Plus, I forgot to add how do so many youngsters afford trips to Japan? Like, where do people in their teens/early adulting usually stay? That sorta thing

If you want to be an idol id suggest going to akiba and singing on the side walk. Ive seen girls with their little signs and cds promoting themselves that way.

Peach airlines has some cheap (domestic) roundtrip deals throughout the year iirc. I mostly used them and Jetstar for domestic flights (but never used the peach deals).

I stayed at some airbnb's when I was going around kyoto and tokyo bc I'm dirt poor, but the places I stayed at were really great!!

i'm not really any help but i'd really appreciate some budget tips too… i'm gonna be studying in tokyo for a year and i'm scared out of my mind about dorm rent+other expenses already oTL

How much should I bring around for a non school trip. I went before for schooling, and a lot of expenses were in the budget/paid for. This time I feel like going to Tokyo for whatever reason. Money is not an issue, but the currency rate from country is getting kinda iffy, so I rather exchange sooner than later, y'know?

Also, which airline offer cheap flights from Canada. My mum and I thought of driving to NJ and flying from there, if it's cheaper.

I can't recommend you a specific airline, but I do highly recommend using statravel.com to book your flight since you can get good deals as a student!

i'm going to south korea for a week and japan for a week in february. i have relatives in japan, but i don't speak to them, so they don't really count. planning on taking about $1k there including accommodations, since i use hostels. i went to seoul by myself two years ago when i was 22 and was 100% fine despite not speaking any korean.

hopefully 1k will be enough!

probably youth hostels or just regular hostels. that's where i'm planning on staying. just like >>157020 said, airbnb.

How big are food expenses for a student (exchange) in Tokyo?
Is it possible not to blow too much money on food if you cook at home, sometimes eat at university cafeteria?

Don't go to japan on exchange or whatever. I know you think it would be fun uber kawaii shit but really japanese schools are hardcore as fuck and you'll want to be dead. Their math program is way ahead of ours and everyone must get an A, it's not a good place to be a weeaboo you'll just seem really foolish and people will laugh at you in your J fashion

Yeah, alot of weebs go over thinking it'll be like animu and kawaii but they get upset when it's just like normal school and japanese dont really give ten shits about them

jus sayin

Nah I am not really going for the animu life experience (there is hardly any college life anime out there, right?).
I interacted with actual Japanese people (every year they come for a short exchange at my uni and people who know some japanese gotta take them around, some give them homestay etc) so I know they are not "just like in my animus."
I'm going mostly because I want to brush up my Japanese skills especially speaking since it's lacking.

But I gotta admit, I look forward to Tokyo since it's a huge city and I live in the middle of nowhere (I'm not from the US). I also wanna see how their universities are like.

I got scholarship from JASSO and a room in on-campus dormitory (which is not expensive) but still my own budget is limited and I know Tokyo is pricey so I'm kinda worried about stuff like food expenses.

I'm sure this belongs in another thread, but since it revolves around me studying abroad in Japan, here it goes:

Man, I got into study at Meiji University and I was so god damn fucking pumped. I was like HELL YEAH I get to study in Tokyo and it's gonna be great, but I just got my housing info today and I got into the worst fuckign dorm possible (it's one of two most expensive, but has a shit ton more rules and shitty coin operated shower (while the other most expensive is the best w no rules and apparently everyone goes to hang out there anyway). Housing and expenses have been stressing me out to no end since I got accepted, and I've had to constantly talk myself into staying because, hey! it's studying in Japan! I get to continue my language studies (bc my uni in the states doesnt offer past intermediate) and live in Japan for 11 months.

But learning about my housing situation has just destroyed any last bit of me caring, and now I can't find any will to go at all. I already bought my plane ticket and everything, but I just don't care at this point… I don't even want to go.

Anyone have advice for surviving? Or even any great things to go and do to even make my out of classroom experience even worth it anymore? I studied in Nagasaki, and stayed in Tokyo for a week for sight seeing, and I feel like a lot of the initial charm has really gone away for me now. :( pls farmers, i want to enjoy this experience, i really do, but my shit housing is making me feel so bad and regretful of everything.

I know people can get irritated about dorms being shit, but even if it's not so good, you'll get used to it and have a good time…after all dorm is mostly for sleeping and studying. Tokyo has so many things to offer, you are not going to the middle of nowhere anyway.

Trust me, I survived eastern european dorms and still had fun (hell, i have one of the best memories from there)

Does anyone from the UK ever go to Japan for uni? It's always either aussies or americans…

Seriously?? Dude, if you were all excited about it just GO. And be thankful if they DO enforce the rules because my dorm when I studied abroad was an effing nightmare. No one followed the rules and most of the American students went out drinking all the time because "OMG GAIZ WE'RE LEGAL HERE" and came back wasted and woke everyone up and almost got all of the foreigners kicked out.

Hopefully your dorm will be a quiet, chill place to study. Which is what you will definitely need. Then you can have a blast in the actual city and seeing stuff and doing stuff.

Just GO AND ENJOY. Really. Your dorm isn't that big of a deal. I recommend studying abroad to anyone, and if you have an interest in Japan you won't regret this experience (I've never been to Japan but c'mon, clearly it's something you wanted to do).

Thanks guys! I was being really silly. :(

I talked to a friend whose there now and he really reassured me about it since his girlfriend lives at that dorm and she doesn't seem to mind it. I looked at the virtual tour of it too and the place is so much more gorgeous than I ever anticipated…!! Now my only worry is scrambling to pay for several months of rent up front since my financial aid doesn't come in until AFTER I've landed in Japan… haha…

When I was in Nagasaki, we had about a handful of kids who weren't Americans. There were about 80 of us in total; two were from the UK, one was from France, and another one was German or something.
