>>2351942My main resolution is to become as good as my favorite artists. I've seen lots of people say that comparing yourself to others makes you miserable but idc, when I see other artist's beautiful art, it inspires me. I feel like "shit I need to catch up". Sometimes when I feel a little too good about my own art I look at other artists to remind myself I still have a long way to go.

>>2352051>HOW DO YOU FUCKING CALCULATE THE GEOMETRY PHYSICS OF THE LIGHT HITTING THE FACE AND THE SHADOWS LIGHT COOL AND DARK AND EVERYTHINGI just go by rough vibes kek
I mean if a person like me who is into art and who does put a bit of thought into it and I still can't tell exactly what is right or wrong, then the average person won't be able to tell if it's wrong either. My philosophy is "stylization over reality", if it looks cooler when the light hits a certain part perfectly then I will put the light there. I like to compare it to photographers who put lights and reflectors at specific spots to get the exact light they want; even though that would never happen naturally and it's all orchestrated through a half-second flash light it still looks good.

nonny >>2352165>stylization over reality Based and true I’m always scared of people nitpicking my stuff “oh this doesn’t look right and this doesn’t” well it’s a drawing not a real actual representation of what I’m drawing, why do we expect humans to get a correct mirror image of what exists in real life? I’ll look at some more photography, I also have tried to imagine the correct lighting source points but it’s too hard idk I guess you have to get really good at putting tiny little pieces together to make a bigger piece, kind of like painting

>>2352051look around your house, find an object (fruit is a classic and great choice). stare at it. analyse in your head how the light is hitting it, the shadows it casts (draw mental lines to understand their angles), the colours reflected onto it from nearby objects/surfaces. notice its surface texture, what material it is, how the light interacts with that. maybe move it to a new place and think about all this stuff again.
do rendered studies of your object, colour and value-only, with your prior observations in mind. don't make assumptions, make observations.
you can also just wing it, sure, but you'll improve your ability to feel out lighting from imagination just by practising your observation skills (this goes for all aspects of art tbh), let alone if you take the time to do proper studies. if you want your art to have even stylised realism, you first have to pay attention and study the real thing (rendering is so much easier to practice when you have something to guide you). also yeah don't forget you can always tweak things to suit the art more, and bullshit lighting can still look good and intentional if it's clearly a compositional element or adds punches of interest. have fun with it.

>>2351942draw more and get good. i've said this in past threads but my art is so middle school student-ish compared to artists my age, so my plan is to catch up. i've probably drawn more this year than in the past two, for example. and i have no excuse to slack off because i'm a neet with no responsibilities, i'm just insanely depressed.
i do get a little demotivated when my art gains little attention in discord art channels or socmed, but i know i have to get eye-catchingly good in order to get that attention i crave.
>>2354226same. sometimes i'd want to see an ai copy of my art only to see how the machine does it.

>>2351942Finish a short comic and make a few on demand copies of it
I want to get better at drawing backgrounds, both nature, and rooms/buildings. I want to create backgrounds that really tell you about the character/tell a story
Create pieces that have more interactions between multiple parties
Get better at water color. Finsish a certain water color piece
Improve at perspective/foreshortening
All this combined, I really want to create the evocative images I've had in my head for years. Art that transports you to the place you're rendering, and that I hope people other than myself can find both impressive, fun, and beautiful! I've really put myself into a strict hole of what I'm capable of. Only black and white character illustrations, but I realized theres just so much I can't do, and don't fully have the skills for, so I march forward for the first time in ages. Luckily I really enjoy this process. I feel like I'm giving my brain an exercise

Tbh, I think something about only drawing furries for the majority of time you’ve practiced art stagnates you like nothing else. Maybe it’s just drawing similar subjects over and over again? Because I notice furries don’t really draw backgrounds, and the ones they do draw have bad perspective and or lighting. They don’t really draw anything else but anthros either, so maybe that contributes to the issue as well. Does anyone else notice this; or am I insane?

>>2355362>it’s just drawing similar subjects over and over again? It's absolutely this. And this applies to any subgenre of art. Look at moid artists who only draw women with big tits and Keira Knightley faces. Ask them to draw an old woman, or an animal, and they'll choke. The only way to become a better artist, period, is to practice drawing all sorts of stuff: machinery, animals, historical stuff, landscapes, etc. This is why, I think, women artists will eventually beat out men. Because we're not
only drawing stuff just to jerk off to.

>>2355362I don't think its due to drawing the same subject over and over, but the refusal to actually practice fundies and such. Lots of them have a "muh style" mentality and just copy Disney/mediocre artists the way some artists nowadays simpy copy Pinterest tutorials on rendering instead of actually learning.
I follow picrel (@aruurara) just because I love how he uses colors and composition. His art makes me cringe often but he has a good technique, he has shown practiving anatomy before so it's evident he actually puts effort on improving even today. So there are good furfags out there, but your run of the mil warriorcat artist won't be good. I also have a feeling that the ones who want to make cool shit eventually move on making fursuits rather than 2D art.
