I was curious about the current top earning artists on patreon since I looked many years ago and of course it was Sakimichan and saw this thinking people were finally getting tired of her but no, she’s sitting at around 8,000 patrons but for some reason I don’t find her in many search results of top patreon artists unless I just use her username. Has anyone new been up and coming lately with more interesting art? Noticing that most of the popular artists from 2008 deviant art who broke away to instagram/twitter/tumblr seem to have better long term staying power than new artists from the last few years. Saw all the sakimichan clones through this thread but they don’t seem to be drawing the same appeal which is interesting to me.

It actually is an interesting discussion, at least for me, because sometimes it’s so obvious what the artist’s gender/ideology is, and other times it’s more ambiguous. I want to know why/how that kind of stuff affects people’s art process, or what someone could know about me just by looking at how I draw.

But even besides that she has a sizable audience that has always been very supportive of her work and remained loyal for years yet she chooses to alienate them all in one twitter thread because nothing is enough for her. It's basic online content creator hubris, you turn against your audience when something you created doesn't receive the praise you think it should instead of reflecting on your own skills as a storyteller and an artist.

It's not like she got "cancelled" over some petty misunderstanding, she had an unsolicited meltdown accusing her gay audience of not making her feel welcomed despite them never giving her anything but support on her ventures despite her focus on straight romances, called them abnormal and finished it off by calling the people telling her to calm down "radfems" which is the equal of branding someone as nazis in the twittersphere. She bit the hand that fed her, this isn't some ouroboros situation of kweers attacking each other but someone fucking up with her perpetual victim complex and letting her insecurities get the best of her.

Your cope doesn't matter in this context anyway, the point is that she saw that according to a poll she has 2/3 LGBT audience, then threw a tantrum about it framing them as the reason why her comic project about a straight romance isn't doing so well. Whether they're really gay or spicy straights doesn't make a difference since the end result is her being uncomfortable by being followed by this presumed LGBT crowd and used them as a scapegoat for her own inability to create something that would interest her target audience.

Id rather people draw sexy aged up versions (sexual or not) than canon 5 years olds being sexy. This is just retarded sjw at it again when the end result is 18+ on purpose. this is such a non issue for anyone who can separate fiction from reality.

>age them up and do sexual content is pedo

>Keeping them the same age and doing sexual content is pedo

it's a zero win situation considering the other shit people call "pedo bait" other than only drawing them in a pure, innocent, non-sexual way because they were a kid in the show even though at some point children grow up and have sex and somehow people will still find a way to call a completely nonsexual image sexual because of a camera angle or something.

it is also completely different to wonder what a fictional character looks like as an adult and be attracted to them versus doing it to a real person. One of them is actually real

The problem is that this kind of artist draws child characters that are popular right now on a sexualized way. Why are they even doing that? It's one thing to wonder what the character would look like older, it's another when the first thing they think every time they see a child character is "I gotta draw this little girl as an adult woman with her tits out". artists draw characters sexualized all the time. A character is an arbitary being. It isn't like someone looking at an actual child and thinking "wow they're gunna be hot when they get older" it's people thinking what this abstract, designed character would look like older and probably imprinting on the character, use them as some sort of self-insert, fantasize fanfiction or whatever fucking else.

maybe they draw the "little girl" as an adult woman because they want to draw a sexualized adult instead of a sexualized child. Characters are abstract concepts, they can be whatever the fuck you want them to be. They do it because they're characters. They aren't real. You can explore whatever concept you want with them.

this topic pops up every time a popular character comes up. these characters will be the same canon age while you are turning into dust in a casket and yet people acting as if this is the same as if someone made sexual comments about a minor in real life.

Literally the only thing posted so far is 2 clips of the final image and it doesn't look sexual just because she has tits. You guys are seething for no reason when yes, it WAS a 5 year old version at one point, but Sakimichi isn't doing a magic wand, suddenly adult but still mind ofa child. It's a literal future idea version. Everyone can have their own idea of what an adult version of a character might look like. Let people have fun. It's not all because of wanting to be a gross scrote. yes she makes works that men like, but you have to be insane to dismiss that she does have a female fanbase. Her rendering, specifically, is very romantic and that's already directed towards women because it's created by a woman. No one fucking does that except people purposely looking for an issue in art. >>1181616 is right in regards to it literally only being an issue because you want it to be an issue when on the surface level, most people will see it as "Cool, adult version/take of Anya" and instead of making it some pretty thing only as an adult, and wholesome, they wanted a sexy version and most likely because the mother character, who ISNT even her real mother, is sexual in how she presents herself. I am sure that your work is lovely but it is likely more that people are self concerned. With their own lives, their own studies, their own art. You being older may have something to do with it, but if you would like to speak with others it's probably best to approach those that interest you. Neutrally speaking, people are even further in their own spheres in this day and age.

