only one who likes both popular artists and the work of the old masters. Women like Leyendecker specifically because he made the males in his art look hot and his stylization is aesthetically pleasing.
>>2227426I also like this painting and hate that it became a popular meme, but can't you just pretend those people don't exist? Unless you spend a lot of time on Twitter, it's pretty easy to mentally block them. If you talk about the painting online, don't even acknowledge them, and instead make them feel like retards for even bringing it up. I feel if a lot of people did this, they'd stop being so annoying, they need to be bullied into shutting up. You can tell the Loomis disease trails in that art style and they always overuse that same textured brushes, I get you it’s absolutely hideous and reduces every artists’ originality into boxy sludge. I’ve noticed this has started infecting modern video game design as well. A loomisfag plays with art like how an autist obsessively tweaks with computers, they absolutely forget that art is about individual flair not repeatedly applying the same problem and never finding creative solutions to them. Some artists have books written about them that were published by art galleries or journals, and you can use libraries to find borrowable copies. Yale University Art Gallery and NMAI have fairly large collections of American illustration art, the NMAI site has a big artist list if you just want to use it as reference to look up the illustrators
https://americanillustration.org/artists/For example it lists Edwin Austin Abbey, while NMAI doesn't have a link for his works his wife donated nearly all of his art to the Yale Univeristy Art Gallery, so if you go on YUAG's website or Artvee you can browse his work. I used my library to find a book written about him but unfortunately there was only one major publication about his art (and the book Yale just published for their current exhibit).
I'd also suggest downloading/looking at the Watson Guptill book Drawing With Pen and Ink and the Famous Artist's Course because they both have a lot of illustrations cited to artists who were popular during the time period these books were published.

Can any anon with a moderate to large following give some advice on how to grow? I make art dolls and felt art and my instagram account has been inactive for about a year and some. I am only just getting back into it, I have a little over 800 followers, but my most recent post only has 5 likes after 14 hours. Instagram has changed a lot since I last used it, when you search you can't sort by newest post anymore, which is how I used to find other small accounts to interact with and boost each other. Is instagram even still the way to go? Should I start using tiktok for my dolls? Any resources you could offer on how to optimize my posting and my content would be so helpful, I feel totally overwhelmed when I just search this stuff online I would rather just get some advice from an actual human being in the space.

Like switch the colors around for an alt version, draw over it to turn it into a seasonal drawing for halloween, xmas, valentines etc… the older the drawing is the better, as newer followers likely haven't seen it anyway.
When you do an alt version it helps knowing your audience. My girly girl friends will like anything that is pink kek and goth friends love anything black.
Insta has been pretty shit lately tbh I miss the "latest" function too. I wish I could view my art through the lens of someone who doesn't draw, or even someone who is still learning their fundies. I've improved a lot since 2022, I put a lot of work into learning perspective, learning better anatomy and different styles of rendering, and I actively made the choice to do so when I was trying to draw charms to sell and realized all of it looked like shit. I'm really proud of how far I've come, I hardly experience any genuine frustration or difficulty drawing now, but the trade off is that I can't enjoy other people's art as much anymore because whenever I look at the art of others, all I see are their mistakes. Work I used to view as absolutely godlike now appears awkward to me, there are very few artists I used to hold in high regard that haven't been affected by my brain in this way. This probably comes off as a humble brag, but I'm someone who learned to draw strictly because the medium of anime brought me joy in a life that was dull at best and downright horrific at worst. I wanted to be able to create the things I loved, and now I can, but it's at the cost of my enjoyment of said things being lowered a bit. I still love anime and get that autistic nerdy joy when I do find something that piques my interest, and there are still artists that remain untouched by this development, which continues to motivate me to keep improving to see if I can get on their level but I keep finding myself wishing I could still see my old idol's art in the way I used to, and that thought makes me wonder if anyone views my art the same way I viewed these people's art. Sounds kinda narcissistic but whatever.

Think drawing has become dull? Sculpt. Follow sculptors work. Try out mixed medium. Write poems. Try drawing or sculpting while blindfolded. Dabble in pottery. Try other mediums and new things, and bring some color back to your life. I don't think your problem is what you think it is, you're just not looking at art in the right way. Find joy in creating and you could find all sorts of possibilities in the works you think are uninspiring right now. Also just look at drawings and paintings that are out of the ordinary of what you usually look at.

>>2234376It's not that drawing has become dull, I have more fun than ever actually drawing now that I can draw basically anything I want without that feeling of frustration welling up in my chest when something is too difficult for my present level of skill, it's that I'm disappointed I've become unable to enjoy the art of OTHER people as much when I'm a giga anime art autist. The thing that spurred that post on is that I went to go reread the Genshin webtoon as I really adored the way they drew it and I wanted to make a comic similarly drawn to it, in particular I used the facial expressions as a basis when I decided I wanted to begin improving my art, but looking at it with my current eyes just made it look clunky and awkward, in comparison to how much fun I had going through it and wanting that art style to be mine back in 2022.
Not to say I don't want to broaden my horizons though, now that I can draw a lot faster I want to learn animation.

In order to achieve this piece, what are the building blocks you need to learn? A specific body type? The texture of a certain fabric? A skin colour under particular lighting? Ask yourself these questions and practice each little part individually, which should take you 1-2 hours each to master. At the end, pull all of your knowledge together and go for the actual piece. I find this the best way of getting myself back into practice when I’ve been out of art juice for a while: because it’s hard to regain a sense of direction and purpose after a break, just assign yourself a piece to make and work backwards. Has anyone noticed the sudden boom in huge watermarks on the JP side in the past ~3 days? From people using them, to posting free designs and even opening comisions for custom watermarks.
I wonder if they made them in response to Twitter's new AI rules that will be implemented next week. I feel japanese people in general are too naive, as if that would stop AI scrapers or reposters.
The other day I saw someone genuely asking "Why would someone repost the art [to sites like Dambooru] when the artist said it's forbiden? That's illegal/mean", but I'm glad at least their watermarks are so pretty kek. I wish people could respect artists more though.
I also saw some of them start posting on this site named Xfolio (not related to Twitter despite the name) but it's hard-ish to navigate and "only" for complete works as it's aimed to be a porfolio and indie marketplace, kind of like Pixiv+Booth. I wonder if/where those artists will move to, I hope they still use Popiku at least for doodles and such.

