A thread about all about the book drama world be it:
Booktok/tube drama
Authortok/tube drama
Book review/Goodreads drama
Notable author cows:
>Xiran Jay Zhao - Author of "Iron Widow." A themby who insists that she's NB and wants they/them pronouns but always dresses and presents like a woman. Started off on youtube and became successful after reviewing Disney's Live Action Mulan. With the new success, she continued to make claims how China was "so queer until white people came in!" ignoring the eunuchs, concubines, and wanton sexual abuse of boys. Still makes incorrect claims about Chinese history. Family are rich Chinese with ties to the CCP. Even mainlanders dislike her. Used viral success to promote her book, which is a Darling in the Franxx rip off. Commissions people to make "fanart" of her "polyamorous" characters from book. Reported the Cat Corrain drama, which caused people to think she was Cait Corrain and received lots of hateful messages. Doesn't know when to STFU about politics and claims her new book is delayed because of her stance on Palestine. Currently acting out because she got disqualified for the Hugo award, which is hosted in China this year.
>Piper CJ - Author of "The Night and It's Moon". She's self-published a book with a self-depricating attitude that "no one will read it" yet advertises it like crazy on tiktok, garnering lots of interest. Book gets released, it's predictably bad-average. Youtube book reviewer ReadswithRachel makes a video reviewing using buzzwords like plagarism and "problematic representation." CJ and her friends (or sockpuppets) start to leave nasty messages and report Rachel's tiktok. Overall CJ doesn't take criticism well. Recently wrote another book
>Cait Corrain - Author of "Crown of Starlight." Started off as a Reylo fanfic writer. Created lots of sockpuppet goodread accounts to reviewbomb up-and-coming books in the same genre as hers and other indie randos. Absolutely retardedly used those same accounts to give her book 5 stars. People caught on to the fake reviews and figured out it was her. When caught, she created fake conversations with the "real culprit." Screenshot convos were horribly editted and cropped, indicating she didn't even bother to at least have a conversation with herself. No one bought it. Got dropped by her agent and publishing company. Authors that got reviewbombed all happened to be POC and got labed as racits. In her apology, she blamed it all on depression and alcoholism.
>Alice Oseman - author of "Heartstoppers." Hates BL made by Asians and touts herself as writing true queer romance without the problematic stuff "Asians" write. Currently getting eaten alive by the audience she bowed down to by daring to make the implication of her 17-year old male character looks up sex questions on google
>Alex Aster - Author of "Lightlark." Blew up on tiktok over making videos about vague tropes and asking "Would you want to read a book about X trope??" The viral success got her a publishing deal and a movie deal. Aster claimed she was self-made. Turns out her family is rich and her twin sister is a millionare. Book is released and it's laughably bad and juvenile. Sequel written and released a little over a year after first book. Still bad.

Thanks for the thread anon. The amount of abuse disguised as romance/erotic books that booktok shills scares me. These women are on a platform predominately filled with kids and teens and promoting disgusting shit like pic rel.

>>1959156lately there has been a discussion about age appropriate ratings on books and adding a blatant THIS BOOK CONTAINS GRAPHIC SEX SCENES on the cover/spine/somewhere because a lot of popular booktok/bookstagram/booktuber users have come out and said they witnessed girls as old as 12 years buying icebreaker and other novels with graphic sex scenes. shit just flies under the radar because of cutesy comic covers like this. of course there are also others who are like "uhm ackshooalley!" and then proceed to explain that they read books at college level at age 12 or something and read smut on wattpad and they came out fine, etc. i have to admit that i did that too but my 12 year old brain couldn't really process the sex scenes and was mostly unbothered by them. it was only when i got a bit older, like 14, that i realized what exactly i was reading. this is not to defend this phenomenon at all btw, i still think they shouldn't read hardcore smut at age 12.
>>1959161nta and i have no solid explanation for this either, but maybe women just go through a hardcore phase of sex obsession after being repressed all throughout puberty because girls aren't supposed to be interested in sex? most of these smut booktok users are young women between 18 and 25, with a few being much older. i had a roommate who was super uptight and also vaguely religious but her bookshelf was just rows upon rows of smut books. i also noticed that some seem to larp as cool girls by reading these books in public tho show everyone how cool and unbothered they are about consuming smut.
picrel, this is only mildly milky but i'm in the illumicrate server and you're not allowed to talk about jkr there. someone even posted in the introductions channel and mentioned she liked hp and someone else immediately replied "hiii gurl you're not allowed to talk about THAT ONE SERIES here!" it's hilarious.

The publisher is probably giving her the cold shoulder because they're trying to find a way out of their contract because she's clearly difficult to work with. Hope the performative activism was worth potentially being blacklisted by the publishing industry Xiran!! Also of course she's bashing the publisher and then telling everyone to go preorder her book—the only way she makes any sales is when she starts drama or inserts herself into it kek
also thank god someone made this thread, it's crazy how many authors are complete cows and their fans eat it right up

>>1959246since everyone loves these "spicy" romance novels so much i decided to give picrel a try when the hockey fiasco happened and it was so bad. the female character's entire personality hinged on her being tiny and smol and pint sized and little and she had to jump off of bar stools and stand on her widdle tippy toes and whatnot. it was so cringe. then i thought it was finally over after 300 pages of will they/won't they but it kept going for another 300 pages because they suddenly broke up again and shit like that.
>>1959248you do realize that there are explicit sex scenes in icebreaker and similar cartoon cover novels, right? the problem is that these books looks "safe" but they're actually for adults and not intended for the YA market. they're NOT for children and young teenagers who are not prepared to read about explicit sex scenes. there are novels out there for teenagers that deal with first love and first sexual experiences without the characters fucking like crazy, using dirty talk, and engaging in weird kink.

