Went to a Christmas service with a famous choir this afternoon to be a bit Christmasy, cuz otherwise the rest of my Christmas is about cooking myself a lush meal and chill in front of YouTube or maybe a few Christmas movies.
The only Christmas spirit I've got otherwise is a hat I crocheted I wore outside earlier and a souvenir t-shirt I bought in Texas with "Merry Christmas y'all" on it kek.
I remade the chestnut soup we had at our corporate Christmas celebration at the beginning of the month, added some onions to the soup to add a bit of something before mixing it. I'm cooking some artichokes for my first course to eat with vinaigrette (not Christmasy but I love artichokes), my duck and goose legs are in the oven with fat, garlic and some seasoning for another hour maybe more, and then my duchess potatoes go in afterwards.
I don't really have anything else but to look forward to what I'm making myself for Xmas so you gotta find small things to be thankful for.

Merry Christmas to those who don't hate Christmas

Christmas is shit and the weather is always terrible. Wow let's commute in the winter with millions of others whilst also listening to the same Christmas songs for the past 2 decades and not have a mental breakdown. You're cold you have to spend a lot of money on materialistic bullshit or eat yourself into a constipation coma. Literally I'm just drinking and eating to put the time in until I can leave. I had to watch elf last night and I couldn't pretend to enjoy it anymore. I've saw it too much. Anyone celebrating Christmas in the southern hemisphere is elite and living properly. All festivals should be allocated to the warm and dry months.

The weather is the least of my concern, I mostly hate how materialistic shit is. It reminds me of how bleak it is to be alive. All Christmas makes me want to do is kill myself.

Weather is pure shit though, at least the winter solstice happened and the days are getting longer again. The materialistic aspect is pure shit though I actually don't care about receiving presents and I'm unemployed this year so buying presents hasn't been fun because whereas I had so many months of savings left Christmas has wiped out a months plus worth of savings and its like ffs. No one gives a shit about cards and gift wrap and shite and anyone that does probably isn't someone you want to have a conversation with because they're probably simple minded. I'd much rather it be treated as an elaborate dinner in which we also acknowledge Jesus in prayer because I still remember what it's suppose to be about lol

It was very nice and cozy, getting to spend Christmas with most of my family again feels nice, it would've been perfect if everyone could have been here at home, but it's a bit hard since one of my uncles died not too long ago.
Still, I had lots of fun with my parents, my brother, his girlfriend and one of my cousins.
I still wish I didn't suck at replying to people's messages so I can communicate with the rest of the family that's alive but living in different states and/or countries though.

No. 1827897

While I don't mind the Christian Christmas per say, it should be aknowledged that the traidtion of celebrating around this time of the year predates Christianity in a lot of countries. I enjoy Christmas as a cultural expression I guess. I'm Scandi, where I live winters are still cold and the sun doesn't rise for two months, so I'm happy to at least have Christmas to look forward to around the darkest day of the year when life would otherwise have sucked the most. That said I agree that modern Christmas is way too materialistic, it's gotten out of hand. I was celebrating with 11 others yesterday and I kid you not, opening all the presents (in my country we open them on the evening of the 24th) took four fucking hours. It's soul crushing and I had to leave before we finished because I got work today lmao. I think a couple of presents for the kids is ok, or handing out some food or homemade goodies for friends and relatives, but in general it should be a time to spend with the ones you care about to recuperate and celebrate a little.

No. 1827929

Oooh I'm spitting angry my cousin decided randomly the day before christmas that he's coming over later today. I wish he'd just stay the fuck away he brings the whole mood down. He's like the stereotypical reddit neckbeard impossible to be around for more than 5 minutes, is always filthy and wears a top hat everywhere. Also he has bpd or some shit I swear because his family is fucked up. Also he's greedy and pointless he's going to come over with NOTHING and eat 3 peoples portions of food and take presents from my mom and aunt. I wish he'd just stay home nobody wants him here truly when my mom said he was coming yesterday it brought the mood down so bad me and my brothers and even my dad all hate him but my mom feels bad for him so she even had a backup gift for him in case he decided to show this year. I'm from a non Christian European family with North African Roots, when I used to celebrate Christmas with my family, my Muslim grandmother included, there was also too much focus on the gifts, especially for children under 8 yo. And unfortunately for me, my father had seven siblings, I have 10 cousins (5 older, 5 younger) on that side with whom we celebrated Christmas. We never celebrated Christmas with my mom's side of the family so I don't have another reference.
From middle school onwards we got cheap gifts you'd rather throw away. I kid you not, one of my aunts who would watch over me when I was a kid gifted me earrings when I don't have my ears pierced…
I had to trade with one of my sisters' gifts who got a keychain.
The only thing I was looking forward was the food whenever we'd celebrate because the other aunt that hosted us did make a literal effort to make it nice. But the rest was consoomerism galore.