I would try to stray away from thinking that it is due to your skill. People are thinking about themselves. Until you have reason to think that, it is self alienating.

Have you been working with a grid? It's a great help when you're a beginner; in art class we were recommended to make a simple grid out of cardboard frame with strings, so if you're not working digitally, you can try this too

No. 1185922

>>1185632
What knowledge you need has nothing to do with perspective, but proportions instead. If you're drawing without reference, then they can be as wide as you like, depends on your preference. If you are using reference, like a real vase in front of you, couple of meters away, then you can use the old school method of measuring with a pencil. Extend your hand fully in front of you, hold your pencil horizontally, and move your thumb so that the width of the elipse is 'recorded' on the pencil. Then, while still holding your arm extended, with the thumb at the same spot, rotate your pencil vertically and measure how many times is the elipse repeat in the height. That's how you get accurate proportions. Grid is useful to understand composition on the canvas while this practice helps you understand proportions in relation to themselves and other objects.

another way that i have used is described pretty well here https://citizensketcher.com/2014/07/23/step-by-step-drawing-example-davis-house-dot-plot/ it takes a little practice but you basically use dots and marks to mask out the overall shape of your subject before you draw any lines. the grid method like nonnas have shown above is handy but it can be a bit of work to set it up, this dot map combined with some basic eye measuring techniques is really useful.

So I'm an artist studying different skintones because I don't know much about how lighting works for them. I wasn't sure where to ask this because of all the arguments surrounding the topic.

Top row is how this woman's photos usually look (taken in a bathroom). The bottom row photos are both her under bright sunlight, so why do those two look like different skin shades? Just looking to know the technical reason behind this.

Cold, blue-ish light in the bathroom; warm, orange-ish, strong light of the sun, as simple as that. Bottom left is done in a cold-colored environment, looks more like a photoshoot than just a candid with a phone in a warm colored environment, like bottom right.

She has cool undertones so this affects how her skin in general will reflect under different lights. Top two are in dim poor bathroom light that is coming from above her, but theyre also edited. Bottom left is under natural light causing her darks to appear darker while casting shadows. Instead of a golden brown you can see her blues under the light. On the bottom right shes in front of the harsh lighting from the sun during golden hour. This creates shadows if you arent facing straight on. Think of lighting like a filter in terms of contrast. The suns lighting causes her shade of skin to appear lighter while retaining her blue undertones. Picrel is unedited similar skin tone and same undertones. Left is under sunny light but facing towards it. Right is not facing towards the direct light but rather under it, making his darks darker with shadows. Its really all about where the light source is coming from while also taking into considering the undertone of the skin. The shade can always change, but not the undertone. Hope this helps in some way.

This artist’s (Cyarine) work just gets worse over time. She’s drawing more and more ‘diverse’ people but somehow they all either have the exact same face or she makes them ugly as fuck. I went to check on her instagram since she’s one of the guests at the MCM con, but my god she should not be advising people how to draw. Her facial anatomy is so off and she’s been pumping out the same shit for years.

Also heard she’s hated in her own country, but if anyone had details about that I’d appreciate it. Couldn’t find much in the other threads.

holy shit I know her art has been plateauing/stagnating for awhile now ever since shes been able to sit atop her pile of patreon bucks and hasn't had pressure to improve or actually create good work anymore, but jesus fucking christ this is such poor quality compared to what she used to pump out. the noise filter and color pencil/crayon brush she used make this look like a highschoolers attempt to skinwalk cyarine.

i used to really like her art for the hands, but even her hands (esp in pic related) lately have been resembling more of those thumbcramps/whimsipop sausage fingers than actual hands

from what i remember from cyarines prime posting time on here, she used to get talked about alot mostly due to her being an abusive and spergy POS towards her ex-gf, vio, which caused most of her local art community to dislike her.
shes also time and time again dogpiled her fanbase on smaller instagram accounts and literal 14 year olds on social media before for creating art that resembles her fish-eye autist face "style".

this reminds me, i recently stumbled upon a cyarine skinwalker on instagram who upon first glance I thought actually was cyarine due to how closely resembled the art looked to her old viral style. but even that cyarine skinwalker at this point is making better art than cyarine herself.

guess livestreaming videogames on twitch all day doesn't make someones art better. who wouldve thought. its almost as if every autist ever who decides to start streaming on twitch only does it so they can find an easier way to get money for sitting on their ass doing nothing. happy to see her art has suffered because of it.

Why don't you Finnish nonnies talk more about her here? For example, if I hadn't read your posts in the Finnish thread with Google Translate, I would've never known that she had been drawing a middle-aged man dominating and bullying a teenage Asian girl (or something like that) for years, or that she has always been hinting that she doesn't like the gays, or that she shat on "normie" straight women for liking stuff like 50 Shades of Gray. Had I known that before, I would've never felt bad for her.

