Has anyone tried the no shampoo, water only rinse thing? From reading about it, it makes a lot of sense. A lot of women report that it has worked wonders for their hair, but others have said that has made things a lot worse.

No. 160814

I wash my hair with conditioner only, unless it's really super dirty or I impulse buy a nice smelling shampoo and it seems to work fine for me and my wavy/curly hair. I have more defined curls, less frizz and my hair feels softer. I still get lots of split ends though and I haven't noticed a difference in thickness or whatever.

I don't know about just using water only - how does the dirt come out?

You don't really get dirt in your hair, just an overproduction of oils due to using shampoos and conditioners.
The water only method resets this cycle and returns your hair to its natural state.

So when you work out and get all sweaty and greasy you just wash it with some warm water? My natural state is frizzy af, I need product in my hair to tame it.
I'm interested by this though, I might make it my new experiment

No. 160817

I have wavy hair that tends to be dry (and therefore my scalp gets oily REALLY fast) and doing water only just made my hair unbearably oily. I couldn't do only co-washing either for the same reasons. What works for me is using a tiny bit of shampoo on the very top of my scalp, rinsing then drenching midshaft to ends in conditioner, and using a really light layer of conditioner over the top.

Also I honestly don't see a huge difference in that girl's hair from start to finish. The last pic looks like it has the contrast turned up to look shinier. Otherwise it still has dry/frizzy parts through all of the pics.

I was under the impression if you have an oily scalp you should avoid conditioner on that part of your head and only condition the ends?

I used to do that, but my hair would still wind up being wicked dry (and therefore get oily again very quickly). For some reason, putting a bit of conditioner on the top has made a huge difference. I think the reason I get so oily is because of overproduction from dryness, so when my hair is totally moisturized from top to bottom, it doesn't get oily (also looks way better). I dunno. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think water only would probably work for someone who just has oiliness without dryness.

ive been doing it for +6 months my hair. i would reccomend, never buying shampoo again

I tried doing water/conditioner only for half a year and it almost murdered my hair and face. For some reason if I do not wash my hair daily my face will break into horrendous acne, no matter.
Doesn't work for everybody, sadly.

I use very little shampoo, and only on my roots. I cycle between vinegar, shampoo and washing with coconut oil. It does wonders for my hair, everyone's always asking for my secret but I can't tell 'em 'cos it sounds gross as fuck

It's a bitch keeping the roots nongreasy with minimal shampoo, but with a little practice it can be done

No. 160826

I've tried, but it doesn't work for me at least.

I have natural/kinky hair and have no middle ground nor routine, so I tried it and it left my hair with extreme oil and dirt build up.
Not to mention my scalp turns into a dry desert flaking mess after braiding for a week, and WOW doesn't help.

Switched back to cowashing and clarifying every two weeks very fast.

OTOH, people say that your hair smells stink after WOW, but I had no smell problems when I tried it js.

I should try that, my hair is dry as fuck

I've tried a few times, and ended up with seborrheic dermititis on my scalp. Would not recommend.

After the failed experiments: Lush shampoo makes it worse. I now use mane 'n tail mixed with vinegar to calm down my scalp.

Oh no, a girl who doesn't have the features of a "kawaii" 5 year old, must be a tranny.

No. 160831

I tried it and it ruined my hair. It was always dry on the ends and my scalp was itchy af. Water isn't enough to lift the dead skin cells and oil from your hair that accumulates. just use a gentle shampoo every few days and conditioner that's not heavily fragranced and you'll see results.

its too shit for my overly greasy hair

No. 160836

I tried this for a month. I was told it would get better after two weeks. It didn't. My hair was just gross. I went through so much dry shampoo just trying to make it look decent (like a can a week). I tried the baking soda and apple cider vinegar thing too…and that didn't really help much. I finally had to throw in the towel. My hair may be damaged or whatever from washing it regularly but at least I don't look like a greaseball. And honestly my hair looks fine, I just didn't want to damage it more than I already was.

I think it works really well for some people but I'm definitely not the only person who experienced this. It's not for everyone.

OP reminds me of PT.

No. 160837

There's a difference between no poo and water only. But I only tried no poo and using the baking soda and vinegar method. Which baking soda can mess with your hair, but vinegar can be a good rinse.
Its probably really only works with people with wavy/curly hair. But even then most women go the conditioner-only route. For straight hair its much harder, for me I just use a SLS free shampoo. It really just depends on your hair texture and how dry or oily it is.