>>1959244>>1959245The thing is, the typical pattern for books that become popular on "booktwt" is that the first one usually performs well and receives praise from critics. It then becomes mandatory for sequels to be made. However, when the second book is released, it fails to make any impact because people only liked the first book as a way to virtue signal. Lindsay Ellis book "Axiom End" had a similar fate, and I assume Xiran would have suffered the same fate.

Some people were mentioning Marion Zimmer Bradley in the fandom drama thread and the fact that she enabled her pedophile husband and allegedly sexually abused her own daughter. Here's some more info:
http://www.marionzimmerbradley.com/I hadn't heard of this before and haven't read Mists of Avalon nor her daughter's memoir on the subject, but apparently her daughter is a proud homophobe and blames her mother and father's pedophilia on the fact that they were both homosexual. It's not surprising considering the kind of abuse she suffered but it seems like her views are extreme enough that no regular publisher was willing to publish her book.

HP has better writing, more fleshed out characters, a more cohesive plot, and more compelling backstories than all the slop that's being shilled as 'better' because one character has he/she/cloud pronouns. Can you imagine how much doxing and death threats the server has avoided by not letting the sensitive queerios discuss JKR and HP? That could land them into serious legal trouble. >>1959318I've talked about this before, but here's the full story for anyone interested, I'm sure most people have never heard of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, They’re one of the main SFF tastemakers, founded by Damon Knight in 1965. They award the Nebula Prize, which, along with the Hugo, is the premier award for Science-Fiction and Fantasy authors.
Marion Zimmer-Bradley, was central to the SFWA clique and even was on the board in the 70s. at that time MZB her work was considered instrumental in lesbian and feminist fantasy literature, she was also a founder of the Society for Creative Anachronism, which is a major LARP group. MZB’s husband was the “Grand Master” of Creative Anachronism(a space often filled with children)
her husband was the subject of a letter called “The Breendoggle” in which the Berkely SFF crowd debated what to do about his frequent "incidents". her husband was eventually arrested and convicted for this. His daughter Moira, was one of his accusers. Moira has made it clear that MZB, and her step-mother and everyone in that clqiue knew what he did and either just ignored it or actually tried to help him. It was public knowledge. It was a network of fucked up people.
there's also there two men, who were also involved in the scene and likely pedos as well.
>Samuel Delaney - another “Grand Master”. He’s the author of Dhalgren, a shitty porno scifi novel, as well>Ed Kramer, SFWA alum, founder of Dragon-Con, and Nebula host, is also a convicted child abuser. He was vigorously defended in this by other notable SFWA alums. No. 1959325

now, blogpost, but: I consider myself a pretty avid reader, probably 40-50 books per year from a variety of genres. Occasionally, I add in some trash erotica, because I'm an adult woman and it gives me a nice break from the more 'serious' reading. Most of my friends who are hardcore readers in their mid 20s are the same: reading a lot from all genres, but occasionally reading a 'bookTok' or erotica book for fun.
With that being said, I'm a bit confused with the demands of some anons in this thread, and it does feel a bit like pearlclutching. Do you want women to not be able to publish erotica? Or for it to not have cartoon covers? Or for TikTok to be more age restricted? Or for an age warning on novels? (I could get behind that last one.)
Because a lot of anons in this thread feel kind of like, "raa raa raa, women write horny garbage sometimes just like men do and that makes me angry!"
I can 100% guarantee you 'serious' literature is being published every day by women and it will continue to be published, get your book recommendations from somewhere other than TikTok if you wanna find it.(blogposting)
No. 1959400
>>1959397Yeah, I think that's a fair wish, we have it for video games and movies.
>>1959398Same as anon above, that's reasonable, and I guess it could be 2 or 3 anons who are posting about the state of women's literature. It just feels like some posters are upset that women are publishing erotica, that it's discussed online, or that sometimes the erotica has themes they don't like.
If anyone is curious about why some women would dare to read
problematic erotica, here's my explanation which is somewhat blogposty:
Even if you're in a good relationship irl, or a relatively morally upright, law-abiding person irl, sometimes literature is a fun place to explore things we have no interest in doing irl. Yes, sometimes that means… reading about sex with a vampire, pirate, the boss of your company, your brother's best friend, or your pick of male tropes. Sometimes you feel curious about what it'd be like to date someone possessive or powerful, even if you have no intention of doing that irl. Sometimes things that wouldn't be cool irl happen but it's okay because it's literature and you're an adult woman. Not everyone who reads murder mysteries wants to experience a local murder. No. 1959403
>>1959400It’s fair to criticize book trends that promote
abusive relationships like they’re titillating and sexy. Your spoiler is very “if women like it then you cannot criticize it!!!1!” libfem bullshit. You can read that slop if you want, no one’s gonna come to your house and burn your “Tall Brooding Man Rapes Me Every Day When I Go to Wash My Clothes in The River” porn book. But we’re allowed to criticize it and voice concern for the young impressionable audiences reading it.

>>1959400>Sometimes things that wouldn't be cool irl happen but it's okay because it's literature and you're an adult woman. Not everyone who reads murder mysteries wants to experience a local murder.False comparison. Murder mysteries are not written to have readers to self-insert as the murder

Including an old warrior and a 5 year old child who (I'm paraphrasing) "struggles a bit, and then surrenders". I always found it gross but because it was the only line in the book sort of ignored it. But knowing what MZB did to her own daughter I couldn't see that book the same way anymore. I got rid of it

>>1959417>Including an old warrior and a 5 year old child who (I'm paraphrasing) "struggles a bit, and then surrenders"Reminds me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and One Hundred Years of Incest and Pedophilia. That book gave me such a yucky feeling with the way he describes a prebubescent child cringing from pain and sweating while struggling to fit an adult man's penis inside her already in the first 30 pages. It's crazy to think that this man won a Nobel prize. Another one of his short stories also features a 90+ year old man whose biggest dream is to rape a prepubescent virgin girl child. He's one of the writers I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out was an actual pedophile.

