Its quite an Interesting history
North East India was historically Isolated from the other Asian kingdoms thanks to the dense forests so they were much less advanced and were mostly pagan head hunters
they were colonized by the British like the rest of South Asia
In the 19th century a group of American baptist missionary's come to spread the word of Jesus in India
they had great success in Nagaland partly due to the fact that unlike Islam and Hinduism the tribal beliefs that Naga people followed weren't that big they didn't have a grand holy book and their religion wasn't spread in the billions so it was pretty easy to convert them

ironically the state with the highest amount of baptists in India has the lowest rape % of any India state and the rapes that did occur were conducted by Indian Army men who were stationed their

Googled them and wikipedia says this about the celebration they do this makeup for:

>At the end of the rainy season in September, Wodaabe clans gather in several traditional locations. (…) Here the young Wodaabe men, with elaborate make-up, feathers and other adornments, perform the Yaake: dances and songs to impress marriageable women. The male beauty ideal of the Wodaabe stresses tallness, white eyes and teeth; the men will often roll their eyes and show their teeth to emphasize these characteristics. Wodaabe clans then join for the remainder of the week-long Gerewol: a series of barters over marriage and contests where the young men's beauty and skills are judged by young women.

Sounds really comfy tbh. I wish my culture had men show off their beauty and skill to impress women.

From the documentary it seems the women are only able to pick men freely during that annual ritual event, and it's expected for them to act demure. This documentary also follows a couple where the wife doesn't want her husband to go off to the festival to meet other women, but he does it anyway.
There is a really cute older couple where the husband clearly loves his wife and children and stays home for them though. Also interesting is that battery acid is used as black lipstick in this.

Poland is pretty wild because the style of the dress changes radically depending on where you are in the country. That's a typical Krakow costume, and it's well-known, but if you go to other regions like say, Żywiec, things look so different!

Flower crowns or headdresses seem to be fairly common all over Europe, I wonder if that's related to pagan stuff, more of a midsummer type thing?

Pretty sure the girls in this photo are from the Kurpie Zielone area.

Queen Paubi’s headdress (½)

c.2500 BCE

Ur, Iraq

>“This ornate headdress and pair of earrings were found with the body of Queen Puabi in the Royal Cemetery at Ur. The headdress is made up of 20 gold leaves, two strings of lapis and carnelian, and a large gold comb. In addition, she wore chokers, necklaces, and large lunate-shaped earrings. Her upper body was covered by strands of beads made of precious metals and semiprecious stones that stretched from her shoulders to her belt. Ten rings decorated her fingers. A diadem or fillet made up of thousands of small lapis lazuli beads with gold pendants depicting plants and animals was apparently on a table near her head. Two attendants were in the chamber with Puabi, one crouched near her head, the other at her feet. Various metal, stone, and pottery vessels lay around the walls of the chamber.”

Ah I'm sorry didn't check this thread. Yeah I honestly had no idea anyone even really knew about chuvash. Whenever I've mentioned it to my russian friends they have no idea lol. I don't have many interesting photos but I do have one of my family farm here. I don't want to muddy up this thread with too much unrelated crap but maybe some architect pics might be worth.

the language doesn't sound russian what so ever (at least to me) and it's honestly hard to explain it, but it's like a lot of very short quick words spoken extremely fast (that you can discern).

Thanks for the post though. I've always been extremely ashamed for being chuvash because I've been told repeatedly it's like rednecky russia. I'd always lie about it.

just some facts, not trying to be rude!

>>32451
this isn't necessarily tang dynasty ruqun. it's a qiyao ruqun, which just means it ties at the waist. it looks more similar to one from the early ming dynasty.

>>32452
this one is a qixiong ruqun (again not necessarily from tang dynasty) and an interesting thing about this is the sash (pi bo) is part of the outfit, meant to be worn at the elbow.

also fun fact, during the tang dynasty all women were required to wear atleast one hair accessory when they were dressed. after the law was abolished, hair accessories were still prevalent in chinese culture as a part of a girl's coming of age ceremony.

Junihitoe noble court dress from Heian period, Japan.

Called the 12 layer robes but it could be anywhere from 10 to 40 or more layers of silk, depending on your social rank.

From wiki
>The layers of colours may be used to represent the woman herself, and the arrangements of the layers and their colours were a good indication to an outsider what taste and what rank the lady had. The colour combinations, termed kasane no irome (襲の色目, "layers of colours"), may have poetic names that refer to plants, such as "crimson plum of the spring". A name "under the snow" may have a layer of green representing leaves, layers of pink, with white on top to represent snow. The colour combinations changed with the seasons (of which there were 72 in the old calendar), and a wearer may change the gowns just before the flowers of a seasonal plant actually bloom. The appropriate use of colour gave an indication of the cultured and refined taste of the wearer.

Damn.

A little help?

Last year, I was at a carnival by the beach waiting to get on a water-ride. In front of me, there were 3 girls with really long hair; one of them was wearing two braids and were wearing long gowns either with a plain color or with traditional patterns with pants and tennis shoes underneath. They were speaking in a foreign language mixed with English which I originally thought it was Hindi but now idk

I’m not sure if they were Roma/Gypsies or Indian so I thought I would ask more “cultured” anons would kindly help figuring this out.

I understand the idea that it is disrespectful when it's redesigned into a "sexy" version. Seeing the Dirndl made "sexy" also makes me uncomfortable on some level. ah fair enough. I don't really understand, then. The only thing I would think of is the shorter length, and maybe that many retailers don't really acknowledge that they are lifting design elements from the cheongsam. Kimono-inspired clothes often are referred to as kimonos in some sense, whereas cheongsam-inspired dresses are just generically "chinese" dresses. I am really just speculating though.

On another note, I would like to see more traditional design elements in modern clothes, but given the profit-driven fast-fashion industry I doubt that would really become mainstream. I love how layered a lot of these clothes are.
