I couldn't see an active thread for this topic, apologies if I missed it. Post anything related to coding, ask/answer questions etc.(catalog -> ctrl+f -> programming)

I tried to sit through Harvard's CS50 lectures but even after the first one I felt like I was struggling. Does learning to code get any easier or should I quit while I'm ahead? I don't really want to do anything with it career wise, I just think it'd be useful and fun to learn and do little side projects.

It gets easier imo but it does take some work. It's a fuckton of new information that just gets thrown at you as if you already know what you're doing, especially in JS courses

It gets easier but I haven't had experience with lectures like that, I usually use more interactive online resources which is less intimidating to me because even if it's confusing I feel better when I can see immediately that I learned something with practice exercises. Our motivations are similar where I'm not really looking for work, just having fun and doing personal projects, so I try to imagine the details of the projects I want to achieve to motivate myself when it does get grueling.

Is it true that programming is being flooded these days to lower wages?

There's definitely a learning curve, but you can get through it with a lot of hard work and patience. I took a look at the course and it's so weird they're cramming a bunch of different languages/frameworks:
>Languages include C, Python, SQL, and JavaScript plus CSS and HTML
That's way more than you need for a beginner… Imo I'd try to find a course that teaches good CS concepts solely based on one language, preferrably Python. Python is a great starting language since it's pseudocode-y and light.

What >>864837 said, choose one language and go from there, the most difficult part is understanding the theory and logic behind it, after that it gets easier and easier.
Every language has a general goal, figure out what is it that you want to do, find out which is the best language for that and start there.
A good thing to do also is understand the theory, why do algorithms work the way they do, data structures, that type of thing, it'll make your life easier.

Where do I go for my first working role now that physical career fairs are gone thanks to lockdown?

Probably not intentionally to lower wages but a lot of people think that it's a super easy and fast way to get big money so the market becomes saturated fast, kind of like what happened to camming

Thank you anons, I'll give it another go! I might try to look for something more interactive, I think that will really help me out. CS50 uses Scratch (made by MIT) for one or two lectures but it didn't really click in my head even though it's simplified enough for kids to learn coding with lol. I'm just really dumb to begin with but I really want to have a solid foundation because I know it'll only get harder and harder. I'll look around for different classes! I only started CS50 after browsing people's suggestions on reddit and someone said CS50 was dumbed down enough for them to get started with, but not dumbed down enough for the likes of me kek.

Ideally in the future I'd really like to get into machine learning or cybersecurity because I think those are the most interesting areas but I also think it's two super daunting areas to learn about.

You're not dumb, anon. It's definitely a nontrivial subject to study, especially by yourself. Remember to take it day by day!
