I used to shoplift sometimes. An ex-friend got me into it and I got hooked on that shit. It was like a self-hatred anxiety thing for me. There was so much anxiety, but so much euphoria after 'beating' the anxiety and dealing with it in such a crashing wave.
I proceeded to get caught with about $700 of Magic the Gathering cards. The chick who caught me openly admitted if I didn't go for that last set of fat packs, I would've gotten away with it.
My justification was they were big box stores. I was 17 and stupid as fuck. I only got out of it via pre-trial intervention and I haven't stolen since. The cops and asset protection people told me I handled it really maturely and they pointed me right to PTI.
It's a fucking shitty thing to do and it always falls back on the employees of the store, not the big guys these people (and younger me) 'wanted' to hit. But the truth is, is it's a greedy, selfish, cheap, euphoric high that goes away by the time you finish your drive home. You just want more shit. You realise you could've gotten more, and you realise your haul was ultimately worthless because it's cheap-ass shit 99% of the time. You get greedier and greedier. You start with $1 trinkets, you move to $5 packs of cards, $35 fat packs, $200 of fat packs and $100 of cheap-ass Wii and PS2 games in bargain bins, $500 of shit, caught.
The worst part about it is that in your head, you begin to not even justify spending money anymore when stealing is so damn easy. Why spend money, when you can just jack that shit? Eventually, the anxiety and ensuing high goes away. It's like smack, except more dangerous in the "you're definitely going to get caught one day" way.
But bragging about it? Fuck that noise. They deserve to be caught. They can cry about it, but they deserve it. Good for you, farmers.

It's fucking sad. A lot of my coworkers have legitimate problems and that $550 bonus in full at the end of every three months (I think, don't really remember if it's 3 or 6) would help them a lot. But if there's a huge amount of shrinkage, guess who it hits? You can donate to all the stupid-ass charities you want, but guess who goes to those charities for whatever they can get? The people you just jacked a $550 bonus from and cut it down to like $400 instead.

Man, after reading this thread in its entirety I'm not sure how to feel about this "lifting" trend.
Having worked retail for five years (worked my last day today at a major clothing retail since I'm graduating with my second degree), I can honestly say that a person lifting one or two small, cheap items (under $30) doesn't bother me. However, stealing $1k of stuff is overkill and grand larceny.
Now, as far as this movement being "anticapitalist," well I think we're all smart enough to know that stealing doesn't change shit and this is clearly a thinly veiled excuse to keep stealing. Selfish capitalism is here to stay in America, and I do admit that it's bad and I have considered moving.
As far as stealing affecting the workers (fiscally, not reprimands like write ups or verbal lectures), well that's a load of crap for major retailers (note my distinction from small retail). Corporate estimates their yearly costs and they specifically account for "shrink" (stealing/damaged items). Obviously they would prefer to not have shrink happen so they can save more money, but they do expect it to happen.
At my store we were -not- allowed to attempt to stop shoplifters even if they were known or blatantly stole in front of us. That was the job for our loss prevention associate (LP) who came around a whopping every 4 months for ONE day. It's safe to say big chain corporate lets stealing happen.
Yes, my pay, benefits, and hours were nonexistant. I'm sure if I asked corporate they would chalk it up to the "economy" or "thieves" but their CEO made and kept their millions. In fact it wasn't too long ago in the news that a CEO for one company took a cut in their pay so their workers got more money. So obviously, in some cases "shrink" is just the red herring thrown to the little people by the bosses to keep them frustrated at someone or something to detract from the real issues.
If I sound slightly bitter about this, it's because I am. Five months ago I successfully stopped a theft of Kors purses via increased "customer servicing" (purses we keep by the door for those pesky shoplifter's conveniences…). My manager, elated at the time, promised me I would be receiving a $25 gift card in the mail from corporate. Well, you would be right to guess I never got it. Although my manager teased me with the prospect every few weeks up until my last day today. "Did you get your card in the mail anon? YOU DIDN'T? Golly gosh I'll email them again son of a gun wouldn't ya know!"
I'm not ashamed to say after not stealing from this company for the years I've worked there, I stole some eye gel ($9.99) and some gel eyeliner ($4.99). I felt entitled, and I kinda am as far as I'm concerned. Technically "they owe me." But these corporate, international retailers don't give a fuck about the common worker. Nobody does.

Made her call her mom, but her mom was out of town so they had to call my friend's parents instead. Stealing friend had to go to court and was stuck at home for 6 months or so. She did not get off easy.
