A thread for everything doll related.
Stuff like Sylvanian Families/Calico critters and Nendoroid dolls are also welcomed. If you can put on clothes and pose them, they're dolls.

Not my pic, but I recently found this My Friend Jenny doll at a little antique shop near me. She's so adorable, I love her sweet expression. Her torso and upper arms are made of cloth so she's very comforting to hold and reminds me of my old Holly Hobby rag dolls ♥ She's from Fisher Price, there are other dolls in the line but on the packaging she's advertised alongside a blonde doll named Mandy who I think is just adorable and am considering buying on ebay. I love when dolls have other friends in the line, like OG Barbie and Midge, I always pretend they're girlfriends.
Side note, but does anyone here collect larger dolls like these? If so, how do you display them? I just never feel like I have enough room to do it properly.

>>215855I think you could buy one or two dolls like Licca chan or this
>>215841 because they're quite small and don't take much space at all. Picrel, they are almost half the size of a Barbie, and with some smart choices you can get Barbie clothes to fit them. Liccas can get a bit pricey, but you could get it second hand without breaking the bank, or you could even buy separate parts on AliExpress and make you custom one for cheaper.
Example of a link for Licca heads:
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPhpyR8They also have a body in that listing, but here's another body that is more posable, and although a bit bigger, also fits a Licca head (but it's pricier too):
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPhpyR8I'm parcial to clothes collecting rather than doll collecting, because I personally think it's more fun to own many clothes and a few dolls and create scenes/looks with them rather than many dolls that only have one or two fixed outfits. So for clothing, you can get them at AliExpress, local flea markets or thrift stores, toy stores that sell doll clothes, or even learn how to sew them yourself, which I highly recommend! It's a very rewarding hobby and you can put it to use for your own clothes as well. And it's cheaper: I've used old t-shirt's sleeves to make a whole t-shirt for my dolls, baby socks, left over fabric from making masks or stuff like that. You can have a lot of fabric variety! Also it's great for your hand coordination.
Either way, good luck, anon!

Yeah, those are their best sellers because they are cheap and for small kids that like the excitement of opening a thousand wrappers. I don't know why you even bothered with these tbh
They are also not very comparable to RH, but yeah, MGA will sell it for profit and they are greedy (it's a big toy company after all), it's just that RH dolls are probably costlier to make because of the reasons I gave, so they will be very expensive. 80 is too much, I agree, but well, you don't have to buy it.

Please do not buy recasts, you will get a subpar item made my a shady company that indiscriminately steals from small artists. Most BJD companies are just a few people and even Volks is a small business. Fairyland the maker of Minifee is already lacking, so you will get a shitty copy of a shitty doll. Reading this thread has reminded me of my longtime dream of wanting to make a BJD of my husbando, so I decided to start researching on what kind of doll would I like it to be. I ended up deciding that I'll most probably just buy a Kid Delf since they're my favorite size and I don't really trust the cheaper BJD companies for some reason or another (or maybe it's just because I find their faces ugly even when the bodies they do are just fine) and then customize it into my husbando as I sew the wig and all of his clothes.
Doll nonas that know far more than I do, any advice for me?
No. 217271
>>217260>The most important thing is making sure you get the doll you love the most. Ignore any advice to get a starter or a cheaper doll! It took me too many years to learn that you can really only start to enjoy the doll if it's one you love.Thank you a lot! This really makes me glad to have heard about because I'm sure I was just about to start falling into that meme.
>Luts is a good company with very good quality, so it's a good choice. I kind of guessed so already, and I'm pretty sure that I was probably on the right since as I said on my first post, my gut feelings weren't exactly positive about the cheaper doll vendors for some reason or another.
>Have you ever sewed a wig and clothes before? If not, you might waste a lot of materials learning, so keep that in mind. Not really, but I'm willing to learn along the way and since I don't live in the US I don't think purchasing the clothing (except for maybe the shoes) off someone else wouldn't be worth it due to price and such.
>I hope you can bring your husbando to life. Also, join Den of Angels as soon as you can. The hobby is a lot more fun with friends and there is information you can only get if you ask for it.Thanks,
nonnie. Personally the main reason why I feel like joining it is so I can know the waiting times for certain stuff to ship home and perhaps some other obscure tips I can't get off public web resources, but I could very well do so in the future!

