There no way I’m not getting banned, cooked, or put out to pasture for this take, but here I go.
I recently had a conversation with my mother about penises— Yes. Walk with me— and how men use them as this all-round encapsulation of the male sexual threat. Like how the acts of manspreading, sending dick pics, and sporting semis in public all circle back to this urge men have to wield phallic imagery as a weapon to terrorise women.
Then, hours later, I had a mini eureka moment. Nothing fully fleshed out. Just a theory. But. You know this recent trend in fujoshi circles of calling fictional men ‘breedable’ and removing their dicks? (Like, actually just straight up ignoring their biological canonical dicks, kek). A lot of people seem keen to pin it on internalised misogyny and leave it at that. For TIFs? Sure. That may very well be. But there are plenty of unaffected GC women who also genuinely enjoy joking about submissive, fertile, ovulating men. And I don’t think it comes from self-hatred either; a lot of my fellow fujo ladies are super feminine and revel in their womanhood, and even if masculine, are still very comfortable in their own skin.
I think, (yes keep walking with me), the real answer here is that fujoshis are figuratively neutering their fictional men as a subconscious form of rebellion against the violent phallic imagery we’re subjected to on a near-daily basis from real men. Everyone likes to focus on the feminine language they’re using on these husbandos. But look closer, and you’ll note that it’s actually about the lack of masculine language. Particularly the lack of phallic, penetrative, and penile imagery. After all, a woman’s ideal fantasy man wouldn’t dare think about his opposite sex in such a demeaning fashion. Better to get rid of the symbolic source of it all — better to castrate him before he can manifest that threat. And unlike reality, (most unfortunately), only fiction can truly give women the freedom to exert that level of control over a man.
Anyway, that’s just my half-baked theory, because I don’t think ‘wahhh all fujo women hate themselves’ actually explains the unrestrained level of childish glee I see my fellow ladies revel in when emasculating their pretty male sex dolls on the internet, kek.

More seriously, it's just a het cope. They know that getting dicked is humiliating. That's why they often want to fuck their husbando. They want to be in power. But as always, they are centering male pleasure. If they were queens, they would speak about their husbando eating them and kissing their clit but they don't. Because they hate being female.
No. 1967382
>>1967342I agree, there's also a side to fujo fandom that likes "buff ukes who get railed", and there are plenty of normie non-gendie fujos there that don't say "breedable", but this side is even funnier when I see the FTMs with profiles like "STOP FETISHIZING US!!!" uploading and commenting on it. Like which are you here girl? Seme? Uke? Voyeur? Normie fujos only look at it as voyeur (outside of fujoyume who would be happy to take one place or another) but when FTMs get involved it's like "how far does the identity connect with the media content?"
Also it makes me think of what you said here:
>figuratively neutering their fictional men as a subconscious form of rebellion against the violent phallic imagery we’re subjected to on a near-daily basis from real men. In this case, instead of neutering as rebellion, it's subjecting male characters to porn-grade abuse as rebellion, especially when emphasising the masculinity of the "buff uke" or "manly uke" lol. It's another way of knocking men down a peg in a "degraded" role, which is satisfying to fujos for the reasons you stated. This type of yaoi comes across to me like women taking the blueprint of what men have turned sex into and then turning it onto men like an uno reverse card kek.

I don't know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I genuinely believe that Revolutionary Girl Utena is over-rated and it's influence has been a net negative, now I do think it's greatest strength was it's visual storytelling despite it's low-budget. I'm not talking so much about the metaphors but about bringing across messages through mundane details. There's a scene where it is shown that Anthy was raped by her brother by a shot of Anthy's glasses lying on a table in a dark room while the two are together which I regard as one of the best scenes for any anime. However, I must say that Utena's excessive use of visual metaphors and repetition to exemplify the same mesage kinda put me of.

also just, general scrotal fanservice or male-pushed female myths like this. dgmw i have read gl and female authored yuri

