Just started my 2nd year of uni and there are rather a few new Japanese students in the class. I've seen them eating some unusual stuff but I have tried some stuff which is nice. It got me thinking about what other Japanese food out there that the west like.

It appears that a lot of weaboos like to eat their sweets due to the packaging and to act Japanese.

Sorry for any grammatical and spelling mistakes. I'm Spanish

Pocky isn't even all that great

I agree, it's overrated as fuck. It's just bread stick with a bit of dried up sauce on the ends.

My friend sent me some pocky from her trip to Japan. It was like some limited edition type, thicker and strawberry flavor.

I took it out and laughed so much! It looked like a dog's lipstick tbh

Ditto when it comes to soy sauce

Infact the only Japanese candy I do like is Melty kiss, those are nice. The rest either have no flavor or are just sickly.

I hate most pocky, especially the chocolate and strawberry kind. The best kind of pocky is the extra thick mousse/fran pocky. Yanyan also tastes like shit.

I do love those popin' cookin' kits though, but they usually taste bad. they are just fun to make.

Best tasting Japanese candy is meltykiss.

I dislike seafood so that means i hate 90% of Japanese food. sushi makes me gag.

I couldn't really care less for a lot of Japanese sweets, except melon pan and Chinese, but a lot of the sweet stuff you find in dim sum.

But, Japanese food is pretty nice and healthy to eat, it's a great way to aim for getting 5 (or 7) a day, miso soup is generally nice with meals too as it is filling, low calorie and since it is fermented it counts as a pro-biotic. I don't consider myself a fan of fish, but there are plenty of meals without. Kaiso salad makes me gag though as I find the seaweed tastes and smells a bit fishy, seaweed in small amounts like in miso soup isn't bad. Anyway, as long as you're avoiding constantly eating ramen, anything deep fried like tempura and a lot of sushi, which is not as healthy as people seem to think.

Omurice is really nice, japanese cuisine has some neat and stereotypically healthy stuff. Lots of dishes based around fish and veg especially

Mochi is overrated though.

Not candy, but still junk food…

When I studied abroad last year, my school's store sold this and my friend let me try it and LET ME TELL YOU, I have seen heaven.

When I went to Tokyo station, I had them freshly made, but it was disappointing; not enough crunch to counter the potato on the inside. It was like a thick french fry, but for some reason a lot more disappointing. Maybe I'll go try it out again when I'm not really full on other foods.

My favorite non-junk food item is probably ochazuke. My host mum made it for me once and it was just so simple and warming and delicious. It gives me nostalgia of all the good times I had :') I also really like stereotypical shit like takoyaki and whatnot (but I haven't eaten it at Osaka yet though).

I had these in fukuoka, they were pretty meh. But then again, I don't like snacks that are super crunchy or potato-ey.

Pic related is my favorite snack. It's basically a bar of chocolate with a little biscuit stuck on each little chocolate square. The chocolate is super good too.

Sadly, I have the mega aversion to Takoyaki. The first time I was in Japan I was pregnant, and morning sickness kicked in literally the day before I got there. It was tolerable for the first day, so I got to experience a lot of good food. I ended up staying at an internet cafe overnight for the experience, and they had a cheap food vending machine, so I got the little microwaveable takoyaki balls since everything else was either too heavy for a snack or sold out. Huge. Fucking. Mistake. I feel like vomiting just thinking about it. I've had real takoyaki since then, but I seriously had to force that thing down my throat.

My favorite non-snack food is Gyudon. Preferably from Suki-ya.

Sorry anon, but Japanese sweets are amazing. I especially love Meiji chocolate, it's very tasty and smooth. And with all the flavours they have, like goddamn melon chocolate is the best thing I've ever had. There are so many more sweets than just Pocky.

I'm not a fan of sushi, but I eat it every now and then. It's not that bad, and it's also very healthy. Ramen is delicious. Grilled meat with all the available Japanese sauces is amazing. Tonkatsu. Karee. The list goes on. Japan has a lot of delicacies outside of stuff like Pocky and yanyan you'd find from any generic Asian market.

Ooh, one of my roommates this year let me try those, they're so good! I want to try out all the candies and chocolates in the store but I feel guilty enough eating cake from the conbini almost every day…

I'm so sorry for your bad takoyaki experience anon! My host mum used to buy me microwavable kind since she knew I loved takoyaki and they were fine for me (then again, I'm a huge slut for takoyaki and can stomach basically everything (except those 7/11 burritos… shudders)).

I found some from eBay, but Rakuten also sells them at a ludicrous price.

Haven't seen them outside of Japan though, it's mostly the melon candies that I spot at markets, but no melon candy. But this shit is the bomb, I'd be addicted to them if I could buy them at the store.

I haven't had much Japanese junk food, but I love how popular muscat flavor candy is over there. They remind me of picking muscadines, which taste similar, with my grandpa on his farm and it brings back good memories. The actual fruit is obviously better, but the candy I've had has mostly been pretty close.

Yes omg someone else feels the same way about seafood. They put fish products in places where it shouldn't be.

Well, foreign foods are always overpriced. For example buying pumpkinpie mix, marshmellow spread, and other American treats are super overpriced in Finland, so are asian foods in specialty stores.

American stuff is mostly awful though and I've frequented the American shelves of various stores. I keep wondering how they can talk shit about Japanese treats when their own traditional delicacies taste like sawdust and styrofoam and the chocolate is sour as hell. Give me back my Fazer.

Fresh pumpkin pie is seriously one of the best smelling/tasting thing in the world. Apparently the smell also gets men really horny.

The fact that so many people on here don't like seafood is depressing lol. When you find that you don't like something, just force yourself to finish it anyways and don't spit it out. It's pretty common that I try something and don't initially like it at first, but then I force myself to eat it and I'll usually end up liking it a little by the time I'm finish. When trying something new, I always force myself to eat and finish it at least three times before I decide that I like it. You'll thank me when you find yourself loving a wide variety of foods, just keep an open mind and don't think to yourself that it's disgusting. Try to enjoy the taste for what it is.