>And a good wig helps a ton.Really? I wonder if that means buying an actual wig and just styling it to look like my husbando's hairstyle would be the better option over doing everything myself, although considernig that I can't sew it probably would be worth the money in case I screw up my own wig.
>I hope you get your dream doll, anon. Luts is a great choice. Thanks nonna, from what I've seen most people seem to agree with Luts being one of the better choices, and I also really like their aesthetic when it comes to how they make their dolls look like.

Many dolls are sold blank with no eyes, no painting, no clothes, no hair. You can customize them to your liking. $300~$600 is enough for a nice doll. You can go cheaper without settling for a recast, but it will probably be a smaller doll.

The only ones I follow are cocoriang on insta, but their dolls are more anthropomorphized than realistic. Theres also walloyamorring I follow on there, their dolls tend to range from more realistic to very chibi like.
Its difficult finding artists of animal bjds because many are just hobbyists who mainly collect. And I don't really care much to follow pages where the user blogs about their doll hobby I just want to see cute dolls so I don't follow. So unfortunately I don't have many recommendations.
I added the pic as an example of walloyamorrings work.

I’ve been relentlessly waiting for G3 Abbey’s design for months. I refused to buy any other doll from the line because I knew she would be the best one.

>>276114I don't really like how Abbey looks in the cartoon, so my expectations for the doll were low. I think in general, G3 suffers from slapping a monster-related graphic tee on characters (like Ghoulia and Lagoona) and calling it a day, and it's really lazy compared to the thought-out personal styles of G1. I really do miss Abbey's fur-trimmed dress and boots.
But something about this doll is just so damn appealing to me. Abbey is my favorite Monster High character. I don't know what it is, but somehow this doll just looks better than the cartoon despite it being the same design. Maybe it's her face sculpt?
No. 276964
>>276951>G3 suffers from slapping a monster-related graphic tee on charactersnta but that's my problem with G3 too. Aside from some prints on their clothes they are bad at incorporating elements from their monster origins. Abby is a yeti and her G1 design had some elements that is associated with snow and yetis. Her G1 dress looked like it was made from the same fabric wintercoats are, her pants/leggings looked like ski underwear and she wore winter boots. She also had a lot of white fur which makes you think of a yeti. While her g3 counterpart is wearing a croptop with torn-up pants which feels very summer-y(adding snowflake prints does not automatically make an outfit seem winter-y). Her g1 design isn't practical winter wear either but there are some associations with winter wear which is great character design for a snow-themed character. While I do think her g3 outfit is cute it looks like a generic y2k outfit and if I had no prior knowledge of Monster High I wouldn't believe anyone who told me that she was based of a yeti.
Her doll is really cute though. I agree that she looks much better than the cartoon. they made her face really beautiful

>>312936Repainting without using something for 'tooth' (like msc or liquidtex) is pretty difficult as plastic dolls and especially playline dolls won't 'hold' paint or build color very well because of the texture of the plastic. It's too smooth.
If you do complete a repaint w/o msc or some kind of primer/fixative, you're definitely going to see flaking and damage. Maybe not immediately but msc helps preserve the paint/watercolor pencils/whatever so it won't get damaged. Not only that, if you don't put a protective coat down before you paint, you run a much higher risk of permanently staining the doll because the plastic will absorb the pigments you use. So good luck to that guy ever redoing or removing facepaint lol