>>1959410>Erotica writers aren't promoting abuseHow is it not promoting abuse to market a book full of sexualized rape scenes as a normal sexy romance to teen girls? Media does in fact influence society, I don’t know if you’ve noticed. Or are you one of those people who thinks getting off to pedophillic media (especially when spun as a love story)
is fine and it’s totally okay to have those floating around and consumed? Do you deny that it can have a grooming effect on children who see that? And if you don’t deny any of that, then why is it okay to publish porn books about women being abused spun as a love story? Why do you assume it does not play a part in normalizing violence in women’s relationships? Ask yourself why you value women’s well being so little.

>>1959434>marking to teen girls >grooming effect on children There's your problem. The problem is not adult women reading erotica, however unsavoury and
problematic you might find. The problem is children reading it. This is the only problem worth discussing ITT on the subject. Books should have age restrictions the same way as films and video games do, and the real problem is that any teen girl can pick up an explicit erotica novel from a Target shelf and check it out at the counter with her own money.
As it comes to adult women's wellbeings, you obviously don't care about them at all if you think that they are all impressionable adult retards for whom rose-tinted wish-fulfillment erotic fiction normalizes IRL
abusive relationships. Gee, couldn't it be IRL men and the unpunished violence they commit against women every single day that normalizes violence against women? No, it can't be. Someone save those poor brain-dead womenchildren from the big bad terrible books!
There's also something in democratic societies called free speech, sadly. Which means the freedom to express ideas even if they might be uncomfortable, displeasing, disgusting or outright revolting to others. And that covers art too, by the way. Like it or not the right to write or read or not write or not read erotica is protected by your constitution. Because of arguments like yours.

It will never be okay to engage in sexual relationships with a child.
That being said, I don't think there are any mainstream books or erotica that glorify actual child abuse?
Most mainstream books I've seen that feature child abuse (e.g. My Dark Vanessa) portray it as a tragedy, or cautionary tale.
You couuuuld argue that in Twilight, a 100+ year old vampire gets with a 17 year old girl or whatever, but that one clearly has an unrealistic setup, where the vampire has a young adult's body and, for whatever reason, wants to enroll in high school.

She must be shaking in her grave though at the AMC adaptation of Interview with the vampire. She also harassed, threatened and doxxed fanfiction writers all throughout her career. speaking of authors, Harlan Ellison though not a rapist, had a reputation for being a violence and vindictive man who would form of personal vendettas against people who slighted him. Here's an example, he got expelled from college after punching a professor who had told him he'd never amount to anything. Afterwards, he found fame in writing. He would send that professor a copy of every single story he published and let him know how much money he earned from it. He would also help minority creators (most famously, Octavia Butler) get their footing in the literary scene. However, he would call people slurs in the middle of a conversation if he was angry enough.

The publisher edits, chooses cover and the manner it's advertised. YA books traditionally were not porny and just had a little romance. Adult books are a free for all but if you're writing adult fiction the author definitely doesn't envision children reading it, and in a bookstore or library kids shouldn't be browsing those sections. >>1960185What aggravates me most about the AAP obsession with Achilles is that they fail to understand his character on the most fundamental level. He's a selfish prick who puts his pride before the lives of his allies. Basically, Agamemnon insulted Achilles' honor by kidnapping Briseis, a slave whom Achilles had "won" in battle. Achilles throws a hissy fit and tells his army to sit around and do nothing while the other Greeks are losing the war. Achilles still refuses to fight, but eventually allows Patroclus to pretend to be him and lead the Myrmidons against Troy. Patroclus defeats Sarpedon, but is killed by Hector and Achilles goes apeshit. He personally kills a shitload of people, including Hector, whose corpse he desecrates. By the way, it's sometimes argued that Hector is the real hero of the Iliad because he was a level-headed family man; he wanted to make a peace agreement, but Achilles just killed him.
I don't doubt that Achilles and Patroclus were lovers. Even Shakespeare viewed them that way. But Achilles was not noble, we was not a soft gay boi uwu. He knocked a girl up (when he was in drag on a female-only island no less) and abandoned her, screwed up the seige of Troy over his fight with Agamemnon, and went on a killing spree when he indirectly caused Patroclus's death. Also his son grew up to be an even worse murderous psycho who murdered Hector's young son in front of his wife. Achilles is a douchebag, that's what makes him an interesting character. But Tumblr Iliad fanfic like that book completely strips him of those qualities and woobifies him.
Also most of the characters in the Iliad aren't gods. Achilles is only part god; his mom is a nymph and his great-grandmother on his dad's side is a half-human daughter of Zeus. Same goes for Patroclus; he's mostly human, but Zeus is his great-grandfather. A lot of these heroes are indirectly related to Zeus because he stuck his dick in everything, but they aren't gods in the traditional sense.

Another day another mediocre author (or in this case it's an aspiring author who has completely tanked any chance at getting an agent) demanding no one rate any book lower than 3-stars. She deleted her account and went into hiding after getting heat from booktok because she said that anyone who rates a book 3-stars or less is an asshole because of how hard it is to write a book.
Idk how or why people with such thin skin decide they want to become authors and work in publishing when it inevitably entails someone not liking your work. Also 120K words in 3-4 months and a story that revolves around tropes definitely screams 5-star quality kek

none of them understand that literary critique isn't for the authors, it's not meant to personally upset them, it's not gratuitous hate. it's for the readers.
i guess it's another symptome of the fanfic-isation of literature, the "don't like don't read!!1!" attitude. it's ok when you're a 12 year old writing songfics, not as a professional author. inability to stand criticism is a lolcow trait.