Coming from the bad art thread where someone mentioned a vtuber who traces 3D models inspired me to come here and ask everyone what you think about using them in your workflow?
I've noticed a lot of professionals use them too, but they tend to just use a mostly featureless model to compose a scene and then loosely sketch over it for the base before then drawing over that on another layer. This is what I've been doing and my art certainly does look better now than it used to, but I'll be honest I feel like my raw skill degraded in hand, where I'm worse at constructing a figure from scratch. This is mostly a holdover from when my PC used to be so crap that when I'd make a bruish stroke it would delay by a couple seconds, so back then it was the only way to get an accurate body because I had a template/point of reference, but now I'll admit it may be more like a crutch I'm used to.
Another anon mentioned in the bad art thread that it's like sugary treats or something, and once artists try them they can't stop using them. I definitely relate to that sentiment. I love pumping out multiple pieces at once then working on them whenever it strikes me, so this has definitely made that part much much easier and has made it hard for me to quit them. I suppose if I feel like it's stifling me I should start using them as more of a reference on a seperate canvas rather than a layer with low opacity, but I'd be lying if the speed the latter grants me wasn't an appealing vice.
No. 2237409
>>2237385Yeah I feel they're 0 or 100 sometimes, they either over-rely on people's kindness to be normal or delete their entire gallery/account the second they get something they dislike.
I follow this one KR artist whose art keeps getting reposted over twitter (as kind of reaction image, but moreso just for attention ie "I love this ship [drawing of the ship]" when talking to someone) and she just goes "Please don't repost my art, I never delete anything so enjoy it from my gallery :)" and that's sweet but I feel so bad for her.
On my side, I mostly got people privating their accounts and returning to post art on Pixiv logs and/or moving to Blusky (surprised this plataform move is actually kind of working).
>>2237395Honestly? You do what you do. I think tracing them too much (like that girl from the bad art thread you mentioned) is lazy, but if all you want is to make art for fun without caring on actually learning, it's fine. Tracing and referencing from real-life poses instead of models is better though, you have a hight change the pose will look stiff or unatural with the later.
If you want to actually learn to draw, it's better to use them as little as posible, as you mentioned professional artists use them for cruch since they need to pop out so many commissions and profesional work in little time.
No. 2237428
>>2237395I use models of my characters to block out difficult compositions or angles, especially if I can't be bothered just hashing it out on my own (sometimes you want a quick-yet-overzealous mech pose, y'know?). I also use physical models and maquettes for reference, and it's basically the same thing, especially if I take a photo of it to use as a main ref kek. I don't think there's any harm in it, but yeah I would suggest using 3D models more as a reference image than drawing over the top of them, then do a pass with the ref under your work to check for accuracy if you absolutely must.
imo one of the problems with using 3D models, especially of organic elements like a human figure, is that many artists don't know how to exaggerate and 'break' a model to fit their needs, so it can look flat and stiff in a way that it wouldn't if you got, say, someone familiar with animation or 3D character art to pose it. You also shouldn't use 3D for poses like your picrel, for example, just look up photo reference instead (or better yet, take a photo of yourself in the pose you're after– once you know anatomy and forms well enough, you can use any body in a pose without issue)

Plus the models while showing form, can't properly express the way the body flexes because it's not a human body. If if you feel like you're becoming too dependent on them, you could get someone to help you take pictures of yourself modeling poses or get them to do it for you and work off of that. You'll be capturing real human forms and you'll have to work around simplifying it for your art. It could actually work as a learning exercise.

>>2238438I read that one semi-biographical Leyendecker book cover to cover and it was actually noted that he made an effort to convey African Americans with a level of dignity not commonly seen at the time. Sure, they’re put in objectively subservient roles, but that’s literally what black people were boxed into back then. It’s within these discriminatory boundaries that he adds a touch of humanity. Not worth sucking his dick over it or anything but to say his depictions were Racist with a capital R conveys a staggering level of ignorance to the relevant context. I’m black and I really like how he paints black people, if that counts for anything.

>>2238537that's not the issue. one of the main things is that the magazine he most commonly worked for (the saturday evening post) had strict rules stating that black people and other minority groups had to be portrayed in service roles. it was an extremely conservative magazine. in one of his biographies leyendecker even states that within the rules stated by the magazine he tried to portray black people as dignified as possible, which considering the time period (late 1890's-1900's) is something most big white american artists weren't willing to do. he drew them as respectfully as he possibly could considering his circumstances.
i'm not saying leyendecker is a saint, but calling him racist is extremely ignorant of the person he was, his values and the time period he lived in.

>>2238527 or pic attached). i can't seem to find anything but i also have memories of one his works showcasing a native american man on a horse, wearing traditional garb and all.
so, compared to his many works depicting white people, his work containing black people and native americans does showcase them in a less favorable light. but honestly in my view it doesn't show them in any way that feels aggressive or offensive. if anything it feels like that rather than diminish those minorities, leyendecker simply elevated his white characters because they were the target audience of his magazine. his art of black people and natives looks honestly just natural, their skintones are painted very competently and looks warm and well rendered, they're given mostly delightful, jolly and relaxed expressions (or in cases such as the native american man on a horse, pensive and dignified). they don't look like aggressive caricatures meant to offend, they just look like people. they don't look like leyendecker's peak fancy white man soldier in sharp suit (who's almost a pinup in my eyes), they just look like people working.