I don't think I've seen this discussed in depth here before, so I want to ask, what are other nona's opinions on RPF? Do you think it's a good or bad thing and does context matter? For example a Kpop idol vs a random actor, since the idol is essentially a curated 'character' do you think that makes it a more acceptable, softer form of RPF (thus explaining its prevalence on AO3 top ships of all time)? I also think it's funny how zoomers AKA the most batshit when it comes to 'problematic' ships managed to revive Minecraft youtuber RPF in 2020. Gives me fond memories of doing the same ten years ago KEK.
My personal opinion is that when women create it it's fine. It's funny seeing people get all up in arms about it being 'violating' when it's almost always men being written about, words on a screen is literally nothing compared to the kind of harassment any female celeb goes through. Men on the other hand are never capable of anything except degenerate rapey fantasies and you see it time and time again with barely legal (even underage) celebs eg Billie Eillish. It makes me feel kinda satisfied to see them get even a bit of that treatment thrown back at them and how hard they seethe, kek

>>1967808This is a weird example but I think that it was done somewhat tastefully in South Park. Stan and Kyle were originally based off of Trey and Matt respectively, but a few seasons in, they decided that the characters were too similar to each other when the guys based them off of themselves, so they decided to add traits to Stan and Kyle that distinguished them both from each other and the creators. They began writing Stan as more nihilistic and Kyle as more idealistic and preachy, which was good for the show long-term. It also made Kyle a better foil to Cartman, which made the four leads more well-rounded comedically as a group.

A while later I attempted to read it again and finished the whole way through because I got invested in the main pair and there weren't anymore depictions of SA past those early pages. The mangaka is a lesbian with a wife and children (picrel), so I assumed the trauma enacted on the lesbian character was something relatable to her or other women she knew (I tend to be drawn to messy stories portraying the horror of being abused, because it makes me feel seen and like there’s hope for people like me who feel damaged/irreparable. The mangaka may be similar as she has another story about a lesbian who suffers from abuse. Though I’m not an SA victim so I get there’s better ways to portray that trauma than what the mangaka did)
Or maybe she was trying to be edgy, I don’t know. I like the manga when I memory-hole the moment with the husband and the taxi-driver though. Admittedly I have forgiveness for the mangaka for being an honest to god lesbian, and for being 22 in 2007 when she started Gunjo and clumsily attempted to portray the disgust/horror of being assaulted by a man. She wrote more lighthearted lesbian stories since then but they haven't been translated. No. 1969017
>>1968382I don't like RPF but it's one of those things that are considered "icky" but also normalized in other contexts. It's not all that different from tabloids gossiping about celebrities and making namesmushes for couple, I've known normies IRL with no fandom involvement speculating on who will date who and what's going on behind the scenes. I read an argument that for bandom and kpop it's more about how their public personas are like characters, and that makes sense to me, especially when male singers engage in "stagegay" where its fanservice for the audience. Youtubers or podcasters RPF is creepy but for celebrities, musicians, politicians and historical figures (I kind of like some historical RPF actually) it's not a big deal unless its weird screeds about stalking and assaulting female celebrities, which I've seen. I don't know how many "fandom olds" are here but I remember that (IIRC) one of the stories that made FFN ban E-rated fics was a story about the pink Power Ranger getting raped and tortured, that same man wrote a similar fic about the Girls Aloud band and that feels like a step too far and borderline on hate speech.
This is only about stories and fan art, deepfakes should be illegal.

