I bet that she made the cover look as ugly and uninteresting as possible so she could raise a fuss about it not selling well and claim the reason is the black girl on the cover. If you look at other books she's written (though the art isn't great), you'll see that the art is still better, the characters are wearing more interesting costumes, there's more going on, ect.
