Its going to sound cliche, but I'm a big Stephen King fan. His books are always good "summer reads". They aren't too challenging, but they're told in a tone that really hooks me.
My favorite Stephen King book is Misery.
Pet Semetary is another good one if you're starting out. Ooh, or The Dark Half.
Look for his works from before he got hit by that van. His stuff after his accident didn't have the same effect on me.