>older man and young woman/underage girl relationships/sex constantly appears
>lots of rape (mostly just mentioned not explicitly written however some are), including underage girls
>when written from female characters' perspectives (who are often young women/underage) these characters are almost always super horny and want to bang older men
>nearly everyone wants to bang/rape ciri (even women)
i mean its clear he has a fetish for young woman/girl and older man otherwise why would it appear in nearly every single book

>>1959627Not really cow-ish but Alice Sheldon was quite a something, she was a sci-fi short story writer who came from an old money intellectual family, she served in WW2 as an intelligence officer and met her husband Huntington Sheldon (who would later become the director of the CIA) after being discharged she started writing and used a male psedyunomyn and most of her stories often featured how horrible men and male society were like, all the while she was being praised for it by male authors and fans for talking about the "dark side of humanity" and also praised for her realism cause of her military experience.
Both she and her husband had numerous affairs. She liked the idea of women but didn't have sexual relationships with them, instead she had "intellectual crushes" on them. Despite everything, they genuinely liked each other and decided not to have children. When her husband went blind, they made the decision to enter into a suicide pact so that neither would have to mourn the other. years later, she confided in her attorney, wrote a will and testament, shot her husband, and then herself. They were found hand in hand in their bed, with their brains blown out. It was a very strange relationship

>>1960724Sapkowski is a mega-cow. It's a shame the universe that he created is sadly required reading to play The Witcher 3. Some of the stuff in the book series especially in the short stories was one of the most misogynistic, incel-tier writing I've ever read. Even the Ciri business with the rapist lesbian towards the end pissed me off so bad, it's a blessing CDPR fixed the storyline and you get the choice in tw3 to say it was all a dumb mistake.
But it's not the only thing CDPR fixed about his writing either. Spoiler for the books
Ciri's father (and another guy) wants to impregnate her and even marries a lookalike he passes off as Ciri, who I think is even younger than Ciri at around 12 or 14, so he can swap her with the real one when he captures her and make her his wife/impregnate her. CDPR completely retcons this and the only mention of this other girl is in a very short note at the end of the game and for that they're based. They also retconned the fact that the promised one or whatever wasn't Ciri but Ciri's child (hence everyone wanting to impregnate her) to it being Ciri herself, which was an enormous QoL improvement. On the other hand the witcher books are so misogynistic when it comes to the sorceresses that it wraps around and manages to make them very compelling characters, surprisingly. Like they are such comically "evil" women in this mind of this incel
Yennefer's "a beautiful woman with the cold eyes of an ugly woman" towards the middle of the story they actually become strong female characters with real agency, ambition and personal agenda. Sometimes. Triss

he then tried to sue when the games became super successful and it was settled out of court
he claims the games irreparably harmed his sales as 'serious fantasty readers now ignore it' and he says it gets put in the video game section of bookshops
didnt really care about date continuity, with some stories taking place 10 years before datewise but characters refered to them as happenning 15 years before, stuff like that
didnt have map for the setting or any geogrphic consitency, cd project red had to make one for the first game based on some loose sketches by one of the international translators of the books

She was one of the first open feminist lesbian authors and poets, she came from a wealthy Jewish family. Stein's homes were basically the "hangout area" for some of the most influential Western authors and poets of the 20th century. She was close to Ernest Hemingway, and she was made the godmother of his son. So far, it sounds normal, but before and after WW2, she had open Fascist admiration/sympathies. She endorsed Franco during the Spanish Civil War and most damningly, she collaborated with the Vichy Regime during the German occupation. Now, it would be one thing if she was doing this for the sake of her safety, but she continued to admire the head of the collaborationist regime Philippe Pétain after the war. also despite being Jewish she did hate Jewish men above all else, and thought Catholicism was an aesthetically perfect faith. Stein spent the last years of life translating Petain's speeches into English.

I am law illiterate. What did Xiran do that warranted a lawsuit? Did she break a contract and talk about something she wasn't allowed to on Twitter or something? And if her publisher is suing her, how can she expect to have her book still published later by that same publisher? I assume a lawsuit would imply all bridges are burned.

Apparently this one works for Azantian Literary Agency. I had no idea how the publishing world worked before this, but apparently they aren’t employed by the publishing house, but serve as a middle man for the writer and send their work around to editors that might pick it up. >>1961511> thought they’d be looking for things that fit market trends or something.Based on my limited knowledge of literary agents, this is correct. Professional literary agents look for novels that editors at publishing houses are looking for and stuff that's popular. And if a novel comes in that they love in believe in, they will try to sell it, even if the novel is not on trend or what is popular at publishing houses right now. I think they do specialize in genres, but specializing in tropes is crazy. Keir is using her job as literary agent to get fanfic written to her tastes, and hoping it will sell to a publisher. dnd is responsible for a lot of it as many authors have used it’s monsters as a template, what dnd and these authors do is take a name from an already established fictional or folkloric monster than give it to a completely different monster that only shares one or two things in commom (like being aquatic or being big)
why is it so hard for authors to just come up with a new names for new creatures rather than just recycle the same names
in some cases it has been very controversial when used for non-western creatures like the big debate around the wendigo where the pop culture version is very different to the version found in the native american cultures where it originates, I remember jk rowling faced some controversy for this

>>1961826God, I remember a Tumblr thread about this. The evolution of the perception of orcs in fantasy works. In Tolkien's works, orcs were originally depicted as malformed humans. In D&D, which drew superficial inspiration from Tolkien's setting, orcs were made a little more menacing by giving them slightly more human-like qualities. However, it was actually British games-workshop that took orcs to an even more extreme level by portraying their personalities, speech, and language as akin to football hooligans and skinheads. This depiction would become the basis for all orcs in fiction. Throughout all of this, there wasn't any sort of African or Asian influence upon them.

