I'm watching the NBC pre-show and I absolutely hate the celebrity angle they're trying to pull. I couldn't give a shit about Ariana Grande, Snoop Dog, or John Legend. It's cheapens the idea of the games for me. This is a stage for the everywomen/men who worked their asses off and proved themselves physically. Why take attention off of them for burger celebrities? I don't want to see anyone who isn't an athlete, coach, or some sports professional giving interviews/attention.
And as for the opening ceremonies, I don't get Lady Gaga or Celine Dion either. Why don't the French take pride in their people and show off local talent?

Small off topic but I speak from experience as someone who had four games of the Euro World cup this summer in my city in Currywurstland. The price of a double bedroom on the days of matches was starting at 250€ the night without breakfast and upwards. I work in the tourism industry, I had to advise people to sleep in towns in a 30km radius where the price don't exceed 100€/night. My former dept. leader had some unofficial talks with the Dehoga (the association for the hotel and gastronomy branch) and told us the hotels were not even at full capacity, they were at 60% capacity (which are percentages you get maybe in March here) because the UEFA has blocked contingency in the hotels that only unblocked ten days before the start of the Soccer cup. They were all led to believe they're going to make bank, the real hotels and touristic cities that profited are the ones in that 30km radius around where I live.

And I'm not the only one, there were less people going to the con than usual this year even though it's a huge event, and I heard a lot of potential foreign guests refused to come because it would have been too complicated to organize everything.
>Small off topic but I speak from experience as someone who had four games of the Euro World cup this summer in my city in CurrywurstlandFour games omg I would have been insane, my city hosted it in several years ago and the entire city was a huge mess for weeks as a result. Never again I hope. What you said about hotels happened more or less the same way in Paris, I've seen videos of hotel owners complaining that they have way less costumers than usual because they're in the grey zone that requires QR codes but their prices were insane. It's a disgrace. I mean why should anyone care about the red carpet ceremony that took place an hour before the official opening ceremony, where the majority of these VIPs were not only athletes, but also celebrities from US who have nothing to do with olympics. Shouldn't the retired and world class athletes be celebrated on such occasion?

Some people are now saying that the scene in which the camera zooms out while showing the drag queens and the kid, wasn't the last supper but a painting of a bacchanal.
It's the particular scene, mixed with the moid with his balls out, that has caused the most discussion.

This still pic at least doesn't automatically read "Last Supper" to me, at least not 100%. But perhaps in the actual performance it was obvious & 100% a parody/interpretation.
It did look degenerate and stupid (esp the blue guy), but when will people learn that throwing a temper tantrum about a performance or an art piece (like Piss Jesus) just gives it more attention? The more scandalous, the more attention, and the more money the performers and choreographers will end up getting in their lifetimes. A better approach for a media outlet dealing with shit like this is to cover all the non-degen stuff and stay relatively silent on the rest. They should take a lesson from the weightlifters at the Tokyo Olympics: "No, thank you" is powerful.

As an ex Muslim I'l glad I can shit all over Islam and not be sued or go to jail for it thanks to that, and it makes perfect sense the organizers can make a parody of a famous bible fanart… which didn't even happen in the first place because it's a parody of another painting that represents Greek gods. During the Olympic Games. Which were invented in Ancient Greece. And the singer in that part of the ceremony was dressed as a Greek god, why would a Greek god be in a last supper parody? Is the last supper painting even in a Parisian museum? Christians need to get over themselves for once in their lives.

>>2107200Are you also a French fag nona? I disagree. There were many things that could have been celebrated from our history amd culture without making it a cheap plastic show led by cross dressers (with their balls out…fantastic) or American celebrities. The library scene just proves the person who came up with it has never read a line of Marivaux or what the book he referenced was about. The display of Marie Antoinette was tasteless - a woman who was slandered and unfairly tried then executed - but I guess she's fair game to be mocked because she's a woman (funny how Louis XVI didn't feature too, huh).
That was a tasteless ceremony, imo. The good bits were overshadowed by the bad ones. I still don't get why that emphasis on trannies and drag queens (yay let's center men in womanface, that's what we need). What does they have anything to do with the Olympics??? The whole thing was in poor taste imo and I'm not surprised at the backlash. Doing that on the Seine was stupid, we were there and couldn't see a thing + ended up soaking wet.

