No. 326842

Sarah "Best in Show" Spaceman is a Atlanta based cosplayer, motion graphics designer turned full time influencer, with 130k on Instagram. Really, she is a mediocre cosplayer, who is absolutely delusional about her sewing skills and obsessed with over-engineering and over-bedazzling every design she can get her hands on. She posts tutorials with her terrible crafting advice to Youtube for her subscribers to hugbox her and tell her she is The BEST cosplayer ever. She is a known sore loser who will throw public tantrums whenever her shoddy work doesn't place in contests or anybody criticizes her.

I do not understand how this happens. Like, why not just add a blob of hot glue or something so the nut can't come unscrewed? Or if it's supposed to come apart like that for travel, why couldn't she reattach it? It's still fucked up when she gets pictures later at 18:02.

Also maybe I'm just a joyless bitch, but it annoys me how she includes her and her friends being public nuisances in these con videos. Like 5 minutes of this vid is dedicated to her friends attempting to ram the ankles of other congoers with RC cars in the lobby. In her older holmat vlog she shows her and her friends climbing all over statues. You are 30 Sarah, you should know how to behave in public by now.

Every time she releases a video it baffles me that she continues to tout herself as such a knowledgeable and important source of crafting knowledge, and then turns around and says "do as I say not as I do." …PEOPLE DO AS YOU DO BECAUSE YOURE SUPPOSED TO BE TEACHING THEM. I understand being on a deadline but she literally does nothing but cosplay, 2 months is plenty of time to make a cocktail dress with some dangly shit. At the very least don't be so vocal about "I got lazy so I didn't do it right," not to mention how tacky it is to just title the video "I got paid to make this shit teehee!"

She pisses me off and god I wish I could say all this in my comm but everyone worships her.

The lacing on the back looks like it's falling apart and the armors are way too big and bulky compared to the original design, the gradient on the dress is barely visible, she's missing half of the arm jewelry, the wig is ratty, the horn is opaque, who the hell paid for this? Did she get 20 bucks and a coffee out of it? what gets me about this is her harping about how cosplay contests are about the chance to get critique and to make friends with other cosplayers, when her entire history with contests as documented here is being a sore loser.

I think vidrel from a few weeks ago is probably peak stupid though. Highlights include:
- Buys a train ticket and airbnb to travel to the Carolina ren fair, but doesn't get a ticket to the fair itself ahead of time, and they're all sold out.
- Has 10 hours to spend in Charlotte before the airbnb is ready, instead of finding something interesting to do she sits in a Starbucks all day and bitches about it
- She does this cosplay channel shit for a living now, so you'd think this would be the perfect time to make and show off a new costume, right? Wrong. She wears an old costume on day 1, and one of her friend's DIRTY CLOTHES on day two.

I can't believe this entire video:
>Complains no one knows who her boyfriend is cosplaying despite him wearing a normal suit at a niche micro-con in the middle of nowhere where he looks like a customer service manager instead of the guy from Severance
>Complains no one stopped to take photos of her half-ass cowboy "steampunk" cosplay when she's literally at a steampunk convention and looks like a amateur compared to the other cosplayers
>Still complains when people do take her photos (difference is they don't stop and inflate her ego first). This con is in the middle of a casino with normal people going in and out and despite knowing this she's still annoyed normal people are taking pictures of her
>Complains when she does her panel and someone in the back is 'making comments under their breath' at what she has to say. She mentions this person clearly knows how to sew cause they were making comments during the Q&A. Sarah makes them sound like a bully and jealous. She talks about how the steampunk community is aging out, but clearly doesn't get that the majority of steampunk cosplayers are skilled and experienced seamstresses/dressmakers and yes, would have a thing or two to say about her shoddy skills. But of course it's bullying and not critiquing.
>Complains she couldn't wear an anime cosplay to a steampunk convention
>Complains staff have to shut down the convention early because there was a rumor the norovirus was spreading
>Makes it sound like the con made it up to deflect from potential food poisoning being the reason why people got sick
>Complains cause now she's got to get out of the hotel in a hour (films her dramatic hand shaking cause she has to be an adult for 2 minutes). But actually the hotel is relocating the convention guests to a new hotel.
>Complains because elevator line. Boyfriend literally rebooks flight in minutes.
>Complains because girl on plane is reading a book and using a neutral blue light for visibility. This irritates Sarah cause her precious eyeballs can't sleep with that evil blue light.
>After all these complaints, she literally does the most abhorrent thing anyone has done in this entire video: vomits ON THE PLANE because she can't ..reach the bag? Cause she thinks she's motion sick and vomits all over her seat/window and her boyfriend? Like seriously you said you were wearing a hoodie over your head you couldn't have at least tried to keep some dignity and use that instead of contaminating everyone around you??
>Gets diagnosed with Norovirus

