Time for a minor Libertines interlude? I don't think anyone's posted anything about "You're my Waterloo", the love song Peter Doherty wrote for Carl.
It’s one of the oldest tunes they have, but wasn’t properly recorded until their comeback album, although Pete has played it at various points in his solo career, sometimes even dedicating it to Carl.
The two have waffled between pretending that it’s not about Carl at all, but about a girl, or that it’s not a love song but actually about brotherhood, and admitting that it’s clearly about him. There are some great interviews where they try to talk their way out of any implications.
The lyrics are full of references to Carl, and to things that only mean something to Peter and Carl. Waterloo is apparently Carl’s favourite station in London, and he used to work as a theatre usher at the Old Vic after uni (incidentally, Carl claims he only studied drama because all the fit girls were there).
When they recorded the song, they also decided to have the music video show a young couple, and the director (who worked with Carl on the video) said he wanted to “hold a mirror up to Peter and Carl’s relationship”. Make of that what you want. These days, they get to sing it as a duet ♥