Also, does she have no sense of self-preservation? How does she obsess so much over "too many kweer people" liking her hetero stuff that she couldn't shut up about it, but not think about how much the Twitter crowd loves to blow shit out of proportion and cancel people for homo/transphobia all the time?

I don’t mind the stylisation, I understand she isn’t going for a 1:1 ratio drawing. That was just the example chosen. But if you look at her work from a few years ago compared to now, it stagnated and dropped in quality. She’ll post a drawing saying she’s practicing drawing diverse faces and then they all have the same face. Or in this, from one of her million drawings of herself. The anatomy of both the face and pose is completely off. It’s like she’s broken her arm and her face is melting off. The idea of her going to a convention and talking about her art, when all she has is drama from her past partnership with Wacom that fell through due to her being a POS to them publicly, is laughable.

>Why don't you Finnish nonnies talk more about her here?
Because I don't want to deal with the scrotes ITT whining about le wokies ruining the internet again.

Anyway, I'm someone who has been following her work for years as she's been a big name for a while. She's always been known for drawing self-insert comics, it's obvious that the petite Asian girl is supposed to be her avatar and the big middle-aged guy is her fictional dominant dream boyfriend. She's always been very defensive about liking this dynamic and seemingly developed a guilty conscience over it because having surrounded herself with feminist discourse that talks about misogynist tropes, yet she wasn't able to compartmentalize and enjoy her kink while acknowledging that these people are worried about the real life occurrence of older men abusing younger women.

>she shat on "normie" straight women for liking stuff like 50 Shades of Gray.

No, she said that she wants her audience to be "normie straight girls who like 50 shades of gray". She posed this as a juxtaposition to the "weird queers she can't bond with" so in her mind she has a problem with these gay or bi people enjoying her work because she actually thinks they "can't get it" as if "older character domming over an innocent young sub" was something outlandishly deep and unpopular. Realizing this you can probably see how douchey she sounds, especially because she brought this up A LOT even before that particular thread blew up. Note that she's always drawn het content yet still been popular so it's just her not being satisfied with the numbers she's reaching and not being able to detach herself from the discourse that she herself continuously brought up. Nobody ever shamed her for her kinks or preferences besides she herself.

Another thing that pissed people off was her implying that "gay people hate their female side" or "aren't in touch with their femaleness" and that's "something she can't relate to" as according to her being a same-sex attracted woman means you can't like, relate to or appreciate femininity or femaleness. To top it all off, years ago she used to hover around this well-known LGBT circle and mooched off their reputation to grow her own following.

I'd dig up some receipts if she hadn't gone private and I hadn't unfollowed her, and I don't really care enough either. I mostly pity her for letting her insecurities take the wheel and tell 2/3 of her audience that she doesn't want them following her. But in the end she fully deserved to be lambasted and brought it upon herself, especially when after being confronted about it, in quite a reasonable manner I might add, she started accusing everyone questioning her of being evil terfs to shut them up. It's more about her not respecting her audience, refusing to understand them and being an egoist than legitimately homophobic (which she also seems to be to a slight degree).

>Also, does she have no sense of self-preservation?

Like >>1186918 said I just think she had grown a big head and became blind to her own surroundings, she's gotten away with the "woe is me, for I'm an oppressed hettie" posts before and then stepped over the line to the point people couldn't excuse her anymore. She's been coddled by her fans a lot and got used to being able to say ignorant things, even during this drama she tried to use the "I spoke with my bi and ace friends and they said I was right" defense so that shows you her nonexistent humbleness.

Samefagging to add:
>She posed this as a juxtaposition to the "weird queers she can't bond with" so in her mind she has a problem with these gay or bi people enjoying her work because she actually thinks they "can't get it" as if "older character domming over an innocent young sub" was something outlandishly deep and unpopular.
I want to clarify this point. It's not at all hard to find other women who like this dynamic, it's like the most popular one of them all and it doesn't take much effort to find other artists that enjoy it. So it falls on her just lashing out at her audience and blaming them of her own insecurities that are supposedly keeping her from connecting with people with similar interests. How I see it and having read enough of her insecure rants while I was still following her, she probably gets jealous of the attention artists similar to her get so she doesn't really want to "be their friends" or anything, she just wants them to praise her work unconditionally.

i wouldn’t even say her “call out”/“cancellation” was super based on accusing her of homophobia or whatever cards people want to play. she literally acknowledged that her follower base was filled with a certain kind of person, then purposefully lashed out at said people for preconceived notions of how they saw her. doesn’t really matter that they’re queer, it was just an idiotic thing to do since no one would enjoy that.