>>339040For starting out all you should need (if I'm not forgetting anything) would be
>acetone/nail polish remover (only use on vinyl, it will eat away at other plastics>watercolor pencils (you can use a cheap brand in the beginning til you decide if this is a hobby you really enjoy, then I'd recommend stepping up to better brands like Faber Castell. The cheaper the watercolor the more layers you'll likely have to apply.>hard pastels, they can be of any quality from what I've heard/experienced. >MSC - Mister Super Clear. The best sealant, it's thin and clear but also toxic>on that note, you'll need a respirator mask or the fumes when you're spraying their facesThere's a lot more precise information online. I'd highly recommend Dollightful's videos, they're really informational on tricks and tips (though I'd recommend her earlier ones, the last I saw of hers she had been leaning hard into wetting the watercolors, which makes detailing more difficult/impossible. Moonlight Jewel is another great face-up youtuber, and Culur does a lot of amazing face-ups, though she never saves those livestreams, but you can check some out on her IG. I hope you enjoy the hobby and give a happy second life to the dolls!

>>339040Welcome to the hobby, anon!
I would also like to add
>>339636 that you'll need a primer, especially for vynil dolls. Honestly, if you are starting out, you don't need MSC as a sealant and the primer could also be something a bit cheaper, just check out some online reviews as to make sure they are not so cheap that they'll be sticky even when dry. Some mid-range quality is the best for starting out, I think.
I would also recommend getting started with thrifted or bootleg dolls (thrifted is best I think) and preferrably, dolls with bigger heads, as they are more forgiving. Barbies have very small proportions and are usually smiling with an open mouth, that can be more challenging to paint at the beginning. Monster highs, disney dolls and maybe even LOL OMGs and Bratz have a bigger head and more eye space for you to experiment with. I also think a bit of varnish for the lips and eyes can look really cute, you could use maybe a shiny clear nail polish if you don't want to invest on a bottle of varnish and just use it a little.
Anyway, hopefully you enjoy it! Try not comparing yourself to pros and enjoy the process, it can be super relaxing and rewarding.
Good luck,
nonnie!

For customization, faceups are just like any other doll faceups and use the same tools. Most people get their eyechips from CoolCats or you can get custom ones on Etsy. I sew clothes for all of my dolls but you can find handmade clothes on Etsy too.

God I hate this so MUCH. I hate these wretched beasts. Toralei looks so GAUDY AND TACKY. She is so fucking ugly in this pack it's driving me insane. The tail tambourine is cute though I won't deny that.
And then MEOWLODY, MY BELOVED MEOWLODY HOW THEY KILLED HER. The top half is cute. Sure, I'm a sucker for a pink/black combo, sue me. But holy mother of god, that FUCK UGLY FUGLY red skirt with the gold decals…. those god-forsaken purple turd blob boots. How and why did they fail this doll so hard? How is that even possible or allowed? What was the purpose?
And why the fuck do they look kind of purple?

Compare these cohesive designs to what Meowlody is wearing in g3. Meowlody and Toralei are SO overwhelming in the g3 stock photo. I just can't wrap my brain around the red skirt and purple boots because the vision of the top half is very clear but then they fuck it up with the bottom half. I've recently become obsess with nendoroid doll after I bought one recently. I want to dress up my fav nendoroid doll in a lot of cute outfits and take cute photos of her. Unfortunately, the official nendoroid doll outfits are super expensive. So I want to try out sewing the outfits myself. I did some research and there's an official Nendoroid Doll Clothes Sewing Patterns Book but unfortunately it's in Japanese and the book is super expensive. But I did find this website that sells an e-book version but I'm not sure if I can trust the site? Is there a good free Nendo Doll Outfit pattern out there for newbies to try? Or should I just bite the bullet and try my luck buying the e-book?
Here's the website link btw. They sell a lot of other interesting doll related e-books as well.