Was dreading it because depression makes it so hard for me to fake joy about any festivities yet I did fairly ok in that regard.

But my dad totally ruined christmas eve for my family.
He hates christmas and if he feels any emotion, we all must be reminded of it every minute. He spent the entire 24th drinking with his friends, very likely in a good mood, but when he came home for dinner and later gift-giving he was pissed. Hardly said a single word for hours while the rest of us tried to act joyous and start conversations. Made me feel like he didn't want my siblings and I to come home or that he dislikes that my mom bought us many presents. Christmas is really important for her and she always tries so hard (also for me). If I was her, I would question whether my husband really loves me, because that was so cruel…
Why we didn't call him out on his behavior? Impossible, it would make everything worse, you can't talk with him like a normal adult, he would just start gaslighting "uwu i always do everything wrong, i should just go away and die!"
It was the same on my birthday. My siblings are also often lacking the eq to not further provoke him, it feels like all the emotional labour is on my mom and I as oldest daughter.

No. 1828445

This year I started developing this weird fear of future christmases. I can't stop being scared that one day I will be alone during the holidays. And I kept thinking of all the people I know who might have been alone and it just makes me feel so sad.
As an adult christmas lost any magic to me. Sometimes I wonder whether I need to have children of my own to make it a special event again (and to not end up alone).
It's ridiculous because now I'm not alone, I shouldn't even think about it, but I still started crying while in church out of fear of that being my sad fate.

Is your father my mother? I can't count the amount of times my mother pulled that shit. What is your father's problem? You and your mother seem like nice people, can't he just act normal for one day? I've spend many christmas eves like you did, had many dramatic "talks" with my parents (especially my mother in my case) and it never changed. Your mother and you need to stop doing that emotional labour, your father has some real problems and if he can't solve them or act at least some days a year like everything is "normal", it's not your responsibility to keep the peace. Having to deal with depression and then also with a family member like that on a day where everyone expects you to be happy is hell, I know that, I've done that way too many years. I don't know how old you are, but the best thing I can think about would be to write it all down and hand it to your parents. Tell them how you felt and that you don't want to have another christmas memory like that ever again and if your father can't change that it's not your fault, because he is the older one, he should be an example and care for the family, not you. I hope you still had some pleasant moments and aren't feeling too down, it wasn't your fault and you did all you could while being depressed.

it was comfy as usual, it's just me and my Nigel every year so we make christmas food on the 23th and eat that until the 26th (or whenever we run out). we usually have a 3 day long christmas with christmas songs all day and matching outfits. I'm actually coming down christmas today, slowing down with the songs and videos/movies. he got me a nintendo switch and the new pokemon and I got him a new leather bag and wallet set.

My cousin was absolutely insufferable he showed up in his top hat with a giant twirled handlebar mustache and giant leather duster (that he kept saying made him feel like a hitman or something??) but I was happy he actually came in clean clothes this year. My mom even said to me anon can you believe he is wearing clean clothes this year? KEK also at one point he got so angry at me like actually upset and started arguing at me in redditese about runescape. Otherwise I had a great time with my famalam we made homemade fruit cake and it was amazing

I'll celebrate the new year with two of my friends. It's a bit depressing, we used to be way more people celebrating a few years ago but two of our friends live abroad now, another one avoids us at all costs for some reason, so last year and this year we're just three. A friend will cook and I ordered a fancy cake for dessert. The third one made some really complicated dishes last time so this year she'll just buy some stuff like drinks, snacks and foie gras.
