Just wanted to share this game and talk about it with other anons. I personally find it pretty iconic, not that similar stuff don't exist, but it was a pretty good game nonetheless. Best waifu? Opinions?

No. 212079

It's garbage. There are much, much better visual novels out there.

Can you give some recs?

God this game had so much potential. The scares were awesome but it just felt like a meme game for the sake of being a meme game. It's so annoying seeing people lauding it as the next best thing since yume nikki

If you're completely new to visual novels in general, I would recommend Key VNs like Clannad, Rewrite and Little Busters for lots of slice of life and comedy.
Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime are good entry level ones too with more action and such. Muv-luv has good mecha fights and shit if you can get past the first moege part of the series.
The SciADV series (Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate, Chaos;Child are ones that have been translated) is really good if you want VNs with more focused plots. There's no real necessary reading order to them, but I'd say Steins;Gate should be read first since it is widely popular. Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child, while not as popular as S;G in the west, are still both really good, especially C;C which was released in english recently. C;C is honestly the best VN I've ever read, so that's why I'm shilling its series so hard right now.
You can find more detailed summaries of the individual games by searching them up on vndb.

This is exactly how I felt about it, it had a good concept and pulled it off well at first, but it all fell flat because it was leading to literally nothing. There was nothing beyond the surface level.

maybe it's just because I'm not a massive fan of VNs to begin with, but I thought while there were fun gimmicky moments sprinkled here and there it was overall really boring. I ended up using the fast-forward feature a lot.

No. 212105

This was my first VN. It really spooked me at times, which I guess would piss some people off. When i was a kid I was really afraid of programs crashing and weird things happening to my computer, so this game really tapped into that for me.

I think the third act was kind of a let down though. I don't think I really liked where the plot went and liked it more when the horror elements was a mystery. Finding out who and what was responsible for the spooky stuff made it not scary anymore.

Also I think having the game set in Japan was a mistake. It could have been set in America just fine. It's clear that the author is a weeb but he doesn't know enough about Japanese culture to make it work for me. For example, classmates don't call each other by their first names but I guess other video games like Persona get translations where the characters do otherwise.

Also finding out that Monika isn't a Japanese name irked me even though the writer was trying to go for something weird. And apparently Sayori isn't a normal Japanese name either.

No. 212125

I wished it was a bit longer, the content warning at the start and Monika's poems made it quite obvious what direction the game was going to go in, minus the player being able to mess with their own files to get different outcomes. Once you've played one game where it becomes self aware, you've played them all.

Probably going to buy the merch though, I did enjoy it.
I wish the creator pushed back the spooky stuff to a bit later, I was having a lovely time with the experience despite also wanting horror.
Yuri's eyes becoming realistic and moments where you'd notice stuff then get freaked (like Sayori hanging on the poster) was great.

What does the game do to your computer? I have that fear too and I was thinking about playing it.

No. 212131

>>212128
(not original anon)
It only messes with stuff within the game files so the rest of your computer is safe, if you're streaming it will know the name of your stream at a point but that's the amount of meta it goes in the department. Heck, you'll find yourself messing with the game files out of pure curiosity.

No. 212138

I wish they'd done more with it. There were some other games that fuck with your files that didn't do well in the past. I also think that type of yandere is played out. I can see why it's so popular though, westerners are just now getting a taste.

No. 212141

>>212131

It will also know your name based on what your username on your computer is. I think if you're streaming it substitutes in the stream name (so as to not doxx you in front of your audience lol)

No. 212147

I actually liked it at first bc it was a different vn than from what I usually play
Anyways after sleeping over it for a while it got boring.
I like the general idea but after the first day averything felt so rushed ?
I don't know how to spoiler shit on here so attention spoiler ahead ;
Like Sayori for.example did not make a big impact on me thus I didn't really care when she hanged herself.
The fact she she did was a little bit shocking but only bc of the picture.
But since it's free I guess I can't complain too much.

Where the authors americans?
Like I just remember that that tsundere chick was making a joke with Monika's name and she said that the joke did not make sense in translation so I assumed it was made by japanese people?
Idk I did not mind the setting tho.
I feel like America as a setting with this type of vn would be weird too especially with kawaii animu characters.