They're amazing shortcuts when you're learning proportions, composition, poses, perspective etc. because they make things so much more simple, but when you trace over a 3D scene it becomes too clinical, too perfect, just lacking of depth that you have to bring in to the image by twisting certain things. An illustration isn't photography, so simply replicating physical reality doesn't always work.
That said, I have nothing against people using them and skilled artists can include them in their workflow without stunting their personal growth. They're especially useful for drawing complex objects that you have a hard time figuring out too.

I've been following her on/off just to hear the dumb things she says since I used to watch her videos on YouTube back in the day. In her last video about art style, she mentioned how she's trying to include more props in her illustrations and that's all fine and well but I really don't see much of a difference in the quality of her character design themselves as they still have the deviantart derp faces. It's ironic that she mentioned how someone joked that the reason why she has a cyclops character is so she doesn't have tk draw two eyes because I feel like deep down there is truth to this considering the eye way she draws regular eyed characters, they always tend to look weird, especially with her incessant need to overly render them which emphasizes the weirdness even more.

I sometimes look at her twitch streams and she uses the symmetry tool whenever she's drawing eyes, heck she even uses it when drawimg the mouth facing front soemtimes. I think that she's so focused on making her style look so spooky and unique that she doesn't realize how her style just doesn't deliver that vibe because of her weak anatomy. This is why it's so funny how she thinks overhauling her shading/coloring will make her aer stand out in a unique way, espwcially since her friends encourage her when as insufferable as most of her friends are because ethey ate troops, their art does look more appealing then hers. And she says she doesn't have time to practice anatomy but she does, she just needs to stop worrying about her coloring and inking for a bit and focus on anatomy. It is just so noticeable, especially when she does fanart. Picrel, she charges 15 USD for these… I'm all for interpreting fanart in yoyr own style and Helluva Boss characters can translate well with creative difference but how can she not see how janky these depictions look? Blitz is the only one who looks somewhat decent but with quality like this, I can't say I'm surprised that she has shaky experiences when selling at cons.
Even I'm the con video, she mentioned that she was able to make her table and travel back because she shared a table with two friends, what would've happened if she was working solo? It probably would've been a disaster.

And the way she writes it as a vague "violence of the occupation" instead of a specific event? The concept itself is definitely weird and kind of insensitive, but if she wrote the backstory like someone that actually knew their shit/put bizzarre ammounts of tought into it I would almost have to respect the sheer autism of making a tone deaf OC for her middle eastern history special interest.

Sorry to keeping bring up the artist that made those Palestine Occupation OCs, but given that she also makes them flavors of queer alongside that (blue OC is a bisexual TIM, hijabi OC is a lesbian she/they), I think she also counts and is a good example of what I am trying to say. I feel like a lot of virtue signaling woke artists focus on shoving as much diversity into their 200 OCs as possible, but can't put in the effort or research to actually delve deeper into those characters' stories and experiences. I don't count Toyhouse infodumps as storytelling and characters just standing there as representation, but these sorts of artists love to pat each other on the back for bare minimums. I find it disappointing that these people don't try to showcase different cultures in an actual story and would respect them more if they tried, but I consider their lack of effort a good thing when it comes to trans or genderspecial OCs because I could not handle having even more of that dumb, pretentious shit shoved in my face.

But first be honest with yourself and admit if it's really your idea, or if it's inspired by a poplar trend you saw. Secondly make sure you're really really sure they're copying you specifically. I've seen too many "call outs" where a small artist is super upset over being copied… when in reality it's barely anything like their work and it was trending at that time. If I was your friend I'd help you analyze it in private to make sure you'd have a case or not, but I understand if you don't wanna post yourself on lc. So if you have friends, tell ALL of them and ask what they think.
If you have enough proof and a friend is willing, they could do the call out posts for you. That gives you some distance and lets you just be the
victim. And if everyone turns against you it's easier for the friend to go "whatever, it's not my art anyway" and for you to act like you weren't involved with the call out and that you've talked to your friend about it now to make them stop. That will make people leave both of you alone. But your friend would have to be ok with pretending to be the only person making the call out beforehand.
If it turns out your proof is too weak even though they're copying your ideas, like maybe their drawings are just too different than yours… you can still start vague tweeting about them. Like when you post you can add things like "watch CERTAIN BIG CREATORS post this thing in a few days too winkyface", posts about how it sucks when big people copy you without credit. Let them know you see them copy you, and your own followers will get nosy about who it is. You can even offer to tell anyone who DMs you who the copy is with the proof.
Another route is go to the copycats pics, and every time they post a copy you reply/comment "oh wow I posted exactly (insert what they copied) just 2 days ago, what a coincidence!". Maybe even link to yours. Every time. But with this tactic you act sweet and innocent. This gives them an escape to go "haha what a coincidence" and stop copying you on their own because they realize you're catching on to them.

victim who doesn't want to get their hands dirty) and set up a chain reaction where this same "friend" who took the fall for you will be compiling your own callout doc in a year or two's time, trust me. Starting with this specific incident, where you suddenly won't look like the
victim anymore. The best thing you can honestly do is to block the artist in question and try your best to forget about it and move on, copycats all have an identity crisis and if the object of their fixation doesn't give them attention they eventually get bored and start copying someone else. Also stop checking on what said artist is doing and stop caring that they get better numbers than you, social media numbers are fake anyway. Out of sight out of mind is a very powerful technique. I know it's unsettling but it's the same principle as having a stalker, they feed on any kind of attention you give them even negative attention, calling them out or shaming them doesn't work and will just drive them deeper into their obsession with you.

