No. 1499865

A thread to discuss the the ecological dangers spawned by cats and dogs without autistically hating on them or focusing on irrelevant details

No. 1499866

https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.1602480113

Invasive species threaten biodiversity globally, and invasive mammalian predators are particularly damaging, having contributed to considerable species decline and extinction. cats, rodents, dogs, and pigs threatening the most species overall. Species most at risk from predators have high evolutionary distinctiveness and inhabit insular environments. Invasive mammalian predators are therefore important drivers of irreversible loss of phylogenetic diversity worldwide. That most impacted species are insular indicates that management of invasive predators on islands should be a global conservation priority. Understanding and mitigating the impact of invasive mammalian predators is essential for reducing the rate of global biodiversity loss.

No. 1499911

Didn't the cat hate thread also have this kind of discussion too?
Anyway I wish cat owners would understand that they can't let their cats out all day. Where I love it's a huge problem, especially in the summer, and cats wipe out local bird species very easily. They're very good at hunting and they will attempt to hunt chickens as well.
I don't hate cats but they can be a problem and I don't think cats have to free roam at all costs like many owners like to say. They're pets and imo they should be kept inside like dogs.

Why do some people call pitbulls "cute"? They're hideous and deformed. They look like they're as mentally disabled next to other dogs just as much as a severely autistic human or a down syndrome human next to a physically and mentally healthy human. Is it a cope from pitbull owners who actually get these dogs because they want to look tough?

Some cat owners are incredibly lazy and instead of just getting a second cat to keep the first company and giving them some enrichment, they just want to dump their "pet" outside where they will fuck things up, be vectors of disease, and live a much shorter life. It's asinine.

No. 1500447

>>1499911 last year a cat ran in front of my car and I couldnt stop so I ended up running it over. It still haunts the shit out of me. I despise seeing cats outside, I know these dumb fucks dont really give a shit about their cats. Wish they wouldn't even get them if theyre going to do that.

You're sick. Disgusting. You ran an animal over and blame random people as if animals don't live outside normally as well. If you can't drive just don't. Next thing, you'll drive a kid over.

No. 1500465

>as if animals don't live outside normally as well
Nta, but cats are domesticated. They're literally not supposed to be outside and it's our fault they are. It may be common but it's not normal.

No. 1500481

>>1500465
Running over an animal is %100 your fault and anon should be punished for it. Most animals nowadays are domestic to an extent but that doesn't mean you can freely run them over and blame the non-existent owners when you kill them.

No. 1500505

>>1500481
Are you retarded? She said she couldn't stop. Accidents like that happen, the cat was most likely an indoor one and didn't know how to avoid vehicles or got startled and ran in the middle of the road suddenly. Do you expect every person to suddenly stop or steer away and possibly getting into an accident involving other people, all because someone couldn't be bothered to keep their pet inside? I hate that some cat owners think the road is theirs and everyone has to cater to the needs of their outdoor cat.

No. 1500512

>>1500481
Running over animals in obviously terrible, but anon said she couldn't stop and we don't know where she was or what situation she was in. If she's even bothering to say people shouldn't let their cats free roam, then I'm sure she cares about them.

No. 1500524

>>1500505
Are you mentally ill? People also run people over ACCIDENTALLY! Intentions don't matter. If anon is so shit at driving that she killed an animal, she shouldn't drive again before retaking courses. What if it was a literal 5 year old kid instead? Would you blame the mother? Anon is the one in wrong and if she was reported she'd be fined. I also don't have a cat so stop making up stuff.
>>1500512
Caring about cats or not isn't important, anon is obviously bad enough at driving to kill a breathing animal, she can also kill a small child next. I don't care about people hating on cats or whatever the fuck but when you kill an animal, blame others for it and continue driving even though you're possibly putting others in danger that is NOT ok.

No. 1500657

>>1500524
We're talking about an animal here. They're often unpredictable and you can't 100% blame the driver like you would if it was a person who knows road rules. And if a person threw themselves in front of a fast car at the last second even the best driver wouldn't avoid it, so it's not about driving skill.
Small children also need to be controlled while outside for the same reason and it's not considered normal to leave toddlers unattended near a road. Some drivers may be able to avoid big animals like big dogs but if it's a cat or a hare it's way more difficult to even notice it in time. You seriously sound like you don't know how cars and driving works.
And intentions DO matter.

Now all that's left is for edgy scrotes and pickmes to start posting gore and bragging about wanting to abuse kittens, puppies, etc. Any "animal hate" thread will turn out like this because it's a favorite topic for the mentally ill, just let it go. Normal people can already discuss concerns about animals in the general threads.