>>2108445I liked some parts of the ceremony a lot but I did find it weird that there were such an emphasis on drag queens. Then I remembered that the French version of Ru Paul's tv show is aired on France 2 just like the ceremony was so I assume it played a part in it. And let's be real. Most men involved in art and planning this sort of events are gay to begin with so that doesn't help.
>The display of Marie Antoinette was tasteless - a woman who was slandered and unfairly tried then executed - but I guess she's fair game to be mocked because she's a woman (funny how Louis XVI didn't feature too, huh). It would have made more sense to show both of them but I see it as a detail tbh.

Religious pearl-clutching aside, I feel like people are being pointlessly vile about this ceremony overall. I thought that we were the world capital of hating on everything but maybe we're chill after all, positive comments seem mostly French or middle aged foreigners that lived here at some point. I wiped the dust off my social media accounts just for the olympics expecting to see fun memes and interesting bits of information but all I see is endless whining. And they're being willfully stupid too, ignoring the whole show just because they had to see drag queens for a hot minute so that means everything is bad now. Could it have been better ? Of course. Were there questionable choices ? yes, but I have seen 0 constructive criticism anywhere so far. Was Philippe Katerine's bit cringy ? Absolutely but at the end of the day it's just that, cringy. Yet everyone is screaming over this nothingburger because being mad is just more fun to them I guess. Foreign presenters not explaining shit or even mentioning who is who and why they're here probably didn't help, like I watched a little bit of the NBC version afterwards because I missed the early part and they were really useless.
I was hoping this thread would be a bit more critical but it's just the same empty talking points of muh degeneracy and "a faggot is present, thus your opinion is invalid"
>>2108714I liked it as well. Metal is huge in France and Gojira deserved to be here as a well known band. Since there was a "present meets history" theme it made sense that brutal music and brutal history would be linked for the performance.

>drag queens are from the USA, not France btwThere are drag queens in France even if it started as an American concept, and the French version of Drag Race is broadcasted by France 2. France 2 is also the channel that broadcasted the ceremony so I'm sure they thought it would be a great idea to hire drag queens based on how many people watched the first seasons of Drag Race France, which was a LOT of people iirc. The neighborhood with a lot of gay bars, bookshops, etc. in Paris is also very well known, it's called Le Marais. So it doesn't come out of nowhere at all, regardless of how distasteful it is.

