No. 65017

So, Barbie had a "makeover", meaning that she got three new body types: Curvy, Tall, and Petite. Now only that, but there are more eye colors and 7 skin tones available. The line is called Fashionistas. To avoid derailing other threads, I decided to make one to specifically discuss anything having to do with this new line of Barbie dolls.

No. 65018

the curvy one looks fat and ugly. I expect no little girl will want that shit and they'll have to sneak 'em in with regular barbies to make any sort of profit.

I think this is kind of cute. I'm sure collectors and re-painters are gonna have a blast with these.

No. 65024

The Barbie collector line has had some variation in hair colors, faces, and body types, going back many years. I was confused as to why they were introducing some of those features as if they were a new thing. The curvy and short bodies are new though. Personally I never saw my Barbie dolls as anything but a fantasy, but I guess if this new line helps little girls in a positive way then I'm happy about that.

No. 65025

I personally think some of the dolls from the line are cute. One of the negative things though, is the promotion of "overweight is beautiful!!"

No. 65027

I like that there's a petite one now. Very adorable.

No. 65028

Tumblr's reach has gone this far. What's next? Hijab Barbie?

No. 65035

As long as they don't literally put stretch marks/age spots/cellulite or some other ugly shit on them they'll do fine.

to me, the curvy ones don't really look that huge. just literally curvy and not dressed well for their figures.

No. 65041

This. They aren't huge and gross looking just your average curvy girl. Lol, you comment made me think of the episode of TM when Toccara was upset about how ugly the clothes were for Plus size models.

Fun fact, Mattel DID create a Muslim Barbie, but Muslims didn't like it because they didn't think Barbie stood up to Islam's beliefs.

Funny you should mention little girls not liking her, because this article talks about how when they left the testing room and observed the girl's playing, the kids totally made fun of the curvy one. (part 4) http://time.com/barbie-new-body-cover-story/?xid=homepage

I was actually really disappointed. With the way they were going on about all the different skin tones, hairstyles, eye coulors, etc. I got my hopes up for custom dolls but they seem to only be talking about releasing specific 'character' dolls throughout the year.

I distinctly remember being able to design and order custom dolls way back in probably about 1999. (pic related) But nowadays their idea of 'custom' is picking one out of a handfull of pre-made barbies and choosing a couple different outfits for her.

Yes, I'm mad.

>tfw I will never order a petite barbie that looks like me

No. 65062

I think they're cute. The curvy ones are bigger than the "ideal" shown in the media, but I do believe that was the goal. The only thing I think will be very annoying is the different sizes for the clothes.

I think it mostly has to do with the combination of her proportions/arms making her look brick-shaped skinny fat + her older looking face + the bleach blonde hair

Not the body on it's own, but the whole of the doll (especially when compared to the original counter part)

iirc, they made this barbie using average measurements so it all depends on how they interpreted the measurements. A 37inch bust could be huge boobs or a flat-chested chubby person. a 38inch hip measurement could be a big ass or wide hips.

Most young women I see don't look like "normal barbie". They don't look like regular barbie either, tbf, but I don't understand why they always make "regular" women look like squat hobbits.

No. 65115

But normal Barbie was already curvy.

No. 65125

I like the petite Barbies. I mean, when I was younger, I was never triggered by Barbies (or Bratz or MyScene) being "tall", but I guess it's nice to see different sizes. Girls are going to have a party with their imagination now.

This made me sad and laugh at the same time. It basically describes lolcow if you can imagine it.

I bet that lil girl grows up to be fat.

No. 65333

Tbh, I think it's weird they're making such a fuss of the "curvy" barbie, considering all it is is that she has wide hips and thicker thighs. That's literally the new standard of attractiveness. It isn't like it's groundbreaking, revolutionary shit, they're just keeping Barbie conventionally attractive to keep sales numbers up. She's not fat, she's what is currently considered "beautiful." Perhaps not everyone's type or preference, and personally not mine either, but generally speaking everyone is all about dat fat ass, and Mattel knows that. They haven't done this to be more diverse, they've done this to keep up with the trends because profit.

No. 65348

This. It's just a barbie with a nicki minaj ass and just as unrealistic proportions as the original one. Why did they feel this was necessary?

its not the children complaining about the body issues Barbie gives them
its the fucking adults
as a child i was a fat fuck who was bullied but NEVER did i play with my barbies and went ''oh wow i wish i looked like that''
seriously, grown ass women should stop projecting their own feelings and insecurities onto little girls

but i do agree, different skin colours is nice

No. 65535

I would have probably liked the idea of having a bunch of different-looking Barbies for my Barbie town as a kid tbh. I distinctly remember being annoyed that I only had blonde Barbies (I was a blonde kid) because it felt like my dolls were talking to clones of themselves instead of a distinct character.

Also, I like that curvy Barbie isn't obese by any means and could easily read as "athletic" if dressed the part. Tumblrinas don't understand that dolls of adult women are supposed to allow little girls to act out their fantasies, and no little girl aspires to be a hamplanet. They want to be human-sized astronauts or vets, or at least be someone who's able to fit into the seats of that sweet convertible.

No. 65539

>>65360
Actually, at the time, all little girls had to play with were those fake babies, so they went crazy over Barbie because she was a beautiful and fashionable woman who wore adult clothes and did adult things. When you're a little girl, you can't wait to grow up so you can go out shopping with friends, attend parties, go out dancing, etc. and with Barbie, these little girls could do all that using their imagination PLUS more as the franchise grew and included Barbie with multiple careers.

I don't think people are serious. I have seen men complain that a big deal is made about unrealistic beauty standards in girl toys, when boy toys have huge steroid muscles. I think that's where that shit is coming from. Pic related was a meme I saw going around.

imo, everybody needs to calm down about what is only a toy. Any girl or woman that gets self-esteem issues from a hunk of plastic reflects on something terribly wrong with that person's perception of reality. Which is why people like Valeria Lukyanova are such huge cows.

The term dadbod is so infuriating. It's basically a way for fat guys to say "it's okay! I'm a dad.i can be lazy and not work out and watch what I eat." when there's zero excuse to do this. Getting older can be difficult, but it doesn't force anything to stop giving a shit. Men with guts and no muscle are repulsive, just like women who give up and not work out and are saggy are gross.

No. 65597

There is such a thing as fat acceptance, though, and it's mostly for women.

I personally hate both the current state of affairs and the ideal world where fat will be hailed as attractive too. I don't think it's media's job to say what's attractive and what isn't (though I'm not sure it's possible to stop doing that. Needs further though).

I don't think "dadbod" is any more positive than "curvy" is. Some people attempt to use it in a positive or ironic light, to shield themselves and improve their self-image, but other people generally view it negatively. Dadbod and curvy seem like equivalent terms.

No. 65685

The dwarf one with the brown hair is a stereotypical hispanic. I live in a mainly black and hispanic neighborhood and you see women who look like that here fairly often, however, they're fatter in person. It looks bad both in doll form and irl.

Curvy can exist at different sizes and levels of health. You can be chubby and curvy or thin and curvy.

"Dadbod" just means out of shape with a beer gut, but it is used more positively.

Take Leo Dicaprio for example. He's allowed to look like this while still being a sex symbol, but most actresses fear being called curvy in magazines. Its almost passive aggressive.