>>1961826Yeah- fantasy can be such a cool and creative genre that can explore all kinds of ideas and high concepts, but most stuff (that's easy to find, at least) will be too caught up in following its subgenre tropes and cliches (whether they're epic high fantasy or romantasy's) to actually try anything all that interesting or unique. I don't mind that much of the fantastical aspects of the genre comes from folklore etc, what does bother me is when newer authors just regurgitate the authors they read without putting a new spin on things or doing research themselves- you're spot on with dnd being a lot of people's primary source for some of these elements, and it sucks. GoT/asoiaf's popularity has also stifled the genre in a way that reminds me of that period in videogames where everything had to be gritty and realistic and brown kek
>wendigosI can't remember anything about JKR to do with them, but I'm sure if anything of hers even alludes to one she's been attacked over it. Are there any other monsters that will attract as much negative attention to you for drawing/writing one as a wendigo?
>>1961838The continental drift from Tolkien's conceptualisation of various fantasy critters into the modern 'standard versions' is pretty interesting tbh. I mostly noticed it with elves, as I read a lot of Tolkien clones that dated from the 70s to 2000s when I was a kid and got to basically read their 'evolution' into what they're seen as now. I'm so tired of the "orcs are racist caricatures of black people!!!" crowd though, they kick up so much drama while sounding racist themselves.
No. 1961849
>>1961838>In Tolkien's works, orcs were originally depicted as malformed humans. Tolkien had problems with orcs because he depicted them as purely evil, but he hated the implications of that, so his origin for them varied. These three appeared in his novels:
1) Created from stone
2) Made in mockery of Elves
3) Made from corrupted Elves
These three were just in his writings about Middle Earth and unfinisthed stories he started after he finished the books:
4) Soulless animals - beasts with the capacity for speech, like parrots, but without souls. Morgoth would have deformed them to resemble the Children of Ilúvatar in a blasphemous mockery and taught them to speak.
5) Orcs come from corrupted men and elves.
6) Orcs are corrupted men. This was the last one he came up with in his later years and allowed him to avoid the orcs being purely evil instead they are evil because corrupted by Morgoth and they were taught that humans and elves are evil and terrible. Now they were a tragedy.
Anyway, the point is Tolkien knew from jump that evil because evil orcs was a problem and he struggled with it for years. But DnD and, lazy fantasy authors after him, took the evil cause evil orc trope and ran with it. Nobody was inspired to do research, and make up their world and monsters, like Tolkien did, instead they just stole his monsters. And then later authors had the gall to be all "wait…evil by nature orcs is just wrong." acting like that's some idea they came up.

The evil races remained both evil and races until the mid 200s when virtue signalling and pseudo-analysis like yours became the new style.
So now we've had entire fucking spergs by the community over shit that wasn't a problem for so long because
it's fucking fantasy, not the real world.
It was meant to be an escape from all this moralising and shit. Not let's create an analogue of it. And Tolkien is just a shit example. I tried reading his books at 13 or 14, being excited after hearing all of that how good The Witcher series is, all the praise, cult status here and so on. But I was disappointed.
I only read the first book about Witcher (collection of short stories). Finished but felt like I don't want the rest of the series.
There was a story where
Witcher comes across some man who was cursed to look like some beast (?). It is revealed that he was cursed by some priestess he was forced to rape by other men - I don't remember the full story. But it made me angry how he didn't seem to show any protest after being told to rape her. She cursed him for that, maybe during the act. I was always mad how this story is somehow written in a way that made me think the author intends to make reader sympathise with the rapist scumbag. Especially that the topic of sexual abuse always horried me, even more when I was younger.
About the other things, I heard apologists saying that this creepy sex stuff is "realistic", as the world is modeled after patriarchal medieval era but I don't care, some things are red flags anyway. Especially the stuff with minors which I didn't get to yet after one book.

>>1962506It's a common excuse by the historically illiterate so that they can justify adding edge to their stories because they're cowards who think fantasy without those things cannot be mature or deep or interesting. It would actually be much more interesting for things like rape to occur in a story and have any of those punishments you listed, rather than how it usually goes unheeded (and is used as angst fuel for the male lead/used to make him the better option for the female lead because he doesn't rape or sexually assault people). Another example of this is with the female lead of The Painted Man, as though it's a mild example as far as this trope/cliche goes, it still annoys me that the character was essentially built to be raped (the book also has a strong fixation with virginity and pregnancy), which you can catch wind of when she's first introduced in the story at age 13. Gross.
These kinds of authors will never be the next Tolkien because he wasn't an angry, cynical little pissant towards humanity, and didn't sit at his typewriter writing up a nasty little power fantasy. Tolkien has his faults, but at least his work isn't bitter or cruel (there's nothing wrong with dark fantasy either btw, but this stuff is usually pushed as being 'realistic' rather than dark/grimdark).

Honestly, males have no business writing about women being raped in the first place. It's like a fish writing about how it feels like to be a bird.
Terry Pratchett is also okay though as far as moid writers go, probably because he keeps everything relatively light-hearted and episodic.

>>1962603>If I had to choose between women being underrepresented and women constantly being raped for the titillation of moid readers, I'll pick the former every time.100% agree. It's honestly never bothered me to have a story centered around war and violence with only males in it. Males do not know how to write about rape in any meaningful way, it's either porn for themselves or there for shock value with no regards to how it affects women (both the characters and the readers).
I recently read the debut fantasy novel of a local writer and it was so shit I didn't finish it. What got me to quit was him writing a line like "the bad guys invaded and destroyed the whole town, and also they raped all the women." There was literally no reason to add that last part, it didn't affect the story in any way other than immediately set the world up as one in which women in particular get to suffer more sexual violence from men. You know damn well men ignore the fact that men also rape other men in war, they'd never add anything so gay into their books.

And yet retards have still ruined them. Of course the gendies have fixated on Cheery as a 'trans icon' because her story is literally about how dwarf women are expected to look and behave indistinguishably from dwarf men, and being visibly seen as a woman is shocking, therefore she must be a brave and stunning tranny. She's not a man who make skirt go spinny, she's a woman who wants to be taken seriously regardless of her gender, her stories are literally about women's liberation. Not about transitioning because of a fetish or because you don't fit the status quo.

