She’s middle aged. My mum actually doesn’t like her but she has three sons she was passing her Ana habits on too so my mum stuck around for them. She would feed them and try to undo the damage their mum was doing. They moved in with their paternal grandmother and had a growth spurt. They’re all healthy now, so my Mum took a step back on the friendship. She’s too old to be helped unless she seeks it for herself. Not to mention the lack of food makes her an emotional, exhausted mess, and all she talks about is excercise and her job. And she’s knowledgable about health (considering her job, she should be) that there’s nothing anyone can say that she doesn’t already know. I’m pretty sure she’s using her knowledge to keep herself on the brink of death, but not actually dead.

I can’t imagine what patients must think. It’d be like going to a dentist with bad teeth.

Are you a grown adult nurse trying to convince us you're the best things in the world by using the term "haters"?
Also don't get me wrong, the job of being an RN is really difficult and not everyone could do it without quitting or getting fired. It takes hard work and is quite intense and nurses really deserve more appreciation as many people will disregard them, but saying that nurses are "smart, cute, and perfect" is just really cringy and it doesn't sound like the type of thing an actual proper, mature nurse would say.
Also, given the fact that anyone can become a nurse (sorry, but that program is so easy, and all you need is your one bachelor degree to do it) and people who can't get into med or pre-med do it as well as people who can't figure out what to do (and that's not going into nurse practitioners who don't even go to university but do a two year college degree) means that the workforce is filled with people who are not exactly the best people in the world for the job. These people don't stay long and typically aren't given the best or most important tasks but from a patient's point of view it can utterly ruin a hospital experience which isn't fun to begin with. Working in a long-term care hospital I've had so many patients hate and feel neglected by the nurses. Part of the problem was that they were understaffed but a lot of the nurses were lazy and didn't care for the patients and the trend was that nurse practitioners were the worst and most rude which is likely due to how they got there. On the other side of the coin though, the "rude" abrassiveness of many nurses is common but it isn't them being rude or trying to be, it's just their efficiency working overtime which does usually ignore typical social graces but that's to be expected and patients should realise that a nurse isn't your mother and isn't there to comfort you. They're here to help you and the doctor so you can be fixed as soon as possible. Also they have no time for your flirting. Literally and figuratively

Where do YOU live that they get underpaid? In the US they are paid like royalty and get paid around 100k plus in California, many FOB that come here make sure to become nurses/ medical field to get that sweet salary and benefits. My friend is in the process of becoming a nurse and now he thinks he's an expert on all things medical to a really insufferable level. On quite a few occasions he insisted on things that were factually incorrect, very much with the "well, I'm a nursing student so I'm the one who knows what they're talking about here" bitchy type of attitude… only to be proven wrong when I looked up whatever we were discussing. This includes psychology related topics, which is especially annoying since they're barely even taught anything about psychology unless they're training to be psych nurses (which he is not).

Also, it drives me crazy when people complain about nurses being underappreciated when they make so much fucking money in the US. Which they should, but the idea that they're getting the short end of the stick because ~doctors get more praise~ is fucking dumb when they make more money than almost any other profession requiring the same amount of schooling. If you make 70k right out of college, do not fucking complain about people not praising you enough.

My father has to stay in the hospital quite regularly and what I've found is that nurses are so fucking incompetent. Some examples:

-Nurse had needle break off while INSIDE him
-Most nurses need multiple tries to get the needle in. like, what the fuck, this is your job, I get it happening once but a majority of the time?? if a majority of the time a mcdonald's employee just dropped the burgers, they'd be fucking fired
-Nurse didn't put the medication in the correct position so it didn't drop into the thing they put in his arm
-Nurse forgot to give him the medication, he asked the doctor who confirmed it should've been given to him every day during the stay
-Despite the fact that each stay the doctor plans the same treatment for him, multiple nurses have ignored these treatments thinking they know better than the fucking doctor, only for him to have to stay longer than the doctor's initial guesstimate

Seeing the treatment of my father makes me glad I've never had to go to the hospital, holy fuck.