Anthy is Indian because she's recycled character design from a previous manga the creators worked on. I feel like being a loser as a woman or a girl is just (usually) almost entirely different than the origin, lifestyle and mindset of a failmale, a 4chan scrote, or a plain incel. I feel like even when women and girls are losers or failures, men who are losers/outcasts are still doing an "apples to oranges" when they try comparing themselves. That characters like Madotsuki and Tomoko shouldn't be meant for moids to self-insert, because moids can't even understand what it's like to

What genuinely disturbs me about the current fandom climate is how normalized character assassination has become. Whenever you have a fallout with a friend you drop a 50-page google doc on her leaking literally every private conversation you've had, obviously framing it as the worst thing ever and making her out to be a straight out villain. Or maybe you don't even really know her, you just don't like her guts in the invite only discord server you share so why not blow up accusing her of being this and that. Seeing this happen all the time has really caused me anxiety about interacting with people because you never know who decides to betray you over a petty feud and make an attempt at turning you into a persona non grata. I saw someone the other day leak someone's entire private twitter account where she had vented about her mental illness and self harm just to "prove how toxic she is" and that's just horrible, it's literally a private space you chose to follow yourself. Anyone else thinking about this a lot?
No. 1972313
>>1972302Definitely, nona. Happened to me last year with a group of discord friends I had been friends with for 4 years cause
I got accused of not respecting a friend's they/them pronouns kek. The real reason was more complicated and involved petty fights and talking shit behind each other's back constantly. I am glad it happened as it made me quit discord and xitter to focus more on myself but the character assassination part is what broke my heart. An online friend of 10 years who I had even met IRL
the one with the pronouns launched a massive campaign against me to all of our mutual friends and even people who weren't even in the discord chat. I had almost 40 accounts unfollow me before I stopped checking and she's STILL going as even simple acquaintances are blocking me even recently, kek. I laugh about how ridiculous it is now but it really broke my heart how quickly you can become persona non grata for absolutely petty and pretext reasons. You can see it when people jump on the bandwagon calling someone "
toxic and
abusive" and showing "proof" that only shows that they are deeply troubled and is extremely sad, just as you said.
I feel like most people who participate in fandoms who don't have an especially strong personality mostly walk on eggshells around each other, venting their real thoughts in private chats with people who you think are trustworthy but then when allegiances shift, have no qualms about airing all your dirty laundry and painting themselves as poor
victims of your manipulation in order to ingratiate themselves with the "correct" side. It's exhausting.
It's a shame that fandom changed so much because I feel like this wasn't the case over 10 years ago before Tumblr started taking the callout thing and running with it.

On social media everyone is a competitor. And this definitely affects fandom and friendships whether most people like it or not.
>One of my friends continuously posts screencaps from her DMs to me and I'm there like fuck, I don't need to see this, if you're posting sensitive things like this from your other friends then what kind of stuff are you revealing about me to others? That was the case with my friend, and lo and behold she was also sharing our private conversations with others while I believed I was the exception. Thinking I was the exception, I made her the exception too and shared private chats with her in turn, which in hindsight I highly regret. It was all a shitshow. Lesson learned, if someone is complaining to you behind a friend's back, they are 100% doing the same to you to the other person.
I honestly believe it stems from being afraid of conflict. Yet this walking around eggshells constantly climate somehow ends up creating an even bigger conflict than if you simply confronted whoever wronged you. But that's no longer allowed in the current social media climate, lest you be accused of any form of intolerance. Which is why everyone has private accounts and friends-only lists and the ftiends-only lists of the private accounts. It's like everyone wants to be seen but at the same not be seen. It's enough to drive a woman mad.

I don't know if this fully belongs here but I really don't understand third-world wokies. like I just went through an 8-hour power outage which is the second one this week and I know I'm in a better position than most people in my country, experiences like these give me certain grounded prioritises, yet so many people I know genuinely seem to think and act like we live in a liberal, westernized upper-class country. As a nonna in the fakeboi thread said, "wealthy first worlders would need to crash and burn themselves to see what real hardship is like, meanwhile the wealthy whites in south america and chinese in indonesia and thailand among others are forced to see it every day, yet decide not to"
In the context of fandom spaces, it's bizarre seeing these people so confidently speak as if they knowing about their own nations. I had a few chinese mutuals who lived in SEA and they would constantly badger about white people, yet they never seemed to even acknowledge that they were incredibly well off compared to their country, these same people get into arguments about how "Haruhi is non-binary" or how offensive x western/japaense movie/show was for not being the right type of stereotypical or getting the skin-tone wrong.

