kronz was caught selling artwork that was redrawn from anime screenshots, figures and other people's illustrations. Sketches he claimed to have made from life drawing in Japan were copied from cosplay magazines and personal websites. And like Sakimichan, he makes thousands of dollars on Patreon by drawing the same static images with different characters.

i personally dont find anything wrong with getting inspiration from figures and redrawing scenes from a ghibli movie?? a lot of the artists just copied a pose from an anime so.. im not playing devils advocate but what's shown here doesn't look bad to me.. if he's copying art from someone's original idea or oc, that's pretty bad but just because two people drew an anime scene doesn't necessarily mean someone's copying..

except he's literally tracing 90% of these images and making very slight changes. It's not as if he was looking at them and making it look similar, he is actually tracing over the image and passing it as his own.

I didn't really care about him tracing until i found out he was selling prints.
his dumbass fans keep defending him as if he was "just referencing" though, kinda annoying.

>>87987
You see, you missed the part where he sold prints of those. He even still has screenshots on his DA showing him selling pictures of his traces.
The little retard even admitted it being a "redraw" or a "tribute" in the associated DA journal. Since then at least the dumbass deleted the traced prints.
And funnily enough only now he's started to upload orginal stuff. Oh joy.

Inspiration isn't the same as imitation, he's just using them to cash in on the fanbases that give him money. I'm surprised that so few people have caught on to this compared to all of his fans that defend his "references."

Nope. That's bullshit that tracers and art thieves tell themselves to make themselves feel better at night. Tracing doesn't teach you fuck all. If tracing taught people to draw then why do people who trace suck ass when they're not tracing? Simple as that. that's like saying 'connect the dots books teach you to draw'.

I say tracing is a shit thing to do, but I used to when I was a kid. I started off by tracing with this barbie light table my sister had. When I would show the drawings to my friends they assumed I drew them myself. At that point I said "hell naw they'll find me out" so I started to just draw as I looked at photos. That was like 15 years agoand I'm not amazing right now but I think I'm pretty good. If you're still tracing as a person trying to pass themselves off as a legitimate artist you're a thief.

No. 89082

Maybe it's different for anyone. Personally I learn a lot from tracing. I used to trace traditionally when I was younger and when I first start to trace, my hand was shaky and the lines are hard, like, non-erasable hard, so I trace a bunch of times on different papers and get good at it. When I start to learn drawing for real, my hand was already steady and my lines were smoother. And I also traced when I was getting into digital drawing. Some pro digital illustrators even suggested it, for learning purpose only. In digital drawing especially, I learn a lot since I also 'trace the colors' (color picking and such), so I learn about combining the colors and brush tricks. But, this is just my experience though. I agree that tracing shouldn't be the regular practice if the main goal is to be a versatile drawer.

No. 89085

Tracing is actually okay, depending on the context. I'm guessing majority of you aren't in the art field professionally thinking tracing is some ultimate art sin.

Tracing is great for studying, like drawing over human anatomy to get better at drawing a human body part.

Can't draw a cat right? Have a camera? Take a picture of a stray cat and simple draw over it. It's your image, you have the rights to it. Therefore you can trace it. So instead of spending hours or weeks to get great and drawing cats for a deadline you manage to do it in an hr.

This is what a lot of artist do, theres no rule book saying you can't do this and that.

Now tracing something you don't have rights to, without permission and/or not stating in your artist nots you referenced them is in fact stealing. But a lot of artist if you ask are more then happy to give you an email stating you're allowed to reference their work if you ask politely and give reasoning.

You like their style and want permission before heavily referencing them? Ask them, 8 out of 10 they won't give a shit(unless its like those freelance tumblr artist, which I can respect why they wouldn't. I personally don't see the big deal)

If you don't understand what I'm saying, obviously you're not an artist. Not a digital one, at least.

Anyway, back on topic, recently I'm into "Bottle Design" theme, the illustrations are so beautiful. Here's one of the cutest I found.

lol bullshit. if you need to trace a photo to figure out how to draw something you're a dipshit. I'm an artist by profession (work in product design, concept art, comics, and game design) and anyone who tells you that tracing is okay is a dipshit. You should be able to look at the photo and draw from it. Having to trace it proves that you have no place in the art world.

Artists are fine with people REFERENCING but if you think that means you get the persmission to trace it you're a fuckwit. As well as honestly MOST artists arent really okay with someone trying to copy their style but it's true they dont really care. The thing is that if you're copying someone else's style you'll always be second best to them.

Show me a single professional artist who got good from tracing.

to be on topic: I love a lot of japanese card game/board game designs.

I think both of these posts are kinda on the extreme of things.

Yes, it is common for some artists like painters to do studies where they copy pieces made by other people. However, it should just be exactly what it's called - a study. You can't just repeatedly copy someone else's art or style and think the same colors, lighting, shading and angles can be applied to anything else you make. If done too often it can become a sort of educational crutch and inhibit artistic growth compared to drawing from life or creating original pieces. But as practice it can be beneficial in learning how to draw or paint in specific ways, like when using an unfamiliar painting technique or trying to figure out how to make a particular texture when pen or pencil hatching.

There's also a lot of debate regarding artists using traced photographs but it seems like the bottom line is that as long it's their own work or they have permission to use the photos it's ok. Alex Ross, Inio Asano, Umino Chica use their own photographs when they make comics but people like Salvador Larroca, Greg Land, Miyata Sou and Yuu Kamiya have been caught tracing images from magazines or other illustrators - which is very bad.

So tl;dr everything is fine in moderation but don't get caught tracing other people's shit.

I'm not a professional artist by any means but, although I feel full on tracing art is bullshit, especially if you try and make money off it, I did learn a lot about proportions and such by tracing shapes over other peoples' art - like drawing circles and rectangles over a photograph and then using that layer as reference instead of the photograph. It helped to visualize the body as components rather than a whole. Obviously that's a far cry from blatantly drawing over shit but those are my two cents.

I think drawing over photographs is excusable, but not with other people's work. Their anatomy won't be perfect, so you're essentially learning their errors. If you like their style that's one thing, but don't learn proportions from other people's drawings, you're setting yourself up for failure there.

>implying tracing has jack shit to do with muscle memory
>implying motor skills = muscle memory

Different anon, but muscle memory has been used synonymously with motor learning, which is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition. When a movement is repeated over time, a long-term muscle memory is created for that task, eventually allowing it to be performed without conscious effort. So yes, if it's done repeatedly, moreover with the same drawing, tracing has jack shit to do with muscle memory.

>If you're talking about digital inking then no, I haven't found tracing being able to help with that at all.

I was talking about 'tracing the colors' and I have elaborate on that. You said you're an artist, I assume you're familiar with term 'color picking' in digital painting.

I think you have made up your mind about tracing; it's a huge sin in art world, and I completely understand your sentiment. But personally, I still think tracing is not completely bad for learning if you're really, really new at art, but it shouldn't be a regular practice if the goal is to be an artist that can draw almost anything. Let's just agree to disagree on this.

Back on topic, this is another colorful illustration I found on pixiv~ It's currently #67 at Global Ranking. The artist ID is GAMBE, if anyone want to follow their work.