I don't even think it's satire.

>>2252726The traumacore text is discreet enough that it's mildly tolerable (if extremely cringy), and the soldier front and center connects to the idea of propaganda and focusing on the US gov hiding it's crimes or whatever. The huge Garfield head that only makes sense if you've spent a certain amount of time online is what makes it look like a shitpost, and the tryhard cryptic comments add it a flair of pretentiousness and turbo retardation and make it questionable why she wouldn't just add a comment explaining Abu Ghraib to spread awareness and make her political message actually work with her audience. Those two things seem to be what the quote tweet has a stronger issue with.
Spoiler because I don't mean to shit on that anon, but the meme Garfield head reminds me of that anon on the rate your art thread that was allergic to empty space so she slapped a bunch of random thematically related memes on top of the drawing and made the drawing look unnecessarily retarded>i hate her>you are not immune to propagandaWhat did she mean by that, though? Kek, she got so deep into the tryhard LARP that she accidentally defended the US army in a post that is supposed to be about Abu Ghraib being bad.
Unless she means that the commenter is attributing blame to a single person rather than the whole system, but that would be a weirdly profound point for such a retardedly executed idea and spergy copy paste response>>2252638I get your point and somewhat agree, but I don't think I've seen Palestine fanart slap in internet memes like this followed by the artist doing a bunch of schizo cryptic comments instead of giving context. Usually that type of Palestine fanart is done for "awareness" or to share some specific GFM. The cryptic LARP makes it look like a random attention whore stunt.
In any case, a lot of the Palestine fanart trends (especially/mostly the "here's my FotM blorbo eating watermelon" kind) were/are weirdly disconnected from any actual Palestinian artists
my tinfoil is that Palestinian artists willingly don't call the weird tone deaf stuff out because it's more effort than it's worth so they just let the westerners be retarded on their own. Notice how the person in the quote tweet is actually Iraqi.

>>2251697I don't think the labor laws in the USA will be much better. But it's insane how they cry about this instead of, idk, branching out? Learning new skills? Googling 'plushie manufacturers in my area' and going from there? I do understand that money's tight and cheap overseas labor makes a huge difference in their profits- but that's why they need to understand that conventions and Etsy are not meant to be full time jobs.
It's so dramatic. Boohoo, paper bookmarks and shitty laminated keychains! God forbid they pick up a screenprinting kit and make totes, or learn to sew a straight stitch on a secondhand machine and use free online patterns to make character plushes. Did resin stop existing? Are they too trans and disabled to use sticker paper and a printer? Is Cricut too inaccessible for the smooth brained con artist crowd? Fuck's sake.
This is going to be a fantastic way to cull the really shit artists. And I predict that resin will make a comeback in a big way, and Cricut will release a new machine that can cut thick acrylic for keychains and standees, there's going to be huge demand for that.

>>2253622>>2253713I'm really curious to see how this impacts art styles and themes actually. I can't see gendies selling their oversharing traumacore zines and eye-searing fanart to anyone outside their immediate friend group, and they won't have easy access to the same plastic tat to pad out their table with, so their sales will suffer. It's easy to make ugly art palatable by shrinking it into a charm and slapping glitter resin and holographic film on top, but now that's not an option. You don't need any sort of creativity to draw a smiling/winking FOTM chibi and slap it on a keychain. I foresee a return of smiling/winking kawaii food items and moeblob art, because it requires the same level of skill to create.
The porn ban could lead to a blessed reprieve from the Nemu-tier prints that have plagued AAs for years. I have no clue how many American print services operate out of America vs out of Chinese factories owned by the company, so that might drive up prices substantially even for cheap items like prints. If artists have to use local print places, and need to physically interact with another human to obtain their prints, I can also see that changing the sort of art that they make. I've seen so much blatant fetish art and softcore porn proudly displayed at AAs and labelled SFW that it's obvious that the artists have lost touch with reality, maybe that extra human interaction is what they need to relearn boundaries.
Who knows, maybe all this upheaval will lead some TIFs to draw decent, non-gendie, non-watermelon art of their yaoi husbandos, and the sudden uptick in sales will encourage them to stop competing for the Ugliest Art Of The Year award, and everyone will be happy because they won't be jumpscared by drooling hijabi zippertit acne Gojo in a trans flag strapon. I'll be happy if the tariffs stop the same FOTM tat being churned out and encourages artists to branch out into older series or original work, or at least makes them branch out into different types of merch.

On 1-time payments, they haven't gone anywhere. They just did a weird business decision and you can buy two different licenses: Perpetual (1-time payment, won't receive updates) and Subscription (montly/yearly payment, receives updates).
So you can just buy the perpetual 3.0, which includes all the updates from 1.11 to the initial 3.0.

>>2254271Unironically have separate accounts IF you're interested in selling commissions, I've spent hundreds on commissions but I never had patience for mixed bag accounts, it comes across as disrespectful to the potential customer who is expected to just put up with anything because they're just a follower. Consider each account a "brand" that specialises in one genre because put it this way: if you sold cars would you put vintage cars on the same page as sports cars? Or would you create a new page to sell vintage cars separate to sports cars so you steer your two audiences into the right lanes? Because sports car fanatics may look at vintage cars and think they're boring oldie trash that are not on par with their beloved sports cars, and vintage car enthusiasts may see sports cars as loud abominations built for retards who like to show off. People see art in the same way. Even nonnas here hate all gendie art yet I've known of some gendies to rake in 3-5k a month on patreon after all the fees which unironically made me seethe kek.
However if you're not interested in selling commissions, just post what you want so it naturally drives away the wrong audience and attracts the right one. Lesbians who don't wanna see men and sex repulsed followers will live. Worst that can happen is you get blocked and complained about in a discord group chat.
An option is lightly introduce yourself in a new post and your bio like "Hi I'm So-and-so and I draw [interest #1, interest #2, and interest #3]" so followers know what they're signing up for and won't get any nasty surprises, and any followers with 2 brain cells who ask "will you draw XYZ?" won't be shocked or can't say you didn't warn them when you respond "no. check bio."
Also if you receive harassment, you can always just block them AND their followers, a method that worked for the JP and KR artists who got harassed by "american feelings mafia" anti/pro discourse accounts kek. Anyway hope you have fun on bsky nonna and make some nice friends.