I love when certain artists paint their desi interpretations of Kaeya, e.g. by giving him a slightly beakier nose and warmer skin. Do artists have to do this? Of course not. But when it’s done well, it can look really nice. I just hate that the current perception of race-altering is god awful ugly performative tumblr-esque horror pieces. There’s so much fun to be had in taking a character’s cultural heritage and running with it. This isn’t an exclusively

Most stories work better with Genderbent male cast turned into women and women turned into men because then male characters turned into female characters are relevant, meanwhile the female characters that are turned into male characters become endearing or something you can ignore depending on how badly written are the women.
Just think of your average Shonen anime or super hero cartoon, two examples would be something like Dragon Ball for the Shonen anime and X-men for the comic.
Goku would be a silly girl that loves fist fighting and that managed to get a husband like Chichi who is very responsible and sweet, but also very patient with her silly wife who saves the world and manages to die and resurrect a bunch of times and at some point becomes a goddess.
In X-men you would have a varied team of people with supernatural powers that have complex personalities and probably less retarded looking outfits, assuming you keep the most important aspects of the characters' outfits.

>>1973957It's a criticism to all characters in general, if one can only describe a character as "stoic" or "honorable" then chances are there's not much to be said about that character, it's a trait a lot of secondary characters in media default to because the writer has no better ideas for them and just makes them super serious.
In the case of female characters this also leads to them being made into "no fun allowed" moms of the groups they're in.

abusive.
>>1973615Yeah, I think it's mostly a cop-out, or rather an easy way to explain the real reason. It's that most one dimensional tropes for male characters are cool or inoffensive, whereas the one dimensional tropes for female characters are actively annoying and offensive. There are tons of male characters written with little depth, but if you don't care about men's feelings or interiority, it just doesn't matter to you. But if you care about women, seeing female characters reduced to panty shots or therapy mom girlfriend will make you seethe more.
>>1973959I think there's something to be said for characters being shaped by their lives, and every woman's life is touched by misogyny. But I'm very sick of it being such a focal point in so many female characters' stories, as if they can't have a personality outside of being victimized by men. I don't really mind the "man in a woman's body" type of characters because ultimately, a character being affected by misogyny doesn't mean that she has to wear it all the time or have it be a defining characteristic.

Idk, just a thought based on how I've seen some people (here and elsewhere) talk about this.
(as someone who pretty much only platonically likes characters of either sex, there's also the matter of some of the tropes you just seem to enjoy by default being more present among male characters than female, which'll skew your 'favourites list'. I also think that a lot of the complaints towards the weakness of female characters stem from consuming limited media whose genre discourages more complicated female characters– battle shounen, pulpy romance novels, etc. anything designed to be as palatable and self-insertable as possible, really, will have garbage characters)

So we were discussing this in the historyfag thread, but the almost complete and rapid downfall of Hamilton and it's fandom is fascinating to see because it can be directly linked to a change in political views. Hamilton came out at a point of american liberal optimism that no longer exists, beyond politics a lot of people are re-examining certain biases. like how much of a big deal it made out it's female characters only for all three speaking female characters to be love interests, the way Hamilton's life is framed for drama and also the decision to portray all the british and loyalists with white actors also seems kinda insulting,(It is worth considering that quite a few of them, including one directly mocked in the musical, were actually anti-slavery, more then the founders)

The only thing about this actor face that says "Zuko" is the scar, and even then it doesn't look as grotesque as the cartoon, it looks more like a black-eye.

>>1975693>>1975695Oh shit, now that you mention it, this can look very awkward for the Live Action. A part of Zuko and Azula's contrast in character arc involved the fact that Azula was the prodigy and the objectively better firebender than Zuko. Along with his character development and redemption, Zuko's growth included becoming a better firebender once he learned to let go of his anger and confusion, and learned from dragons. Azula became more and more undone, which caused her firebending performance to weaken at the final Agni Kai. The Live Action is making it look like it's in reverse, which is going to look contradictive towards the point of the original show having Zuko be the sloppy fighter at first.