Is also right that it's cringey to complain about your fanbase.

This is a thing in Finnish drawing/con/fandom circles bc radical queer is strong and there is very toxic atmosfere to basic straight/bi white girls. Also to lesbians but differently bc lesbians are romanticised as long they accept girldick and hate if not accept. Basic straight/bi white girls get kind of bullied by special gender (straight/bi white girls) and treated idk how to describe it. Like: you cant sit with us, youre not cool enough, you don't deserve your audience and you have to agree with me you b** or you get canceled. Its like girl mobbning, rolling eyes and talk bad behind your back specially if you are pretty basic girl.

kek it really isn't. she (and others like her) just chose to run with the LGBT circles and pay lip service to them for clout and now bitches about how she's being oppressed for being straight and can't relate to her "queer" friends. She could've gone to any other faction that focuses on comics and art in the weeb/nerdy circles but to be popular and successful there you actually need to be talented and an interesting persona, not just an asshole posting pandering identity politics all day long.

When you see them controlling, or actual grooming happening, then maybe get worried, but even 19 year olds dating 16 year olds, I'm not 100% freaked over because a lot of people are still in highschool or just graduated and literally still live in that mental state of being a teen. But women can most certainly take advantage of minors just as men can, it's just that it tends to happen far less than men bc women commonly aren't such sexual deviants.

because it uses the "x" and "O" to show that one is right or wrong when there is "no right way to do art", people have said that it's two different lighting sources (even though if you look at the shadow on the feet it is literally the same one), accusing the artist of saying cell shading and front lighting doesn't exist, people trying to overcorrect it, people saying that she didn't include enough information (one person linked Marc Burnet's ambient occlusion tutorial) and said she didn't know/teach enough + being a genshin artist.

This is really why artists don't provide criticism or feedback on art anymore and tutorials are becoming harder to find that aren't paywalled. If you don't include a disclaimer that says "but there's no wrong way to do art", provide no sense that either side is right/wrong or don't/do, etc. you open yourself up to getting harassed and criticized for god forbid trying to provide a tip on how they do things because these people cannot comprehend that not everything is meant for them.

This is obviously lighter than even his in-game skintone and it doesn't look good on him. Something like that should have been noticed and corrected while doing the colors

The biggest money is in degen stuff, but if you can find fetishes you're okay with drawing you can insert yourself into a niche. Draw popular shows and follow artists/interact a little. If you get one person to reblog, that'll help. Also sexy art challenges with popular Characters like the shirt challenge or 'draw your oc in..'. People like ZONE reblog Ankha fanarts if you tag her. Theres options, you just need to immerse yourself in which subgenre of porn you want to draw. Lolicon/Shota and Furry always get tons of hits. You gotta be real good to get adult characters trending Ive noticed unless your art is pretty degen or more lewd than you'd want.

Honestly depends on the style you're doing. You could make up your own style and design a bunch of differently-proportioned characters, but they'd all have to adhere to the same rules of your style. It makes me feel motivated to finish the piece since it feels less like I'm working on it just to toss it in the twitter void, I focus more on it being a little gift for a friend.

Plenty of people make a name for themselves with original art, most of the artists that I follow are like that because I prefer seeing original creations than endless amounts of fanart. Drawing fanart requires you to follow trends and stay one step ahead of everyone else and that gets exhausting and soul sucking, it's not a sustainable model because it will burn you out sooner or later and the disinterest will shine through. Just look at latest Sakimichan pieces, they're atrocious and people have gotten so bored of them she's now resorted to edgy shock value like the aged up sexy Anya to keep the numbers up.

And even going viral with your fanarts doesn't guarantee a follower base. Like others already said, art is a social hobby and gaining popularity is honestly all about connections. That's why so many popular artists are subpar at best, they just happened to be at the right place at the right time and knew the right people.

Personally I can't see myself wasting that much time in a fandom, but I guess you just really have to like it. Nevertheless this is comforting to read.

I'm honestly getting a little bored of even looking through mountains of fanart myself. It really does burn me out.

You don't have to disclose that you use 3D models, in fact, lots of comic artists are very open about them as simply apart of the drawing process! I think the important distinction is using them as a crutch vs as a tool. Greg Smallwood has been my favourite artist for a while and he uses references and 3D models frequently, it's interesting to see the process when time saving is important.

100% doable. It's harder than doing fanart but it's far from impossible. Though it helps immensely to have a niche/aesthetic you do consistently, or find communities to leech attention off of. I do sfw monsters/creature character designs and got most of my followers from labelling my art "furry" and consistently dropping pictures of stuff like cartoon bugs.
Having a niche also helps a ton in getting commission clients, because clients are gonna look for artists who are good at drawing their prefered subject matters. I.E. if you wanna get clients for like TTRPG character art, put yourself out there consistently drawing fantasy character designs and tagging them as stuff like "DnD".