I generally have had really great nurses, but a year and a half ago I went to A&E with really severe stomach pain (I couldn't walk so I was wheeled out of an ambulance and given morphine as soon as I was seen). They shoved me in some room by myself because apparently no one knew where I was supposed to be going, and the woman treating me took my blood sugars, gave me a glucose drink, then tested them an hour later and said "these are even lower (untrue), you threw the drink out didn't you?". I cried, promised her I had taken it but told her I was really anorexic and it was difficult for me to drink another and that I had always had low blood sugars because of my weight. She started bitching about me to the other nurses right outside my door, called me 'manipulative' and a liar and said I'd poured both drinks away, even though she'd clearly seen me drink one and I don't know what she thinks I did with the other one when I couldn't even stand up.

I've had a mixed bag of experiences with nurses here in the UK. In hospital, generally they're busy but efficient. Outpatient they have a bit more time to be nice. Inpatient psych, mental health nurses can be vindictive and brutal. I've seen them induce breakdowns in patients.

No. 410923

i actually work in a hospital, around nurses every day.

most of them are not terrible people. they have to answer to asshole doctors, asshole surgeons, asshole patients. they have to work very long hours. there's a gross attitude of nurses eating their own (my hospital highly discourages this but it can still happen) so sometimes they don't have any support at work when they feel overwhelmed. they are often understaffed (just like my department is. working in a hospital, you realize how pretty much everyone is understaffed.) they suffer compassion fatigue.

it's true there are a lot of shitty nurses who only got into the job because it's "easy" in that you will definitely get hired since it's a high-demand job, you just have to get through the schooling, which is tough and gives you very little free time for years.

that said the whole "all nurses are angels" thing is corny as hell and it's laughable to think all nurses are amazing people. many of them are. one of my friends is one of the most compassionate people i have ever met. she's eager to do all sorts of jobs people would hate to do (wipe an elderly person's ass for instance) because she hates seeing people in pain or distress. she wants to make everyone happy and comfortable. she's an awesome example of what a nurse should be, but often aren't.

That's a stupid comparison though because of how it's literally a trope to call politicians slimy and bad. You say the same about nurses and you get attacked because "omg they work so hard! they sacrifice so much!"

Yes, they have long hours and I am sure the pay isn't good. But literally a few extra years of schooling will make a major difference in that. An entry-level nursing position is exactly the same level of skill as a machine technician in a large factory. That's why they get paid respectively the same and have similar hours.

I feel the same way about Police and people in the military. "Omg they're putting their lives on the line! So brave!" No one is conscripted nowadays. It was a choice, and a lucrative choice at that considering the early retirement and helpful benefits.

california is probably THE BEST PLACE in the world to work as a nurse. i've never heard nurses from california complain. they have mandated patient-nurse ratios, and they're paid extremely well, even when you consider california's COL. all i hear from nurses in california is "i own a tesla, i have no debt, i take 3 vacations a year, and i'm about to buy a beautiful house. i work at a med-surg unit and only have 4 patients per shift, and i always get my breaks." while if you work as a nurse in toronto or vancouver or nyc…. you're probably going to need roommates and you'll probably live somewhere shitty. because you're not getting paid that much and the ratios will make you cry. i want to work in california once i get more experience.

Only the thread OP and my post is positive the rest is all "I know this girl who's a nurse and she's a psycho, fuck nurses"
They don't have any authority, they're literally the doctors, the patients and the patients relatives punching bag.
>in most countries
How would you know? Do you live "in most countries"? kek
In my country, they have to train for minimum 5 years - just to get paid close to nothing.
I'm genuinely curious, what are you gonna do if you fall ill and have to be at the mercy of those sociopaths?

Ah yes, and shitting on teachers is also many peoples favourite pasttime…

Here nurses, or any NHS staff, are typically seen as being selfless and dedicated because they work long hours for low pay, which isn't always true. The poor underpaid nurse is a narrative used against the government to get more funding for the NHS. The problem with that is that it creates the assumption that nurses are always virtuous and are above criticism. It can attract people that want to seen that way without putting in the work to deserve it.

nta but in my country (not poland), nurses get barely above minimum wage. Granted, minimum wage here is pretty decent and not america-level wage theft but still… It's a ridiculously low pay considering the work that's put into it.

I see! The low-earning nurses and teacher complaints made me think that anon might be Polish as well.

However, I must say that teachers are paid okay here (unlike nurses). We're talking 1400€ first year, buildable to above 2000€/month later in the carreer with holidays