Good job Sarah. Literally complain about everyone around you yet turns out everything was being done for the better. If she had literally just done what the hotel said and relocated to the other hotel and stayed the extra day they already paid for, she could at least have isolated and prevented other people from getting sick. But cause she's so far up her ass she has to not only contaminate her friends that drove her to their city but everyone on a plane.

She had time to feel like she was going to throw up, pull down her mask and vomit in 3 different places but no time to grab the barf bag in the seat pouch directly in front of her? What a womanchild. If you are feeling nauseous and prone to vomiting on a plane why would you not have the bag on your lap ready to go just in case? And the whole passive aggressive puking on that random girl because you were too scared to ask her to turn off a light… how are people not calling this retard out.

Also the woman with the light was BEHIND her, not even in front of her, so it's not like the overhead light was directly shining into her eye or something. Planes have a light so passengers can use them, it's not a crime. Imagine you're on a plane and reading a book to pass the time and sooth your anxiety about flying, when suddenly a splash of vomit hits you from the seat in front of you and instead of the person apologizing, when they get up and walk by you off the plane they just smugly grin at you leaving you utterly confused and disgusted, wondering what you did wrong.

I did laugh that someone was talking shit in her panel lol, especially when she kept calling people at the con old ( aka probably 30s and 40s). Why does any con invite her when there's a 90% chance she's going to turn around and make a video shit talking the organization or the attendees? She's made videos complaining about her guesting gig at Supercon, her competition at NCC, and now whatever this steampunk convention is.

The only convention she's given glowing praise to is ALA, but her behavior as a judge was off-putting from what I heard. It's clear she treated the contest like her own personal channel content. A big part of that ALA video is footage of her judging during prejudging sessions. Apparently some contestants felt uncomfortable being put on camera during something that's already stressful, but felt like they couldn't tell their judge no. She also didn't treat everyone equally: cosplayers who talked to each other after prejudging realized that some people got a lot of filming, while others got dismissed as unimportant and not filmed at all.

Her video only includes the flashiest cosplays instead of all the contestants and is obviously filmed in the judging room (which itself is unprofessional and distracting). Contestants felt like they got different experiences based on how impressive their cosplays were, but unless someone gets their hands on the complete raw footage there's no way to prove she did this.

Nobody is going to publicly complain about a judge for the same reason nobody said no to filming, so don't hold your breath for any call outs. I know of at least one person though who said they were going to complain to staff.

>Imagine not only puking on someone, you puke on them when you know you had contagious Norovirus, and you are so self-loving you tell the story anyway as an cutesy anecdote to get sympathy.
See what gets me is that even though she did the test and had it CONFIRMED NOROVIRUS, she still did this little stunt doubting if it was even norovirus being spread at all, as if the claims about it were just intended to scare off the attendees for no reason, which makes no sense at all. She even gets mad about how the rest of the hotel customers weren't evacuated, even though it is actively harmful to them anyways, not BECAUSE it's a hazard to them too but in a whiny sense of "how come THEY get to stay HUH??" which is blind and childish af. Even if she didn't know at the time that it was norovirus, the retrospective of trying to frame any kind of anger or blame on the blue light passenger and then act like the norovirus puke is somehow some sort of vengeful getback for it is borderline sociopathic.

She is very open in this video about fighting with the other judges and being miffed that she was "only" a sewing judge (even though she signed the contract and was also a past competitor so she knows how the structure at momo works..), basing her "judgements" off of WCC rules (a different con, who cares), and that her opinion matters more than the other three judges.

At this point any convention who invites Sarah Spaceman as a guest or judge is a fool and deserves whatever publicity they get.

