_Lowbrow, or lowbrow art,[1] describes an underground visual art movement that arose in the Los Angeles, California, area in the late 1970s. It is a populist art movement with its cultural roots in underground comix, punk music, and hot-rod cultures of the street. It is also often known by the name pop surrealism. Lowbrow art often has a sense of humor – sometimes the humor is gleeful, sometimes impish, and sometimes it is a sarcastic comment._

One of Mark Ryden's pieces from The Snow Yak.
“there is a very dark and painful side to life, but that is natural. people in our culture think they shouldn’t ever be unhappy. they think being unhappy is unnatural. they try and make it go away. they take pills or they go to therapy to “fix” themselves. they blame themselves or others for their suffering. we need to understand that sadness is as much a part of this life as joy. it would be easy to just get bitter and cold while focusing on the dark side, but there is also an amazing, wonderful side of life. if you look for it, there is true magic all around us. maybe that sounds trite to the hardened self-protective modern ego, but there is magic in this miraculous life. if you open yourself, you do make yourself vulnerable to pain but the deeper pain you experience, the deeper joy you can have.”

"Photography as a medium has a dual character. Since its introduction, artists have used it to produce both art as well as document the world around them. For Chicago artist Newbold Bohemia, photography is a little bit of both: his photo series have documented real life issues, presented in staged, then manipulated images from his imagination. In his playful yet devious new series, “In an Ideal World,” Bohemia visualizes the story of a rebellious 1950s woman in the domestic world."

"Even the name Newbold Bohemia is a fabrication. The artist’s namesake serves as a reminder to create art dedicated to the pillars of Bohemian society: Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love. All of these are present in his “In an Ideal World” series, set in a beautiful, idyllic version of the 1950s, where a blonde femme fatale-housewife comes to terms with life’s truths. As he captures her day to day chores, Bohemia comments on the not-so-idyllic reality of gender roles, and his heroine’s oppression and anger."

“Photos are just a material like paint, wood, or clay. I plan, create, and capture images in my studio or in the field. I color them, paint them, cut them, and combine them — either physically or digitally — to create something new. I try to create not only an image, but an entire world within my image,” explains Newbold, “a world that is fictional but hopefully truthful. As Emerson said, ‘Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures’.” /end

Japanese artist Hirabayashi Takahiro (not to be confused with Takahiro Hirabayashi) infuses his religion’s mythology with the experience of growing up in his oil paintings. Using “boundaries” as a central theme, his dreamy portraits examine borders between the sky, land and sea, man and nature, childhood and adulthood, and how we navigate them.

His main subjects are young girls who serve as a guide or guardian for those in this inbetween state of being. Considering their young age, they share in this delicate state. They are emotional and gentle spirits, as implied by the way they attract butterflies, a traditional Buddhist symbol for delicacy.

n Hirabayashi’s hometown of Nagano, located in Japan’s countryside, one will find many stone statues of Jizō, a Bodhisattva. Jizō is seen as a protector of the vulnerable, including travelers, and statues of him are often placed at the intersection of roads. There is a custom of dressing statues of Jizō in red, a symbol that Hirabayashi borrows in the way he dresses his girls in red. We find them guiding animals out of containment into freedom, looking up at the sky and below at their reflections in water, or resting on lily pads at the surface.

In spite of such specific cultural motifs, painting relatable images is very important to Hirabayashi. He says, “Initially, I was attracted to the special nature of my hometown’s Japanese belief systems, but Buddhism is such a primitive faith and does not only apply to Japan. It has themes that can be found in cultures worldwide, and I have been heading in a direction to make works that can appeal to anyone.” Hirabayashi Takahiro is currently showing in Art Collector Starter Kit 3 at CHG Circa in Los Angeles through August 15th.

>>89149I like to think he paints things like that with the intent of making people uncomfortable and a bit weirded out. You could even stretch things to say he's bringing attention to this inherent sort of "grotesqueness" behind the BDSM subculture/most paraphilias, and the innate vulnerability of people who are subjected (or subject themselves) to those sorts of things.
But whatever, I'm probably just making excuses because some of the stuff he paints looks cute/cool to me despite the "uncomfortable" stuff, and I like the juxtaposition of innocence and creepiness that's present in a lot of his work, as well as lowbrow art in general.

To be quite frank I do feel that the pedo aspect is a bit of an elephant in the room as far as this style of art. It's hard to separate art from artist and I do wonder somerimes, especially if the painter is a male, how these ideas come about. Are they innocent expressions of an innocent, inner anima; or something more decrepit.
On one hand it makes for fascinating visual pieces. On the other hand. . . Suffice it to say that some images are more tasteful than others. I really like Hirabayashi's style.

>>89320Yes I could see this as well. Everything in or culture is so sexualized; the creepy and the sweet speak volumes of things that we as a civilization are hyper aware of and exposed to but are simultaneously very desensitized to. In the "bigger picture" pedophilia is such an awful but encompassing pattern in popular media, I could very well see a lot of these artworks in the light of bringing strength and power to otherwise voiceless motifs.
I'm still not sure about anything.

All of the ones I posted were done by mia mäkilä. on her blog she wrote about her work and where it "comes from."
she was in a physically, sexually, and emotionally abusive relationship with her husband for a long time, and tl;dr someone suggested she try to work through her struggles (and recovery) by creating art. something like that. once you know that, it's easy to see why her work is the way it is.
I think it's cool to see shared motifs in pop surrealist works by diff artists.