No. 212152

>>212149
Not that anon, but they were american, yes. Also, you can make kawaii anime girls in America, they can still have animu girl traits, but adding some localized stuff, rather than dumb japanese jokes would have worked out better.

No. 212162

I did like a lot of the horror/psychological elements but it felt rushed with little other substance it hardly played on. I finished it in a couple hours and didn't really see the value in replaying because I realized it would all end the same way.
If it was a longer game that had more to the story I think it would have been really good.

No. 212195

There was some replay value, I was interested in the other routes, was really just trying to find a way to prevent Sayori's suicide for a while but upon realising that you can't do much about it it was a bit unfortunate.
I do like that even act 2 had two different routes you could go in terms of scares but not really enough unique scares to make it worth it, Yuri's dead-on-the-floor for a weekend segment was pretty cool.

No. 212206

this is my second vn, after KS which i was also disappointed in, and i thought it was neat… just not something i’d revisit or recommend to anyone else.

I spent the majority of the time skipping dialogue because it was too boring. The poems were nice. Their blazers suction-cupped to their boobs was hella distracting. I also kind of hate the character designs.

Everything just feels really amateur-ish.

HOWEVER as a free game it was really great. I mean, I feel the experience is worth at least 2-5 bucks, but I was more than satisfied with the game considering i didn’t pay for it

you should play vns that like, aren't by westerners.

It was just okay. I'd been wanting to play Totono for a long time (but no full English translation as of yet) and I heard DDLC is a watered down version.

No. 212240

A majority of the scares were well done and pretty damn creepy, especially Yuri's realistic eyes and Natsuki's mouth. Some of them were a bit too baby's first creepypasta though.

hnnng totono is so good! i am kinda bad at moonrunes, but i got the jist of the plot. i hope it gets localized soon. aoi is best.

It's pretty good for what it is. There are much better ones of course but it's probably one of the best western visual novels have to offer. Sadly.

No. 213645

I think the point for it to be a generic weeb anime game setting, becuase the gimmick was for it to look like a generic weeb dating sim. I think Monika even says something about how the setting is really vague nothing is specifically japanese about it besides the character names, and it could be anywhere.

No. 213677

>>213645
she means having it culturally related to japan was a bad thing.

No. 214253

Actually you can prevent Sayori death by playing the parts you missed.

No. 214268

>>212106
Fam I think you're missing the point of the game completely, it's MEANT to look like a generic anime VN with weeb tropes so the shock value of everything horrible happening would be bigger.

I never got the complaining of westerners making something that's happening in a weeby Japanese setting. The reality of anime is pretty out of touch with the culture and everyday life to begin with, so in my opinion you don't need to be able to replicate a 1:1 realistic presentation of Japanese culture. If I didn't know DDLC was made by an American I would've thought it was a Japanese product for real. Not my favourite VN and it was amateurish here and there, but they did manage to capture some of the authentic Japanese surreal horror feeling really well.

Everything related to Yuri was the scariest and most interesting. The scene of her staring at you with those crazy eyes made me extremely uncomfortable and it felt like it lasted forever. The messed up poems she gives you, the unsettling dialogue she gives during her route, masturbating with a pen she stole from you, and finally you being locked in with her decomposing corpse over the weekend. I think If they dropped Monika and made Yuri the main "antagonist", it would've worked better. Her psychotic behavior didn't seem to have a purpose now.

Anons who are saying they are disappointed in storyline, DDLC was never supposed to be their big project - as they are still working on their story-heavy VN as seen here >>212277

Basically DDLC is like both a) an advertisement for their studio and b) a teaser for their upcoming serious project.

That's why it's so short and there is tons of sneak peaks of the real deal, like the constant third eye mentions and hidden files that lead to stuff like http://www.projectlibitina.com/

Even the lead developer stated he didn't expect for DDLC to blow up that much.

Not to mention there are tons of cool little easter eggs I bet a lot of people don't know about in the game which makes it even more neat. Is it the best VN ever? No. Is it very good for what it is? Absolutely. I'm excited for their next project.

i really REALLY wanted to like ddlc, i like the art and all the hidden easter eggs, but everything about it just feels like one of those 2011 "haunted gamu!!!!!!"creepypastas to me