>>1962485>>1962603There was a twitter thread that discussed this topic, but unfortunately, I can't seem to find it. In the past, most fantasy and sci-fi stories were written by people who lived in the era and had a good understanding of the world. For example, H.G. Wells wrote War of the Worlds as a critique of Darwinism, and the author of Conan was a sharecropper. These writers had rich life experiences and were influenced by history and scientific advancements that they would read and research about. However, during the 'New-wave of science fiction' starting from the 60's, stories began to be written by people who were disconnected from the context and approached their works as a form of escapism. Some men, who read Tolkien for instance, completely missed the Christian symbolism and solely viewed it from a fantasy escapist perspective(picrel). Even then, these writers were still influenced by the real world, cause they had to live in the world. But now, the situation is worse than ever. We have fiction that lacks any form of complexity. As another nonna on a different thread put it, it's like a 'bootleg of a bootleg, based on a video game, which itself iwas based on common fantasy tropes'

Xiran whether she intended or not, has created an entire genre of "historical reimaginations". While there were already books about mythological reimaging's (primarily Greek), we are now witnessing the emergence of books like Iron Widow, that nominally take real historical figures and transform them into fan-fiction OCs, often authored by people who are sheltered, passive, and express ideas of sex and romance come from fan-fiction. For instance, 'She Who Became the Sun' which envisions the founder of the Ming Dynasty as non-binary queer woman
and I posted this already book thread but it fits here just as much, there is absolutely no reason for any of the characters to be "historical figures" because they aren't. like most historians, whether they like her or not, agree that Wu Zetian was smart and patient. She waited and kept a low profile for years, making important allies who would support her. Her paternal clan and the emerging Buddhists in China. She used religion and appealed to the sensibilities of the nobility. Her alleged ruthlessness is a matter of debate; however, even in the most critical accounts, she was never foolish about it. She never killed anyone whose death would cause a backlash against her or create a potential threat. On the other hand, Xirna's Zetian murders her entire family in the end and also kills Gao's dad and his criminal syndicate, who wanted to ally with her. Li Shimin also has a weird characterization. He was enlightened in some ways (very humble by emperor standards), but also brutal as hell. He murdered his brothers to take power. she tried to add that, but instead of killing his brothers for power, she just made her Li Shimin murder his brothers, who were irredeemable rapists that he had to kill for being awful rapists. Additionally, there's a big deal about him being half-Rongdi, but in ancient China, race was more understood through cultural backgrounds. Despite the real Li Shimin having Turkic ancestry, he would never been judged for it, plenty of emperors came from that background, as long as they were culturally Chinese and Confucian, it wouldn't be an issue.

>>1963270sage for slight blog post but i think sometimes historical "reimaginings" can be done well if the person is passionate about history.(June Hur writes these types of books and they were actually very well received in korea.)
I don't think being inspired by a historical figure is detrimental to a book, specially fantasy since it can provide a grounded background, though it is a little funny that The Poppy War's main character is a genderswapped Mao.

>>1963280Just curious anon do you like the Poppy War? (Wasn't sure if that's what you meant by your post)
Because I find Kuang's work to be incredibly immature and heavy handed at best.
Poppy War read like YA trying to mature by hamfisting in gratuitous graphic violence and deflecting any criticism of the book with "its the reality of war!!11!"
The fact that the author is Chinese American apparently makes it A-Okay for her to essentially copy and paste actual atrocities from the Nanjing Massacre wikipedia page into her badly written fantasy story.
Sorry for possible derail but I really hated that book.
I was similarly disappointed with Babel even though I think it was a step above Poppy War in quality and maturity.

The actual bestsellers are trashy romance/light reading books women read on their holidays, and children's books primarily. The rest of sales are travel guides, school text books, and self help/spirituality books (a very small number of famous titles for the latter) plus movie tie ins get a temporary boost. nyt bestsellers are bought (you can either rig it by preordering your own book in droves, because most books sell so badly it's easy to be the bestseller this way) or simply paying for the spot on the shelf which happens in some major bookshops.
Even the most famous, highest selling books like Harry Potter only really sold copies on release day, and a trickle after that.
I feel like fiction authors somehow know zero of this actual sales data and hence why they are so up their own asses? Do their publishers lie to them or what? >i'm 14 and this is deep speaking of nov 9 the story is so shit but everyone just pretends that it's just so deep and nobody understands it.
to those who are curious- nov 9 is a story about a perv who tricks a house fire
victim into falling in love with him. said perv is a wannabe poet/screenwriter or something, who at some point loses a brother in an accident and brother's pregnant wife begs him to marry her (so that the child would have a father growing up i guess- incest, fatherless children in distress, abuse of women and pregnancy are coho's kinks. if you ever read any story of hers one of (if not all of them) will be mentioned)
the main premise of the story is that the two (benton and fallon (the girl)) only meet on nov 9 every year. they don't keep in touch in any other way. some shit happens and it turns out that benton was the one that set fallon's house on fire and nearly killed her. she understandably hates him until her own mother begs her to talk to him to understand why he did it. and it ends with them in love and happy. men are never wrong in coho's world and women are nothing but baby making machines.
(also i don't call him a perv for no reason- he's constantly written as coom brain who does nothing but undress fallon in his mind everytime he sees her).
sorry for the long post but it boils my blood that something this shit gets published and sells millions of copies. booktok tricked me into coho and i will never forgive it…

sage for zero milk, but I swear Gillian Flynn (the writer of Gone Girl) is going to get involved in some controversy or is already a potential cow. I got obsessed with her after watching Gone Girl, and I wanted to read her other stuff. and most of it was kind of weirdly sexual and kinda sexist, I tried to read Dark Places, but my god, the main character mentions how "uwu small" she is and her boobs every page. Then I read The Grown Up, which opened with picrel. I felt I was too much of an idiot to understand her work and that there was some subtlety to her writing that I wasn't getting. So I learned she used to review films, and I read some of those and I read some of those and she has the personality of a pretentious coomer, constantly whining about the lack of sexuality in media these days, and how awful is is. All that, along with her awful series Utopia, made me lose all respect for her.