What are your thoughts on the new monster high g1 style doll Lenore Loomington? I think her concept had so much potential, a Victorian garden ghost sounds like it would be amazing but the execution is just shit. I’ve seen a lot of people complain about her hair being unstyled and I agree, it looks so plain and unfinished and is a ripoff for the price. They should’ve given her a Victorian style half updo like Winona ryder in Dracula. I also wish her dress was more of a Victorian silhouette or made it like a nightgown. Also all of these new g1 style dolls have ugly faces tbh

I'm not super into Pullip, but I've always wanted the Tuxedosam one. Sadly by the time I found out about Pullip they were already out of my budget.
>>369645This is what they're trying to pass as a gen 1 styled doll? Looks like a gen 2 with articulation. Her face is so… cute. And that's not meant to be a compliment.
>$75Holy shit, I knew Mattel was scamming people with the gen 1 dolls, but this is just egregious. Might as well save that money and buy a real collector doll from literally any other doll company.

>>369674It’s just so disappointing because I think she could’ve been great! Seeing fan redesigns really made me angry at the wasted potential. I wish she had hair that was actually styled, a nightgown or Victorian style funeral garb with a veiled headpiece, maybe some victorian style laceup riding boots, more flower/rose motifs, lace, gloves, a raven pet as a nod to Edgar Allan Poe (and since operetta already has a pet spider!), and a face paint that looks more sad. They could’ve done so much with that price point but they cheaped out.

I want to collect a few living dead dolls but they’re usually sold for way too much on eBay considering their quality. A lot of them are kinda ugly and the cool ones are usually the most expensive.

Does anyone who's been collecting Monster High know when or if Catty Noir would be getting a new doll with a different outfit? I like her base doll but hate her outfit. I've never had or kept up with MH releases so I don't know how many alternate dolls they have for side characters.

I cannot tell a single soul about this but I'm utterly obsessed with Wydowna Spider. I have four dolls (SDCC Webarella and 3 I Heart Fashion releases), and I am currently in the process of customizing an I Heart Fashion doll into her Daughter of Arachne 2011 doll election prototype. I can never talk about this with anyone aside from my boyfriend because 1. Telling people you collect Monster High dolls is like a 50/50 chance of either they're cool with it or they'll think you're a weirdo and 2. Saying your favorite character is someone other than Draculaura, Frankie, Cleo, Clawdeen, Lagoona, and Ghoulia will 100% add to the chances of them thinking you're a weirdo because it's too far removed from their understanding of Monster High. I have also spent close to or a little over 600 dollars on my Wydowna collection and ofc I will never mention this to anyone IRLbecause holy shittttt that's crazy.
Does anyone else have an obscure doll obsession?
No. 392785
>>392552Sounds like a really interesting collection nonna, she’s such a unique doll. I never had a Wydowna doll, but my niece was obsessed with MH as a kid and when I’d play dolls with her I always thought it was cool that Mattel made a spider doll for girls who actually has 8 limbs and six eyes.
Monster high was such a rarity, you don’t often see toy lines for girls with such unique and dark concepts.
I think that any kind of toy collection, except maybe the occasional plushie or Lego set, is weird to normies. So I usually just talk about it with other toy/doll collectors online.

Anons! Would any of you be interested in a gender critical doll server? I am in the process of creating one with a friend. We aren't done yet, but we are in the process of fleshing it out. Once we are done, I will post about it here more with instructions on how to get an invite.
This server is ideal for female collectors who are passionate doll collectors, more specifically focused on mainstream fashion dolls like Barbie, Bratz, Monster High, Rainbow High, and etc. Basically if they were released on shelves, it's game. I'm not a BJD collector and honestly the two communities are so different that I hesitate to include them, but if enough BJD collectors are interested I could make specific channels for them.
If you are interested please reply to this post!

Has anyone here tried their hand at making their own dolls? Either as a prototype toy design, or a handmade project? I had a go trying to teach myself to sculpt them but kinda sucked at it. When I have more space to myself I want to try again.

where are your favorite places for doll communities online? I had been looking at dolltwt and even reddit for a while, but it seems to largely just be about buying every doll released and not engaging with the hobby more than just collecting and displaying on shelves. Are there any decent personal websites/blogs for it these days?
