Finally, a thread for me. I like playing Boyfriend to Death clones and this one's whole thing is that (you) are a murderstacy this time and kidnap guys to torture. There's one interesting route where you kidnap a sheltered cute boy who grew up in a cult and then there's picrel, the obese ugly uno reverse card route that pissed me off because he overpowers the MC and puts her in the victim position. So we don't even get to kill him in a game advertised as being a reverse murder sim. On a side-note, I hate how BTD clones/western yandereslop never gets finished and are always stuck as demos.

I see so many devs give up on their games because they don't get much success, or they struggle to learn programming and get stuck forever on a technical issue, whereas troons get free help all the time. It's also in part because making connections in the niche requires being pro-active and sucking the dick of the big devs to get them to shout you out, and TiMs are more likely to have no self-awareness and feel comfortable doing this. The admin of the biggest western VN dev server is also a TiM, and he goes out of his way to promote other TiMs and games about troons.
As a female dev you're also more likely to get entitled comments asking you to switch your protagonist to male, calling you homophobic for having a female protagonist or whatever other shit men never have to deal with, and I've seen devs quit over that kind of harassment. And finally, otomes with any kind of NSFW content regularly get review bombed by scrotes (because they search for "adult visual novels" and are angry to find anything that isn't some ugly ass 3D rape simulator) so they'll be harder to find if the itch.io rating gets too low.
There's plenty of female devs that push through anyway, learn to code all alone and gain an ok following with no or minimal connections, but I'd say they're split between the handful of super big devs who now dev full-time and make enough money to have a team and the many devs with full-time jobs who chip away at their projects slowly and go on hiatus when life gets in the way. The latter are hard to find if you don't dig through itch.io tags really deeply, but they are there.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers the posts on the Lemmasoft forums about Mage Wars. I think this all happened in like 2017. I used to love reading the developer’s posts because there was so much drama kek. The backstory for those unfamiliar is there was this very obvious Fate/Stay Night rip-off that the author would insist was NOT copying at all. Tell me if this sounds familiar: a 16-year old mage with daddy issues who is really bad at being a mage (his main ability is creating pale imitations of real things), but is really good at cooking gets conscripted into a battle royale against his will. Other major characters include a silver-haired and mysterious loli with a grudge against the protagonist despite him not recognizing her and turns out to be much older than she looks, a tsundere gifted mage with family issues who initially attacks the protagonist before becoming his ally, an older man who initially seems like a semi-decent guy but it turns out he’s the biggest menace in the story and a sociopath who enjoys watching people’s suffering, and a blonde girl who’s been living in Europe and possesses a massive personal investment in the battle royale. See? Totally different. The author also wrote a bunch of negative comments for voice actors, singers, etc. who were working for free, and there are several posts on the forums with these people just arguing about who didn't communicate effectively. It was so entertaining, and I know I’m not properly recapturing the magic. I decided to reread it because I wanted to share with the thread.
Notable features include reused Touhou sprites, voice acting that will repeat again and again until you hit the next line (Yuuji, is it really you? Yuuji, is it really you? Yuuji, is it really you?), an underestimation of the world's population by about 4.2 billion, an Italian catgirl, cooking scenes (everyone’s favorite part of FSN), a character taking ‘liar liar, pants on fire’ in the most literal way someone possibly could, and certain images not having been implemented so instead of having a background, it’s just a black screen with “image ‘kitchen’ not found” written in the corner. One plot element I found really funny was that the story promises 16 mages, but I guess that was too many to handle, so Not-Illya just fucking murders 6 of them off-screen. They die off-screen in every route. The maximum we ever see is 7 mages plus the overseer. There’s another part where you encounter a button on a random street while walking home from school. It has a sign that says “do not press,” and if you choose to press it, the game will prompt you twice more. Answer ‘yes’ three times, and the street explodes. The antagonist of the second route jumps out of nowhere and calls you stupid. To be fair, I did deserve to be called stupid there. If you don’t press it, the antagonist jumps out of the shadows to inform you that you ‘passed the test.’ I don’t know what I expected to happen when I pressed it, but what was his end goal here? He states it’s to make sure the protagonist isn’t susceptible to reverse psychology and then starts ranting about how he hates people who are susceptible to that kind of thing, which, I guess that makes sense?? But then, later in the story, the reverse psychology option, when presented by that same man, IS the right one. Imagine if Kirei Kotomine had put a massive “DO NOT PRESS” button in the middle of Fuyuki City, and then when Shirou pressed it, Kirei started ranting about how it represented his own capacity for evil and his struggle with his own morality. That’s how random this all felt. At one point, there’s a character who I thought was being built up as some kind of edgy rival, and then he becomes a victim of the magical equivalent to a drone strike and fucking dies in like his second appearance. Then, the guy who killed him, the protagonist’s best friend (surprise villain), also fucking dies in this exact same scene for a different reason. This is immediately after the betrayal reveal. The edgy rival character shows up in multiple routes and usually dies without contributing, so I don’t think he really had any purpose. In the first route, the main villain’s motivation is to protect his grandson (the protagonist) from dying in the Mage Wars by murdering all of the mages, but then there’s a bad ending where he just poisons the protagonist?? That does NOT seem like the best way to keep your grandson alive. The way the third route starts is by the catgirl breaking into the protagonist’s bedroom and forcing him to sign up for the Mage Wars. There is another character cursed to have cat ears who kills himself by drinking poison nine times (because as a catboy, he has 9 lives) in front of his two children. There are also a lot of typos that are really funny, with my favorite being when you “call an ambivalence” for an injured girl. If this post seems disjointed, it’s because Mage Wars has no pacing. Shit just happens. This VN is so schizo. Please give it a try because I didn’t include everything and there’s much more wild shit that happens. You know in the bad art thread, how some anons will write “sovl” in response to specific drawings? This is the VN equivalent.