It's like if PT was actually attractive and made an effort

No. 160839

My hair was oily doing no poo until I figured out what really works. Using baking soda solution, pouring it in the roots and working it in, then pouring it over the ends, letting it sit for like fifteen seconds without rinsing. Then using a vinegar solution to rinse it out. This remove any impurities and dullness from my hair which used to stay in.

I used to have greasy dull hair but refining the process has literally changed my hair to my best feature.

Natural hair girl here (black gal)

I don't use shampoo often only ever like 3-4 months? I mostly just condition, hair mask and apple cider to cleanse but no shampoo. Doesn't do any harm :)

No. 160841

>>160816

Yeah, I started no shampoo years ago and my hair has never been in such good condition and it no longer gets greasy after just one day.
Fair warning though, it can take a long time for your hair to adjust, 2-5 months at the longest. In the meantime there are alternatives to shampoo though, like baking soda and ACV conditioner.

No. 160842

>>160839
This is what I do too! I use the vinegar water to rinse out all of the baking soda water. My hair has never been more glossy and lustrous until I figured out the right way to do shampoo-less wash.

No. 160843

>>160842

Took me fucking 3 months to get to the stage where it began self-cleaning like that.
Even with baking soda and ACV it still looked pretty lank after showering, but I'm glad I powered through it because my hair is incredible now and takes ages for it to get greasy.

The problem with shampoos and conditioners is that nobody really needs it, but you're conditioned (no pun intended) to begin using it from childhood so it trashes your hair and scalp to the point where you think you need to keep using it.

It's a product that pays for itself entirely. Ingenious.

No. 160844

Whatever you do, don't use baking soda in your hair!

No. 160845

I have very fine, almost straight hair, but a lot of it. I struggled with dull and tangly hair for many years after I dyed it dark a few times as a young teen. Experimented with zillions of shampoos, but nothing helped in the long run.

Tried no poo and failed cuz my hair is super fine. I also break out in hives when I get too dirty. Though, baking soda wash and ACV was was like pressing a reset button for my hair. Amazingly strong and glossy. I tried doing it again a week later but it totally destroyed my hair and took a year to fully recover. I think for me, baking soda was a good deep cleanse, but too stripping to use regularly on my fragile hair. My hair does not tolerate any kind of oil treatment either. ACV didn't seem to be the problem, so I rinse with it a few times a year to add shine.

I found my miracle products, which are men's 2-in-1 head and shoulders shampoo and an aloe vera conditioner I get from my salon. It's fairly cheap and I've yet to have any issues with buildup after after 8 months. Took me almost a decade to find what works, so I'm too scared to try no poo again for fear of trashing my beautiful hair. Tempted. I love seeing all these women who succeed with it and have gorgeous hair. I love saving money, too, so I'm buttmad that it doesn't work for me.

No. 160846

I have thin hair that gets greasy really fast. I also have lupus and need to put this gel on my scalp every night because I have a problem with lesions developing there. The gel is really greasy and my hair looks awful until I wash it out.

Has anyone ever tried a beer rinse? I wouldn't do it. But i'm wondering if it really is beneficial.

No. 160847

Completely no poo didn't work for me. I have fine/thin hair.

Using an oil treatment before the one time a week I use shampoo works out much better. I do conditioner only the rest of the time.

OT but how do you guys with fine/thin hair get volume into your hair? It used to be fine when I had very short hair but now that my hair is about shoulder length it kind of drags down the top so it looks even flatter and just doesn't look good :(

No. 160849

>>160848

Same fam, and you have a few options.

Layer your hair to reduce weight and increase volume.

Out of the shower whilst your hair is still damp blow dry out upside down out tousle it/muss it up with your fingers whilst drying.

Once dry run a wax product, like Fat Hair, through the top of your hair.

Doing all of these in conjunction work pretty well for me.
You could also try experimenting with your parting. For example I deliberately let my hair very-almost dry in a parting on the other side of my head, and right before it's completely dry and still that little bit malleable I comb it back and reset it on the other side of my head and it gives it immediate lift from it being set on the opposite side.

I also part my hair like a giant C shape, as in it appears as a less slopey C when looking top-down. It's a really good parting style.

I'll try these out, thanks! For now I just tie my hair up into a very high bun after I come out of the shower so my hair is fluffy and wavy when I let it down :') (the only problem is that I hate summer and end up never taking my hair down lol)