>>2256863>>2256866>>2256870>>2256876Sorry for taking a while, I ended up writing a full essay of a length that neither nonas nor the site itself would appreciate so I had to reduce it quite a bit. Also genuinely surprised at how many anons were interested so I hope this lives up to exceptations. Disclaimer, I've gotten most of my knowledge from my schooling, which was focused more on conceptual/art theory critique and had a lot of focus on curating (teacher was a professional artist/curator prior) and my own brief experience submitting art to galleries and volunteering help setting up installations, I may be five or so years behind but looking at recent trends it seems like it's the same old same old.
What a curator decides to exhibit depends on the gallery; generally contemporary art is most popular, with modern art becoming slightly less popular over time and fine art is vastly less popular than it was fifty years ago. Illustration and sequential art are typically not considered real art and would only be exhibited in specific galleries. Internationally installations, sculpture and photography seem to be favoured over paintings, interactive art especially- whether that be a performance where the audience interacts with the subject or even just a big slide you can go down in, but again this varies depending on the gallery. Trends vary in certain countries and regions, for example in my country there's more of a bias towards Chinese and Aboriginal artists and environmentalists, which is fine as a lot of those groups create very interesting art but it would be retarded to ignore that bias. Trends are also dictated by critics, for better or worse.
At its core, a gallery is used to promote and sell an artist but the type of art and goals of a gallery are different in each type;
Commercial gallery
>artist and gallery in a financial agreement to sell artist's work in return for a commission >more accessible for public submission, often host competitions that allow art students and/or anyone to submitNon-profit/charity
>functionally the same as a commercial gallery, the money from sales just don't go to the artist or gallery and are run on donations Vanity gallery
>artists pay large sum and/or are invited by curator >gallery will still receive commissions in addition, however the sales of art are far higher>inaccessible to public submission Artist run gallery
>much smaller in scale>can be a toss up in terms of quality control >don't tend to do as well financially without industry influenceSome galleries act more like museums where they loan artwork to cycle through or they purchase it for permanent placement. These tend to be state or national galleries.
When submitting work to galleries, they generally want the following;
> the artwork fits into the gallery's size limits, depends on exhibit but generally it's a metre cubed max and about the weight "of a small child" (said to me more than once on several occasions, kek), sometimes frames are not allowed so make sure to check.> the artwork doesn't violate health and safety guidelines; organic products, bodily fluid, barbed wire/sharp metal, glass (depends on type of exhibit but generally not allowed), live ammo or shells, live electricity, etc. are all disallowed. > a sketch of how you would like the work set up is sometimes wanted, if for example you have a video overlay or sound system you'll also need to specify where to place those and any other requirements necessary, if you don't they will set it up however they want.> artist statement Cannot understate how important an artist statement is, it makes
the difference on whether your work will get selected. Often you'll see some very mediocre art being displayed and may assume nepotism and while that is more likely than not, that is not always the case and the artist just had a very strong statement. You could be the next Carvaggio and get turned down if your statement is weak, as the current climate leans more conceptual if you cannot write about your artist's practice and why you made the art you are basically considered a illustrator. What they want is a little about yourself, age, sex, race, cultural experience, and as fucked up as it talking about your trauma (if related to the work, don't randomly trauma dump) may increase your chance of selection. Being a part of any idpol or marginalised group can also boost chances in certain galleries. They'll also want to know what lead up to some of your decisions in your art making and sometimes they'll ask what artists inspired you. Putting illustrators down as inspiration is frowned upon, mentioning online artists may cause you to get turned down as they can't fully verify whether or not you have plagrised from said artists. For a good example of an artist statement I'd recommend Mark Ryden's, it doesn't need to be the same length as his but it has the general gist of how you should write.
As artists get more established they can forgo a gallery's guidelines, even the health and safety ones as long as the audience is unlikely to be directly harmed.
A exhibit is always based around a theme, typically contemporary issues (consumerism, media, war, gender, etc.) or cultural (people of X place) and reflects the gallery and curator's views and tastes. For the benefit and detriment of the artwork, a curator can override the artist on how they want it to be presented, they also control what information the audience receives and can posit their interpretation of the work (example: Francis Bacon and Van Gogh exhibits are very different depending on the curator and their opinions on the artists) Exhibits generally are cycled through a three to six month time period, exhibits featuring one artist tend to be far shorter and smaller galleries may only do one exhibit a year.

