it's actually a South Korean skincare trend to look overly oily/hydrated. It was ok at first before she went full nutso, but after all of the cosmetic work and excessive makeup, it is too much. The hydrated skin look only looks good on minimally made up faces.

i stopped watching her after this fake thumbnail of Kimmy having a tumor. I've seen that photo before and there is no bump in the original. after that every video i saw of hers in my recommended looked more and more clickbaity.

Anyways I have two theories, one is that she did indeed escape, saw the western interst in her story and potential to earn cash, embellished it where she could to make a more dramatic narrative and to hide unsavory aspects of her life. Book sales, YT views. Her videos are indeed clickbait-y.

My second theory is that she is one of those Korean speaking Chinese who lived on the border of NK which she mentions very well. Hatched the western $$ and audience plan, and found a way to come to the US and sell it. It would explain her and her mother's shifting story as well as why she doesn't get involved in marketing herself in South Korea or live there like most escapees; they'd be able to sniff out her BS.

idk this thread kinda sucks. I think she was rich because from North Korea only the elites have a chance at escaping, but growing up in North Korea she didn't have access to beauty items or clothes or capitalistic commodities. Plus it put her in a vulnerable position of being sexually trafficked. She's getting plastic surgery because in her youth she was deprived from commodities and she was groomed and used sexually so she has sexual trauma. Wtf you want me to laugh at a mentally ill and traumatized woman for escaping the harshest political system on earth ATM? No anon, Yeonmi is getting paid by neocons and right wing libertarians to be a China war hawk. One of the think tanks she's working for now is called the Atlas Foundation and it's ran by the Koch family. Before she started the right wing grift, she was trying to hang out with liberals but liberals don't hate China as much as the right. She was also ran out of South Korea because they caught onto her lies and she was shunned by NK defectors living in the South.

Except that part of the story is a lie. She does not mention camming in her autobiography and the first time she's ever mentioned being a camgirl was in 2021. Originally, she said she was bought by a Chinese scrote to be a live in maid who raped her but he also never raped her because she said she fought him off. So, since he couldn't rape her, he raped her mother instead, but he didn't rape her mother because her mother actually sold Yeonmi to the scrote for money. Then Yeonmi claimed she was never trafficked because both her mother and father (the same father who she claimed died in NK) protected her while she was in China.

Sage for no contribution but I watched this girl on a YouTube documentary and I felt like something doesn’t add up. I felt bad for having these opinions of a North Korean defector, but she sounded oddly calm and collected while talking about horrific events which would traumatize a normal person. Like her voice didn’t even shake plus the PS is sus.
