They're just especially likely to latch onto some comfort medium from when they were kids because the developmental weirdness makes them continue being interested in that media far beyond the 'acceptable' range.

I think the status quo draws in people who are obsessed with routine and don't like drastic changes.
The show has changed alot during the years but it's subtle changes. A season 2 episode does not feel like a season 10 episose but if you watch them in chronological order it feels like a natural transition. Also the fact it has been running for so long might appeal to people who likes routine. They get to watch new episodes and experience new stories without having to familiarise themselves with a new settings and new characters

It's like mildly cringe but generally wholesome and silly entertainment to me, even though some of the posters seem to take it very seriously. They'll post confessions of love, photos of dates with their plushies, advice on dealing with haters, occasional breakup announcements, and lots and lots of pictures. I came across this aot fan on tumblr who runs a smut headcanon blog about guys from the show. Her specialty is that she makes these masterposts with bunch of links that lead to mostly softcore onlyfans porn videos on twitter(almost all of them are deleted by now though), with each group of videos having an aot moid/pairing assigned to them. I like to think because its the most recent tragedies that's happened on American soil that affected everyone alive at that time and will affect future Americans that have yet to be born. compared to most other tragedies its still pretty recent so its probably fascinating for autists that were alive during the exact moments to keep revisiting the emotions they felt that day.