>>2257179Part two, Contemporary Art Sperging
Split these up so it's easier to read, and this is more discursive than informative. So, as said, contemporary art is the main type of art you'll see exhibited and advertised. Its name is misleading as it implies it is art made very recently when there's contemporary art that's almost a century old, in reality it's a movement that questions what could be considered as art and involves the audience in the art as they are just as, if not more, important as the artwork. Contemporary art has a lot of potential, many interesting ideas and practices have come from it, and there's some artists who I'd white knight to the death over but it is quite disliked and hated for a reason. My main issues with it lie in the postmodern nihilism and self wanking that is unfortunately inherent, two lines of thought in particular I find quite cancerous.
Death of the author is the first one, the fact its being used for fandom discourse is equal parts infuriating and funny as fuck. It doesn't mean "pretend the author isn't real so your headcanon is just as important as the source material and author's input doesn't matter", it's more the author has zero liberty of their work because the art or writing created itself and the author was a vessel for it and once it is complete it is its own entity (so your headcanon doesn't belong to you either) and only exists when perceived by someone, therefore its fine to plagiarise because no one owns anything (except for me, the person plagiarising of course, because I have to sell this.) This plagiarism manifests in contemporary artists replicating other's work 1:1 on a different scale or reprinting it exactly as is, Koons and Hirst are both notorious for this and, Koons especially, have gotten into legal trouble because of it. Appropriation is fine, Dadaism was all about appropriating and recontextualising, but there's a difference between that and straight up reprinting someone's photography and putting a different frame on it.
Originality is dead is the other, I'm sure everybody is familiar with this one and it may have caused some of you to spiral at least once. Also used to justify plagiarism, if that's a surprise to anyone. In simple terms the human condition is universal and we have existed for more than a millenia so everything has been thought and said. Sort of true but also not, everyone has a unique experience and set of inspiration, we don't even see the same colours. Originality is in the same muscle group as imagination, if you don't stretch it you become most online artists and if you do it incorrectly you become a tumblr artist, and you exercise it in the exact way you do imagination; cultivate experiences, opinions and interests, especially your non art related ones, and experiment and learn from your results.
In addition to plagiarism, it often is quite lazy. The concept of ready-made art (ordinary objects transformed into art) opens up a lot of possibilities and has been done successfully in a unique and well thought out way, but what the fuck is the point or appeal of a piece of slate on the floor or a screwed up piece of blank paper, besides getting your balls (men often do this baity pseudo deep fucktarded tripe) sucked by the critics? Speaking of those critics, their love for contemporary art has ruined a lot of art and media and maybe even society as a whole, they have such a deep contempt for art that isn't deep enough or protests against enough issues because all art is supposed to be political (except when you disagree with it, then it is not art) and if the average person doesn't understand it's because they're too stupid to understand a concept written by a obscure narcissistic 1960s French philosopher whose verbosity and lack of spacing and weird complexes rival Lovecraft. If you've ever had an argument with a TIM on tumblr it is the exact same thing and they've been acting like that for at least thirty years.
I hope I wasn't too autistic and you got something out of this. Happy to sperg anytime.

Not everything is "cancellation". Stop sucking old moid dick so hard, he was gay anyway kek. I might even get into gallery or artist v critic drama, old and new, if I can remember the more cowish ones.
>maybe it's just because it's local or artist ran, but I do see illustration style art and sometimes without an artist statementI think it depends on the gallery, one of my local ones is more old school with how they vet submissions (skill and effort over conceptual strength) and doesn't really want statements. Artist statements are also not always displayed to the audience, it's kind of like a resume for the gallery so they can decide if you're a good fit for what they're looking for.
Also, to clarify what I meant by illustration, I meant more art created for commercial purpose and/or without knowledge or implementation of art theory- which is just philosophy attributed to different art movements. The difference between illustration and art beyond that is very minimal if not nonexistent, it's a very wishy washy sort of categorisation, for example some people think Mark Ryden is an illustrator but Trevor Brown is an artist despite doing the exact same things, and Brown is also a pedo to boot.

This isn't going to work. All her gendie followers will continue calling Kate "he" to own the transphobes or whatever.

>>2258734I bet this kind of behaviour will be even more prevalent in the near future in western cartoon creators, especially indie ones. So many young artists grow up in an online tumblrite atmosphere of virtue signalling so intense it's almost competitive. In that sort of atmosphere any perceived wrongdoing is at risk of getting called out - or at least it feels like it, even if you don't make enough stuff to actually be noticed or remembered. If you have ever hung out with younger gendies, certain friend groups can even do 'microcancelling', and that shit can scar a kid.
Combine that constant anxiety of being seen as
problematic with a terrible habit of oversharing negative emotions and you've got a recipe for tons of milk to come. I am terribly excited.
Honestly, I have no idea how she's going to incorporate queerness into her show in the first place. Isn't her Jotaro OC (now named Alex) trans? She doesn't seem to obsess over his transness as much as Kate's queerness, but I think he's going to have to carry the tranny-pandering of the show if Kate is basically detrans.
Also, how do you tell the difference between a sapphic artist who is kinda coomery, vs a straight artist who is kinda coomery? I am confused about what Brujo Ari is and why she draws her female characters like that.

I am absolutely baffled how these artists can spend so much time on their art and not realize that 'Huh, this kinda sucks.' I also can't believe people pay money to see these characters get animated. I especially hate Hearts of Titan, because the main protagonists' colour palettes look absolutely horrendous together (although I also think they all look ugly except for the single girl. Also, purple guy is so obviously inspired by Galra Keith it makes me laugh) Isn't designing characters in relation to one another one of the most important things an artist should learn when it comes to character design? Props to them for designing such an obviously TIF character though lmao. Even in cartoons they can't pass.
I'm not familiar with the other two cartoons, but why does blue guy from the right look like he got his head squashed between two pans? His head looks too exaggerated in comparison to every other character in the poster. He has a knife chin. The black woman's design in the red outfit feels racist to me.
I'm still excited for these cartoons to come out though. I hope we can get lots of milk from these. Here's a TikTok from another upcoming indie animation, whose designs are also shit of course.