You don't have to go that far to be a popular NSFW artist. NTR is a very popular fetish.

No. 1211261

How do you handle the fear of your art/ideas being plagiarized?

As someone who doesn't really do social media, I used to have a decent following on deviant art and tumblr (for that time) and a circle of fairly popular artist friends on LiveJournal, DA and a few now defunct sites. It was a good space to share art.

Much about the current online atmosphere stresses me out, but I can deal with the social justice and gender idiots. The thought of my work and ideas being stolen however is very upsetting to me. Unfortunately this has happened in the past.

I don't believe thqt my ideas are ground breaking, but they are rooted squarely outside of pop culture and 'aesthetics'.

I have fairly niche (non fetish) inspirations, and of the most frequent compliments that I recieved when I posted art was the originality ans depth of the ideas. I'm also out of my 20s and that plays a part in things as well.

It may come down to either post, don't post, or post selectively but it sucks. Does anyone else experience this?

I wish that people just weren't so inclined to steal/trace from others. Idea/concept theft is a slippery slope but I still have concerns.

No. 1211278

>>1211261
I guess you can never escape it. Smaller artists are inspired by bigger artists. Someone is bound to “steal” your ideas if you ever make it big. Someone might trace your art. But it rarely happens, unless you’re one of those basic cute popular anime girl artists which the tracer is sure to make bank off of. You’ll be fine, don’t let your fears hold you from sharing your work. Even if someone steals anything, your account and the dates of those drawings will always be accessible

No. 1211503

Yeah and not just tracers or impersonators, but also accounts whose content is just reposting others' content without credit. Came across one such post earlier and the comments were saying the original artist doesn't like being reposted. But there were bright sparks defending it, like "the moment an artist puts art on social media, they're saying here's some art do what you want with it. If you dont want it reposted, don't post it somewhere it can happen." The entitlement.

I agree with >>1211278 that if you want to post something, go for it, but I'm also saying be aware of entitled people like this. Watermarks and signatures might help, though at the cost of detracting from the art.

I think he both traces and references his images! The process of stylisation makes it a little harder to tell. He doesn't have to credit his references because he makes his own! Smallwood honestly goes above and beyond with his references, the body is actually himself, as are some of the hands! Obviously he uses stock images too, however he's changed them enough to not be blatant copies of the original stock image. That's why 3D models are a really good development for commercial artists, there's no(or less) trademark issues with tracing 3D models, especially ones you've posed or sculpted yourself.

I actually feel that nowadays you don't need to draw fanart to get noticed. Either that or instagram isn't sure what I like because I separate my fan interests. I only get original art on my discovery page.

If you post on instagram just make reels of any thing it grabs a lot of attention. There are so many different types of reels you could film and most of the trends/sounds used are very very low effort. What comes to mind is "I made this pop and this pop and this pop". These types of reel audios allow you to post your own original work and get attention easily.

You could also just post your exercises and studies as separate posts and as reels with a trending audio as well. A lot of people eat it up. One of the anons said you could watch something which I think is a great idea just stop at a random frame and share the result as a compositional study/color study/whatever.

DITS challenges also work especially if it's made by an artist with a relative following, most of the time they share the art made.

You could also work on a specific thing that makes your art distinguishable eg: hatching, monochrome, theme etc.

I used to follow an artist that drew pretty girls, very common for instagram, but when stood out was the hatch work at first. She always experimented with different mediums and techniques while clearly knowing how to position her work and draw attention to it (i.e design). Next thing I know she's working on an indie game as a character designer.

Good luck!

Different anon but I just wanna add that Netorare is not just "cheating", it's kind of a fucked up hentai genre where we see things from the perspective of the protagonist (scrote viewer self-insert) in the role of the cuckold, while the woman he likes can cheat on him voluntarily, be raped or something in between. It doesn't need to be his girlfriend or wife who is "stolen", it can also be a childhood friend or even family member (so it sometimes overlaps with incest). It also overlaps with gyaru fetish a lot because lol gyarus are cheating sluts amirite. You'll see ugly bastards in this genre a lot, doing the cucking. NTR focuses on the feelings of sadness and jealousy the MC gets when the woman is taken by another guy. Sometimes he ends up getting off to it at the end while still being jealous and depressed, kek. It's fucking retarded. When the protagonist is the one who "steals" the woman from another guy, it's called Netori, but that one doesn't seem to be as popular as Netorare. And when the MC being cucked voluntarily it's Netorase.
Absolute loser coomers love NTR but it also makes other scrotes really mad so be careful with it if you decide to draw it.

