I get a lot of asks wondering why I can’t ask my family for help with my rent or hospital bills. And like. Fuck. I never wanted to have to bring this up. And it’s not like anyone deserves to know. But maybe it would help to like? Get this off my chest?
When my mother who was a nurse fled into the night and left my illiterate father and I to the wolves (debt collectors were after us at the time. I literally lived in a van for seven months while we were on the run) it turns out she ended up in Hollywood. Like, working the streets Hollywood. Like getting black eyes in police raids on the Boulevard, Hollywood.
And like. I was a kid. I didn’t know it at the time. But years later, when I was across the country on a job for Dad, running drugs from Reno into Sacramento, I met a guy one night while I was blowing off steam at a seedy bar just outside of town. I was the only girl in the place who knew how to work a pool stick, and he liked that. When he challenged me to a drinking competition I knocked back twice his amount of whisky. And like, looking back. The pancreatitis. But fuck man. He was hot. He turned me on. And like, look. I was drunk. There were bricks of cocaine sitting in the back of my car. My arm was still healing from having to stitch it up after flying through the windshield of a semi-truck the week before. I knew that I shouldn’t. Like, I fucking /knew/. But when he asked me to follow him to his place, I didn’t say no.
He took me to a motel. He kept saying my eyes were so familiar, which didn’t make sense because there was only one other person who had heterochromatic eyes like mine, but I let it go. After we made world-ending drug-induced love (remember that cocaine I mentioned earlier?) he passed out, and I had a cigarette outside in my nightgown.
Which is when I heard it. Sobbing. Screaming. From the the next motel room. I knocked on the door to ask if she was okay, but there was no response. But like, I knew those screams. I fucking knew them. I kicked the door in and ran inside.
It was my mother.
When she saw me her reality shattered. She started ripping her hair out. She thought I was a drug induced hallucination, she was so doped up. She kept saying “my moon child, my moon child came to take me to heaven.” Like…fuck, man. You don’t ever forget this shit.
When I got her to calm down she told me everything. She was being pimped out. There was money on her head. She was constantly on heroin, or meth, or both. But the worst part? The worst fucking part?
The man I’d slept with was her pimp.
She was sobbing in my arms like a baby. I didn’t know what else to do, so I called Dad. And my god, that man. He’d never gotten over her. When he was teaching himself to read and write letters, he prop up a framed photo of her for encouragement. Whenever he’d wake up from the withdrawals he’d be screaming her name. He told me to get her somewhere safe and he’d take care of the rest.
Long story short, my mom had to adopt a new name, new identity. Had to marry a new man and start a new family to make it convincing. It’s too dangerous for me to contact her, but she sends me bananas to let me know when shes thinking about me (banana was my dad’s first written word). As for him? Well, he pissed off the biggest drug lord in Reno. And like. It’s hard to understand these things if you don’t /know/. But like. These guys are like wolves. Like, they run in packs. If my once-illiterate father weren’t the smartest man I knew, he’d be fucking dead by now. Not that he won’t be dead soon anyway, but…fuck. I can’t think about the terminal cancer right now.
He’s never in the same place for too long. He pays rent for multiple properties to muddy his tracks. Keeps his cell phone off most days so it doesn’t ping his location.
So, like. Yeah. They’ve got other things to worry about.
