>>187003Thanks anon for making this, I've been stuck on a few of my cosplays and hoping this thread gets enough traction to get some advice!!! People really do know a lot of their stuff on here, and kinda funny to see moomoos thread sparked it
Any ways any advice on how to pattern Eliza's top from tekken tag rev2/7 top and sewing methods???

>>187005I'm an old cosplayer (not age old) so it was literally seeing older cosplayers like Yaya Han years ago and wanting to get on their level. So I kicked myself a new level with each cosplay I picked up.
Plus I'm now interested in making normal clothes for myself so I'm pleased that my years of costume making will benefit me in ordinary ways now (and maybe save me some money on some fucking cute dresses)

Anyone have any ideas on what materials to use when making a sailor moon wand? Or is it better to just buy the plastic ones?

>>187010Just looking off my own pattern collection maybe you can start off with Butterick 5761. It has the paneling you'd need for that top. I'm not sure how experienced you are in sewing so it need some modification for the bottom.
>>187005I just really like making costumes. Each project I can make something better. I think the whole cosfamous/paetron model/boudoir thing wouldn't annoy me so much if it wasn't for the fact like they're trying to pretend they care about seeing/crafting. Like your audience is generally people who wants sexy photos of you. Most of these people can't really see either, so the fact that they want to offer "cosplay advice" just makes me cringe.

So, I need some advice. I'm making Charlotte berserker class from Fire Emblem Fates and I want to know how should I go about the waist. This is my first armor cosplay and I really don't want to fuck it up (but since this my first armor cosplay, there will be flaws). I am gonna use EVA foam for most of this cosplay since that is all I can afford atm. The fur part is sorta getting me confused. Maybe there is a pattern I can use for it? How would I attach it to the waist?? Should I double layer the belt?

>>187046Sorry for the crude phone drawing. Based off that picture that's how the shape looks to me. You could easily sew that to a belt piece and have it under the armor.

>>190729Anon I think it's a good idea to contact them and ask to see what is going on. Two months is a pretty long time without any sort of communication from a commissioner (at least for me it is), so I think it's okay to send them a quick message to see what's up.

>>192782If I buy one then I normally go on ebay.
I and some friends bought some from ''professional'' websites and they were shit most of the time. Despite them asking for measurements they always fuck up. They made some pants 2 sizes smaller and a friend of mine ended up having a Cosplays in XXL or smth.
Anyways I have yet to find a good professional cosplay website. Also normally they are more expensive than ebay. Never really bought a really bad one from there either.

>>192782Suprisingly, the best places to buy cosplay for me have been Aliexpress, Taobao, and Ebay. Like what
>>192805 said, most "professional" sites aren't that much better than ebay quality. Also, a lot of these "professional" cosplay stores buy stuff in bulk on Taobao/alibaba and resell to make a quick profit, so there's no shame in buying a costume from an ebay-like shop. Also, Facebook selling\buying groups and storefronts like storenvy/etsy are okay if you want to buy someone's costume secondhand, but the options are pretty limited.

Like holy shit that is a cosplays I can't wait to do.
No. 199091
>>199068Depends on your material. For stuff like armor you could achieve a lot of textured looks simply from how you paint it.
Different fabric choices will help too. What are you looking to make?

>>505804I'm by no means experienced with sewing but I think investing in a semi decent sewing machine is worth it if you can afford it and have space for it. My machine was about $250, which isn't a drop in the bucket, but it's a step past Singer's beginner line of sewing machines and has lasted me almost 10 years with no real issues. On the other hand, my friend got a shitty $50 beginner Singer to start out and it shit itself not long after she got it (paid more in repairs than I did for my whole machine). Knowing even the basics of sewing is pretty handy so you can fix/alter your own clothes. Learning to handsew is quite tedious, but if you like to do sort of mindless things with your hands it's nice. Some costumes might also require both machine and hand sewing, for delicate parts or buttons or things that you're afraid of your machine fucking up on.
As for starting, buy easy patterns online/at your city's garment district if your city has one. Look at your clothes and the seams and look at how they're attached to get an understanding as to how to piece things together. Look up very easy sewing projects on youtube. Resources are endless nowadays. It can easily become overwhelming because of fabric choices, how to line and cut your pattern pieces out against the fabric, how to read patterns, etc., but really, just say fuck it and start making stuff. You can also start by making your own clothing patterns by tracing out basic shapes onto newspaper, or if you really want to, take apart a piece of clothing and see how all the pieces are shaped. You can break things down to like "how to sew a sleeve" or "how to sew (x shape item)" and probably find easier tutorials. Mood fabrics also has a whole section on their website somewhere with FREE patterns and tutorials!
I never formally learned how to sew. A lot of it from day one for me is "line up the two pieces of fabric at the edges (right sides together), put down the sewing foot of my machine, and GO" and 10ish years later it still works lol.
Also, whether you decide to sew or buy a machine, BUY FABRIC SCISSORS. Dedicated fabric scissors. Hide them from everyone you know and never ever use them for anything but fabric. Trust me. I used regular scissors for years but they're never sharp enough and will ruin your fabric and make your life absolute hell. They are the single most important thing to me after my machine.

>>505836I own a Singer 7258! My friend who owned that shitty singer upgraded to a Brother machine (I think it was the SE-400?? Honestly cannot remember the model or what it looks like lol) and it's also AMAZING, but roughly about $400… I'm a bit jealous of hers, but my machine gets shit done so whatever.
>>505863Glad to help anon! I hope you'll have fun! It might be worthwhile to sign up for local sewing classes or something too if you'd like! I think JoAnn's offers them and will give you machines to use to practice on.

>>505804I just dove into the deep end when I got into sewing and bought a sewing machine! Mine is a really basic singer I got for ~$114; I’d like something nicer in the future so I can do more elaborate stuff, but it does what I need it to do for now and I really like it.
https://vintagepatterns.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page^this is a vintage pattern wiki so you can look at/ print off some patterns for free. I haven’t looked at it in depth yet, my friend just sent it to me recently.
I started off sewing by doing simple alterations to my clothes and then experimenting with fabric scraps. Then I tried my hand at a medium difficulty cosplay and it went well! I was able to learn a lot from the experience. Youtube has a lot of really good resources along with sewing books and sewing panels at conventions. I would always go to those and take notes like a nerd lmfao. I think the most important thing for you to do is learn vocabulary! Learn the parts of your sewing machine, sewing terms/tools, clothing terms, etc.
>>505868 if you’re having trouble grasping concepts or would like to be able to ask questions then I also recommend sewing classes! You don’t need them to be successful though, so it’s okay if between fabric, patterns and a machine it’s already too much money and you can’t make the investment. Good luck!