Remilia's shown to consistently fetishize Arisael's status as an un-fallen angel, but it never gets the seriousness it should attributed to it considering how stressed Arisael is over fucking up as an angel. The actual 'toxi yuri' between them could've at the bare minimum been "fallen-angel sees how angel is falling apart at the seams and works to insidiously further that process" but instead, no, it's "Remilia is just the type of emotional/sexual support and comfort Arisael needed actually! they'll be fallen together!" the '
toxic yuri' is just they tried to maul each other when they first met (and had some violent sex because of course.) Otherwise Arisael is just a bratty, mentally unstable tsundere and Remilia is bordering an outright self-insert, frankly.
Toward the end there's a moment where Remilia asks if Arisael every really thought of humans as 'people.' He says no, Rem says that's bad, Ari goes "wtf so maybe if I had just connected to someone normally…" big emotional moment whatever whatever. The problem is, though, that the few interactions we've seen Arisael have with humans just… don't convey that. Quite noticeably detached/distant? Sure. But he showed some level of legit affection for Priscilla, and literally right after the first scene he's worried about how selfish he got with Priscilla during sex, to say nothing of the agonizing he does over feeling bad for having sex whilst he can hear the prayers and sense the feelings (specifically exhaustion, hunger, loneliness) of people around him. Like there are little bits and pieces during the later part that ig give credence to the reveal of his opinions, but absolutely none of them are as weighty as when he's tearing himself apart over no longer being able to assuage the troubles of people around him and instead simply having sex where he STILL feels like he screwed up on some level and hurt the person he was 'comforting.' It may just be better to say initial Arisael is simply different from later Arisael. What few interesting things that could've been done with what gets shown at the start gets swallowed up by the dev's unrepentant desire for playing into his "sadist big sis x brat little sis" dynamic between Arisael and Remilia.

I’ve posted about disliking Our Wonderland before in another thread, but because of how bad it is, I felt weird posting in the visual novel thread. I’ve always wanted to complain about it. I apologize for the length and anything I misremember, but I’ve never gotten the chance to air out my grievances. Here are some details I wrote down at the time alongside anything else I remember:
>Main characters are an asexual moid (Iggy) who thinks his friends all want to rape or fuck him (he’s not wrong), Blind Cartman (Genzou), a rapist TiF (Gidget), a GnC woman who surprisingly does not troon out and instead murders her infant daughter to enter Wonderland and power the Baby Murder Tree (Bucks), and a cannibal with possible autism (Orlam).
>The plot focuses on a group of childhood friends who used to visit a world called “Wonderland,” which is accessed with a child’s blood. They have not been able to enter Wonderland in many years because they’re all in their 30s. One day, Wonderland reopens, and Iggy must figure out why it reopened and how he managed to ruin every single one of his friends’ lives throughout the course of their friendship. It’s kind of like It’s a Wonderful Life, but if George Bailey killing himself would’ve actually improved everyone’s lives. I’m not joking. Iggy is canonically responsible for Genzou going blind, Bucks marrying a moid who drives her to alcoholism, Gidget abandoning her greatest passion to pursue a dead-end career in modeling, and Orlam being bullied.

