Yeah, it definitely seemed to start out that way. I don't think it's much of a "joke" as it is their own artistic direction and shit, though (they went through a bunch of these creative identities and concepts like Max Normal, Max Normal.tv, Constructus Corporation, Wad-E, etc). They talk a lot about deliberately being a huge, overblown embarrassment to South Africa because its actual pop culture is lame as fuck and all about trying to look like it comes from America. They're out to shit all over that.
Watkin (aka Ninja) talked about how while he was crafting this "white trash" persona, it literally felt more "real" to him than his actual identity, which is odd but cool.

I don't know what to make of Die Antwoord anymore. When $O$ came out there was confusion about whether or not they were real but it didn't take long before Ninja was revealed as "the Ali G of South Africa". People didn't mind though because at least the music was catchy and the lyrics funny.

Then when Ten$ion came out it's like everyone forgot it's meant to be a joke and somehow Yolandi became a fashion icon.

Ninja's actually a very smart guy and had a shit-ton of ideas and personas before arriving at what he has now (pretty sure this one got a bit "stuck" as a result of acting it out a little too well and a certain amount of it bled into who he is as an actual person off-stage, though).
Also, he and Neill Blomkamp are buddies IRL. Wouldn't be surprised if they generated that headline deliberately for publicity/controversy.
Everyone who's actually met Die Antwoord IRL is usually bewildered by how normal they really are.

i like them, but here's the thing: when they were set out to make "bad music" intentionally. these days their music sounds like they started taking this shit seriously since they were received so well and decided to produce some actual, catchy dance-pop-rap tunes. but they're not good enough (or the right kind of) musicians for that, so right now it sounds way tamer, it's basically half-assed pop crap. still fun to dance to tho.

I started off hating Die Antwoord but after listening to a few of there songs I fell in love with them.

They quit their old record-company because it wanted them to become more mainstream in America, but I feel like they're doing than anynow now with Chappie and Ugly boy.
While I don't dislike ugly boy, it's way different from their other songs I feel. It's completely in correct English, and has simple love-themed lyrics. (As opposed to for example Raging zef boner or Wat kyk jy)