It's like they're trying to be diverse but they're too stupid to realise they view western clothing as the default even though that makes no damn sense - if you want to make her obviously Vietnamese, put her in a fucking ao dai! Viet girls wear those to high school for fuck's sake! It's so obvious! How do you miss this as a design choice?! This is such a terrible diversity fail, I hope they get cancelled for this obvious virtue signalling.
This Ethiopian design also suffers from a similar problem to the Vietnamese one. I think the artists don't actually study their references - it's like they're only glancing at the actual traditional clothing for like 2 seconds before designing the characters. They don't put in any real effort to showcase true diversity because everything is just a bit of 'cultural flair' sprinkled onto a generic white bread base. Sometimes it's barely noticable too, so that's a fail. Why not keep the off-shoulder cut for this character and make her feel even more princess-like? What is with the random ass shoulderpads? Why is her colour palette so dull compared to Vietnamese Princess, who is so bright? Why are they both purple when the other two characters have their own main colours, red and blue? Why not just make this character green? Their colours are terrible together, how do you design main characters like this?
Also they're making this a musical.

I get that it takes a lot of practice and these artists are obviously Dunning-Kruger noobs, but they're obviously too attached to their first idea. They need to learn to kill their darlings and actually make properly-referenced iterations instead of taking centuries to make a single design. Then at least they will have options for the final design. I genuinely hope all these series get fan redesigns that are 100x better than the original Vivsiepop-style, I'd honestly love to see that.
I also think it's lame they don't give the characters culturally appropriate names, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it's because they don't want to butcher the pronunciation.

The first character design is acceptable, but Mr Topaz's nephew's design SUCKS. Why are they mixing up hanfu with a tang suit? That's not the same damn era. Also, tang suits are inspired by manchurian clothing while hanfu originates from before that. The hanfu coat isn't even drawn properly - his sleeves would be twice as large and flowy, and they aren't the same shape. If they're afraid it'd be too troublesome to animate, just get rid of the coat! Why does he have a western collar? Why are the knot-and-loop buttons drawn so thick when they are drawn correctly on the first design??
Ayla looks Chinese-coded with her obvious qipao-style collar and the green jewellery that looks like jade. Plus her narrow eyes. How in the world is she English? I don't know anything about English clothing but still. Her outfit is just so generic - it's like cowboy mashed up with secretary, which could be good but it's just boring here. Also, her muddy outfit colours aren't good with that bright hair.
Why does the Vietnamese knight have western armour? Why is every kingdom weirdly westernised? Please don't tell me they're going to include colonialism as a subplot. Those green sleeves for the knight are an eyesore. What is this knockoff Barbie the Princess and the Popstar dress for Queen Estelaria's design??? They could've gone so hard with the Vietnamese fashion, I am so incredibly disappointed at the missed chances here.
Mr Manner's name makes me laugh. Why is the pattern like this with those weird side-rib things. Ms Arcadia looks like a secretary, you can't sense any German inspiration at all. Literally what is the point of putting references in this TikTok if it just makes everyone look worse? They could've tried giving her an ruffled skirt and frilly, wide-necked collar at least if the apron wouldn't fit. The pencil skirt is a waste. They could've given her a cute corset thing that sometimes shows up on cottagecore pinterest- German traditional clothing has something similar and it would've looked so cute and could have fit the formal teacher vibe too if designed right. Ms Helibe is boring.
Have fun trying to animate Head Chef Noemia you noobs lmao. Also, Taste kingdom being Brazilian-coded? Taste Kingdom? Since when was taste an element? Shouldn't it be spices???? What is this writing? God the Turkish characters are so ugly I don't even need to point out why
Anyways here's a tiktok as payment for my sperg - it's about Purple Vietnamese Girl's autism. It's very interesting seeing how certain artists lean more and more onto 'tell, don't show' when showing off their characters, especially when it comes to showing off how diverse they are. Like, making a good comic or animatic showcasing her personality would be wayyy better than infodumping for a minute straight on Tiktok, which is so boring.

Everything is some stupid vague blob shape with no details whatsoever to add visual interest like shadows, simple clothing folds, or shine on the hair. There's no definition on… anything. It's flat as shit. It's stiff and forced and the faces look derpy and amateur. There are literal 14 year old weeb girls who can draw more appealing characters than this.

>>2261477Considering this is planning to be an animation with investment and money thrown into it.
The art skill is shit you can see how stiff and blocky it is even for tumblr blob style.
The character designs are an absolute joke, theres nothing thats stands out about these characters there the run of the mill random tumblr fantasy ocs you'd scroll past without noticing. Look how muddy and ugly the colour schemes are its so amateurish and a disgrace, for example the purple one only have varied saturations of purple its shows their lack of skill and sense of color theory hence playing safe. Despite the fact they looked at ethnic clothing from different cultures this is the best they could come up with? Honestly I hope there is a trend where all the artists redraw and redesign these catastrophies cause they all look like ass.
No. 2262488
>>2262333Yeah, I get the impression it's not only a skill issue - I think artists like these tend to be extremely disconnected and sheltered from actual different cultures. Or they don't actually know how to observe the world around them because they're mostly stuck in their own head or at home. They don't even know how to study a picture correctly. It's so embarrassing to fail so hard at something they deem so important.
>>2262405I could not bear to watch the entire video of them glazing the shit out of their cartoon, but I'm still gonna shit on them anyways. I hate how artists 'tell, not show' to promote their cartoons. Wouldn't it be better to make some cringe meme animatics, or whatever zoomer gendies are doing on TikTok, instead of making your poor voice actors promote it? I'm not saying I actualy like TikToks like this one, but I stilll think it's more effective than 3.5 minutes of sheer glazing. At least you can actually (sort of) learn about the characters and form an impression of them without randoms hammering into your head how good this cartoon is going to be.
>>2262476On the rare chance that the pilot is released, I really do hope the character designer gets mogged by rando artists online. I'd love to see it.
I theorise that if the pilot releases, it might flop not because the art is bad, but because the musical parts are. People can tolerate bad art like this because it's not eye-searingly ugly, but bad audio is another story. Judging by zoomers' taste in music, maybe I am dead wrong.