For me, it's also the ability to have women who are bad characters … the one thing that really frustrates me is this idea that women are innately good, innately nurturing. In literature, they can be dismissably bad – trampy, vampy, bitchy types – but there's still a big pushback against the idea that women can be just pragmatically evil, bad and selfish … I don't write psycho bitches. The psycho bitch is just crazy – she has no motive, and so she's a dismissible person because of her psycho-bitchiness.">Writing on her website, she concedes that hers is "not a particularly flattering portrait of women, [but that's] fine by me. Isn't it time to acknowledge the ugly side? I've grown quite weary of the spunky heroines, brave rape victims, soul-searching fashionistas that stock so many books. I particularly mourn the lack of female villains." It should probably be added that her lurid plots make no claim to social realism: to interpret her evil female characters as somehow representative of their real-life gender, you must willfully overlook hundreds of pages of other people and events that you'd almost certainly never encounter in reality, either. When I was a teen on tumblr John Green was huge because of his youtube channel (which I was a big fan of at the time) so I got memed into thinking his books were great. I read The fault in our stars and thought it kinda sucked but that I must be wrong, read Looking for Alaska and hated it, read Will Grayson, Will Grayson and hated that one too, finally started reading Paper towns and quickly gave up because of course it fucking sucked too. All his books have flat boring characters and/or manic pixie dream girls for the awkward male lead to get his dick hard to. I'm especially grossed out he made me read a scene of a (teen) girl asking to suck the main characters dick while said character wasn't into her and the entire book is about him thirsting over a manic pixie girl instead. Couldn't look at the youtube channel the same after that and quickly fell off.

>>1974774>>1974618I actually did read the book, and she's not addressing the issues of colonialism and white supremacy. It's very obvious that her frame of reference is crime movies set in 1920s Shanghai, and those can be fun settings, but they can't work when the story tries to be serious. the book portrays Chinese cities not being run by white colonial officials and businessmen but by a bunch of white gangs, which is fucking retarded.
but that allegory falls apart when Roma's gang joins her, and the story delves into a bizarre type of orientalism, where Russians are suddenly referred to as "fellow Asians." and bad as the colonial allegory is, the issue of workers' rights is even worse. The only excuse provided is that "communists will take over," which is presented as a nebulous threat.
I feel it should be obvious, that the 1920's Shanghai wasn't a great place to be if you weren't rich. It was filled with exploitation and mass abuse, gangs did run cities and they were opening up brothels and factories with inhuman working condition, it's just a very bad book.

victim here is that she thinks Sarah is jealous over how much her unreleased fantasy book with similar themes as TGUWG was acquired for compared to her own (rumors are Molly’s duology sold for ~500K) and that Molly doesn’t deserve all the promotion she’s getting so she and her sister are trying to tank Molly’s career with false allegations. >>1974595>>1974921Sorry to samefag, but I’ll have to post a couple times to get all this documentd but here is some of the proof the reviewer presented against Molly. I feel like Molly was kind of jumping to conclusions, making out a single reviewer into some big bully trying to drag her name through the mud because she’s connected to an author who wrote a similar book and maybe subtweeted her is a big leap. It’s mentioned multiple times that she has “trauma” and “anxiety” over reviews after the whole Cait Corraine incident so it could just be that she was being overly paranoid and connecting dots where they didn’t really exist. The sisters seem to be overexaggerating a bit though, Molly knowing the reviewers private account and posting a screenshot isn’t really doxing tbh. Again, just messy unneeded drama from debut authors who are ruining their own careers before they’ve even made a name for themselves. >>1974963>Please tell me her book flopped. How can anyone read and enjoy this in earnest?I hate to tell you this but it sold pretty well and was even popular on Tumblr and TikTok at the time. It was also released during the HK protests, when there was a strong anti-CCP sentiment. and in the second half of the book, the communists are portrayed as the real bad guys. but I didn't see it being discussed, more-so people drooled over the hot Russian guy and the female MC, whom they could self-insert as.
It's actually an interesting time capsule, because despite being released just 4 years ago, it still reflects the late 2010s, a more innocent time. It's not the worst thing in the world; it just tried to handle themes the author didn't have the maturity or knowledge to handle.

Looks like what seems to be the Chinese equivalent of poltards have caught wind of the drama surrounding Molly Chang. The harassment she's getting mostly seems to be coming from accounts with stuff like "Chinese supremacist", "MRAsian" and incel rhetoric in their bios. They claim they're pissed about her taking inspiration from Unit 731 but it seems like what they're actually seething over is that the romance in the book is between a white guy and an asian woman

>>1974786>>1974618Honestly, fuck her, So 2 years back, there was this minor author rebcca mix, who wrote a fairly mediocre YA book called "The One's we Burn" The book is set in a world where witches are real and oppressed group. It's standard racism bad allegory with supernatural creatures. Chloe Gong shared a particular Goodreads review that went viral. The review didn't critique the quality of the book but rather ranted about how the allegory itself was racist, this was near the tail end of the BLM riots. so the author faced death threats, her book was removed and ultimately she to quit social media.
Only much later did it become apparent that it was blown way out of proportion. the whole controversy stated cause there were two rich black characters portrayed as evil in a setting that was vaguely medieval Europe, but also incredibly diverse. As a result these morons were convinced that it was setting up a narrative of "reverse racism" where white people are oppressed and it was not inclusive of the experiences of POCs.