More people are coming back to Tumblr so it wouldn't hurt to try. I recently saw a new user grow to 300 followers in just a month. I would also vouch Tumblr because the tagging system allows art to have a lifespan of more than 20 seconds unlike the other social medias rn.

I guess you can try Twitter or Insta but you have to also sell people on your personality on Twitter. Attention spans are rapidly decreasing so unless you're not posting everyday people are going to forget/become uninterested about you.

Tumblr is a good place to find niches/subcultures if you want to hone in on a particular market but Twitter/Insta have more users. Sorry for the blogpost but best of luck anon.

NTR isn't always fucked up, especially when it comes to guys/girls who like seeing their partners involved with other people, usually in sight of the person getting NTRd. He wasn't doing reels much yet when we talked (this was like a year ago) so I'm not sure about that.
Semi related but he also posts videos of him making art to facebook and he told me if it gets decent views he'll make about $2k per post. But his entire life is marketing himself so don't expect to make these numbers unless you have legtimately impressive (to normies) or clickbait worthy art.

For more visibility, I'd choose the former, but if you want to develop relationships with other artists, I'd probably go with the latter.

Like, obviously social media is rather fickle and nothing is 100% guaranteed, but the majority of you audience unless it's a niche is going to be normies. So I see the appeal of having the former for easier access to a larger audience. Other artists aren't the majority of people buying your merch or pledging to Patreon, it's mainly other non-artists. If you aren't appealing to them you'd HAVE to find a niche somewhere or you'll struggle a bit.

Seriously speaking appealing to other artists isn't hard because it requires genuine skill but because artists tend to be unironic crabs that at the same time envy and hate everyone more talented than they are. They might recognize your skill and acknowledge that you produce quality work but they will never congratulate you for it and will attack you if given the chance. That's why so many artists have imposter syndrome and low self esteem and the "suffering artist" trope even exists, art as a field is based on constant self flagellation and judgmentalism.

As for the difference between them, masses want to see things that are familiar to them and don't challenge them, it's like you have to be a curbside pickup at a chain restaurant for them. So it's more about the portrayed subject matter and the style not being that offensive while with other artists you get more range. Personally I'd like neither because both of the options seem to be a wild goose chase.

They ass kissed each other all the time while the quiet good artists got no recognition. The only recognition they received were DMs to draw free porn. I worked pretty hard to get better by doing speed paintings, figure sketches, muscle diagrams only to hear mostly crickets. I feel like I'm slowly reaching where I want to be and finally better than the rude users I met. All the good artists left so it's a giant circle jerk of mediocre artists.

yeah that's what most "femboy" both fans and haters actually mean. most women who hate femboys do not mind, if not actively enjoy bishies or "pretty boys" as in feminine, androgynous or even just leaner and softer featured and not overly masculine male characters that can still be easily identified by the audience as males because they still look and act like adult men (or at least teenage boys if that's what they're supposed to be).

It’s all a fetish. They don’t actually want to transition, they like the idea of 1. Tricking men into thinking they’re attractive young women 2. Looking like young girls and having a dick 3. Being the center of attention in whatever space they take because their weird fetish has to be “validated” as a true identity. Prior to the modern warfare. even soldiers had high standards to be dressed head to toe respectfully, it was the first and second world wars that changed global ideas about masculinity, as an example WW1 single handedly ended beards as a sign of masculinity in the west, cause it was mandatory for all soldiers to shave any facial hair

https://www.wearethemighty.com/mighty-culture/warfare-changed-mens-style/#:~:text=It's%20a%20common%20lament%20among,shaven%20to%20seal%20their%20masks.

>When WWI-era soldiers returned to the United States, they appeared in newsreels and newspapers as well as their hometowns. They were all shaven to within stringent Army regulations — and America liked the new look. Facial hair would fall out of favor until the 1960s and, even then, it was mostly American counterculture that re-embraced the beard.

>Evans later changed his mind, and the reconstruction reflects his later idea of the figure as a "Priest-King"; he used the image on the cover of all volumes of his main publication on the Knossos excavations, despite the cost of gold-embossing the crown.[9] Evans' change of mind was perhaps largely because he had decided that the original painted wall with the fresco was part of a processional corridor in the palace

Anon, the hardest part of starting out is that your drawings aren't always going to look great. Your tastes and what you're interested in is always going to exceed your current skill level. The goal isn't just making a decent drawing, it's learning HOW to do it.

If you find yourself constantly in a rut, you should be examining all your prior drawings and figuring out which ones you prefer. Try to point out details that you find appealing and figure out why.

This will help you understand what your tastes are and teach you to go over what you're doing. Being able to point out why you liked something or why an element didn't work for your previous drawing will help you improve.