Can we take a break from the fujo/yurifag wars to talk about how spergy comicbook fans? People always talk about how crazy other shippers are (like zutarafags whining for 2 decades). But comicbook shippers are even spergier because they know if they bully a writer enough they might actually change the ship in the next run. Currently, watching Batman/Catwoman and Dick/Starfire fans chimp out over Dick/Batgirl and Batman/Talia.

Anyway, I just came by to point out that "maledom" was just made up by het girls in fandom who couldn't stand the term "femdom" and felt that there needed to be a counterpart term for 'justice'. There was no need for it since 90% of hetfic is written with the man being dominant in bed. Also, irl, males are 90% of the doms in BDSM communities and events. Male domination is everywhere in bdsm and in regular sex and there was no need to create a specific term for it.
Before I left fandom, around 10 years, women who got off to fictional abuse of women were always complaining about how they couldn't find a lot of bdsm fic with a male dom/female sub. Back then they would just get mocked and told no one wanted to read that shit and that most het fic was already maledom because 90% of it had the male written as the dominant one in and out of bed, so read that instead. But that wasn't enough for them. They wanted whips and chains and abuse of women.

Majority of misogynistic power dynamics in sex wouldn't exist if women weren't so tuned into having sex that is attractive for scrotes rather than just having sex they like.
I never understood the pushback against women talking about sexuality. I know sex positivity is a libfem meme. But it is so normalised for women to just not expect to enjoy sex and go with whatever turns on their bf/moid because we made sex being for moids pleasure the default.

>moid characters can be racists, sexists, rapists, pedos, kill innocent people, hate crime black people, torture fan-favorite characters, make the dumbest fucking decisions that everyone even fans know is dumb, and still be loved or sympathized with
>yet a woman being too annoying, or too selfish, or too weak, or too overconfident, or too standoffish, or too strong is enough to make them bad useless irredeemable characters who should die for the good of the show
>even the one female character they liked became 'ruined' and 'annoying' in their eyes because she wasn't acting like a loving nice and perfect girlfriend AFTER NEARLY BEING RAPED
>only female character they haven’t hated on is a 17yo girl with miniscule screentime, who they make 1013820283 sex jokes about with 13yo Carl and even his dad
Honestly it's ruining the watching experience for me because now when I see these male characters being flawed and dumb assholes, I remember how fans will still love them but rake the women over the coals for whatever. The only male I saw get genuine hatred was s2 Carl but that's because people are harsher on annoying kid characters in general.
I don't think the writing on this show is particularly good either, at some point I started treating it like a comedy kek, but seeing how fans acted is just fucking with my mood.
And let’s be real, if s3 Michonne were a guy and played by Rick or Daryl's actors instead, these redditors would've fucking adored her. Killing zombies with a katana? Campy and badass! Always quiet and grumpy? Lol what an edgelord! Always withholding important info? Annoying but maybe he has his reasons, it's a zombie apocalypse where you can't trust anyone and Rick hasn't exactly been welcoming to him either. [absence of "his character is so stupid he should be killed off" comments]. Saving Andrea? Protecting and caring for her when she’s sick? Walking several miles alone on a wounded leg, surrounded by zombies, just to bring these strangers some baby formula? Awww, he’s actually a sweetheart all along! "I didn't ask for your help" Aw and he's tsundere! Barf. (Andrea hate was already extreme but it would definitely be amplified tenfold if it was a white moid in Michonne's role, because people are obsessed with dickriding men and emphasizing how unreasonable women are)
Also picrel actress is based for keeping her short hair regardless of what the comic character looked like (and causing moid seethe)

>>1983589>But men are worse!Just stop, you don't need to say this. LC already knows men are worse we don't need a crash course on it. If all you can say in the face of
valid criticism about how certain women sexualize female abuse and suffering is that men are worse you don't have much of an argument. Are we not allowed to criticize pedo-pandering women now since men are the actual pedophiles?