I posted this before but it fits best here. Regardless of how you feel about either Riordan and JK Rowling, there's this trend in YA literature to recreate their successes with more diverse characters/setting. 'Harry Potter/Percy Jackson but' books - PJ but based on Indian mythology, HP but set in a Korean boarding school, PJ but based on African American mythology e.t.c. They all get hyped on BookTok. The first book does okay, and two more sequels are ordered, but literally no one cares because everyone only pretended to like the fist one. They never understand what made Harry Potter and Percy Jackson good in the first place. They only take surface-level tropes and try to apply them to their POC and/or queer characters, and they think they deserve an equal amount of fame, both Harry Potter and Percy Jackson didn't come from this mindset. The genres JK Rowling was most familiar with were mysteries and thrillers, same with Rick Riordan. When his dyslexic son showed interest in Greek mythology, he wrote a book for him by doing her own research on greek mythology and also trying to make it fun for his other children.

and idk, while these people are obviously extreme morons it also feels like this kind of twitter induced psychosis is a result of how information is presented on social media, where the only thing that matters is views and engagement and the content is basically irrelevant, so a video of an actual child getting blown up by a bomb and a post about how a fictional character in a romance slop series is "

And that's all that's needed to get 1 billion Muslims to condemn it. On the Western side, it's about how "queer/black Palestinians are also suffering" or "X invention was actually made by a Palestinians somehow." Again This type of activism is mostly used for American minorities and gay people. Seeing it applied to anyone outside those groups in an actual ethnic cleansing situation, is uncanny.

and it's not that weird that so many women choose to stay in the YA genre when moving on to more grown up genres means that you either have to read incredibly misogynistic schlock (because the adult fantasy/scifi genre is dominated by moids) or pseudo deep ruminations about adult women wanting to have babies, having had babies, or wondering if they should have babies. if these two are the main choices i'd stay within the confines of "18-25 year old female protagonist saves the world" too.

The general dynamics were different too because people were attempting to push back against SWJ arguments in a way that would be unimaginable now and causing an internet fight, so it was less of a pile-up on a single person deemed to have committed the sin of impure thought that now must be mercilessly purged, while everyone else look on, clap and pray that they wouldn't be chosen next. People also spent magnitudes less time being online and cared less, the bastardization of theories from American identity studies hadn't been refined into the weapon for witch hunts it is today, and the idea that the prime goal of YA literature should be to fight SWJ culture wars was simply not a thing.

She didn't get dropped by her agent, her work is praised by both critics and the general public, and she actually writes the books she's been paid to write. No matter how much of a nepo cow she is, or how annoying she is, she does her job and brings in money. God forbid Xiran does her job and writes her fucking book instead of shitting herself online over some retarded non-issue.

The problem I had with this was that all her stories of her past relationships scream bpd, as well as her regular meltdowns in front of staff at the mental hospital. But seriously this is 100% his fault for choosing AGAIN one of his buddies to direct the adaptation of his (also unfinished) book. It's the second time he gets kicked out of the writer's room at HBO which says something either about him or the people he picked. He chose those two lolcows Dumb&Dumber just because they could read theory boards which GRRM never considered because he is a fat boomer who refuses to use modern technology and thus went gaga at their genius, instead of evaluating them professionally. That sure did work out for him until it didn't. And now again he hires one of his Hollywood buddies who apparently does not respect him or his work, thinks he's better than him and goes around saying that Fire and Blood is "Master propaganda" like a total idiot just so he can scrap everything the book does right to transform it into his ultimate ultra misogynistic lesbian fetishist fantasy which, hilariously, is also a bad show.
None of this would have happened if GRRM wasn't incompetent and incapable of finishing a story. If he finished a SINGLE one of his ASOIAF stories in 10 years or so we could have gotten a new adaptation of GOT and F&B with many more to come for the rest of existence, just like Tolkien. But that's only possible if the work is completed. As things stand now this total shitshow is going to be his legacy and he's starting to seethe about it, and I dare say he deserves it.

I've always liked the channel "unresolved textual tension" on youtube but lately they've gone too… gross. One host said "not all conservatives are bad, i'm fine with economic conservatives for example" prompting the other two to say that, no, ALL conservatives are bad actually.
I'm not even close to conservative in my views but to make such an idiotic statement that one political side is objectively bad in all cases (and implying that the other is the good one in all cases) proves how narrow minded they really are. Promoting political hate and divide is so tiring to begin with, no wonder their own leftist side is so full of hate they try to murder political people in the open. And the fact that the first host was the only one to have an open mind and they shot her down for it was so gross to see.
And of course they also suddenly start talking about how oppressed trans people are, and lo and behold the next book review is all about them troonz. I'm so tired of the mindless repeating of "poor rapist troons, evil womb-haver femnazis are oppressing them!!!" and when it's from a book review channel I honestly expected them to be more well researched on a topic before repeating lies like that.

I'm tinfoling here but because they've been mentioned on different lc threads a couple of times semi-recently but I suspect some of them lurk and now went public TRA to distance themselves from these terfy associations. besides, the reason adults being into YA is a 'problem' is because they've skewed YA to cater more to them than its target demographic, not necessarily because adults shouldn't be consuming simpler media aimed at younger audiences (tbh a children's book like Howl's Moving Castle probably has more going for it than a lot of YA/romantasy).

I'm not exaggerating, and it's depressing to see it. I have to read reviews of authors self-publishing online to find non-porn fantasy or sci-fi, and what's even more tragic is that the more I avoid female authors the less porn I get to the point that I often don't even click if the author is female now to avoid disappointment.
Not only that but any time you try to vent about it you get 2 reactions, which is like here "that never happens, you're exaggerating, there aren't even porn in books" or they try to shame you for not being into porn like "oh you can't handle some steam, maybe go read kids books then". I don't want that. I don't care if other women want to read that shit, I care that I was promised one book and got another one with a bunch of crap that I wasn't made aware of before borrowing it.