It is such an unambiguous depiction of a woman trooning out due to misogyny that I’m shocked it wasn’t intentional.
>If you’re wondering why I barely talk about Bucks, it’s because she’s basically a nonentity. She exists to kill everyone with an ax at the end of each route. All character development she receives is in relation to her husband.

>It turns out Bucks’s infant daughter did not die. Instead, she’s been kept in a half-dead state inside the Baby Murder Tree this whole time. She’s been sending psychic messages begging Iggy to put her out of her misery throughout the story. The infant erases her own existence to ensure the other characters get a second try from childhood to have a happy life. Genzou still has his boner-stairs incident, though, so he’s blind in the good timeline. Sucks for him.
I didn’t even get into all the weird pseudo-sexual shit (characters being forcibly bathed and dressed by other characters, Gidget trying to cut off Iggy’s penis with scissors, the narration implying Gidget rapes Iggy’s corpse, Orlam trying to cut off Iggy’s penis so he can eat it (I mean eat it like a hot dog. This is not a euphemism for oral sex), Iggy getting felt up by tentacles and pissing himself, Gidget making a harem of Iggy dolls that she informs Iggy she fucks, or the background orgy CG). I don’t want to make this sound like the incest VN posted earlier in the thread. It’s not. It has character development and relationships that, in more competent hands, would have been worth exploring. There were concepts I liked (it does a cool meta thing in Chapter 5), and I didn’t hate a couple of the characters. It’s nearly 20 hours long, it has a staggering number of CGs, and there are animations at the end of every chapter, so the writer has a lot of love for this project. I can envision a world in which this would’ve been good, and that makes it so much more frustrating. The writer had a story to tell, and it makes me sad that story had to be like this.

Basic premise is that you are Mishiro Usui, who wakes up in a purgatory
under a lake with zero idea of who she is and is stuck until she breaks all the mirrors containing her memories
so she can have a wish granted before she moves onYou meet two people in a main area, one is Yuzu, a fifteen year old girl, and the other will be referred to as Pedo Moid, who have been stuck here for a while and are impressed you broke a mirror while they are unable to find their own. Bulk of the fof the game is doing standard RPG Maker logic and maze puzzles to unlock doors to find mirrors to break all while being followed by a scary shadow. Breaking mirrors involves reliving one of your memories and then finding a way to kill yourself. Very emo.
You can go to the main area at any time to talk to either Yuzu or Pedo Moid, who will say pedo moid things occasionally and gross your character out. Both will ask you to break their mirrors for them, which is optional but imperative for unlocking the true endings.
And requires special keys you'll need to find >You are a super depressed autismo, and everything sucks for you; you hate school, you're being severely bullied, your mother hates your guts and the only thing going for you is that you're decent at painting because of your grandfather but you don't really care for it>It's so bad that you're contemplating suicide and go to a lake to kind of hype yourself up for it>A boy painting at the lake sees you and thinks you're going to kill yourself and tries to stop you by talking to you (he will be referred to as LI) and begging you to at least stick around so you can pose for his painting because you remind him of someone >LI and you start hanging out in an abandoned building near the lake so he can paint you. He often compares you to his dead sister >It's revealed that he can only paint here because his mother hates art and will tweak out if he sees him doing it>You being a lolita on the weekends is mentioned off handedly by a bully, this is not important at all nor adds really anything to your personality because we never see it kek you then stab the bullies, doing so too much unlocks the mandatory evil edgy bad ending>One day you and LI are walking home and LI's mother tries to run you over and LI pushes you out of the way and he dies and then you decide to drown yourself in the lake because you find no point in lifeAfter this you can unlock the big main doors and get the Killing Yourself ending if you decide to skip the next part.
Your wish is that you want to have never existed and granting that means you get wiped from existenceMore puzzles follow, but also pretty significant lore.
Yuzu backstory:
>She is a completely normal high school student>There is a new student in the class who she immediately crushes on, we will call her Albino-chan>Yuzu and Albino-chan hang out often and become very close, Albino-chan acts very similar to Mishiro>Albino-chan talks about how she's not supposed to exist and that she's an abomination, then kills herself a week later at the lake>Yuzu then becomes obsessed with the occult and trying to resurrect Albino-chan, then comes to the conclusion that she needs to kill herself at the lake so she can get given a wish to bring her back to life and/or join her in the afterlifePedo Moid backstory:

most of which involves you still being alive are quite sweet.
True ending is that you become an amazing artist, way better than your faggot grandfather, who creates art based on your experience in purgatory and you receive LI's painting which is you and Albino-chan together, smiling. I love-hate this so much game, it's so fucking over the top and stupid kek, truly made for sixteen year olds everywhere.