What I love doing is duplicating the canvas and just drawing, getting whatever shape, and then taking textured brushes and just winging it. Learning to draw is like learning anything else, to cook, to play an instrument, to ride a horse. You don't give up or feel worthless because you burn a meal the first time right? Look at art the same way. It's not a reflection of your worth as a human, it's just a skill you can learn to do with practice and time.

Vertical scrolling is the worst way to present a damn comic, the repetitive mechanical motion gets irritating and it ends up being a bunch of wasted space in between paneling. And unless the creator already made a page format alternative so that their comic wont just become vaporware, it's also stupid difficult to print and archive.

I doubt a site like this can go under but if it and every other scroll comic host did because it fell out of fashion or whatever, good luck with your lossy long files.

Just don't care. An image is an image, if you made it you made it. There are people using downloaded stamp brushes for hands, so who cares what you use and how you achieve your results. It doesn't matter that much. You can overthink it and talk yourself down or you can focus on drawing what you like. I sometimes feel like I have impostor syndrome when I compare my numbers on social media to, in my opinion, more skilled artists that get less (most likely because they don't post as frequently or draw original work instead of fanart), but then I google impostor syndrome in artists and look at the shit art some of the people talking about experiencing it produce and think that I'm nowhere near that pathetic. I’m in my late 30’s and you can’t escape it. Traditional mediums seem to be spared so far but illustration or digital art is not. Even finding a decent discord (my desire for an art forum) dies eventually because everyone wants to dump their stuff, get praise and leave. I’d say try to get into local art scenes wherever you are and build out from there.

NTA but what's the etiquette for showing your stuff in a local art scene environment IRL if you do digital art? Do I bring print outs of my art? (Honestly it might be easier to remember critique if they note it down on the paper)

No. 1234228

>>1234219
NTA but from my experience people would come with tablets, or portfolios on pendrives if it's a case of some more official feedbacking event. Never seen anyone have their stuff printed out but I'm sure that's mostly because it's inconvenient / pricey to get a good print reflecting actual quality of your work in digital.

What the other anon said. I’ve been to groups where people have brought their tablets along with traditional media. You don’t have to bring prints if you don’t have them already.
To note- even if you don’t have a business yet (or plan to) having a few business cards with your name/handle socials and email is a great start so you can get in contact with others and it’s a step up instead of saying “check me out here” because people will forget.

The most important thing you need is a revisions rule, like one revision only and charge $10 for each further one (or whatever is in your realm of acceptability). I don't do comms but revisions/changes are the main way commissioners waste artist's time and annoy them. If it's open-ended they will request 20 free revisions and the comm will never get done.
Also right to refuse service for any reason (actual reason being they seem like a creep or something)

Give yourself more time, put double the wait time you actually will take. Under-promise, over deliver. This also gives you wiggle room to be busy or sick without them complaining.

Samefag, Also agree with anon above, you are giving a free sketch before payment? Payment up front, saves you from some timewasters, you can always refund if you run into any issues at the sketch stage.

Also keep communication as short and non personal as possible, from both sides, customer service is also a job and unless you include that in your prices you shouldn't do it (no humoring them talking about their lives, health problems or whatever, don't share that info with a customer either)
(Obviously don't include that in your rules but something to keep in mind, any buyer/seller interaction that gets too chatty or personal goes south, from my observation.)
Also: don't undercharge, again you avoid timewasters who want to boss around an artist for five bucks. Charge more and save yourself the bother.

Be very clear about cost per character, cost for background, it seems open ended here.
Include a list of things you will not draw to save time from those people asking.
(I'm an artist but this is all from observation of other artists who offer comms)

Telling people how long your process takes is a terrible idea unless you want people hounding you about why their commission isn't done.

You're also setting yourself up for failure if something comes up and you have to delay a commission because you've given yourself no time.

Estimate how long you think it will take to deliver a piece maximum and tell the client triple that amount of time. Your timeline for a sketch, for example, should never be less than a week even if you know you can finish it sooner.

first thing that popped out to me is that a sketch and clean lineart takes you about the same amount of time to finish, don't offer paid sketches at all if you have to do the same amount of work for less pay.

Don't tell them your work speed, you can still get the commission done in a timely manner but don't put that expectation in their mind. Ask them if they have a deadline, but don't tell them how long you'll take.

For my commissions, I give them a messy sketch first and only offer changes to major things like a pose at that time only. If they like the sketch, I don't work on the final until payment is given. The only revisions I offer after a commission is finished is things like color (easy to change) I don't offer paid revisions at all, and commissioners are more specific about what they want because of this.

Important things to note:

-Always take payment upfront, even for sketches. If you're worried about feeling like you're ripping people off, at least take half before continuing with anything else. This will prevent you from getting screwed over if a client bails in the later stages.