>>1983065my guilty pleasure is project sekai. it has a (deserved) reputation of insane gendie zoomer fanbase. lots of older vocaloid fans also hate it for bad tuning on covers, adding OC characters, being an obvious cashgrab etc. and I don't even disagree with any of the criticisms, there's a lot wrong with the game but I still love it and I love vocaloid. The OC characters grew on me as I read the stories and the cards are pretty.
also it makes me so happy to see so many new people find vocaloid from the game, I've been a fan since the beginning and it's never been so popular. Hopefully all these new fans and funding are used for something good No. 1983657

Also, I have noticed that weebs don't understand that when japanese companies add a character that's physically out of the mold they are pandering to a very specific audience. I have no idea how weeb egirls on tiktok convinced themselves that super sonico/pochaco/taruco are actually ''body positivity representation'' and not hamplanets with giant breasts made for men with a fat fetish

Also I'm not fond of the Ace Attorney fandom and their obsession with insisting Phoenix/Edgeworth and Ryunosuke/Kazuma are canon pairings, especially for the latter. It's definitely one of the earliest I'M LITERALLY A GAY MAN!!! fandoms and one hit the hardest by the troon social contagion.
(I yumed Edgeworth as a kid so I had it worse in 2006 lmao)

>>1983642Vocaloid in general became pretty detached from it's original otaku fanbase. It hit the mainstream for all the wrong reasons, Miku trending on twitter always as a shitty Garfield style meme or a mouthpiece to own Rowling and le evil terfs, she's even "the SJW binder"
I don't know how it got to this point but then the official english account embraced the unfunny memes and retweeted that image of black, mtf and hijab Mikus doing the kumbaya, it's not surprising her new fans are unbearable

>>1983642As a long time vocaloid fan i have very mixed feelings on pjsekai, it feels very soulless and i hate the gendie fanbase it amassed which eventually spread to the vocaloid fandom (i partially blame that tranny faggot mizuki for that). Also like you said, the cover tunings are shit and feels like an insult to vocaloid. One thing i can praise the game for however is its non sexualized female characters which is a rarity in any video game as well as the cute cards

rambling ahead.. maybe its just a specific problem for me but I hate that people cant simply just enjoy a female character anymore. it always has to be turned into some type of performative lesbianism for social media clout.
Cant search up anything about a female character without having to scroll through hundreds of posts with people really overreacting with how much they want to kiss a female character, how gay they are for her, or the thousands of sexual labels the female character has. I understand sexuality and stuff but does everything have to be centered around how much someone wants to fuck a character etc?

>>1983065ashamed is a strong word tbh, but bg3. I just like it for the fun dnd vibes since my group is on hiatus, and some of the characters/story aspects are neat, but the fandom has a lot of rancid little retards running around in it. It's also a bit tiring having to deal with the game's reputation of being a romantic smutfest, both within the fandom and outside of it.
On the other hand though, the more dnd-oriented side of the fandom is much more pleasant to deal with and reminds me of those halcyon days of early 2010s tumblr fandom, so that's fun.

>>1983944I know that hornyposting has always been a part of fandom, but I agree and feel like there's a large chunk of fans at the moment that don't really know how to talk about their enjoyment of something without equating it to attraction, if that makes sense? Even then, as annoying as that can be, it doesn't bother me until I get people insisting on being horny towards my ship-free sfw fan content or worse, trying to rope me into their sexual interests. Whatever happened to boundaries, christ.
It especially sucks, like you said, in regards to female characters– you can't just like them because they're cool or kind or clever or fucked up, no, it's gotta be for the coom-factor only. Male characters were already a lost cause for enjoying 'platonically', so that's whatever though.