What I enjoy about bsky is that there's an actual incentive to comment and communicate with users, a feature long obsolete on xitter after blue checkmarks and bots have overrun and ruined commenting on the site.

>>2258147What country are you from nona? If you're comfortable sharing, I'll go have a look at what opportunities you could take. Apart from that, you sometimes do need some connections/prior experience to get into a gallery, especially if you live rurally, whether that be through school or having your work exhibited through a competition or similar which sucks. Sometimes galleries will have open calls for submission/ongoing submissions on their websites, where you can send your portfolio and CV and artist statement (if they require it) so I'll recommend looking at galleries in your country, it doesn't really matter if it's local but if you can travel to the gallery (within a couple of hours or so) that'd help a little. I have zero experience of being scouted through social media, so I can't really comment on it but I'd check if the account is legitimate before submitting work to them. Highly recommend researching different galleries so you can decide which ones would be suitable for you so you don't get as many rejections. Also have no experience with international galleries so I can't comment on that either but from a brief skim over they seem to work the same.

Tanjeronie unironically makes me seethe because she's self taught, American and was 18/19 max when she drew picrel. Waxwings/yurucamp is another because of how she renders backgrounds and textures. I wish I wasn't so bad at drawing to make paper dolls
No. 2265504
>>2265499I'd say the biggest appeal is the possibilities. If you are decent at drawing you're able to design and create outfits for the doll VS a 3d one that is limited to both the skill and materials. And there's elements to drawn designs that just can't be replicated through real life.
The skill you'd need in sewing more complex outfits would take years to learn. A ton of the doll artists I find online that sew doll clothes are Russian, and I feel that in general Russian girls are still taught needle work. Here in the states I've never met anyone who grew up sewing, much less handsewing, and as someone who's teaching herself how to do it it is very defeating to spend hours on a piece only to have it turn out too large, too small, or just generally wonky. I don't have to worry about that with paper dolls, only about drawing and I can use photos as reference.
Plus, it's just a fun drawing exercise, and you can own more paper dolls than 3d dolls, since they are smaller and easier to store.

I have the most retard vent. My favorite aesthetic that I'm practically married to can be summarized as a "beach" style, I love drawing cute girls in bikinis having fun at the beach surfing etc with seashells and fish. The problem is that I like it in the most autistic barbie way, it's not meant to be sexy at all and just meant to be fun for girls the same way a bikini barbie doll is. I want to share it but moids make it impossible because obviously they think a bikini or swimsuit = coom for them. Any time I try to post I quickly get a few male followers and I chicken out and delete everything. Idk if I'm doomed to never be able to share my art or if there's some hidden female only platform somewhere… I miss when I was a little kid and girl game sites and forums existed virtually free of males.

Sort of side note, some might be born into artistic families as well, (or have some sort of community, or simply start very young when the brain is still spongy), and are always seeing art. Imagine we drew as much as we spoke, and were around artists most of the time? Children pick up speaking and the use of words pretty quickly, I imagine it'd be similar to that.

>>2265749>There must be something in their brains that gives salience to specific details, and that helps people be insanely good at a young age. Naturally you improve if you do it a lot AND have the ability to observe. I think if the young person is encouraged to draw exact copies of things rather than from imagination that does a lot too. If you start out by seeing art as making copies of things you see you always have the original to look back at and compare to. It's also easier to stop in the middle and pick it back up, you just look at the original again. And you never have to try to come up with cool things to draw, you just copy cool things other people made so you can steadily draw with less brain power needed. That makes practicing easier and therefor also more consistent. So when you finally do want to draw your own things you've got a steady foundation in your muscle memory already.
I think one thing that speaks for this is how when I grew up and started to learn how to draw I was being told that "copying art" by using references was sinful cheating art theft, users were aggressively getting called out left and right on every art platform if you even dared to draw something similar to what others had made. When I finally got older and realized those people are actually bonkers, that copying is ok and references are necessary to learn, my art jumped in skill about 20 times as fast. It's insane how much of a difference it made!

>Seeing AI replacing some of the lower-end painting methods, I feel so satisfied and super excited. There is a feeling that finally some people will have a sense of crisis and take the responsibility for their lack of progress. If you don't have your own unique things or keep up without changes, you will definitely be replaced. Definitely.>Very practical.>If you are truly in a poverty family and have no time to improve your skills, and this situation is unlikely to change in the long term, I really don't understand why you would choose to enter the art industry, which relies heavily on personal talent more than any other assembly line industry…There is a space for people like you in this industry is because of a shortage of low-level labour. However, these low-level workers are always the easiest to be replaced and are the most unstable group, even without any involvement from AI. I really don't know if it's due to be trapped in an filter bubble or some other reason that so many people have been deceived into thinking they should start with meaningless repetitive work at the bottom.>And even if it's just a beginner, it still requires some time and energy investment. Is someone kidnapping you and forcing you to start learning how to draw from scratch at your desk? If you can afford this initial cost, it probably means that your family is not really struggling financially. But if you are really in this swamp because of poverty, then I strongly suggest that you quit as soon as possible. Without several years or even decades of accumulation, you will always be in the elimination circle. This is not a stable job, there are many other jobs that are more stable than this…After she posted this some AI bro trained an AI on her style kek. Since it was all in Chinese I don't know how many people know about this in the western art sphere. She had some correct points about the art industry aside from AI though

Unpopular opinion, but so many of these Chinese anime artists shilled on here have really lackluster coloring to me. The softness they try to achieve looks grating against the hard edges the forms have. Having that sort of soft coloring style with strict blocked out forms is something that only looks good in actual watercolor. It makes many of the images muddy and hard to decipher. Plus, many of the paintings don't have appealing pallettes.
