Please can we never, ever normalize low rise pants again. They look terrible on everyone in my opinion,even on people with fit bodies. I hate the oversized trend but I only hate it because, confusingly enough, I love it so much. I feel like oversized clothing only looks good on girls who are skinny all over. I think the first time I saw lolita fashion was on an anime magazine when I was 12 and got obsessed with it for 8-10 years, so I was pretty into it for all of my teenage years. I'm neurodivergent and I tried to consume every single piece of information I could about lolita fashion, rules, things that cause drama, what to wear, what not to wear, how to coord, videos, poems, pictures, information about brands, etc. I then tried to forced myself, a very tomboyish girl, be more girly and cute. Wore heels, makeup, tried to do my hair, etc. But I was never pretty enough. I even developed an ED because of this (started with not eating or throwing up my food, but I think I have a binge disorder now). I think /cgl/ and lolita fashion really warped up my mind about a lot of things. For a fashion that is considered "feminist" due to usually not attracting the male gaze, it is incredibly individualistic and it was harmful to me (not saying it can't be a positive influence though). I think I'm better off as a tomboy, it feels more natural to who I am; been out of the fashion for like 3 years now.
As soon as I realised I felt off and uncomfortable wearing lolita I sold everything, stopped buying brand, stopped buying frilly blouses because "they could be worn with lolita", stopped going to /cgl/, stopped consuming anything related to jfashion, and just said goodbye to all of that. It was a weird 2 year process of realizing this just wasn't for me and that I was doing harm to myself. Nowadays I see lolita fashion and I feel nothing, I feel none of the excitement that I used to have, and I don't think it's pretty or amazing anymore. I just see it and feel "meh" about it. It also oddly looks pretty costumey to me now, even if it's toned down or even casual. I was one of those girls who swore "lolita is not a costume!!!!" but in my personal opinion, it is. I was pretending to be someone that wasn't me. But I would never bring this up on /cgl/ or I would be spammed to death lol. If I had to pick an ideal for male fashion I'd probably say Korean men's fashion is my favorite on men (I'm not a koreaboo/kpop fan just for reference btw). I know other anons aren't a fan of the styles for female fashion there (I'm not either tbh). Korean women's fashion is very trendy but Korean men's fashion is generally pretty basic yet timeless and stylish unless you're in hip areas. Picrel for an idea of what I liked for a casual style. I'm not a fan of hypebeast streetwear or trendy Y2K female fashion that's happening rn so if you're into that then my opinion is useless.
To avoid looking bland always make sure you have an accessory to look 'put together'. Easy ones for men are watches, belts, styled hair, fitted clothes (always tailor them if necessary). If an outfit looks boring, wear a belt and tuck your shirt in. I rarely ever wear plain t-shirts because outfits with them are so boring without outerwear or interesting/statement bottoms. I love outerwear on both genders bc it's an easy completion to a boring outfit. Bomber jackets are hot on men, so are coats. The 'fashionable' straight male uniform is just fucking boring and I hate the shoes in that picrel from my OP. Why does every straight male own them?

maybe i'm becoming an old bitter hag but i fucking hate how it's becoming more common and acceptable among women (men don't get a say in this) to not put an ounce of effort into their appearances.

Sperg incoming. What disturbs me about the Y2K trend is that a lot of these clothes aren't even thrifted, they're bought from fast fashion factories for $5 plus $10+ shipping and tax. I think this goes back to what other anons have said about zoomers picking and choosing Y2K trends that won't be in thrift shops because no one really wore that stuff back then. The clothes are all synthetic materials which are terrible for the environment and the clothes have the durability of tissue paper–yeah even worse quality than what I've seen lately at Forever21 or Rainbow. And the sad thing is that when these items inevitably go out of style, it either goes in the trash and then in the ocean where it never biodegrades or ends up in actual thrift shops where the quality of fast fashion is even more laughable when next to actual vintage clothes with decent fabric/quality.

For example, as Lolita expanded out of Japan, the Lolita community stopped clinging to Japanese Lolitas as the golden standard that had to be imitated. “Real” brand came from Japan, “real” Lolitas collected Japanese mooks and brand catalogs to imitate the pictures, and Harajuku was the holy land to which all aspired to make a pilgrimage. I remember arguments in the mid-2000s on egl on Livejournal about whether ankle socks were Lolita-approved and people actually cited Japanese magazines/street snaps as if to make their point.
But I think part of it is that the majority of Lolitas are aging too. When the original old school gothic Lolitas aged out in about 2008 (assuming they were ~14 in the last years of the 1990s-early 2000s), a new generation of Angelic Pretty sweet clones pretty quickly took their spot in prominence (most of whom were linked to gyaru/fairy kei/other related subcultures instead of Goth and v-kei as their forebears). But now those that were teens (who in Japan have usually dominated alt style) in 2008-2013 are hitting their late 20s to early 30s. And unfortunately the generation of alt fashion after them never latched on to Lolita in the same way. It’s what happened to Liz Lisa type gyaru. It’ll inevitably happen to Lolita, too, but I imagine to a lesser extent, maybe not to near total extinction (since the Chinese market continues to grow, Lolita brands are safe there). I think the remnants of the subculture aspect of Lolita will die and it’ll become an aesthetic divorced from all content, where it’ll live in some form for at least a decade more.
I, who started wearing Lolita in 2008, for example, am finally selling off all but two cherished Lolita pieces. I’m almost 30 and I work full time, my hobbies are far removed from other events where I’d meet other Lolitas (most of whom are far younger than me anyway at this point), I just have too much to do to wear the fashion more than once or twice a season. Like people who are goths in their youth, most people just age out. A few cling to it, but they’re a minority.

in my area y2k and mallgoth scenecore is very popular with teenagers but its always looks off to me because it feels like theyre trying too hard to look like IG pics. plus the mallgoth/scene stuff was popular and new when i was in middle school but there was a certain naivety to it. we dressed like retards doing the best with what we had.
