I think I get why it's so grating and annoying, because you expect the woman to act more responsible. There's definitely a thread of self hate and self deprecation in them. I think it comes from neglect and having to grow up too soon, take care of myself and feel responsible and never having had a childhood or feel like you ever deserve love or to take a break. So when a guy partners with you and does what is bare minimum for other people, it feels worth celebrating and memorializing as a comic. Definitely some low self esteem involved. When I draw them I also draw them for other anxious women to tell them it's possible to find an amazing guy too. I'll definitely keep in mind that while it's fascinating and fun for me, it's cringe and run of the mill for most readers.