Even if people agreed to do it, she shouldn't have asked. She's judging them, she's in a position of power over them so any agreement isn't going to count as actual consent. People are going to think 'if I say no, she won't give me a prize' and say yes even if they don't want to be recorded.

No. 350652

This is on Sarah but it's also on the cons as well. How difficult is it to include a "Sarah Spaceman will be judging the contest! Do you consent to your prejudging being filmed and put into a Youtube video?" on the contest sign-up sheet?

It'd eliminate that pressure to say yes in the moment and it'd give cosplayers ample warning instead of just thrusting a camera in their face when they're already stressed as it is.

Then again that'd mean coordinating and communicating with con staff and she's proven to be shit at that.

Why is it remotely the con's responsibility to do Sarah's legwork for her, especially when she is being PAID to be there and do a different job? Showrunners already have enough to do leading up to the contest without having to explain a judge's personal project and organize filming consent spreadsheets.

This fiasco is partially on Momocon for inviting her in the first place when she has a history of making these vlogs, but that's a bad suggestion.

No. 350672

Why is it the con's responsibility when they invite her and know she'll be filming their contestants?

It's both of their responsibilities. Either they organize a better way to ask for consent to film or they don't allow her to film at all. Clearly there's an issue with how she's currently doing it.

Her ego gets bigger and bigger with every video she posts. She sure is comfortable talking shit about every person she encounters, one day she is going to shit on the wrong person. I would give her a pass if her cosplays were amazing and worth being snobby about, but her shit looks lazy and kitsch. Most her viewers have never sewed anything or crafted anything so to them they can't tell how crappy her cosplays are and see how much she cuts corners where she shouldn't, and goes overboard in areas that don't need it.

Also kek at her getting butthurt that she was the only one that tried to argue that makeup isn't necessary for judging. Way to project your own insecurity. Makeup is absolutely important for presenting a cosplay to judges. Why would you want to show up in a costume that took 100+ hours to make and leave you face untouched, thus making the cosplay look incomplete? It's all about presentation and I'm not going to half-ass showing off that much work, but she's all about laziness.

I can mayybe get some points behind the "why makeup shouldn't be judged" but I guess that can be applied to anything. Imagine judging two of the exact same cosplay, same skill level, but one had high heels as the reference and one has flats as the contestant can't wear heels. Sure, you could give them a pass in the name of accessibility but if that's all it comes down to the more accurate/better execution wins. If someone can't wear makeup, okay whatever, you're not going to get minus points but also someone else is getting better score because they did also do the makeup.

That's like saying wigs or shoes shouldn't be judged as some people can't stand wigs or want their dogs free on the con floor. Lenses I understand as those will be bought anyways and don't need skill to apply (like makeup).

Love seeing her getting the attention she deserves finally, and not just the pandering she's been getting from her fans.

Exactly and this is why it's obvious she's a terrible judge. She's making up rules because that's what her audience and inexperienced judges understand. If judging was just a big checklist of who did what, everyone could do it.

I’ve seen several other cosplayers (including those who judge) speak out and say they think it’s inappropriate to film during judging. I get that Sarah makes a living through YouTube, but I’m sure she gets plenty of footage without the judging. If she doesn’t, she can just talk about the con, people will still watch it. Less that it’s inappropriate to film during judging and more that Sarah’s untrustworthy as far as 1) paying attention to the costume during filming and not just thinking about making content and 2) editing the video after and avoiding the nightmare scenario of sharing footage of someone with their skirt hiked up to show details or a top off/unbuttoned to display a corset or whatever. There’s trust in a judging room that contestants can do something like that and it’s private.

Between those comments defending Sarah's right to film up people's skirts and the ones screeching about how "Makeup isn't craftsmanship!!!" I'm shocked Sarah can even call her content educational. Her fans are retarded.

the worst part about modern internet is how much it connects you with people who will simp for you and defend you. this wouldn't fly 10 years ago.

There's one person posting nonstop under Kamui's comment about how "Craftmanship only counts things made from scratch! Makeup is just editing your face, you aren't making anything!"

What the fuck do these people think wig styling is?

yes because everyone makes the raw materials used to make the cosplay right?

You could put hours and hours into painting a bodysuit with realistic skin textures and shading and that'll count towards craftsmanship, but doing it straight on your own skin makes it suddenly void to these people. Actual toddler logic.