-You don't need to explain every bit of your process in detail. Save that for the refund/copyright policy for your TOS. That's where you'll need it the most for your own protection. When it comes to your process, keep it simple.

-Clients really, REALLY don't need to know how you painstakingly take on a sketch. It not only leads to scenarios in which people will hound you like hell (like other anons mention), but it leaves you open to being taken advantage of.

You can easily write something like **"The turnaround for sketches is about ~2-3 days. Clean lines is ~3-5 days. Colored drawing takes the most amount of time of 4-7 days."** Done. If you want, also add a disclaimer saying that depending on your health/circumstances the commission could take longer, but that's it.

Stuff about WIPs being watermarked should just be a general statement if it's not already in your TOS. Other than that, your statement at the end about refunds is fine. Don't be afraid to give a refund if you don't want to deal with an annoying client.

I find it especially disgusting considering how mismanaged all of this was (not that it's uncommon for zines).

Let's be real, at some point if huge amounts of money are involved it is no longer a "passion project zine" it's a job with responsibilities. If you can't handle that you shouldn't be running an anthology (I'm calling it that because it is one).

People aren't going to care if your excuses are "well zines are built on trust!" Yeah, that excuse only works for teenagers doing a fan project for fun, not a grander anthology with merch, production costs, and the like. People aren't going to accept that when money is involved.

This isn't a case of some teenagers getting overzealous about a fan project. These are grown adults who should've had the capacity to understand that scams are abundant and that you shouldn't trust anyone with that much money, even if they have a history of running zines.

I'm just more baffled than anything else that no one suggested that having one person in charge of all the funds for your project wouldn't be a good idea? No contract was needed? At all? There's no way they could've gone this long not seeing anything suspicious with this.

>>1238191
From what I've read, one reason nobody brought up the idea of a contract was that they didn't expect to make as much money as they did before pre-orders. So what about after they realized a fuck ton of people wanted to buy this thing? The excuse I saw was that since Teresa was the head mod/person who first "started" the zine, it was as if she had more authority over the project, and they all just feebly deferred to her. Hindsight is 20/20 and all, but at the very least you'd think they would have confronted her way back in the fall or something. They let this go on way too long anyway that's for sure. Wish I could see the discord chatlogs kek

No. 1238435

>>1238361
Depends on the scale of the project and what you want for the zine, anon.

Digital-only zines are much more easier to set up as you only have to worry about formatting for a .PDF file. There are plenty of guides out there to make smaller books/zines thanks to them booming in popularity over the past few years. You can easily share these files via a Dropbox, custom website, private link, or even a Google Drive. It's not the most professional method, but if the formatting with the zine is good, most don't care how it's distributed, just that's it's accessible to those who participated.

When it comes to physical productions, zines were traditionally done by hand, but nowadays it's best to check your local printing shop for advice. Many are happy to help with projects like these and sometimes you get some interesting advice.

If all else fails, you can look up online general guides on where to post. But again, it depends on the scale of the project. If you're looking for accessibility, using social media for advertising is a good idea. If it's niche, just make sure people within your group can access it.

God I keep seeing this Shit take and I swear people who bring this up as a solution have black/white monkey brains.

If they legitimize it more with a contract then it puts them in more jeopardy of being sued by the IP holders. Zine/doujin projects are only supposed to be printed in small quantities and not for profit. I feel bad for the mods that have to deal with the aftermath, but all of them are going to fuck up the fanart scene because of their huge retard behavior. Altus/Sega is already fucking anal about Persona 5 fanwork being sold, the fact this zine made almost 100k is going to make them feral.

The original Google doc mentioned they were trying to take legal action and couldn't because there was no legally-binding document. That's the main reason why people bring this up. Now, a contact wouldn't have 100% solved everything but at the very least there would've been something other than just screenshots of shady activity at best. If you're going to be handling that much money, there should be some proof of an agreement taking place. Even doujin circles have some sort of signed agreement for projects like these.

The zine is already copyright infringement as the characters don't even belong to them. However, I don't think this will mess up the fanart scene as companies are aware of these types of anthologies existing. They either DMCA them or just turn a blind eye to it. if anything, this isn't been the first zine to self-emplode like this. Just the most recent.

It's sad that zines WERE just small groups of friends/artist making passion projects, but nowadays, everyone wants to their #aesthetic brand to show online without any of the commitment or hard work involved. It seems like people expect every single zine now to be at the level of an huge anthology when it doesn't need to be.

>>1240678

It's for the fans. Many people will buy ANY fan works BECAUSE of a character they like. The art doesn't have to be god-tier or anything like that because people already have that established connection with the character from said media.

Don't get me wrong, quality definitely plays a part to some degree of how well merch does, but not always. If the character is especially popular, expect merch to sell well as long as it looks decent enough.