I watch this channel to unwind and as background noise. While I think this girl is very skilled I don't understand why does takes the right precautions with an Ovcharka which IS a big and dangerous dog but is bred to protect livestock and humans, but will go full pittie mom with Pitbulls. She even says that they were bred to fight each other, so that would mean that they're an aggressive breed but she doesn't take precautions.
I get that big dogs are scarier but a Pitbull will tear your face down just as quickly as a Caucasian Shepherd. I don't get these double standards… people can recognise that some breeds are dangerous but when it comes to Pitbulls they will forget the history of the breed and make shit up like the "nanny dog" stories.

ayrt and yeah thats what gets me too! pitbulls have a reputation here as a dog that chavs own to look tough, and theyre seen as dangerous. same with staffies to a certain extent, and this is why dog shelters here are filled with staffies and staffy mixes even though theyre definitely not as aggressive as pitbulls. i first saw the term pit mom online a few years ago and i was floored that women specifically have actually built a subculture around coddling these dogs, it's so so weird

come to think of it though, i just remembered that pitbulls are still illegal here (uk). so the only people owning them are people that dgaf about the law anyway. since they're illegal here it's even weirder to think that some people express open adoration for pitbulls in the US

Not even hate, just confusion. Why would anyone want to own a big dog like a german Shepard? They look so uncanny and are scary to just be around, like a dinosaur or something. It looks extremely unnatural when they jump on the couch to sit down. And you would have absolutely zero chance of surviving if it turned on you. What is the psychology behind owning massive dogs?

Tbf I think it's completely understandable to see other women with large, "dangerous" looking dogs for protective purposes.
I don't agree with "pitmoms," but I do think it's a good idea for women who enjoy remote activities solo such as walking or hiking.

There's like four german shepherds in my neighbourhood and the owners walk them super late at night or early in the morning because they're aggressive as hell. I know they can make good companions and I fully support women who choose to get big dogs for protection, but so often it's just a man who wants a "real dog" so they can pretend to be manly men.

(nta) this reminds me of something. I haven't seen him in over a year because I quit smoking but I used to go have a cig at 1 or 2 am behind my apartment and sometimes this guy with an enormous dog on a thick rope would come down the alley and his dog would absolutely freak out at me. he kept it under control just barely and turned around immediately but it occurred to me that it was probably being walked at that hour because it was a difficult dog and it really looked like it would fuck me up but it was so close to me there was nothing I could do so I just stood there nonplussed. literally I just thought "I guess I die if that rope snaps??" fuck all I could do about it lol. it happened like 5 separate times.

Gonna sperg out for a second, My shit neighbors had a huge Pitbull that would terrorize animals and bark 24/7 and I'd hear them beating it. Eventually it got smashed by a truck and wound up sitting on the road for 4 days till the city finally got it. Now 2 months later they've gotten another ShitBull and it keeps getting off the leash to go after my outside cats. I'm at a loss of what to do to protect them. It's not scared of anything either so I had to throw a pot of cold water on it to make it run away. fucking retarded bull just stands in the middle of the road too so it's only a matter of time till one of my cats or that dog dies. Why the fuck do these people keep getting big murderous dogs they don't care about?

Nonna where the fuck do you live? Maybe in the city or somewhere with lots of traffic that won't happen unless you're being negligent, but a lot of people live in places where an animal really could just pop out of the woods and run right in front of your car. I'm lucky I've never hit a cat or dog but I've had a few close calls

No. 1504132

I used to work at a pet supplies store and this thread reminded me of this one lady who was getting flea/worm stuff for her cat. she told me and my coworker that he just LOVES to be outdoors even though he keeps getting ticks and all that stuff. We pointed out that this area just isn't really safe for cats, it's in the foothills of some mountains and there's huge birds, coyotes, mountain lions, and rugged terrain/forest, not to mention the traffic through our town, which is the last before you head over the mountains. She got insanely defensive, and when my coworker pointed out that her cat is likely impacting the natural environment, she insisted that her cat doesn't hunt and stayed long after her transaction was over to tell us that it was normal in england to let your cats out (we are in california) and it's not her fault he wants outside and whatever.

There is literally no reason for a cat to be outside, all that's happening is endangering other people when the cat runs in front of a car or scratches someone when it's being chased by a dog (happened to my grandmother, she had to get antibiotics), endangering the cat from cars/predators, and endangering the local wildlife/ecosystem because of their hunting, and divert finances/donations from other organizations that could help children or something because someone's didn't neuter their cat and now there's 5 litters in the neighborhood shelter.

So am I supposed to assume the cat jumped out at her on the freeway? The most realistic answer is usually the most accurate, this dumbass was going too fast on a residential street and the cat jumped out and she was going to fast too stop or swerve. I've seen it plenty of times before, so yeah, slow down.

nayrt but even when you're going 30mph (the standard speed limit for residential streets in my city), it still takes like 40+ feet to come to a complete stop when braking. Some freeways run right through the middle of town or near wild areas and roadkill is common in those areas because there are times when there's nothing you can do.