Have you seen the video where she "teaches" him how to sew? They had to take a 2 week break between filming because he was so uninterested in finishing. He looks genuinely miserable LOL

That is so crazy how much they’re fighting about this one point just because sarah said makeup shouldnt be judged and apparently her word is law ugh

One of if not the biggest parts of cosplay is emulating the character you’re dressing up as and precise/well done makeup really elevates everything. It’s like yes you don’t have to wear it but why put in so much effort to every other aspect of the costume except for that one? It’s quite hypocritical because sarah talks about her doing her makeup several times to “get it right” for both of her Miku cosplays.

They think that saying it should be judged as part of craftsmanship is the same as saying it's necessary.

>What if someone is allergic and can't wear makeup?

Then don't wear it, and you won't be judged on makeup. Same logic for if your costume doesn't include a prop or armor. If it's not there, you won't be judged on it. I don't get why that's so hard for her and her fans to understand.

Apparently it's ableist to say you can't get points for something you haven't done, according to tiktok comments

Then the whole concept of a craftsmanship competetion is abelist because there are people with neurological tremors or amputated limbs who can't sew or craft. Not being able to participate in one aspect or the entirety of something because of a disability or condition is just something those people learn to live with, Sarah and her braindead followers need to leave these people out of their mouths and stop speaking for them.

it's so dumb because those kind of contests are for people who want to enter them and they have different levels of entry. my local con specifically had a "model" tier for people with bought cosplays, how more inclusive do these things need to be? this is just that tiktok/twitter mentality of destroying stuff you don't like instead of making your own space and allowing both things to coexist. not to mention that famous wheelchair bound cosplayer who would make all her own stuff and accessorize her wheelchair around the cosplay and enter contests back in the 2010s. people just want to bitch about everything.

It's extra stupid because Sarah always (that I can recall) piles on the drag makeup for her costumes and when she's getting judged. And I can kind of understand if you're someone who doesn't require like any makeup at all for a a character (someone like Rey from Star Wars or whatever – she may have Hollywood makeup on but it's meant to look natural) but in general, you always look better for pictures and shit if you have some on. And if you don't require it for judging it then whatever but what about someone who comes in with really good and noticeable makeup? Can they just not get points for it even though it's a skill they took time to implement for the costume?

Also lol her expecting the people working at the con to know and watch her YouTube channel?? I guess if you were really good and thorough with your guests then maybe you'd want to know a lot about them but it's weird to expect them to watch some YouTubers videos just because they're a guest.

Sarah's nonapology is here. It was because of those pesky goalposts… she's actually the victim ):

She isn't even apologizing for the things people are criticizing her for, just that her video was "sloppy". No, Sarah, it's what you did IN your video that people take issue with, not your shitty rushed content.

Also what the fuck is that last line supposed to mean? What the fuck are "starfish people"?

Was anything in her video actually helpful in a way that other prejudging videos haven't been? I swear I've seen tons of videos where people just prejudge a friend or even film themselves being judged. what was unique about hers?

No. 351079

I don’t think her behind the scenes filming really educates anyone on the process. The bulk of it is filming close ups of cosplays and describing techniques.

What might be better is if she interviews cosplayers around the convention and talking about how they made their cosplays like she’s done before. It would still be interesting and low pressure as opposed to pushing a camera around during judging…who are we kidding though. The main reason she records this shit is so she can show off that she’s a super special judge who is just so knowledgeable about cosplay!

See, that would be the smart thing to do: a video about judging and you could do a mock prejudging with a friend to show how it usually works. That would make sense. But Sarah wants to use her judging for content (although it really backfired for her this time).

If she really wants content from the con, she could ask contestants after the contest it that will speak a bit about their costumes. I’m sure many would say yes after the contest is over and they’re less anxious. And obviously they would know it’s filmed if she asks them specifically.

Her “apology” reeks of her either not understanding what she did wrong (more so than the filming) or not caring. She’s so full of herself that she can’t self reflect. In any case, she’s come out looking insanely unprofessional and hopefully conventions will think twice before inviting her.

Because Sarah tells her followers that there are no other resources and she's the only one sharing information. That's her whole brand. People in her cult don't watch other prejudging videos or other crafting tutorials because they don't think they exist.
