This is men and empathy.
Unlike a toilet, where shit puddles are an active and easily identifiable detriment to your life, men can move through the world relatively functionally without having to consider women.
This only becomes an issue for men who are in environments where women’s autonomy has a greater effect on their lives. In societies where women are beholden to men, he doesn’t think about what they think. If he does, it’s a recreational activity. Speculation and superstition hold just as much merit as the truth. In societies where ineffective communication with women means you lose opportunities, men with underdeveloped empathy skills are left confused and frustrated. They infrequently realize that the issue is theirs, and not the fault of “illogical” or “malicious” women.
What is substituted for empathy in more pressing times is projection. Philosophers of the past who waxed about “the female condition” certainly included projection in their analysis, but would also conjure fantastical theories the same way they might ponder the cosmos. Theoretical, inconsequential, unbeholden to the creatures they remark upon. Men of today, who are in more ways subject to women, but still lack the capacity to empathize, rely on projection and paranoiac spirals. He has to figure out the creatures who vex him, but lacks the skills required to observe and record them. He is hypersensitive to all the ways in which women impede his prospects (specifically, romantically, since women are required participants), and in his frantic efforts to figure her out, makes a projection of himself with a more uncharitable twist. Ironically, he creates a woman of himself and a man of the woman. This will forever be lost on him, since flipping the script in his mind requires the very empathy he lacks.
This is how you get men stressing over their plight of male objectification in romance novels as they unquestioningly treat women as objects, objects whose intended use is more cruel by several orders of magnitude.