No. 2109101
I just think that most of the performances in the ceremony felt either unfinished/not thought-out properly and thoroughly or not executed well live. If that blue man was supposed to be Dionysus and the party behind him was a 'pagan party linked to the Gods of Olympus' then it was a poorly made act, with costumes and decorations that looked like the best pieces low budget art students could afford. I genuinely believe that most of the criticism could have been avoided if the ideas were presented with more of a cinematic or theatrical approach (more details, pompous decorations and etc.). Sometimes there was this lack of style, care and attention to details that made some performances feel even amateurish (like the part with the floating pink dancers in the beginning when the director doesn't switch cameras and shows weird/off angles; during the pre-recorded Gaga's performance one dancer slipped and fell, but for some reason they ran with it, etc.). What I mean is if everything at least looked perfect and felt like it was planned for years, people wouldn't be that critical. And it's a shame that so many people, blinded and influenced by some 'bad' bits, call it the worst opening ceremony ever. There were 'good' things like the ending with the light/laser show on Eiffel tower, the statue display, mechanical horse and Joan of Arc… I don't think it was the best nor the worst ceremony, but a part of it was messy and maybe not thought out through. I also think they should've been smarter regarding the sensitive and divisive topics (I mean, you're showing this to the whole world), even though the vocal communities who are currently hating the performances also go way too far with the hatred and ideological argumentation, imo.
I don't know if it sounds like I'm disagreeing with myself at times, but just like the ceremony was a mixed bag, my thoughts about it are too.
Speaking of sports, have you watched the skateboarding final? When it was added to Olympics I was so excited to watch it, but so far it's disappointing. They one by one do a trick and that one trick is rated, then another trick and so on until the highest rated wins. I kinda wish that skaters had programs with a bunch of tricks and elements like ice skaters have and the difficulty of the program is rated, again like in ice skating.
No. 2109186
>>2108886AYRT the difference is that you have an actual reason to think it's bad. And I also have mixed opinions on it. My problem is people who were asleep for most of the ceremony stopping at one detail and completely ignoring everything else, and generally idiots proving that culture is indeed like spreading jam on toast and the less you have the further you have to reach. I was also shocked at the weird threesome thing, that was the actual outrageous part for me. It felt like a trashy perfume ad. Imagine was also performed at the Tokyo Olympics, though I wished Juliette Armanet performed her own song or covered another french classic.
>>2109101I mostly agree. Some costumes on the runway looked like they were about to fall apart, it was stupid for the closest filmed performers to have the shittiest costumes and it's true the bacchanal bit should have been more obvious. I think the whole runway part tried to be too many things at the same time and ended up looking like neither of them. The cancan dresses were not the best, they should have been able to think of something that doesn't look like a Halloween costume and is clearly visible from a distance. The dancers were not in sync at all. The art props in the water didn't look very good. I'm a bit disappointed that with all the money that went into it, and all the trouble that was caused, it didn't go all out on everything. The idea was really ambitious and I feel like we ruined our chance to have a truly historically impressive show.

Taiwan’s double world champion featherweight Lin Yu-ting, scheduled to fight on behalf of Chinese Taipei this Friday, also lost a bronze medal in New Delhi over a “biochemical test for gender eligibility”.
>The IOC says ultimately it is up to individual sports to decide their rules based on “robust and peer-reviewed science … which demonstrates a consistent, unfair and disproportionate competitive advantage and/or an unpreventable risk to the safety of the athletes.”
>But there are significant concerns behind the scenes about the system being particularly unworkable in boxing. The IOC has effectively divorced itself from the IBA so decisions largely rest with the national Olympic committees and federations.
>Insiders say it is a significant reason why boxing is not in the Olympic programme for LA 2028. Studies show higher testosterone carries a huge safety risk for women in any combat sport. Men, the science shows, punch 2.6 times harder than women; the biggest documented performance advantage in any sport.

>>2111620We wouldn't have religious messages in an official public event in France. A surfer apparently had to remove religious imagery from his board. You're not allowed to show up to a public school with a crucifix around your neck either. When I was little I drew an anime character with a cross at my therapist office and he didn't put it on the wall. I understand it does look like the Last Supper at first glance but the confusion is cleared in half a second if you remember that this is France. People always comment on our issues regarding laïcité but somehow forgot all about it all of a sudden.
Besides that, the Feast of the Gods is exposed in Dijon. The Last Supper is in Italy. IMO the problem is that they didn't make the costumes a more obvious reference to the Greek gods besides the DJ girl's halo. I'm curious if the drag queens brought their own costumes or what because it doesn't look like they were made for the event.

However, I think the US women’s team are genuinely changing the sport! In the past, many female olympic gymnasts were teenage girls, and because of the standards then, were only viable at a young age. You may remember the scandal where one of the Chinese gymnasts was only 14 (too young to compete at the Olympics). But Simone Biles is very strong and mainly excels in pulling off extremely difficult moves that no one else can, and she’s still winning gold medals at 27 years old. Most of the other women from the US team are also in their 20s. Beyond just being good, I think that’s why this team is being celebrated so much
