Have you ever lost an important file? This thread is for all anons to share stories and vent about work documents or assignments getting corrupted or deleted, having their computers die on them, lost art, photos and/or other content of sentimental value, gotten locked out of their accounts on sites (or unfairly banned), tried to revisit a favorite site, only to find it's been shut down and all their memories are gone with it, etc. Maybe even a hopeful story about finding a backup you forgot about, or an unexpected way to recover old data. Anything goes.

interesting thread. I once was fighting online(as i often do) and the only thing that could have proved my claim as true was an image i did, which i deleted like a retard.

I know that feeling. Literally having proof, but it's somehow gone or missing when you actually need it.
Not the same, but related to the topic. Recently, a document that was very important to me got corrupted with no previous versions or recent backups available, and I feel an acute sense of loss and regret about it. It had a mix of passwords and other things I can't get back. I really wish I had backed it up. Aside from the obvious material loss, I think there's a sort of unspoken emotional aspect to these sorts of things. It just sucks, but it helps to know you're not alone.

I don’t remember what was wrong with it but one time my Iphone just stopped working and they said they couldn’t get the data out and I fucking fell to the Apple store floor and almost started crying. I’m still sad about it, years worths of precious memories of people and pets I’ve lost and text messages. I’ve been meaning to help my family keep digital backups of all our physical photo albums just in case those could be lost or destroyed.

Kinda related, I had the dumbest fucking brain fart moment once. I wrote down my passwords in a notebook, I started pre planning on changing parts of one and instead of just writing it down underneath the current one I fucking started erasing the parts of the current password I wanted to change (like changing a 7 to a $). Realized 5 seconds later I couldn’t change my password without knowing the current one so I had to squint and rub my fingers on the page to see/feel the parts that I erased like a dumbass.

Ngl I thought only old people wrote their passwords in notebooks. Have you tried a password manager?

Yes I have one now. That was a while back, I still do use a notebook for some though it’s just easy and I know the notebook is safe unless it gets destroyed.

My friend moved a bunch of files to an SD card that already had stuff on it, but days later, all the recently moved stuff just vanished. The SD card is showing the same amount of free space as the approx. size of the stuff that got added. She kept it in her car so I feel like maybe it was messed up by cold temperatures but idk. She's confident that it transferred just fine before she put the card away.
She's super devastated and I don't really know what to do. It's so strange, it's not like the whole card was wiped, it's just the new files she added and those were immensely important to her.

A few years ago I lost my phone while on holidays and the several thousand photos and videos that I had on it. I was a dumbarse and should have backed them up before I left but never got around to it.

My last computer blue screened on me and I had lost a lot of videos I had archived, some cow related. I'm so annoyed I didn't make a back up of it because now all the videos are privated or deleted. I'm now making it a point to archive anything and everything I like and back them up separately from my puter. Luckily I backed up personal/sentimental photos and stuff to other drives so I at least have that.

Tbh this should be a more common thing with everyone. I write down my stuff into a notebook to keep track or in case my computer decides to die. I tell my parents to never trust technology with your stuff and to always have backups. I always keep track of what emails are connected to what accounts too.

Not to sound like a bitch but keeping the only copy of her files on an SD card was a pretty stupid move, keeping it in her car too was also just begging for something to happen. That being said, if the files really did get moved she can probably try to recover them (though it sounds like the SD is dying)

I have an old ipad with me that I used when I went to high school (it was given to every student to use instead of books) and it had all kinids of data, essays I did, old contacts, files from my old professors and such. Nearly 3 years of school files. As you know IOS backups the data with iTunes.
So one time I decide to format the thnig (after doing the backup) because the ipad was starting to get very slow and unusable, but it was functioning and I didn't want to just throw it away so I tried to clean up the system a bit. Except the fucking iTunes app decided, without warning, to set a password on the backup. It didn't ask me to put a password, it's not the same password as the iTunes account, it's just a random password the app desiced to set on its own. After some research I found out that apparently it's a bug that happens sometimes, so now I have the backup file but I can't access it.

In university I was in one course about learning a software. My final project was stored on USB stick and it got corrupted. I had more than enough time to just restart my work, but I came to dislike that course and it was during the lockdowns and I lost all my motivation so I paid Best Buy to recover my data instead of doing it again. I just wanted that course to be done asap. I think it was $80.

In school years ago I got an assignment to ask an older relative to tell a story and write it down to preserve. My grandpa told me all about his childhood that he never really opened up about to anybody and I got a great story out of it. He recently passed away. I had the assignment on an old hard drive along with other old stuff going back to 2001, the repair guy said it was too corrupted to get any data off it and I’m bitterly disappointed about it.
