I recently watched a special on tv (I think it was the BBC) about a town on the border of the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea called "Peace Village" that's completely empty. They pointed out that if you zoom in on the buildings with a camera you'll notice that a lot of them have fake painted-on windows.

There is also a conspiracy theory that North Korea is actually a paradise, but is kept hidden away from the world with a smokescreen of oppression and decay to prevent everyone from moving there. That would be funny if it didn't make you remember that oppression and decay is in fact the reality for the people who are unlucky enough to be born there

I still see this behavior on the internet, mostly from teenage tankies and occasionally on North Korea subreddits I stumbled upon when I was trying to find some pictures some time ago. So many of them parrot NK propaganda of how "housing and food is free in NK!!" and ignore it when you tell them that, sure, food and housing is free, but there are constant food shortages, starvation to the point that people are eating grass and you can't actually choose where you live and the apartments are more likely in shit condition.
I have also seen some blame westerners for not providing NK any food for free, which is a level of brain gymnastics I will never understand.

Also, has anyone been following Yeonmi Park? She's a North Korean defector, social media personality and writer that has been dubbed "Paris Hilton of North Korea". She's constantly been exposed of straight up lying by other defectors and experts. I would call her a lolcow if she was milky enough.

I'm pretty sure it's like this- the good jobs are in Pyongyang, and the areas outside Pyongyang are quite rural and underdeveloped, let alone the fact that they have to give a lot of what they produce to the capital, which keeps them hungry.

That's a hilarious take. North Korea is a hermit kingdom, they don't associate with anyone. If America or some other western country provided food for them, their leaders would reject it.
